William James Hoffman, Dorothy Ruth Hoffman and William Walter Hoffman

FORT MYERS, Fla. — On Sunday, June 27, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the Schenevus Cemetery there will be a graveside memorial cremation interment.

Services will be for William James Hoffman, born Aug. 8, 1921, who passed away May 23, 1996; Dorothy Ruth (Smith) Hoffman, born Dec. 28, 1921, who passed away Feb. 11, 2004; and William Walter Hoffman, born June 12, 1951, who passed away Jan. 9, 2001, who were longtime area residents of the Schenevus community and the Carmel area.

William J. and Dorothy were well-known and active in area V.F.W. Posts, William being a charter member and commander of the Carmel V.F.W. Post, as well as being a former member of the Schenevus V.F.W. Post, and a member of the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge 592. Dorothy was a member of both V.F.W. Posts Auxiliaries, Masonic Eastern Stars and very involved in the local communities.

William and Dorothy were married for 54 years before William's death.

The elder Hoffmans and their son, William W. (Billy) Hoffman moved to Florida in the 1970s. Bill and Dorothy retired, and son Billy followed and lived with them most of his life.

Bill and Dorothy while in Florida were avid boaters and motor home enthusiasts and traveled extensively all over the United States. They were very active in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, with Florida being where they lived, but this area always remained home.

They loved their New York friends and family, and this interment service is an expression of love they have for their Schenevus and Carmel area friends and family they loved so much.

Survivors include their daughters, Dorothy (Dee) Singleton of Hutchinson, Kan., and Patricia Elliott of Dade City, Fla.; grandchildren, Lisa (Benjamin) Bascomb of Schenevus, Tina Corbin of Las Vegas, Nev., Jason Elliott of Miami, Fla., Heather Elliott of Tampa, Fla., and Bruce Hoffman Jr. of Maryland; great-grandchildren, Brycen, Benjamin, Margaret and Brandon Bascomb of Schenevus, and James and Debra Corbin of Las Vegas.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.Hobart.

Fayette J. Fowlston

FRANKLIN — A graveside committal service will be held for Fayette J. Fowlston in the Franklin Cemetery on Saturday, June 26, 2004, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Walter Schlundt officiating.

Fayette passed away March 3, 2004, at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Fla.

The family formerly resided in Franklin. They would welcome your presence to celebrate her life.

Janice Riddell

COLLIERSVILLE — Janice Church Riddell, 74, went to be with the Lord, her husband and son, on Father's Day, Sunday, June 20, 2004. She died at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Jan was born Aug. 3, 1929, in Oneonta, the daughter of Lynn E. and Edith (Still) Church.

She attended the Oneonta schools and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1946. Jan then attended Rochester Institute of Technology.

She married Robert V. Riddell on July 24, 1956, at the Elm Park Methodist Church in Oneonta. He predeceased her on April 9, 2002.

Jan worked at Bresee's Department Store briefly, then went to work at New York Telephone Company in Oneonta for the next 14 years. She left that position when her daughter was born. She was a very devoted wife and mother.

Jan was a member of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Riddell Kent and son-in-law, Steven L. Kent of Oneonta; her sisters, Edna Brandow of Binghamton and Edith Loller of Fairport; a brother, Edward Church and his wife, Irene, of Oneonta; and her stepmother-in-law, Helen Riddell, of Maryland. She is also survived by several nieces and a nephew.

She was predeceased by her son, Robert B. Riddell; her sisters, Gladys C. Swanson of Orlando, Fla., and Helen Slocum of Oneonta; and her parents.

The family would like to thank the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center nurses and staff for their excellent and compassionate care during Janice's time there.

At Janice's request she was cremated. There will be no calling hours, however a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, with their family friend, the Rev. Gail Baird, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of her son, Bobby Riddell to the Leukemia Society of America, Central New York Chapter, 847 James St., Suite 201, Syracuse, NY 13203.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Charles Groff

UNADILLA — Charles Groff of Unadilla went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 20, 2004, after a brief illness at Albany Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 2, 1922, the son of Charles Groff and Johanna Iliar Groff in Somers. He grew up in Norwich and graduated from Norwich High School.

After graduation he joined the Army-Air Force in 1939, and became a member of the 8th Air Force Division. He was a veteran of World War II in which he flew 26 missions as an aerial gunner. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, ETO ribbon with four Battle Stars, the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Presidential Citation with one Oak Leaf Cluster.

After serving his country, he attended Indiana Technology Institute where he became an aeronautical engineer and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He worked as an engineer for Bendix and resided in Unadilla for 30 years.

He married Martha I. Benson on June 26, 1948, and she predeceased him on June 19, 1996.

He is survived by his loving family. Two sons, James Groff and wife Helen, of Franklin, and Steven Groff and wife Karla, of Garden Valley, Idaho; and one daughter, Sonja Puffer and husband Jerry, of Unadilla. He is survived by his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. They are Heather Thomson and her husband, Jason, of Unadilla, Dillon Groff of Franklin, Jeremiah Groff and wife Jessica, of Keystone Heights, Fla., Jessica Groff of Keystone Heights, and Krista, Erika and Shelby Puffer of Unadilla. He is also survived by a great-grandson named after him, Charles Hayden Groff of Keystone Heights. He is also survived by his sister, Lillian Connine and husband Bob, of Sun City, Fla. Charlie is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Charlie had a great love for the outdoors and wildlife. He had a great passion for elk and deer hunting and steelhead fishing in Washington. Charlie was a member of the Masons, the Shriners, the NRA and the 8th Air Force Historical Society.

