Cora Hilsinger

WORCESTER — Cora (Pickard) Hilsinger, 94, died Jan. 12, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

A private memorial service will be held at E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester, on Monday, June 7, 2004, with burial to follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

It is requested that any memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Church, PO Box 310, Worcester, NY 12197.

Joan E. Keys

WORCESTER — Joan E. Keys, 68, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2004, at her home after a long and valiant battle with cancer.

She was born Feb. 27, 1936, in Hempstead, the daughter of Jacob and Constance (Miller) Waszmer.

She was married to Theodore Keys, who passed away in October of 1973.

Joan moved to Worcester in 1982, from Freeport. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, where she was an elder.

Joan received an associate's degree in Culinary Arts from SUNY Cobleskill in 1994. She was the proprietor of the Hometown Cafe in Worcester for several years and more recently worked for Robynwood in Oneonta as a cook.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and loved all animals, especially her cats.

She is survived by her son, George Keys of Oneonta; daughter, Deborah and her husband, Joel Sutch, of Prattsville; grandchildren, Melissa Keys of Cobleskill, and Gerald, Naomi and Joelene Sutch of Prattsville; sisters, Sharon Waszmer of Hempstead and Barbara Parker of California; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was predeceased by a sister, Muriel Gumas, and a brother, Donald Waszmer.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004, from 2 p.m. to the funeral service time at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street in Worcester, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor, officiating.

Contributions may be made to the Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Brent Galster

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Memorial services for Brent Galster, who passed away on May 31, 2004, are to be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on the corner of Route 7 south and Kellogg Road, Sheffield, just outside of Great Barrington. Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5.

Eileen F. Stowell

MORRIS — Memorial services for Eileen Fisher Stowell, who died Feb. 10, 2004, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris.

Joseph Carr

ROXBURY — Joseph Carr, 57, of Roxbury passed away at home on Thursday, June 3, 2004.

He was born in Roxbury on Feb. 13, 1947, to Joseph Carr and Mabel Decker. He became the foster son of Bruce and Evelyn German in 1950.

Joe was a 1965 graduate of Roxbury Central School. He had his own backhoe business and also drove a tractor-trailer for M.B. Stryker part time during the summer and full time during the winter.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He derived a great deal of pleasure from either climbing the mountains in search of deer, turkey and ginseng or from getting out by the water with a fishing pole in his hand.

Joe lived and worked in Roxbury all of his life and will be greatly missed, not only by his family, but also by his many friends.

He is survived by Kathy; and their two sons, JJ (Joseph John) and Michael; and a grandson, Jordan. He is also survived by a half brother, Jerry Decker, a half sister, Elizabeth Hood, two foster sisters, Cynthia Cheung and Lorraine Bussy, a foster brother, Raymond German; and nieces and nephews.

Joe was predeceased by his biological father, both of his foster parents and a half brother Dennis Carr.

Friends may call Monday, June 7, from noon until the funeral service at 2 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury. The Rev. Richard Dykstra will officiate.

Burial will be in Vega Cemetery, Denver.

In lieu of flowers, Joe's wish was for donations to be sent to St. Jude's Hospital for leukemia research. The address is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Lauren D. Howe

SIDNEY — Lauren D. Howe, 57, of Sidney went home with the Lord on Thursday, June 3, 2004, at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born March 28, 1947, son of the late Stuart O. and Ruth (Rowland) Howe in Sidney.

Lauren graduated from Bainbridge-Guilford High School in 1965.

He was employed as a machinist for the Raymond Corporation in Greene for 37 years.

Lauren loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, belonging to the Delchenango Rod and Gun Club for 30 years. During those years, he served as president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. He is also a member of the Rockdale Rod and Gun Club. He was a benefactor member of the National Rifle Association and truly believed in what it represents.

When he met Fay, he started going to church with her at Fellowship Baptist Church in Unadilla, where he rededicated his life to the Lord and was baptized. For the past three years, he has been a trustee and in April was re-elected for another three-year term.

In June of 2002, Lauren was diagnosed with cancer. From September to December, he was hospitalized most of the time. During that period, everyone thought his life was over. Thanks to God, Dr. Matsuo and Lynn Baldstad, miracles were performed, and he came home in December. The Lord allowed him to fulfill two lifelong dreams. One was to attend a NRA convention, which he did in April. Another was a trip to Alaska, which he took in August.

Now the Lord has said it is time to come home.

His family thanks Dr. Donald Sherwood, Dr. Matsuo and staff, Dr. Zerbee and staff, the second-floor nursing staff and Hospice for their ability and concern.

He is survived by his wife, Fay Howe, of Sidney; son, David Howe of Bainbridge; daughter, Deborah and Jace Hurlburt of Guilford; three stepsons, Robert and Faye Meadows of Milford, Gregory Meadows of Unadilla, Brandon Meadows of Sidney; one stepdaughter, Pamela and Frank Filor of Milford; 10 grandchildren; three aunts; and several cousins.

He is predeceased by a brother, Duane A. Howe.

Friends may call Monday, June 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 8, at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Unadilla at 1 p.m. The Rev. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney

Memorial contributions may be made in Lauren's name to Fellowship Baptist Church in Unadilla, the Rockdale Rod and Gun Club or the Delchenango Rod and Gun Club

Kenneth W. Miller

ONEONTA — Kenneth W. Miller, 83, formerly of Sayville, L.I., and Saugerties, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at his home in Oneonta.

He was born March 28, 1921, the son of William F. and Mina (Auerswald) Miller of Hicksville.

