John E. Spoor

LAURENS — Dr. John E. Spoor, 68, of Laurens and Clermont, Fla., died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at the Hospice House in Tavares, Fla., after battling prostate cancer for several years.

He was born Nov. 14, 1935, in New Lisbon, the son of Elmer E. and Helen B. (Stanton) Spoor. He married Donna L. Crandall of Oneonta in 1964.

He served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957. In 1966, he graduated from the University of Buffalo Medical School. Dr. Spoor was well-known in central New York for his work in improving pre-hospital emergency care. He developed the modular approach to training ambulance personnel in advanced techniques that became the process for certification in Advanced EMT procedures.

Dr. Spoor was also involved in teaching advanced trauma care and advanced cardiac care to nurses and doctors throughout New York state. He was well-known for promoting improvement in emergency care across New York state rural areas. He also participated in the promotion of the "Seat Belt Law" and the DUI program in New York state.

Dr. Spoor gave lectures across New York state to ambulance units, hospital nursing and physician staffs. He wrote numerous articles for emergency magazines, and wrote chapters on rural emergency care for textbooks.

Dr. Spoor was chairman of the New York State EMS Council and participated in local, regional and state activities related to emergency care.

Dr. Spoor was certified in emergency medicine, and served in various offices in the American College of Emergency Medicine. He established the section on Rural Emergency Medicine in ACEP.

Dr. Spoor also served as an Otsego County coroner, director of SUCO Health Center and was health officer and school physician for Laurens, Otego and Morris. He also served as medical director of Emergency Services at Fox Hospital, and chief of Emergency Medicine at M.I. Bassett Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Spoor, of Laurens and Clermont, Fla.; two sons, Brian Spoor and his wife, Candy, of Concord, N.C., and Kevin Spoor and Mandi Vance of Cuba; a granddaughter, Caprice Ariana Spoor; three brothers, Elmer (Betty) Spoor of Laurens, Richard Spoor of Pace, Fla., and William (Susan) Spoor of Douglas, Ga.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Olive Bush of Hartwick, Mary Reller of Oneonta and Betty Livingston of Ormond Beach, Fla.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or your local emergency squad.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Agnes E. Ferrara

ONEONTA — Agnes Elizabeth Ferrara, 83, a lifelong resident of Oneonta, died Sunday, May 30, 2004.

She was born in Oneonta on March 25, 1921, to Lynn and Ella Monington, and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1938. That same year she married Ernest Johnson, the father of her daughter, Lynette, and her sons, Douglas and Gary. In 1967, she married Louis Ferrara, the father of her son, Joseph. Both husbands predeceased her.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Agnes was well-known to area residents as the owner-operator of the Suntag Luncheonette, at the corner of Broad and Main streets. She also worked at Endicott Johnson shoe store, and prior to her retirement, the Grand Union store in the West End.

She and her husband, Lou, were avid bowlers and members of the Oneonta Moose Club. Agnes was, above all, occupied with her large family.

She is survived by her children, Douglas Johnson and his wife, Laura McCann, Lynette Howard and her husband, Paul, Gary Johnson and his wife, Marguerite, and Joe Ferrara and his wife, Eva; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte Monington Starkweather; a brother-in-law, Donald Starkweather; and a sister-in-law, Angie Monington; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Merlyn, Edward and Llewellyn Monington, and a sister, Eleanor Monington Utter.

A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2004, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Margaret H. Clark

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Margaret (Peggy) Hanlon Clark, 77, of "Ravenna Hill," Cooperstown, died Friday evening, May 28, 2004, at the home of her niece on Lake Street, Cooperstown.

She was born on Oct. 27, 1926, in Elizabeth, N.J., to Theodore Michael Hanlon and Metta Telfer Hanlon of Elizabeth, N.J., and Cooperstown, and was a granddaughter of Arthur J. "Putt" Telfer, the photographer, of Cooperstown.

Peggy married Francis Adams Clark (Bobby) on Aug. 11, 1951, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Mr. Clark died on Dec. 13, 2002.

Raised in New Jersey, Peggy was a graduate of the Benedictine Academy in Elizabeth, and later attended the Knox School for Girls in Cooperstown, and Katherine Gibbs School in New York City. In 1970, she graduated from the New York School of Interior Design, and was employed by the firm of Smyth, Urkquart + Markwald.

Residents of New York City and Cooperstown, Peggy and her family moved to "Ravenna Hill" upon her husband's retirement in 1969.

