Marie Errol-Lessard

WORCESTER — Marie Errol-Lessard passed away in Tavares, Fla., on Friday, June 11, 2004, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Sept. 25, 1944, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Carlin) McCargo.

Marie was a resident of Worcester for 13 years before moving to Florida.

She is survived by her husband, Francis Lessard, of Tavares, Fla.; a daughter, Kathleen Spooner, and her husband, Cory, of Worcester; son, James Feeney, and his wife, Kelly, of Commack; son, Andrew Lessard, and his wife, Theresa, of Waterford; daughter, Lisa Saunders, and her husband, Bill, of Waterford; daughter, Milissa Lessard, of Cohoes, and daughter, Paula Cooper, and her husband, Mike, also of Cohoes; her grandchildren, Wyndham and Kaylee Spooner of Worcester, Casey and Jillian Feeney of Commack, Jaimie, Kyle and Renee Lessard of Waterford, Lindsey Saunders of Waterford, and Miranda and Christopher Cooper of Cohoes. She is also survived by her mother, Margaret McCargo of Belfast; sister, Margaret Sturgeon of Belfast; brother, Joseph McCargo of Belfast, Northern Ireland; and brother, Sean McCargo of England; several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Her greatest joys came from her family and from nursing. Marie was a school nurse at Worcester Central School and a nurse for Hospice of Lake & Sumter before her illness.

Before moving to Florida, she was a member of the Worcester Emergency Squad. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Mt. Dora, Fla.

There will be calling hours to celebrate the life of Marie on Saturday, June 19, 2004, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 155 Main St., Worcester, with a prayer service by the Rev. Paul Messner at the end of calling hours.

Her family would like to thank Hospice of Lake & Sumter for their care and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Lake & Sumter, 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.

Donald G. Higley

GLADSTONE, Mo. — Donald G. Higley, 69, Gladstone, died Saturday, June 12, 2004.

Donald was born Jan. 13, 1935, in Trout Creek, to George and Fannie (Puffer) Higley, and was a resident of the Delaware County area before joining the United States Air Force serving 21 years.

Donald then began his second career with the Department of Labor as a safety compliance officer and again retired after 21 years of service.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Barbara (Robinson) Higley; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Richard Bailey; son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Phyllis Higley; grandchildren, Jared and Alicia Bailey and Addison and Cameron Higley; two sisters, Myra Scofield, Walton, and Betty Winchester, Wells Bridge; one brother, Eugene Higley, Dixon, Ky.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives in the Delaware County area.

A Celebration of Donald's life will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, at his sister's house, Myra Scofield, 118 Scott Road, Walton. Please bring a dish to pass for togetherness in the celebration of Donald.

The family requests no flowers and suggests instead, memorial contributions in Donald's memory to Harvesters Community Food Network, 1811 N. Topping, Kansas City, MO 64120, or to the National Association of Clock and Watch Collectors Museum, 514 Poplar, Columbia, PA 17512.

Bernice May Varall

WALTON — Bernice (Bernie) May Varall, 57, passed away Saturday, June 12, 2004, after a long battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred, of Walton; her mother, Gladys Crane, of Walton; mother-in-law, Elsie Varall of Monroe; son, John (Crystal) Scofield of Walton; daughter, Sharon Burr of Walton; sister, Dinah Crane of Warwick; two stepdaughters, Kristy (Pete) Rose of Sloatsburg and Gina (Guy) Clark of Circleville. She is also survived by six grandchildren, James Beers, Summer Burr, Aron Burr and Abigail May Scofield, all of Walton, Anika Clark of Circleville, and Abigail Rose of Sloatsburg; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Bernie was predeceased in 1988 by her late husband, Stephen D. Scofield.

She enjoyed working many years as a bartender and waitress. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and her poodles. She also enjoyed building and fixing things.

Her family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Christ Church, 41 Gardner Place, Walton, with the Rev. Suzanne Cole officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the American Cancer Society or the Trout Creek Emergency Squad be made in her memory.