Kenneth graduated from Fort Schuyler Merchant Marine Academy and served proudly during World War II, where he earned the Merchant Marine Combat Bar and his captain's license. Later, he expressed his lifelong love of the waters through crewing and support work on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.

Ken retired as treasurer of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island in 1989, and was the recipient of the Diocese's Distinguished Service Cross. He moved with his wife, Audrey, to Oneonta in 1999 to be near family.

Ken was an active member of St. James' Episcopal Church, Oneonta, the Woodstock Episcopal Church and St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Sayville, where he was a vestryman, lay reader and Sunday school superintendent.

Ken is survived by his wife of 61 years, Audrey Lafferrandre Miller, of Oneonta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Skip West of Worcester, and Victoria and Gary Taylor of India; a son and daughter-in-law, K. William and Martina Miller of Rutland, Vt.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; as well as three nieces, two nephews and three cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Francis, and a sister, Evelyn.

At the family's request there will be no calling hours.

A memorial service and celebration of Ken's life will be held at St. James' Episcopal Church, Oneonta, on Monday, June 7, at 1 p.m. A coffee reception will follow in the church hall.

A committal service will be held at St. Ann's Church, Sayville, on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lighthouse Conservancy, PO Box 654, Saugerties, NY 12477.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Richard W. Porteus

DRYDEN — Richard W. Porteus, 95, of 10 Pleasant St., Dryden, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Porteus was born Sept. 20, 1908, in Fleischmanns, a son of the late Wilbur and Edna Becker Porteus. His wife, Bertha Stowitts Porteus, passed away Jan. 12, 2002.

He was in the first graduating class (1932) of Hartwick College in Oneonta and worked as a store manager for GIF/Agway until retiring in 1973. In retirement he was employed by Arnold's Florist as a deliveryman.

Mr. Porteus was a trustee of the Green Hills Cemetery Association and served several terms as a Village of Dryden Trustee, later acting as the Village Building and Zoning Officer. He attended The First Presbyterian Church of Dryden and was a member of Dryden Lodge No. 472 F&AM as well as the Valley of Ithaca and Scottish Rite Bodies A.A.S.R. in Binghamton.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" Porteus, of Dryden; sons, W. Richard Porteus of Fairfield, Ohio, Robert B. (Patricia) Porteus of Freeville and Donald E. (Connie Bulger) Porteus of Slaterville; a brother, John (Evelyn) Porteus of Saratoga Spa; a sister, Helen Porteus of Oneonta; grandchildren, Susan VanZandt of Cincinnati, Ohio, Matthew (Natalie) Moulton of Mooresville, N.C., and Amy (Robert) Fahey of Atlanta, Ga.; and nieces and nephews.

Richard was predeceased by his brother, James Porteus, and sisters, Emma and Elizabeth Porteus.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 7, at The First Presbyterian Church of Dryden with the Rev. David C. Robinson officiating.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday prior to the service.

Burial will be private in Green Hills Cemetery, Dryden.

J. Stanley Johnson

UTICA — Stan Johnson passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2004, in Utica.

He was born in 1921 in Oneonta, the son of Royal and Maude Johnson. Stan had two brothers, Royal Jr. and Gary.

After graduating from Oneonta High School, Stan completed Naval flight training at Colgate University in Hamilton. He went on to serve in World War II as a Navy pilot on the aircraft carrier USS Belleau Wood. Stan was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and many other sports. He retired from the Victory Markets in Cooperstown in 1988.

Stan is survived by his daughter, Sheila, of Holyoke, Mass.; his son, Eric, of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Eric's two children, Drew and Corey.

Antoinette Frascatore

ALBANY — Antoinette Frascatore (nee D'Arco), 91, of the Teresian House in Albany, died peacefully on Friday, June 4, 2004, at St. Peter's Hospital with her children at her side.

The daughter of the late Vincent and Josephine D'Arco, she was born on May 27, 1913, in Johnstown.

She worked for various shops in and around Johnstown as a glovemaker, retiring from Pappa's Glove Shop in 1988.

Her husband, Emilio Frascatore, died in 1971.

Antoinette had lived in Niskayuna for several years until moving to Albany in 1996.

She was a communicant of St. Helen's Roman Catholic Church. Her life revolved around family and sharing her life with them. Antoinette could cook with the best, and created items that required her handwork artistry in crocheting, sewing and knitting.

Survivors include three children, Rose Petrak and her husband, Edward, of Burnt Hills, John Frascatore and his wife, Patricia, of Unadilla, and JoAnn Izzo and her husband, Dominick, of Niskayuna. Grandma Frasc leaves behind her nine loving grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, John D'Arco and sisters, Florrie Dattoli and Mary Conti.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Helen's Church, 1803 Union St., Schenectady. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend the Mass.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, East Glenville.

Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Antoinette Frascatore to Teresian House, Washington Ave., Extension, Albany, NY 12205 or Alzheimer's Association NENY Chapter 85, Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Glenville Funeral Home.

Margaret Hust

SIDNEY — Margaret Hust of Sidney, a retired nurse, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. She was 89.

The daughter of the late Albert and Zanetta Treese, she was born on Dec. 19, 1914, in Altoona, Pa.

A graduate of nursing school in Pennsylvania. She was married to Dr. Philip Hust. He passed away in 1988.

She is survived by her son, William Hust, and his wife, Joan, of Couer d'Alene, Idaho; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Hust of Kenoza Lake; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Philip.

A gathering commemorating Mrs. Hust will be at noon Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Sidney.

Burial in the Kenoza Lake Cemetery will be private.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Hospital Guild of The Hospital, Sidney, NY 13838 or Hope Ministries Christian Counseling Center, PO Box 75, Kenoza Lake, NY 12750.