Throughout her years in Cooperstown, she served as vice president of the Cooperstown Recreational Corporation, which her husband organized and developed in 1973. She was also a part of the founding committee of the Better Exchange Thrift Shop of the Susquehanna SPCA, and was a member of the Lake and Valley Garden Club and the Cooperstown Country Club.

Peggy is survived by four daughters, Robin Jerome Clark of New Canaan, Conn., Joan Clark Kegelman and her husband, Brian, and their sons, Carter and Christopher, of Summit, N.J., Claudia Gertrude Clark of Boston, Mass., and Nancy Clark Angerer and her husband, Richard, and their daughters, Alison and Sarah; one son, Francis Adams Clark Jr., and his wife, Ashlea, his daughter, Mary Catherine, from a previous marriage, and their son, Francis Adams Clark III; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Carol Hanlon of Fly Creek; nieces, Barbara McEwan Pope of Cooperstown, and Anne McEwan Marnell, of Huntsville, Ala.; and nephews, Michael Mark Hanlon and Kevin Eric Hanlon of Cooperstown.

She was predeceased by one brother, Theodore T. Hanlon, who died Sept. 25, 1981, and one sister, Mrs. Jean H. McEwan, who died Aug. 4, 1985.

Services will be at noon today, June 1, 2004, in the Cornwallville Church at The Farmers' Museum, Lake Road, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan officiating. Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Peggy's family received friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth, funeral directors, Cooperstown.

Ernest Vredenburg

ONEONTA — Ernest "Ernie" N. Vredenburg, 85, passed away Sunday, May 30, 2004, in Oneonta after an extended illness.

He was born April 12, 1919, in Worcester, the son of Noah Ernest and Bertha (Grueber) Vredenburg.

Ernie graduated from Worcester High School in 1936, where he excelled in baseball and basketball. After graduation he played baseball and basketball for the town teams. He attended Albany Business College and Rider College in New Jersey.

In 1940, Ernie joined Company G, Oneonta's unit of the National Guard, in which he served as staff sergeant and company clerk. Along with many other units, Company G was activated to join the United States Army in the fall of 1940. After the United States entered World War II, Ernie attended Officers Candidate School, and served more than two and half years in the Pacific Theater. He saw combat at Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, rising to the rank of captain. He was honorably discharged in March 1946.

Ernie was a local dairy farmer for many years. He was also employed for 20 years at Oneonta Oil and Fuel, where he retired as office manager in 1984.

Throughout his adult life he enjoyed fishing, bowling and golf. He remained an avid fan of professional baseball and college basketball. Ernie loved the outdoors. Even late in his life, he often took long walks in the woods. He knew the names of many birds, trees and wild flowers. Ernie was devoted to his family.

He is survived by two sons, Lance Vredenburg and Chris Vredenburg, both of Oneonta; and his daughter, Sue, and her husband, David, Ochse of Porter Corners. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Emma and Rachel Pace of Porter Corners.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta.

The committal service and burial at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester will be held at the convenience of the family.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Nature Conservancy, Eastern New York Chapter, 200 Broadway, Troy, NY 12180 or the American Cancer Society, 31 Adam Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Marshall J. Slauson

ROXBURY — Marshall J. Slauson, 91, of Roxbury passed away Saturday, May 29, 2004, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

Marshall was born March 14, 1913, in Roxbury, the son of Orley Slauson and Effie Morse.

He married Inez Ballard on Oct. 4, 1934, in Roxbury. She died Jan. 8, 1998.

Marshall graduated from Roxbury Central School. He was head custodian at Roxbury Central School, retiring in 1972, after 40 years of service. Marshall was also Roxbury town clerk for 28 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Roxbury. He was a former member of the Roxbury Rotary Club, the Roxbury Masonic Lodge and the Roxbury Fire Department.

Marshall and his wife always enjoyed camping.

He is survived by one son, Gary Slauson; four brothers, Grant, Marion, Milton and Virgil Slauson; two sisters, Bertha Cammer and Elsie Furman; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Floyd Slauson; and one sister, Hulda Morse.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Contributions may be made in memory of Marshall J. Slauson to the Ambulance Fund of the Roxbury Fire Department, Roxbury NY.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Thelma Kirkland

BURLINGTON FLATS — Thelma M. Kirkland died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Folts Nursing Home in Herkimer.

She was born on Feb. 13, 1918, in New York City, the daughter of Stephen and Louise (Garbiarino) Repetti.

She married Spencer Kirkland on Feb. 12, 1949, at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Ozone Park. Spencer predeceased her on Feb. 27, 1984.

Thelma retired from the New York Telephone Co., where she had been employed as an installation clerk.

