Patricia Wilson

CONESVILLE — Patricia Wilson, 58, of Conesville passed away at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill on June 4, 2004.

She was born in Catskill on Oct. 8, 1945. When she was younger, she worked for the Windham Telephone Company, and then became a licensed practical nurse and worked at the Cobleskill Hospital and the Eden Park Nursing Home.

Surviving are two sons, Samuel Brandow of Middleburgh, and Darcy Brandow and his wife, Laska, of Colorado; a grandson, Marcus Brandow; two sisters, Rhonda Diamond and Dolores Culjak; her foster mother, Lorna VanHoesen; and her care-givers, George and Laura Edwards.

Graveside service and interment will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Manorkill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR81, Greenville, from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Frederick M. Buck

EAST MEREDITH — A memorial service for Frederick Milton Buck, 83, who died Dec. 27, 2003, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 2004, at the Davenport United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nola Anderson, pastor, officiating. Immediately following the memorial service, all are invited to attend a reception to be held in the fellowship room at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Robert Stage

SIDNEY — Bob died on June 7, 2004, at home with his family around him.

He was born April 15, 1927, to Ruth Ryerson and Lawrence Stage of Warwick, where he grew up as the fifth of nine children.

After serving in Germany in World War II, Bob attended Hartwick College and graduated in May 1951, with a B.A. in history with a minor in psychology and was VP of his graduating class.

He married Jacqueline Lawsberg in May of 1952 and moved to Sidney, where he worked at Scintilla/Bendix/Amphenol for 31 years until his retirement in May of 1983.

In addition to his family, his passion in life was gardening, and he exhibited award-winning gladiolas for many years. He was president and a co-founder of the Men's Garden Club in Sidney. His other great passion was playing cards (pitch), which he did wherever and whenever possible.

Bob came from a long line of firefighters and was a 52-year member of the MacDonald Hose Company of the Sidney Fire Department and held many positions including 2nd Lieutenant, Secretary, Treasurer, Chairman of the Firemen Field Days and Trustee. He also served on the committee for the purchase of the Firemen's Field.

A member of the First Congregational Church in Sidney for many years, he served there in many capacities as well, including on the Board of Trustees.

Surviving Bob are his wife of 52 years, Jackie, of Sidney; his children, Lyn Winston of Oneonta, Karen Jones and her husband, Mike, of Franklin, Bobbie Sampsen of Unadilla and her husband, Mark, of Berne, and Larry Stage and his wife, Danette, of Sidney; his grandchildren, Steven and Ashley Winston of Oneonta, John Jones of Franklin, Stephanie Sampsen of Unadilla, and Travis and Earl Stage of Sidney; as well as three brothers; one sister; and 26 nieces and nephews and their families.

Bob was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jennifer Sampsen; his parents; three brothers and a sister.

A special thanks to all of Bob's wonderful nurses and doctors at the Oneonta Dialysis Unit of Bassett Healthcare and to Joyce, Danielle and Anamarie of the Catskill Area Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to MacDonald Hose Company, the Congregational Church of Sidney, Catskill Area Hospice or the Kidney Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

There will be a Sidney Fire Department memorial service at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at C.H. Landers Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Sidney, which will immediately be followed by calling hours until 9 p.m.

The Celebration of Life service will be held at C.H. Landers on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Pat Robinson, pastor of the First Congregational Church in Sidney, officiating.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers, Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

E. Russell Hayes

DELHI — E. Russell Hayes, 87, of Delhi, retired anatomist and professor, passed away at his home Sunday, June 6, 2004.

The son of Everett R. and Mildred (Russell) Hayes, he was born Feb. 5, 1917, in Thomas Fork, Ohio, and married Nancy Padan, March 4, 1946, in Columbus, Ohio.

Educated at Ohio University (A.B., 1939) and Ohio State University (Ph.D., 1947), he was professor of anatomy at the Medical and Dental Schools of Ohio State University, the University of Buffalo and the State University of New York at Buffalo, 1944-1985. Through the years, he was graduate adviser to 15 Ph.D.s, and teacher of more than 10,000 medical doctors and dentists.

A charter member of the Histochemical Society, the American Society for Cell Biology, the Electron Microscopy Society, he served on SUNY Medical School Admissions Committee, and was recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, SUNY, 1980.

Formerly of Pendleton, he was a member of the Democrat Club, a Niagara County Democratic Committeeman, and served on the Pendleton Planning Board during the 1960s, living in that area for 43 years until moving to Delhi three years ago.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Nancy Hayes, at home; a daughter, Annie Hayes (William Kough) of Delhi; two sons, Alan Hayes (Rosemary Starace) of Pittsfield, Mass., and Kevin Hayes of Buffalo; and four grandchildren, Yusuf and Kisha Hayes, Ivy Hayes Kough and Samuel Archer.

Private funeral services will be held in Buffalo.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Emma A. Ridgeway

MIDDLEFIELD — Emma Alexander Ridgeway, 88, of Middlefield died Saturday, June 5, at the Syracuse Home, Baldwinsville.