Irene Dailey Fox

PINEHURST, N.C. — Irene Dailey Fox, 82, of Pinehurst died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at The Village Chapel in Pinehurst with Chaplain Larry Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 22, 1921, in Barton, to the late Willis C. and Helen Coleman Dailey. She lived and attended school in Oneonta and graduated from Pasadena Junior College.

She worked for IBM in Endicott and New York City. She lived for many years in the Syracuse area and worked as an office manager for a real estate firm.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard O. Fox; a son, Richard Willis Fox, wife Kathleen O'Connell of Chapel Hill; a daughter, Carol L. Fox of Doylestown, Pa.; a brother, Willis C. Dailey of Oneonta; a sister, Shirley Baker of Oneonta; and two grandchildren.

A sister, Emogene Dailey, preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to FirstHealth Hospice, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374.

Thomas Brashear

SCHUYLER LAKE — Thomas Brashear, 60, passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

He was born Dec. 20, 1943, in Oklahoma, the son of Robert L. and Martha E. (Willaughlin) Brashear.

He was a member of the Richfield Springs Veterans Club, where he served as president.

Survivors include three sons, Christopher and his wife, Angela Brashear, Jonathan Brashear and Jesse and wife, Jessica Brashear, all of Oneonta; a grandson, Elias Brashear; his sister, Pat and husband, Jerry McNeal; brothers, James Brashear, Glen Brashear, Larry Brashear, Cecile Reynolds and Jack Reynolds; and several nieces and nephews.

At the request of Mr. Brashear, he was cremated and a remembrance service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Stanley Wickham

ONEONTA — Committal services for Stanley F. Wickham, who passed away March 26, 2004, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004, in the Harpersfield Cemetery with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell officiating.

Elizabeth Johnson, George E. Johnson, and Ann Durisek

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — The community is invited to a memorial service for Elizabeth Durisek Johnson, her husband, George E. Johnson, and her sister, Ann Durisek, on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Dixon Bartle, rector, officiating.

Elizabeth Durisek Johnson passed away on June 3, 1997.

She was born in Little Falls, raised in Richfield Springs on River Street and was educated at Richfield Springs High School. She was married to George E. Johnson for 67 years. Mr. Johnson died in the fall of 2003.

George E. Johnson passed away on Sept. 30, 2003.

A resident of Tucson, Ariz., he was the husband of the late Elizabeth Durisek Johnson, who passed away in 1997.

He was born in St. Joseph, Mo., grew up in Lincoln, Neb., graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1929, and moved to New York City where he spent most of his career.

He had poor vision his whole life and was declared legally blind in 1955.

He was inducted into the NAVA Hall of Fame in 1997, in recognition of outstanding achievement and commitment to the development of new retirement and savings products for the financial service industry.

Surviving George and Elizabeth are one son, Robert A. Johnson of Charlottesville, Va.; a daughter, Susan Hartdegen of Tucson, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A son, George E. Johnson III, preceded them in death.

Ann Durisek passed away on Sept. 2, 2000.

She was born in Little Falls, raised in Richfield Springs and graduated from Richfield Springs High School with the Class of 1926. She furthered her education at the University of New York Normal School in Oneonta in 1929.

She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse outside Richfield Springs. She was fully certified to teach elementary and secondary education in 1940. She received her master's degree from Columbia University in 1951, and taught school in West Hempstead, Long Island, until her retirement in 1973.

For 20 years she and her sister, Elizabeth Durisek Johnson, provided four scholarships per year to deserving high school graduates of Richfield Springs High School in their parents' memory.

Ann and Elizabeth are survived by a brother, George Durisek of Vernon; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Two brothers, Stephen and William Durisek, preceded them in death.

Following the memorial service, a committal service will be held in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Susan Van Cott Lanham

BOULDER, Colo. — Susan Van Cott Lanham passed away June 13, 2004, in Boulder.

Susan was born July 2, 1948, in Sidney, the daughter of John F. and Shirley H. Van Cott.

Susan grew up in Unadilla, and graduated from Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pa. Susan was a Rotary Exchange Student to Malmo, Sweden, and then attended Elmira College. She later graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in art history.

