Blodwyn Bent

COBLESKILL — Blodwyn A. (Laube) Bent of Cobleskill passed away Sunday, May 16, 2004, in Rochester.

She was born April 13, 1916, in Lake Crystal, Minn., the daughter of Frederick and Ellen (Nellie) Laube.

Mrs. Bent graduated from Vernon High School and then, in 1938, from Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital, Syracuse, as a registered nurse. She completed her education at SUNY Oneonta for School Nurse Teacher Certification.

Blodwyn worked at Auburn City Hospital and did private duty nursing until she was married to Roderic E. Bent of Gardner, Mass., on Dec. 22, 1939. She worked several years at SUNY Cobleskill as a nurse in the Nursery Education Department. Her career then continued for many years as school-nurse teacher at the former Cobleskill Central Schools until retirement in 1974.

She was active in Boy and Girl Scouts, and many community activities including the former Cobleskill Community Hospital, Cobleskill Methodist Church, Seward Historical Society, Republican Women's Organization, Home Bureau, and was a volunteer for organizations through which she expressed her unselfish love, care and concern for others.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roderic E. Bent.

Survivors include her son, Peter R. Bent (Joan) of Philadelphia, Pa.; daughter, Nancy B. Kidd (Alvie) of Victor; four granddaughters, Heather Bent, Jennifer Bent, Sarah Kidd Farney (Michael), and Laura Kidd Pryzby (Eric); and two great-grandchildren, Brian Pryzby and Katherine Farney. Also surviving are siblings, Vivian L. Jackson of Hamilton, Mont., and brothers, Norman and Wilbur Laube of Vernon, as well as many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Cobleskill Methodist Church, the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, the Roderic and Blodwyn Bent Scholarship Fund at Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School, or the Alzheimer's Association, 435 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY 14620.

A memorial service will be held June 5, 2004, at 1 p.m., at the Cobleskill United Methodist Church, Chapel Street, Cobleskill, with the Rev. James Bowen officiating. Burial will take place in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill and Palmer & Shaylor, Inc. Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh.

June B. Hotaling-Barlow

COOPERSTOWN — June B. Hotaling-Barlow, 77, of Cooperstown, long active in the Republican party and former Otsego County Clerk, died Tuesday morning, June 1, 2004, at The Meadows, following a long bout with breast cancer.

She was born on July 12, 1926, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Harvey T. and Ethel M. (Firman) Bancroft.

In 1980, she married Michael Barlow.

Raised in Cooperstown, she graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1944, and then attended the Utica School of Commerce.

For many years she was employed as a legal secretary by the law firm of Van Horne, Feury & Gozigian in Cooperstown, and was honored during that time as the first Otsego County 'legal secretary of the year.'

In 1962, she was elected Mayor of the Village of Milford, the first time a woman had been elected mayor in Otsego County. She served in this position for three terms without opposition.

In 1974, she was elected Otsego County Clerk, becoming the first woman to serve in this position in Otsego County. Soon after this she was named the first woman to ever serve in the New York State Association of County Clerks and later became its president. In 1988, she retired as County Clerk for health reasons.

A dedicated Republican, June was active for more than 50 years in the Otsego County Republican Party. Throughout the years, she represented the town of Otsego as a member of the Otsego County Republican Committee and was executive assistant to Guy Rathbun during his tenure as chairman. She also assisted with many campaigns in Otsego County and was a member of the New York State Republican Committee.

Besides being active in politics, June was an active member of the New York State Association of County Clerks and the New York State Commissioner of Jurors Association and was named an honorary member of the Otsego County Bar Association. She also served on the first Otsego County Planning Board, was chairman of the Milford Planning Board, and was a member of the former Milford Presbyterian Church and the Criterion Club of Cooperstown.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Michael Barlow, of Cooperstown; three nieces, Patricia Woytowich of Richfield Springs, Roberta Ehlert of Altamont, and Margery Bancroft of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a nephew, David Bancroft of Canadarago Lake; two sisters-in-law, Rhoda Bancroft of Ormond Beach, and Mary Lamport and her husband, Frank of Hobart. She is also survived by several very close friends, Carole Tibbitts of Oneonta, Charlotte Konuito of Milford, and Sandra Harrington of Cherry Valley; many of her 1944 classmates; and her friends in the Legal Secretaries Association.

She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Bancroft, and his wife, Beulah; her half-brothers and -sisters, Harold Cahill, Firman Cahill, R. Burton Bancroft, Lillian Jones Gilbert and Jessie Cahill. She was also predeceased by her companion, "Bouncing Bobby Baby Emily."

At June's request there will be no calling hours.

A graveside committal service and burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, officiating.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Immediately following the memorial service on Wednesday, June 9, all are invited to a reception at the Cooperstown Vets Club on Main Street to celebrate June's life.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760 or Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Elda L. Sheldon

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Elda Louise Sheldon, 94, of Richfield Springs died on Sunday, May 30, 2004, in The Meadows, Cooperstown.

Elda was born on March 2, 1910, in Richfield Springs, a daughter of the late Mary Jones and Frank Armstrong.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leland, on March 16, 2004.