Since January, she had made her home in Liverpool.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 19, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Middlefield United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three daughters and their families, Sally Eldred of Liverpool and her children, Evan Eldred of Liverpool, and Dr. Ann Eldred and Dr. Robert Johnson of Cooperstown; Sharon and David Fulmer of Liverpool and their children, Scott and Michele Fulmer of Liverpool, Melissa and Scott Cannan of Clifton Springs and Andrew Fulmer and his fiancee, Kelly Girouard of South Hadley, Mass.; and Sandra and Jim Stansbury of Bradenton, Fla., and their children, Christopher Stansbury of Chicago, Ill., John and Maryanne Stansbury of Bradenton, Fla., and Leah Stansbury of Boston, Mass. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Beverly Ridgeway of Ft. Worth, Texas, and her children, Barrett Vawter of Dallas, Texas, Brandt Vawter of Cordon, Ind., and Gretchen Vawter of Columbia, Mo.; and by grandchildren, Mark Ridgeway of Boca Raton, Fla., and Lori and Gregg Graff of Louisville, Ky. Emma was proudest of her eight great-grandchildren, Justin and Jordan Stansbury, Morgen Fulmer, Adam and Ashley Stansbury, Emma Johnson, Mark Ridgeway Jr. and Gregory Graff.

She was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. Mr. Luther M. Ridgeway, who served as a United Methodist pastor in western and central New York for 43 years; a son, Robert David Ridgeway of Fort Worth; and a son-in-law, Lewis M. Eldred of Liverpool.

Emma was a licensed practical nurse, having completed her studies at Millard Fillmore Hospital, Buffalo.

She will be remembered by countless others who sought refuge and respite under her protection. She had a comforting ability to hear and understand both words spoken and those left unsaid.

For those who would like to honor Emma's life, in lieu of flowers, her family asks that you follow her example: Keep a promise, give of your time, make a difference in a child's life, listen to a friend, plant a garden, bake a pie, feed the birds.

For those wishing to offer a prayer, please include thanks for the staff of Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, of St. Joseph's Hospital, Birchwood Rehabilitation Center and the Syracuse Home who helped her so much in this long and beautiful journey.

Angela R. Sergio

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Angela R. Sergio, 61, of Surprise, formerly of Hudson and Sidney, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2004, after a lengthy illness in Peoria, Ariz.

She was born June 9, 1942, the daughter of the late John R. and Doris (Root) Sergio in Oneonta.

Angela graduated from Sidney High School in the Class of 1960, and then received her B.A. from SUNY Albany in 1964, and her M.S.E.D. from SUNY Oneonta in 1969.

Angela retired from teaching at Germantown High School in 1997 after 34 years and moved to Arizona. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, and when in Sidney, she often attended services at the East Guilford Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by a brother, Richard J. Sergio, Phoenix, Ariz.; stepmother, Vera Sergio, Sidney; nephew, Michael Sergio, Phoenix; niece, Karen Sergio, Plantation City, Fla.; stepsister, Jean Ward, Rhinebeck; stepniece, Monica Shupe, Berlin; stepnephew, J. Randolph Moore, Rhinebeck; three great-nieces and one great-nephew.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, 2004, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 11, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Allen Presby, pastor of the East Guilford Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the East Guilford Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Louis J. Calamia

MORRIS — Louis J. (Chick) Calamia Jr. passed away peacefully on June 6, 2004. Louis was surrounded by family and is survived by his wife, Betty Calamia, of Morris.

He is also survived by four daughters, Maria Rowe of Sidney, Wanda and Craig Topple of Staten Island, Colleen and Ted Williams of Morris, and Debra and Kenneth Marvin of Salisbury, Md. In addition, Louis is survived by four sons, Ronald and Fran Brooks of Gilbertsville, Jake and Marlene Brooks of Gilbertsville, John and Lorraine Brooks of Gilbertsville, and Don Brooks and Karen White of Annapolis, Md. He is also survived by several brothers and sisters-in-law, whom he enjoyed spending time with. He was also blessed with 24 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his mother, Emma Calamia, and his father, Louis J. Calamia, as well as his daughter, Robin Ann Calamia.

Louis was born March 24, 1944, in the Bronx and grew up in the New York City area and later moved to Morris, where he spent the remainder of his life.

Louis married Betty Brooks on Sept. 5, 1981, in Gilbertsville, and was a caring husband.

Louis enjoyed the great outdoors — camping, hunting and fishing. He adored spending time with his grandchildren and played bingo often. In the last weeks of his life, he was surrounded by loving family and friends. He will be truly missed.

Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Daniel Lambertson of the Morris Baptist Church officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Those who wish may donate to American Cancer Society, 50 Oak Ave., Sidney, NY 13838 in Louis' memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Christina Fusscas

ANDES — Christina Fusscas, 83, of Andes died Monday, June 7, 2004, at the O'Connor Hospital in Delhi.

She was born on March 12, 1921, in Mellahasori, Greece.

Christina married George Fusscas on July 24, 1952, in New York City. The couple moved to Andes in 1953.

Christina assisted her husband in the operation of Andel Inn in Andes. She also worked in the housekeeping department of Countryside Residential Care Center in Delhi for 13 years.

