William B. Sheetz

ONEONTA — William Bradley Sheetz, 94, of Sheetz Road, Goodyear Lake, Oneonta, passed away at his home Friday, June 11, 2004.

He was born Nov. 3, 1909, in Binghamton, the son of Charles and Grace (Layman) Sheetz.

Bill graduated from Hartwick Seminary Prep School and attended Hartwick College. He was president of the Hartwick Seminary Alumni Association and as such, still served on the Alumni Board of Directors of Hartwick at the time of his death.

He married Irene Olga Ervey on July 5, 1931, in Oneonta.

Bill and Irene owned Irene's Vogue Beauty Shoppe and Webbs Shoes Inc. at 164 and 186 Main St. in Oneonta from the 1940s through the 1970s.

He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Oneonta American Legion Post 259 and a past member of the Oneonta Sportsman's Club, where he was an avid skeet and trap shooter. Bill also served as president of DelOtseNango Kennel Club for several years and was a life member of the Oneonta Elks Lodge.

An avid horseman for more than 60 years, Bill enjoyed showing the family horses at the local and New York state regional shows.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who often said his family meant everything to him.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan S. Bellino Patton, of Oneonta and Aiken, S.C.; his grandson, Barry William Bellino and his wife, Shari, of Beaufort, S.C.

His wife, Irene, predeceased him in 1999.

There will be a private memorial service for family and friends at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 14, in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating.

His family thanks all those involved at Hospice who helped Bill remain in his beloved home of 62 years on Goodyear Lake until the end.

Contributions in his name may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Margaret Slawson

ONEONTA — Margaret M. Slawson, 89, of Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 19, 1915, in North Tarrytown, the daughter of James L. and Margaret (Lyons) Lynch. She married Stewart I. Slawson on Aug. 25, 1943. He predeceased her on Feb. 6, 1988.

Margaret was a member of St. Mary's Church and, for more than 20 years, was a member of the A.O. Fox Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children, Stewart John Slawson, Mary Margaret Pettey and Linda Susan Slawson, all residing in the state of Virginia; two grandchildren, James (Stacey) Lambright of Ohio, and Rebecca (Daniel) Whiteman of Maryland.

She was predeceased by a son, Stephen Slawson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 15, at St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Tarrytown.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 14, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta. The family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the A.O. Fox Hospital Auxiliary.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, corner of Grand and Division streets, Oneonta.

Naomi R. Moseman

WORCESTER - Naomi R. Moseman, 77, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born July 28, 1926, the daughter of William and Inez (McMullen) Moseman.

She was a lifelong resident of Charlotteville.

Survivors include her sister, Bernice Ridgeway, of Worcester; and a nephew, Merle Ridgeway, of Worcester.

She is predeceased by her parents and a sister, Beatrice Moseman.

Interment will be at the Fergusonville Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Carl and Audrey (VanDusen) Sherman

NORTH KORTRIGHT — Committal services for Carl and Audrey (VanDusen) Sherman will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004, at in the North Kortright Cemetery.

Carl Sherman, 66, died May, 14, 2000, in Barneveld. His wife, Audrey Jo Sherman, also 66, died there on Feb. 25, 2004.

Marguerite Queil

EAST WORCESTER — A committal service for Marguerite Queil, who died on March 4, 2004, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at the East Worcester Cemetery with the Rev. Judith Thistle officiating.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., Worcester.

Tecwyn O. Williams

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Tecwyn Owen Williams, 83, passed away early Saturday morning, June 12, 2004, at his home in Lentsville.

He was born on May 1, 1921, in Buffalo, the son of Robert Owen and Gwen Tecwyn (Hughes) Williams.

He married Rachael Jackson on Jan. 8, 1942, in New York City. Mrs. Williams died on May 3, 1996.

Raised in Buffalo, Tec was a 1939 graduate of the Central School of Business at Buffalo. In late 1939, be enlisted in the United States Army and entered the Signal Corps School at Fort Monmouth, N.J., where he studied radio and telephone applications as well as cryptography. He went on to install communications at Pine Camp for its use prior to World War II.

Before moving to Great Britain to prepare for the invasion of France, he served in Iceland. On D-Day, he came ashore at Normandy with the 50th Signal Battalion and served various ground forces until he was wounded at Aachen, Germany, and medically evacuated back to the United States, receiving his honorable discharge in 1945.

After the war, he was employed by National City Bank in New York City as a documentation and senior securities analyst. While in their employ, he attended the American Institute of Banking, majoring in investment banking and economics.