Elda devoted her life to caring for her family and home. She was a sweet and gentle woman who faced life's difficult times and illnesses with great strength, dignity and never a complaint. She looked for and found the good in everyone.

Elda loved cooking, baking, tending to her many plants and flowers, crocheting, bird-watching, and animals, especially cats. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a son, William and his wife, Sharleen Sheldon, of Richfield Springs; one daughter, Valnette Rossi and her husband, Tony, of Schenectady; a daughter-in-law, Carol Sheldon of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a sister, Hazel Parsons of Unadilla; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and one cousin.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Edward and Henry Sheldon, a daughter-in-law, Mildred Sheldon, a brother, Harry Armstrong, and a sister, Eleanor Gravelding.

A graveside service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in Springfield Center Cemetery, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, officiating.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped care for Elda and Windy during the past few years, including the Richfield Springs Emergency Squad, Otsego County Visiting Nursing, especially Kathy and Heidi, all the staff at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, the staff at The Meadows, Cooperstown, and the Catskill Area Hospice. Your wonderful care, compassion and support were greatly appreciated and will always be remembered. Thank you.

Thelma Kirkland

BURLINGTON FLATS — Thelma M. Kirkland died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Folts Nursing Home in Herkimer.

She was born on Feb. 13, 1918, in New York City, the daughter of Stephen and Louise (Garbiarino) Repetti.

She married Spencer Kirkland on Feb. 12, 1949, at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Ozone Park. Spencer predeceased her on Feb. 27, 1984.

Thelma retired from the New York Telephone Co., where she had been employed as an installation clerk.

She and Spencer built their home in Burlington Flats, and settled into country living. Thelma was a participant in life; she was always on the go, ready to meet new people and savor life's experiences. She loved to dance and would spend her weekends traveling about Otsego County dancing.

Thelma is survived by her sister, Catherine Lund, and four nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by Evelyn Liard, Stephen Repetti, and her nephew, Richard Liard.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with Fr. John Burns officiating.

Calling hours were held Tuesday, June 1, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Burlington Flats Cemetery, Burlington Flats.

Melvina Jarvis

COOPERSTOWN — A memorial service to celebrate the life of Melvina "Molly" Patricia Jarvis, 84, who passed away Feb. 20, 2004, in Las Vegas, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Christ Episcopal Chapel in Cooperstown.

Jane T. Askew

SAN RAMON, Calif. — Jane T. Askew, 90, of San Ramon died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in Valley Care Hospital, California.

She was born Oct. 16, 1913, in Wilmar, Minn., the daughter of Jacob and Marie (Jurjens) Dekker.

She married William G. Askew on June 7, 1932, in Bloomville. He predeceased her on Dec. 25, 1995.

A 50-year resident of the Bloomville and South Kortright communities, she retired to Florida in 1981 and relocated to Maine in 1993 and to California in January 2000.

Mrs. Askew was a farmer and homemaker who loved to read and do crossword puzzles, needlework and farming. She was a dedicated wife and mother.

She was a member of the Bloomville United Methodist Church and later attended the South Kortright United Presbyterian Church and Delhi First Presbyterian Church, and was active in the Bloomville Fire Department Auxiliary.

Two daughters, Mary Jane Roig of Bowie, Md., and JoAnn Medwid Baird of Castro Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild survive.

Calling hours will be held on Friday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Bloomville United Methodist Church, Bloomville, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Joseph Bokel officiating. Following the service a reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the Bloomville United Methodist Church, Bloomville. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Rose's Brook, South Kortright.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Valley View Cemetery, South Kortright.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Brent S. Galster

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Brent Scott Galster, 24, of Great Barrington fell asleep in death May 31, 2004. Brent had suffered a prolonged illness and was in a Boston hospital at the time.

Brent grew up in East Meredith, graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School, and worked with his parents in their janitorial business.

Brent was an active member of the Oneonta Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Brent then went on to Pittsburgh, Pa., to study as a prosthetic technician. Eventually he moved to Nova Scotia and married Sylvia Wilson, and they have a son, Branden. Most recently, he and his family have been residing in Great Barrington.

Brent enjoyed basketball, shooting pool, softball, fishing and mostly spending time with his family.

Brent had a heart full of love, and a very strong faith, to the end, as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Brent leaves behind, besides his wife, Sylvia and son, Branden; his sister, Vanessa Galster; mother, Dawn Naylor of Great Barrington; and father, Scott Galster of Oneonta, along with grandparents Carl and Marian Galster and Bob and Jean Stefanow. Also many aunts, uncles and cousins; two great-grandmothers; and numerous other relatives and many close friends.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Great Barrington, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Arrangements for a local memorial service are still pending.