She and Spencer built their home in Burlington Flats, and settled into country living. Thelma was a participant in life; she was always on the go, ready to meet new people and savor life's experiences. She loved to dance, and would spend her weekends traveling about Otsego County dancing.

Thelma is survived by her sister, Catherine Lund; and four nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by Evelyn Liard, Stephen Repetti; and her nephew, Richard Liard.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with Fr. John Burns officiating.

Calling hours Tuesday, June 1, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Burlington Flats Cemetery, Burlington Flats.

David Joel Lum

MARATHON — David Joel Lum Sr., 50, passed away April 17, 2004, in Wyoming.

He was born in Cooperstown on Nov. 2, 1953, the son of Paul and Alice (Gray) Lum.

David married Penelope M. Chase on June 9, 1973.

David was a tractor-trailer driver for years. He enjoyed working in his own vehicles, small engines, construction and electrical work.

He is survived by his wife, Penelope, of Oneonta; daughters, Jeannie Lum of Davenport, Mary Stevens of Oneonta, Kelly Cadieux of Plattsburgh; and a son, David Lum Jr. of Oneonta; seven grandchildren, Allison, Kaleb and Leona Banks, Tyler Cadieux, Jason, Amber and Kayla Stevens; his brother, Mark Lum of California; his aunt, Mary Lum of Richmondville; many brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. Burial will follow at the Ferris Family Cemetery in Decatur.

Contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Kathryn I. Frenier

ONEONTA — Kathryn I. Frenier, 91, of Oneonta passed away on Friday, May 28, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home.

She was born March 19, 1913, in Gilboa, the daughter of Edward P. and Dinah (Mann) Moore.

She was married to Elton "Pete" Frenier, who predeceased her several years ago.

For a number of years, she worked for Elmore Feed, before her marriage, when she moved to North Hampton, Mass., and then to Summerfield, Fla. She then moved back to Oneonta about 15 years ago. Kathryn was a member of St. Mary's Church.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Marie Moore of Stamford.

She was predeceased by six brothers and three sisters.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Leon J. Bailey

COOPERSTOWN — The Rite of Committal and burial for Leon J. ("Sonny") Bailey, who died Dec. 13, 2003, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Military funeral honors will be accorded by members of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128, Cooperstown.

Arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth, funeral directors, Cooperstown.

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services with military honors for Mr. Guy Edward Parks Fay, 87, who passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2004, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Gerald D. Carr

MILFORD CENTER — The committal service for Gerald D. Carr, 71, who passed away Feb. 9, 2004, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, at the Milford Center Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating.

Fannie B. Dart

MILFORD — Fannie B. (Cooper) Dart, 85, formerly of Milford, died Feb. 25, 2004, in Dade City, Fla.

She was born on April 13, 1918, in Milford, a daughter of Earl and Ella (Olds) Kilts.

After attending Milford Central School, Fannie worked at the Scintilla in Sidney during World War II.

She married Kenneth F. Cooper on Jan. 17, 1947. He predeceased her on Sept. 24, 1986.

Beside being a homemaker, Fannie also worked at the Oneonta Glove Factory for several years.

On Sept. 2, 1989, she married Walter B. Dart, who also predeceased her.

Fannie has resided in the Milford area her entire life and spent the winter months in Florida for the past several years. She was very enthusiastic about genealogy and loved crocheting.

Fannie was a member of the Milford Methodist Church, the Portlandville Methodist Church, the Victory Baptist Church in Zephyrhills, Fla., and the Christian Church of Dade City.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Verna and Kenneth Strong of Paulan, Ga.; three sisters, Ruby Chase of Milford, Clara Brechbuhl of Brooklyn, Iowa, and Dorothy Konchar of Maryland; two brothers, William Kilts of Milford, and Ceylon Kilts of Milford; three granddaughters, Kenna (Strong) Smith of Niceville, Fla., Kayelynn (Strong) Simpson of Poulan, and Kelly (Strong) Maxwell of Panama City, Fla.; three great-grandsons, Kenneth Smith of Niceville, Fla., and Michael and William Simpson of Poulan; several nieces and nephews; three stepchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Dart and daughter, Erica of Wayland, Mass., Mr. and Mrs. James Crawford, and daughter, Jamie, of Otego, and Richard Dart and son, David, of Austin, Texas.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Richard, Stanley and Earl; and one sister, Marion.

Graveside and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2004, in the Milford Cemetery in Milford, with the Rev. Stephen D. Fournier, pastor of the Milford Center Baptist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Bassett Healthcare Dialysis Department, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