In 1948, Tec and his family moved to Buffalo where he was employed as a plant electrician for Niagara Mohawk Steam Generation. He then began working as a life insurance underwriter for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company and continued his education at Purdue University, majoring in marketing. Later, he attended Oberlin College in Ohio, majoring in general insurance marketing and brokerage, and then became employed by Massachusetts Mutual Life and served as mid-state supervisor for New York.

In 1962, Tec began a mobile accounting service covering businesses from Cooperstown to Watertown, and specialized in accounting, taxation and business management. He later became a licensed accountant and practiced as such until his retirement in June of 1998.

Mr. Williams was a co-founder of the Cooperstown Community Foundation and was instrumental in the building of the Cooperstown Community House (now Templeton Hall).

For many years he was active with the American Red Cross, serving as the representative for the town of Middlefield and disaster chairman for northern Otsego County.

He was also active in leading the Cub Scouts and later the Air Scouts, which were incorporated into the local unit of the Civil Air Patrol. As commander of the CAP unit, he was active for many years in guiding local youths, and, through the auspices of the CAP education program, helped to place many cadets in civilian and military colleges. In 1963 he received the General Brewer Award from the United States Air Force in recognition of his contributions to aerospace education.

A dedicated and avid fly fisherman, Tec fished widely in the United States and Canada.

Tec is survived by his two sons, Robert Tecwyn Williams and his wife, Melissa, of Opelousas, La., and Kevin Glen Williams and his wife, Colleen, and their son, Seth Frank Williams, of Anderson, S.C.; his three daughters, Faith Megan Senie and her husband, Daniel, of Bolton, Mass., Dorothy Ann Cummings of Cincinnatus, and Irene Parker of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by their daughter, Melody Gwen Williams, who died Dec. 27, 1960.

The Office of the Burial of the Dead (1928 BCP) will be offered privately at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, with the Rev. Canon George F. French, rector emeritus of Christ Church, Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.

There will be no visitation.

Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers, may take the form of a memorial gift to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth, funeral directors, Cooperstown.

Gerald W. Laing

FRANKLIN — Gerald W. Laing, 71, of Franklin passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born June 8, 1933, in the town of Meredith, the son of the late John M. and Anna G. (White) Laing.

He was first married to Ruth Brink, and in 1982 was married to Mary E. Koury.

Gerald was a graduate of Franklin Central School, Class of 1951, and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Air Force.

From 1963-1975 he owned and operated a plumbing and heating business in Franklin, and from 1975-1995 he was employed as supervisor of the heating plant at SUNY Delhi.

He was a former Franklin fire chief, a charter member of the Franklin Emergency Squad, member of the Franklin American Legion Post No. 1689, former commander and adjunct of the Delaware County American Legion, former member of the Franklin Rotary Club, a former member of the Tumbleweed Band, former leader of the Jerry Laing Orchestra, member of the Franklin Historical Society, currently president of the Ouleout Valley Cemetery Association, Franklin.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Mary E. Laing, of Franklin; his sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Marleen Laing of Franklin, and Gerald Jr. and Allecia Laing of Franklin; his daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Douglas Knox of Franklin; his grandson and wife, Daniel and Laura Nightingale of Clay; grandson, Garrett Scott of Franklin; and a granddaughter, Amber W. Knox of Franklin. His brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Ella May Laing of Apple Valley, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Viola Laing of Delhi; his stepchildren, Antonette Langellotti of Davenport Center, Lisa Langellotti of Milford, and Gina and Otilio Gonzalez of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by his grandsons, Jared and Garrett Knox; his brother, John; and his sister, Virginia.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Franklin, with the Rev. Michael J. Shank, vicar, officiating.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 14, 2004, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

William H. Stines

DELHI — William Horace Stines, 83, of Irish Hill, Delhi, passed away Friday, June 11, 2004, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

The son of Francis Gabriel and Eleanor M. (Finck) Stines, he was born Nov. 7, 1920, in Queens, studied agriculture and graduated from Cornell University at Farmingdale; subsequently Hofstra University (BS); and New York University (MA), where he continued his studies in psychology.

A World War II United States Army Air Corps fighter pilot and squadron leader, "Bill" served in both the European and Pacific theaters. He later married Elizabeth M. Melichar on Dec. 9, 1950 in Hempstead.

Formerly of Wantagh, he taught psychology at NYU, and subsequently science at Stimson High School, South Huntington, retiring in 1983, and moved to Delhi 19 years ago.