Susan met her husband of 30 years, Robert Lanham, while in Colorado. They were married on Jan. 23, 1974, and settled in Boulder. Their beloved son, John Robert Lanham, was born on Feb. 12, 1983.

Susan was a voracious reader and instilled an excitement and love for books and learning in all the people she touched. Susan managed the Table Mesa Bookstore and delighted in selecting and critiquing appropriate books for her customers' varied interests. Her intellect and analytical mind were a welcome challenge to us all, especially during political discussions. Susan was a tireless advocate for those less fortunate.

Susan was a lover of travel, gardening and the arts, especially vocal music performed by her son John and his various choirs.

Susan was a gourmet cook and loved nothing better than planning and executing a magnificent meal for guests.

Susan is survived by her husband, Robert; her son, John Robert and his girlfriend, Eve Ardell; her mother, Shirley Van Cott of Unadilla; her brother, Craig Van Cott and sister-in-law, Sue Van Cott of Unadilla, brother Jeffrey Van Cott of Vera Cruz, Mexico; nieces, Zoe Van Cott Vandermeulen of Boston, Rachel Van Cott of Santa Cruz, Calif., Jill Van Cott of Marietta, Ga.; and nephews, Leif Van Cott of Dover, N.H., Alex and Ian Van Cott of Unadilla, and Dustin Van Cott of Port Washington; as well as four grandnieces and one grandnephew. Susan also leaves behind her dearest friend, Gerry Accomazzo, who was by her side throughout her illness and with her when she passed away.

Susan was predeceased by her father, John F. Van Cott.

Susan was a lover of the outdoors, so we ask those who wish to attend her funeral to come to the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla at noon on Saturday, June 19, 2004. A gathering at her childhood home for friends and family will follow.

Those who wish to make contributions may do so to the Unadilla Public Library, Unadilla, NY 13849, or to the charity of one's choice in Susan's memory.

Local funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla.

Wilfred L. Latta

GILBOA — Wilfred L. Latta, 74, of Flat Creek Road passed away on Monday, June 14, 2004, at his home.

He was born on May 30, 1930, in Catskill, the son of Ralph and Annott Chamberlin Latta.

On Oct. 23, 1955, he married Loretta Haskin, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Cindy and Daryl Buel of Broome Center; his son, Ted Latta and Camie Olson of Grand Gorge; grandchildren, Mandy and Daryl Van Valkenburgh of Conesville, Jessy Buel of Broome Center, Arthur Choate of Utica, and Tyler Latta of Grand Gorge; and great-granddaughter, Keely Van Valkenburgh of Conesville; his brother, Ronald Latta of Coxsackie; and sister, Gail Forkan of Vancouver, Wash.; his mother-in-law, Maude Haskin of Broome Center; sister-in-law, Beatrice Mattice of Gilboa; brother-in-law, John Laux Sr. of Mackey; and several nieces and nephews.

Willie was serving as president of the Gilboa-Conesville School Board of Education having been on the board for 25 years. He graduated from Gilboa in 1948, and served in the United States Army from 1948-1955.

He was a member of the Susquehanna Trail Post No. 1764, American Legion, president of the Gilboa-Conesville Booster Club and member of the Gilboa United Methodist Church. Willie spent many years as a coach in the Gilboa Little League and as his grandchildren grew, he never missed a ballgame, regardless of weather or distance. He was passionate in his support of Gilboa-Conesville School and its students, especially the sports program.

He was employed by Perini & Ball during construction of the Blenheim-Gilboa Power Project and retired from the New York Power Authority in 1991. He was currently employed part time by the Town of Gilboa.

He was predeceased by a sister, June Laux, and in April 2004 by a brother, Glenn Latta.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Gilboa United Methodist Church with Pastor Kristina Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Gilboa Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gilboa-Conesville Booster Club, Gilboa-Conesville Central School, Route 990V, Gilboa, NY 12076 or Gilboa United Methodist Church, Route 990V, Gilboa, NY 12076.

Anna Marie Smith

SCHENECTADY — Anna Marie Smith, 70, passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, June 13, 2004.