Brent S. Galster

Brent Galster of 119 Hurlburt Rd., Great Barrington fell peacefully asleep on May 31, 2004. Brent worked for Berkshire Corporation in Great Barrington as a produciton worker. He was born May 6, 1980. He graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School in New York State in 1998 and Pittsburgh Prosthetics and Orthotics with a degree in prosthetics. he moved to Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada and married Sylvia Marie Wilson on January 15, 2000. His son Brandon was born shortly after in 2001. He loved the Yankees, basketball, airplanes, New Jersy Shore and his God, Jehovah, family and friends. He maintained his strong stand for his belief throughout his illness. He was a strong loving husband and father, excellent son and loyal friend. We will all wait for him in the resurrection.

James Allen Morse

WALTON — James Allen Morse of Walton, formerly of Hancock and Kingston, died on Monday, May 31, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. He was 58.

Mr. Morse was born Oct. 29, 1945, in Hancock to James E. and Helen Coon Morse.

He was educated at and graduated from Hancock Central School in 1964.

Mr. Morse worked as a welding inspector for Ecolaire Green Fan Company in Middletown. Mr. Morse lived in Walton for the past 15 years. Before that, he lived in Kingston for 25 years.

He was a member of the NRA and The O & W Historical Society. He was an avid coin collector and was very interested in the history of the Erie Canal and the D & H Railroad.

Mr. Morse is survived by his parents, James E. and Helen Morse; his children, David of Athens, Joseph of New Paltz, Francis of Virginia, Maria Minkler of Rensselaer, and Andrea of Port Ewen. He is also survived by his sister, Regina "Ginger" Herring of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

His first wife, Soccoro, predeceased him in 1970.

His family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton. Service will be at the convenience of the family.

Arthur F. Cooper

MILFORD — Mr. Arthur F. Cooper Sr., 65, of Milford passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 25, 1938, in Northport, Long Island, the son of Arthur and Ruth (Amsler) Cooper.

On Aug. 25, 1964, he married Beulah Refsnider in Northport.

He worked as a boat technician and salesperson for Sacandaga Marine in Mayfield until his retirement.

He loved life, his family, friends, and animals. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren very much, and he had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah Cooper, of Milford; a son, Arthur Cooper Jr. and Felicia Senzio of Northville; a daughter, Lisa Dooley and her husband, George, of Milford; a son, John Cooper and his wife, Charleen, of Gloversville; four granddaughters, Heather Hotailing, Amber Hotailing, Ashley Dooley and Samantha Dooley.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 6, 2004, in the Maryland Baptist Church, Route 7, Maryland, with Pastor Peter Mudge officiating.

A memorial fund is set up for the family, and contributions in Mr. Cooper's memory may be made to: John Cooper, 3148 State Highway 30, Gloversville, NY, 12078.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Phillip DiGasbarro

PITTSFIELD — Committal services for Phillip DiGasbarro, who died March 25, 2004, will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2004, at noon at St. Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin, with Father Charles Taylor officiating.

Marjorie H. Strickland

UNADILLA — A graveside committal service for Marjorie H. Strickland, 78, of Unadilla, who passed away Dec. 6, 2003, will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, June 7, 2004, at the Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center, with the Rev. Rob McKay of the Oneonta Seventh-day Adventist Church, West Oneonta, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Marjorie L. Eggler

ONEONTA — Marjorie L. Eggler, 78, of 21 Fonda Ave., Oneonta, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

Marjorie was born on Aug. 25, 1925, in Cheshire, Conn., the daughter of John and Susan Sheldon.

She married Norman James Bragg in 1949, and he died in June of 1953.

Marjorie first worked for Bendix Corporation in Sidney. She also worked for Bresee's Department Store for many years in different capacities.

She married again on Sept. 2, 1961, to James Eggler of Davenport Center. He passed away on March 21, 1979.

Marjorie was a member of the River Street Baptist Church, and was involved in many of their functions.

Marjorie is survived by her two sons, Glenn Bragg of Tampa, Fla., and James Eggler of 21 Fonda Ave., Oneonta; and her six grandchildren.

A graveside committal service with the Rev. Mel Farmer officiating will be held on Friday, June 4, 2004, at noon in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mars S. Hillis

FRANKLIN — Mars S. Hillis, 91, of Franklin passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

He was born Oct. 25, 1912, in Davenport, the son of Spencer A. and Florence Belle (Platt) Hillis.

He married Mary Irene Holmes on Nov. 2, 1935.

For a period of 35 years, Mars was employed as an inspector at ECD Bendix in Sidney, retiring in 1976.

He was a member of the Franklin Community Bible Church, where he served as a former deacon.

He was a former member and past president of the Franklin Central School Board of Education, as well as a past member and president of the BOCES Board of Education.

He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and the Franklin Senior Citizens.

Mars was an avid gardener and enjoyed trapping.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Irene Hillis of Franklin; his children, Frank M. Hillis, and his wife, Ethel, of Franklin, and Patricia H. Teter of Franklin; his grandchildren, James Hillis of Colchester, Vt., Jennifer Yahiro of San Francisco, Calif., Judy Hillis of St. Albans, Vt., Donna Smith of Fairfax, Va., Catherine Michelitsch of Otego, and Terri Whitney of Franklin. He is also survived by four great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 4, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder officiating.

Burial will be in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