Truly a "Renaissance Man," he had many areas of interest. A songwriter, he wrote several books and short stories and was an award-winning member of the International Society of Poets; the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Assn.; The Rockville Centre Rifle & Pistol Assn.; NRA; Ruffed Grouse Society; Oneonta American Legion; and also had a keen interest in nature and animal behavior.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth ("Betty") Stines, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth E. ("Beth") and David Manch of Treadwell; two sisters-in-law, Claire Simpson of Orlando, Fla., and Margaret Melichar of Greensburg, Pa.; and several nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by a brother, Richard F., and sister, Lillian F. Stines, and a close family friend, Phyllis Crescenzo.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today (Monday), June 14., when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, and where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Lyle Linder, with military honors by Donald W. Gleason American Legion Post 190. Following cremation, burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Charles Reed

MARGARETVILLE — Charles (Chuck) Reed, 46, of Margaretville died June 12, 2004, at the home of his brother in Andes.

He was born Feb. 11, 1958, in Stamford, the son of Charles L. and Arlene (Wickham) Reed.

He was never married.

Chuck served in the United States Marines.

Chuck worked at Hanah Golf Course and the Meadows Golf Range, Margaretville, and was also a bartender.

He was a lifelong area resident. He enjoyed playing golf and playing with his great-nephew, Austin.

Chuck is survived by his mother, Arlene Tweedie, Margaretville; sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and George Bush, Margaretville; brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Kathy Reed, Andes; aunts and uncles; nieces and nephews; also great-nieces and great-nephews.

Calling hour will be prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with Diane Wickham officiating.

Inurnment of the urn will be in the Old Margaretville Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial gifts in memory of Charles Reed may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Peter M. VanSteenburg

JEFFERSON — Peter M. VanSteenburg, 51, of Austin Road died unexpectedly Saturday, June 12, 2004, because of injuries sustained when he fell off the bed of a truck.

Mr. VanSteenburg was born Jan. 2, 1953, in Oneonta and was a graduate of Stamford Central School.

For the past five years, he has been a maintenance mechanic at Jefferson Central School. Prior to that, he was employed at Storyhouse in Charlotteville for 15 years.

Mr. VanSteenburg attended the United Methodist Church in Stamford.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne L. (Kniskern) VanSteenburg, whom he married June 1, 1991; a son, Daryl J. VanSteenburg of Jefferson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lucien and Betty Kniskern of Jefferson; an uncle, Douglas Kniskern of Dorloo; a cousin, Darrell Kniskern of Dorloo; mother-in-law, Ruth VanSteenburg and her companion, Peter Salvaggi of Livingston Manor; a goddaughter, Haley Stricher of Schenectady; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, the school faculty and students, and many dear friends.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Burial will follow in Seward Valley Cemetery, Dorloo.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Peter M. VanSteenburg Memorial Fund, care of Jefferson Central School, or the Jefferson Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Marie Post and Elisabeth Post

HOBART — Graveside services for Marie Post, who passed away April 2, 2004, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating.

Family and friends are also invited to attend services for Elisabeth Post, following at 11 a.m. in Hobart Township Cemetery.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

John R. Hall

HARTWICK — A graveside committal service for John Rutherford Hall, 78, who died Dec. 31, 2003, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, in the Hartwick Cemetery, with the Rev. Laverne H. Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Mabel Jastremski

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mabel Bailey Jastremski, 90, formerly of Richfield Springs, and resident of The Meadows, Cooperstown, entered into eternal rest on Sunday night, June 13, 2004, at The Meadows.

She was born on Dec. 13, 1913, in the town of Richfield, daughter of the late Clarence and Martha Brownwick Bailey. A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, she was educated in Richfield Springs schools.

On Sept. 30, 1931, she married Bernard Jastremski in Richfield Springs. A loving and devoted union of 55 years, until Mr. Jastremski passed away in 1986.

Mabel had worked at the Knitting Mill in Richfield Springs and the Richfield Springs Central School. For many years she and her husband owned and operated the Richfield Springs Bowling Alley until their retirement. She had also served on the Board of Elections.

Mrs. Jastremski had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. She was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. She enjoyed bowling and playing bingo.

A caring and hopeful person, she loved people. She was a friend to many and will be truly missed.

Surviving are two sons, Bernard and his wife, Theresa Jastremski of Richfield Springs, and Joseph Jastremski of Poughkeepsie; two daughters and their husbands, Frances and Raymond Myers of Springfield, Ill., and Eleanor and Robert Brady of Titusville, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Trask of Herkimer; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Bernard, a sister Marion Hadsell preceded her in death.

Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, at 10 a.m. The Rev. John Roson will officiate. Mrs. Jastremski will be laid to rest with her husband in Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