She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and cooking.

Christina is survived by her husband, George Fusscas, Andes; daughter, Ann Schultheis, Roxbury; two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Tahirih Fusscas, Falls Church, Va., and James and Heather Fusscas, Walton; grandchildren, Nathan, Brian, Amanda, Lanova, Katie and Oliva; one brother in Greece; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating. Burial will be in Andes Cemetery in Andes.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Ruth I. Woodrow

ONEONTA — Ruth I. Woodrow passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 8, 1912, in Hamden, the daughter of William H. and Margaret M. Woodrow.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Mrs. Margaret Steidle, Mrs. Elizabeth Scutt, Mrs. Jane Sherman, Fred Schempf, Mrs. Marygrace Rosen, John Kirkpatrick and William Woodrow.

She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Grace Stickle, Sally Collins, Beulah Schempf, William Woodrow and Ethel Kirkpatrick.

A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 2004, at the Westville Cemetery, with Betty New officiating.

Contributions may be made to the Westville Cemetery Association, care of Donna Francis, 1024 State Highway 166, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Valentine Michels

WORCESTER — The committal service for Valentine F. Michels, 81, who passed away Feb. 8, 2004, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at the East Worcester Cemetery, State Highway 7, with the Rev. Edward Golding officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Worcester American Legion Post 1584.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Victor Larsen

ANDES — A memorial service for Victor Larsen, formerly of Andes, who passed away Jan. 31, 2004, in Hudson, Fla., will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2004, in the Andes United Methodist Church.

Catherine L. Zuk

NORTH FRANKLIN — Catherine L. Zuk, 75, of North Franklin passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Montauk Point, the daughter of Homer and Viola (Davis) McCabe.

She married Peter F. Zuk on Feb. 8, 1947.

For a period of time, Catherine worked for Fay's Drugs in Oneonta, and prior to that at the Oneonta Dress Company.

She was a member of the Franklin Community Bible Church.

Catherine enjoyed camping and the special times spent with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Peter F. Zuk of North Franklin; her children and their spouses, William B. Zuk of Franklin, Doreen (Thomas) Lepore of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Peter F. (Margaret) Zuk III of Franklin, Andrew (Kim M.) Zuk of North Franklin, Evelyn Zuk of North Franklin, Kathy (Chris) Mahon of Cave Creek, Ariz., Paul Zuk of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and the Rev. Kenneth (Lisa) Zuk of Khabarovsk, Russia; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Marion McLaughlin of Hanover, Conn., and a brother, Wayne Davis of Norwich, Conn.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Franklin Community Bible Church with the Rev. Walter Schlundt and the Rev. Kenneth Zuk, her son, officiating.

Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call on Friday, June 11, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

George A. Rathbun

FORT PLAIN — Mr. George A. Rathbun, 88, of Fort Plain passed away Jan. 4, 2004, at Valley Health Center, Herkimer.

He was born April 15, 1915, in East Springfield, the son of Dr. William and Lena M. (Winnie) Rathbun. George grew up around Springfield and Canajoharie, where his father had his medical practice.

In 1943, he entered the Army where he served until his discharge in 1946. He was employed in numerous jobs, including one with the New York State Department of Transportation and "Coleco" in Amsterdam.

George was a permanent fixture at his Aunt Mary's and Uncle Bert Lybeck's "Rathbuns" summer resort on Otsego Lake. In later years he was the resident handyman at "Country Cone" in East Springfield.

Mr. Rathbun was a known "talker" to all who knew him. Regardless of whom he visited, whether it be cousins, friends in the Springfield area, the "Moving Edge" Garage in Richfield Springs, or the "5 S Diner" in Fort Plain, George found someone's ear to bend.

Survivors include a nephew, Thomas David Rathbun of Florida; and numerous first and second cousins in Springfield and surrounding areas of New York.

Mr. Rathbun was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Marjorie Rathbun David and Ruth Rathbun, and a brother, Robert William Rathbun.

Graveside funeral and committal services with military honors by the United States Army will take place on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Ruth Seymour

WALTON — Ruth Crystal Walley Seymour of Walton, a 40-year resident, died at The Hospital in Sidney on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, two days after celebrating her 100th birthday with all of her family.

Mrs. Seymour was a farm wife until the Cannonsville Dam claimed the farm in 1960. She then moved to Walton.

She was member of the Rock Royal Rockers and the Walton Senior Citizens Club. She enjoyed going to different venues to play bingo and crocheting booties for friends and family. She also loved Walton and her doctors and staff at Delaware Valley Hospital.

She is survived by her children, Darwin C. Seymour and his companion, Loretta Kalifrath of Lake Placid, Fla., Isabelle (Justin W.) Buchanan and Harold (Barbara) Seymour, all of Deposit. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Seymour was predeceased by her husband, Erford Keith Seymour, in 1959, and her grandson, Justin Keith Buchanan, in 1985.

Service will be held 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 2004, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where her family will receive friends Thursday, June 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. Interment in the Walton Cemetery.

Donations to the Walton Emergency Squad in her name would be appreciated.