Born in Seward, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Marie Southworth.

Anna was a veteran in the United States Army, serving her country in Japan. Anna worked as a registered nurse at the Stratton VA Medical Center, retiring 10 years ago. She was also a longtime member of the Women of the Moose. After retiring she volunteered her time at the VA hospital, and also gave her time to numerous charitable organizations, Anna was a loving, caring person who will be dearly missed by many.

She was predeceased by her two sons, Michael and Nathaniel Smith, and her sister, Melba Southworth.

Anna is survived by her daughter, Deborah Noble and her husband, Charles of Alabama; four grandchildren, Celeste, Johan, Amy and Tiffany; her adopted granddaughter, Eula; and her three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Kimberly and Cody. She is also survived by her sister, Beverly Carr of Richmondville; her two brothers, Richard Southworth and his wife, Deanna, of Cobleskill, and Harold Southworth and his wife, Jackie of Worcester; and her companion of 28 years, Gale Graham.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Route 55-South of Central Avenue). Calling hours will be held on Thursday, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Susan L. Winters

COLUMBUS — Susan Lynn (Gage) Winters, 37, of the town of Columbus died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born on Aug. 18, 1966, in Cheektowaga, the daughter of Alfred and Carolyn (Strope) Gage.

She was married to Douglas James Winters on April 9, 1994. He survives.

She spent her childhood in the New Berlin area. She was a graduate of New Berlin Central School, and attended Herkimer County Community College for two years.

Susan was a very loving wife and mother and "my best friend." She will be missed and never forgotten.

Susan was a member of the Support Group on the Internet for People with Arterial Venous Malformation.

Susan is survived by one daughter, Morgan Elizabeth Winters, town of Columbus; father and mother-in-law, Wendell S. and Joyce E. Stockholm, Albany; brothers, Jeff Gage, Jack's Reef, Brian Gage, Wrightstown, N.J., Steve Gage, Central Bridge, Scott Gage, Knightdale, N.C.; and sister, Shari Gage, Oneonta.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating. Calling hour is from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Antonio Licata

DAVENPORT CENTER — Antonio "Tony" Licata, 82, of Davenport Center passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born April 18, 1922, in Racalmuto, Sicily, the son of Salvatore and Salvatrice (Laurincella) Licata.

He married Nina Paone on Nov. 6, 1954, in New York City. After moving here in 1957, Tony operated a dairy farm in Davenport Center. He remained active as a farmer up until his recent illness.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

Tony loved farming, as well as the many special times spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Nina Licata, of Davenport Center; his children, Salvatore (Jeanne) Licata of Cooperstown, Sally Licata of Harriman, Tenn., and her friend, Tom Stokes of Knoxville, Tenn., and Anthony Licata of Davenport Center; his two very special grandchildren, Kristen Licata of Albany and Amanda Licata of Cooperstown; a sister, Sister Eduarda Licata of Italy; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three sisters and one brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, June 19, 2004, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call on Friday, June 18, 2004, after 3 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marjorie M. Sutton

DELHI — Marjorie M. Sutton, 86, of Delhi died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born April 19, 1918, in Fremont Center, the daughter of Nelson and Ethel Misner.

She married Orley Sutton on March 8, 1951, in Yuma, Ariz. He predeceased her on March 14, 1991.

A 1936 graduate of Roscoe High School, Marjorie and her husband moved to the Delhi area in 1951. In 1973, they moved to Masonville. They eventually settled back in Delhi, where they resided for nearly 50 years.

Marjorie was an animal lover and especially liked horseback riding. She also enjoyed flowers and gardening.

She was employed as an assembly line worker at Bendix in Sidney for 30 years.

She is survived by 12 nieces; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth Misner of California, Claude Misner of Roscoe, and Nelson Neil of Roscoe; and three sisters, Ethel Elwood of Pennsylvania, Shirley Upchurch of California, and Josephine Bowers of Roscoe.

Memorial services in Marjorie's memory will be held at a later date at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Contributions can be made to The Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Delhi, or O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.
