Catherine Long

OCOEE, Fla. — Catherine Long, 91, of Ocoee, Fla., passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Health Central Park Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 1, 1912, in West Oneonta, daughter of Jesse and Edith Rogers Brockway.

She was activity director at Health Central Park and a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Marie S. Hilfiger of Windsor; son, John P. Sheldon of Otego; brother, Jesse Brockway of West Oneonta; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; a stepdaughter, Latrelle Holley and her husband, Chuck, of Mascotte, Fla.

Husbands, Joseph Sansone and Jewels Long, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held May 14. Burial followed in Ocoee Cemetery.

Arrangements were by the Collison Carey Hand Funeral Home, 148 E. Plant St., Winter Garden, Fla.

Carolyn J. McLaud

LAURENS — There will be a memorial service for Carolyn J. McLaud, at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the Laurens Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Harry Myers officiating. Carolyn died Feb. 1, 2004, in Edgewater, Fla. She was 68.

Committal of her remains will follow at the family gravesite in the Laurens Cemetery.

Friends are invited to arrive one hour before the service at 10 a.m. when the family will be in attendance and remain for a luncheon to be served immediately following the service at the church.

Wayne Warncke

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Wayne Warncke, formerly of Oneonta, died late Monday, May 17, 2004, in Blacksburg, Va.

He was born April 25, 1927, in Weehawken, N.J., the son of Louis and Alice (Reinhardt) Warncke.

Raised in Stroudsburg, Pa., he graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1945 and served four years in the United States Marine Corps. He won many athletic awards in football, baseball and basketball. He was an avid tennis player.

Wayne graduated Magna cum Laude from Syracuse University in 1952 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Michigan in 1965.

His doctoral dissertation dealt with the life and writings of George Orwell.

He began his teaching career at Marshall University, Huntington, W. Va., in 1954. He also taught at Wittenburg College, Springfield, Ohio, and at Hartwick College, Oneonta, where he became English Department chair. He retired from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va., in 2003. His students were of prime importance to him and many became life-long friends. He was an inveterate letter writer and kept-up a steady correspondence with high school and college friends, Marine Corps buddies and his family. Recently he had published several reminiscences of his boyhood years and travels.

He was the recipient of a Danforth research grant and several Fulbright teaching-abroad fellowships that took him to posts at the American University in Cairo, Egypt; the University of Punjab, Amritsar, India; and the American University in Amman, Jordan.

He is survived by a son, Kurt (Diane) Warncke, of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Anne Van Deusen (Dennis) of Oneonta; his beloved grandsons, Alexander, of Oneonta and Weston, of Atlanta, Ga.; his former wife, Helen Warncke, of Oneonta, a niece, Darcy Chamberlain and nephew, Chris Koehler, of Stroudsburg, Pa., and many friends, colleagues and junior colleagues.

He was predeceased by his sister, Lorna Koehler, of Stroudsburg, Pa.

At Wayne's request, there was no funeral service. A private service to celebrate his life will be held in Stroudsburg, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to UNICEF.

Arrangements were by the McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, Va.

Clarence Hagadorn

DORLOO — Clarence "Pete" E. Hagadorn Sr., 76, died at his daughter's home in East Worcester, on Monday, May 17, 2004, with his family at his side.

Mr. Hagadorn was born Nov. 25, 1927, in Dorloo, the son of Harold and Florence E. (McMann) Hagadorn.

He worked at the East Worcester saw mill; the Worcester saw mill, Timberland in Stamford, Harder Silo in Cobleskill and most recently, Burton Enterprises in Cobleskill. For more than 15 years he was a logger for various people and was caretaker of the Seward Valley Cemetery in Dorloo for 10 years.

Mr. Hagadorn was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1951 to 1953. He then served eight years in the Reserves.

He enjoyed making homemade brew and cider, hunting, fishing and hunting for ginseng. Mr. Hagadorn also tended vegetable and flower gardens, loved to bird watch as well as look at the wildlife.

Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Lou Coffin, of East Worcester, Wanda Hagedorn, of Jefferson, and Barbara Stevens, of Worcester; two sons, Ricky Hagadorn, of Middleburgh and Clarence E. Hagadorn Jr., of Worcester; a stepson, Steven Morell, of Worcester; a sister, Betty Prentice, of East Worcester; three brothers, Harold Hagadorn Jr., of Richmondville, Donald Hagadorn, of Fort Plain, and Keith Rolland Hagadorn, of Dorloo; his former wife, Alice Morell, of East Worcester; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a step granddaughter.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life service at noon on Saturday, May 22, at the home of the deceased's brother, Rollie, on West Richmondville Road in Dorloo.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Lola Ann Curran

WESTFORD — Lola Ann Moseman Curran, 50, of Westford, went to rest on Monday, May 17, 2004. She was at Bassett Healthcare Hospital, in Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 14, 1953, in Margaretville.

Lola married Rex Curran on July 11, 1970.

She was predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Gladys (Moshier) Moseman.

Lola is survived her husband, Rex Edwin Curran; their children, Belinda and husband, Ronnie Harrington, of Worcester, Doraine K. Curran, of Oneonta, and Elaine K. Curran, of Westford; three grandchildren, Kayla and Patrick Fling Jr. and Tyrell Kirby; She is also survived by extended daughters, Cathy and husband Charlie Mould and Nina Effner; her sisters, Linda Aubry and Ernie Foster, of Schenevus and Laurel and Randall Curran of Worcester; her brothers, Shannon and Shirley Moseman, of East Meredith and Len and Brenda Haynes, of Oneonta, and all their families; stepfather, Leonard Haynes; as well as many great nieces and nephews.

Lola loved baking, dancing, helping others, body work on cars, her grandchildren and her many close friends. She was full of energy and spirit.

There will be a celebration of Lola's life 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, at Randall and Laurel Curran's home, 1094 West Hill Rd., Worcester.

The committal will be announced at the celebration of life.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Kathyann J. (Kate) Weisensee

SHARON SPRINGS — Mrs. Kathyann J. (Kate) Weisensee, 52, of Sharon Springs passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at her home.

She was born Aug. 19, 1951, in Sidney, the daughter of William and Juna (Adams) Richards.

On May 27, 1995, she married Richard J. Weisensee in Sharon Springs.

She was employed as a Registered Nurse for 18 years, five of which were at Cobleskill and six, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Survivors include her husband, Richard J. Weisensee, of Sharon Springs; her mother, Juna Richards, of Oneonta; a son, William and his wife, Jennifer McCumber, of San Bernardino, Calif.; a daughter, Bethany and her husband, Jason Stevenson, of Ames; grandchildren, Arkell, Kyle, Justin, Avery, Hannah, Tori; a brother, Frank Richards of Saugerties; sister, Karen Hinkley and numerous nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 21, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Sandy McGrady, officiating.

Burial will follow in Mount Upton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Kate's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main Street, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Kate Weisensee Scholarship Fund, c/o Sandy McGrady, third floor Medicine, Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Minnie Ballantine

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Minnie Ada Harrington Ballantine, 86, of Oneonta, who died Dec. 17, 2003, will be at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, May 20, 2004, in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lewis Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Paulyn S. Wade

TYRONE — Paulyn S. Wade, 76, of Jerry Lane, in Tyrone, passed away on Friday, May 14, 2004, at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira.

She was born in Oxford, daughter of Harold T. and Mabel Seeley.

Married to John William Wade; he predeceased her in 1998.

She was a loving mother and grandmother and an avid outdoorswoman who loved hunting and fishing. Mrs. Wade was a member of the Tyrone Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was a state champion in women's skeet and trap shooting.

Mrs. Wade is survived by her stepdaughter, Deborah and Andrew James, of North Andover, Mass.; stepson, Jeffrey and Elizabeth Wade, of Georgetown, Mass.; grandsons, Eric and Brian James, Corey, Brandon and Tyler Wade. She is also survived by a cousin; and her three faithful companions, Runtie, Shadow and Gidget.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Mrs. Wade at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, at the Tyrone United Methodist Church in Tyrone. The Rev. Jason Thompson will officiate.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the North East Pekinese Rescue Inc. Fund, PO Box 461, Manchester, PA 17345, or to the Tyrone Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Rte. 226, Tyrone, NY 14887.

Carolyn J. McLaud

LAURENS — There will be a memorial service for Carolyn J. McLaud, at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the Laurens Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Harry Myers officiating. Carolyn died Feb. 1, 2004, in Edgewater, Fla. She was 68.

Terry Macumber

GILBERTSVILLE — Terry Macumber, 52, of Oneonta and Gilbertsville, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2004, at the home of his parents, Donald and Ethel Macumber.

Terry was born Feb. 3, 1952, in Sidney Hospital. He graduated from Gilbertsville Central School in 1972. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

Terry is survived by his daughters, Melissa Dever and Jessica Macumber; as well as his two sons, Donald and Terry Macumber Jr.; his three grandchildren, Sierra Dever, Ethan Dever and Justin Macumber of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his siblings, Donette and Doug Loitsch of Oneonta, Kimberly DeForest of Sidney, Joanne and Mark Mahlmeister of Sidney, Jeff and Noemi Macumber of Otego and Darryl DeForest of Unadilla; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Terry was employed as a farmer in his younger years, then at Otsego Automotive and Mac-Laser Technologies. He had an unending love of the land and animals.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the family and friends who attended the pig roast in honor of Terry on May 15. This helped brighten his last days.

There will be no calling hours, and a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, at the Gilbertsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating.

Special thanks to the many doctors and nurses at Oneonta Associates, the radiation and oncology departments at FoxCare Cancer Center, Susquehanna Family Practice and Fox Hospital. Also much gratitude to the many close friends who made Terry's last months so very special: Anita, Janet, Darryl, Penny, Robin and Carol. Thank you to Debbie Ostrander and Maria Roberts who pitched in to help Terry with their special nursing talents.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in Terry's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

William D. Shepard

FLY CREEK — William Duane Shepard, 81, of Fly Creek, died early Thursday morning, May 20, 2004, at the Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Bill was born Oct. 25, 1922, in Exeter, a son of Smith J. and Rose S. (Rhyde) Shepard.

A graduate of Hartwick High School, Class of 1942, he was employed for two years following high school by Mrs. Grace Potter Whitney on her dairy farm in Hartwick. On April 24, 1944, Bill entered the United States Army and served during World War II under Gen. George S. Patton in the 702nd Tank Battalion and was involved in action as a cannoneer, tank gunner and platoon sergeant in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Rhineland, European-African and Middle Eastern Campaigns. He was honorably discharged holding the rank of staff sergeant on May 31, 1946.

Upon his return to the Cooperstown area, he and his wife, Selma, were married on Sept. 2, 1951, in the Baptist Church of Mount Vision.

After serving in the military, he was employed for nine years by the Clark Estates as both a truck driver and chauffeur, driving individuals between New York City, Westbury and Cooperstown. For the next 28 years, he was employed as a custodian in the Cooperstown Elementary School, retiring in 1984.

A member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, Bill was also a member of the Masonic Fraternity for 55 years, having been raised in Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free and Accepted Masons, Cooperstown, on Dec. 7, 1948, and the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Selma, of Fly Creek; one son, Duane William Shepard of Fly Creek; one daughter, Diane; one granddaughter; one son-in-law; one brother, Dean F. Shepard of Hartwick; one sister, Murl Gregory, and her husband, Warren, of Mount Vision; one sister-in-law, E. Jean Shepard, of Fly Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Smith J. Shepard Jr. and Glenn R. Shepard.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 24, at Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with Thomas E. Pullyblank, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, and the Rev. William A. Highfield, former pastor of the Fly Creek Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial, with military funeral honors to be accorded by members of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128, Cooperstown, will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon, May 23, from 3 to 5 p.m., when Bill's family will be attendance.

A Masonic memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. by Brothers from Otsego Lodge No. 138, F&AM, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Directors, Cooperstown.

Jonathan E. `Jon' Slawson

FRANKLIN — Jonathan E. "Jon" Slawson, 44, of Franklin passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in West Islip, on Dec. 14, 1959, the son of John E. and Margaret (Grant) Slawson.

From 1978 to 1986, John served in the United States Air Force.

For most of his working career, he was an over-the-road truck driver.

He is survived by his mother, Margaret G. Slawson of Bay Shore, L.I.; his children, Marc Slawson of San Diego, Calif., and Lindsay Slawson and her daughter, Savanna, of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Elizabeth Slawson of Huntington, Conn.; and a brother, Andrew (Patricia) Slawson and their son, Andrew E. Slawson, of Islip Terrace.

He was predeceased by his father, John E. Slawson.

Friends may call Sunday, May 23, at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, from 2 to 4 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 24, at the Franklin Community Bible Church with the Rev. Michael Amos officiating.

Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Fund of the Franklin Community Bible Church or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

William F. Gardner

LAKE WALES, Fla. — William F. "Bill" Gardner, 65, of Lake Wales, Fla., died Wednesday morning, May 19, 2004, in Lake Wales.

He was born Feb. 21, 1939, in Troy and moved to Lake Wales 18 years ago from Cooperstown.

He owned and operated Gardner's Trucking Company in Albany and was a retired night auditor for the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown. He was a United States Air Force veteran, life member and past commander of American Legion Post 579 in Cooperstown and quartermaster of VFW Post 2420 in Lake Wales. He was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include his daughter, Sherri (John) Browning of South Riding, Va.; sister, Judie Garaveli of Ballston Spa; brother, Robert Gardner of Atlanta, Ga.; and granddaughter, Sydney Browning.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Jerry and Mary Gardner.

Funeral service will be Friday, May 28, under the direction of Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown, Pa.

Interment will be made in The Glades Cemetery, Berlin, Pa.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, Lake Wales.