At Charlie's request there will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Unadilla on Thursday, June 24, 2004, at 2 p.m. with Father Michael J. Shank officiating.

It is the wish of Charlie that expressions of sympathy go to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Bassett Hospital Cancer Center.

Paul P. Power Sr.

STAMFORD — Paul Patterson Power Sr. died peacefully on Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in Stamford at the age of 80, surrounded by his wife and three children.

Paul was born on Aug. 24, 1923, in Wilkinsburg, Pa. He was the son of George Lewin and Eleanor Virtue Ailes Power.

Paul graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in 1944. He was a veteran of World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. Paul participated in the Mermansk Run in the North Atlantic. Paul was active in global trade with the United States Military. He established MilBrands International in Stamford and then his own business with his son for 15 years.

Paul was a past district governor of Rotary International and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was past president of the Stamford Golf Club. An outdoor writer, he had a column in 16 newspapers in Pennsylvania and was a member of the Outdoor Writer's Association. Paul traveled worldwide with his wife, telling jokes, writing and making friends with every stranger he met.

His loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Jeanne Kuenzig Power, survives Paul. He is also survived by their children, Paul P. Power Jr., his wife, Maryelizabeth Giery Power, of Stamford, their children, Paul P. Power III, of Antioch, Calif., Sean A. Power and Padraig D. Power, of Stamford, Peggy Jo Power Gifford and husband Randall, of Clifton Park, their children, Terri Jean "Charlie" Gifford, Bryah W. and Catherine McCann Gifford and Amy A. Gifford, of Clifton Park, Nanci Jeanne Power Dunbar Newell and her partner, JoAnne Marshall, of San Jose, Calif., and Nanci's children, Lisa Christine Wan, of Woodside, Calif., and Kathryn Amy Sutherland, of Portola Valley, Calif., Michael and Matthew Wan and Grace Sutherland are Paul's great-grandchildren. Sandro and Manuela Lombardi and their children, Marco and Carolina Lombardi, of Rome, Italy; his brother, Thomas R. Power and his wife, Jean; sister, Dorothy Power Gunsallus; sister-in-law, Janet Power, along with many nieces and nephews and two other "honorary daughters," Joey Darling and Patty Heath, also survive.

His brother, William A. Power, and Georgia Lou Power Locke, predeceased Paul.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 24, from 1 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 25, at the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford with the Rev. Patricia Shafer officiating.

Burial will follow the service at Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Stamford Presbyterian Church, 96 Main St., Stamford, NY 12167 or Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY. 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Thelma Roosa

ONEONTA — Thelma V. "Tekla" Roosa of Oneonta was called home to God on Monday, June 21, 2004, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1908, in Hornell.

She was predeceased by her father and mother, Daniel and Sarah (Winder) Roosa; her brothers, Carl and Paul; and a sister, Dorothy Duffy.

Thelma graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester in 1948. She also did post-graduate work in surgery at Strong Memorial. She retired from nursing in Rochester and moved to Oneonta where she lived for 30 years. For a period of time she also worked at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital. She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Church.

She is survived by her loving and devoted friends, Madge Elliott, Barbara Farrell, Joanne LaMonica and Mary Downs, all of Oneonta. Surviving also are nieces and nephews, Mike (Mary) Duffy of Silver Springs, Pat Loid of Burdett, Mary (Jim) Cox of Hornell, Valerie (Ed) McGee of Rochester, Geri (B.J.) Jones of California, Joe Duffy of Hornell, Marcia (Don) Merring of Canisteo, Dolores (Bob) Gerhart of Bath, Barbara Hicks of Hornell, Carl Danny (Donna) Roosa of Magnolia, Del.; and several great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, June 25, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Edward Ryan officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

It was Thelma's request that there be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Duane F. Cornell

SIDNEY — Duane F. Cornell, 63, of Sidney passed away peacefully Monday, June 21, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 10, 1941, son of the late Freeland R. and Gertrude (Herring) Cornell in Walton.

Duane graduated from Oneonta High School in 1959 and enlisted into the United States Navy. He served his country until 1961 when he was honorably discharged.

After the Navy, Duane enrolled at the State University College at Oneonta.

On Aug. 22, 1964, he married Eileen Mullin, who survives.

In January of 1965 he entered the New York State Police Academy. Duane proudly served as a State Trooper at Troop C in Sidney until his retirement in 1994. He was employed as a bus driver for the Sidney Central School District for the last nine years.

Mr. Cornell was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney.

Duane was a devoted family man who always put his family first. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Eileen M. Cornell of Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Laurie Cornell of Minneapolis, Minn., and Daniel and Deidre Cornell of Ithaca; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Timothy Gascon of Masonville; son, John Cornell and Shannon Eggleston of Bainbridge; four grandchildren, Courtney and Cassandra Gascon and Sean and Molly Cornell; treasured friends and "traveling buddies" Fran and Bertha Redmond of East Guilford and a sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Bill Knowles of Sidney.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Due to construction at his church, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 25, at the United Methodist Church, Liberty Street in Sidney. The Rev. Fr. James Cox will officiate.

Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Trooper Foundation, 3 Airport Park Blvd., Latham, NY 12110-1441.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Franklin J. Stewart

HARTWICK — Mr. Franklin Jay Stewart, 68, of Gulf Road in Hartwick died Tuesday morning, June 22, 2004, at his home.

Frank was born on Nov. 29, 1935, in Ilion, a son of Percy and Nellie (Donohau) Stewart.

He married Wanda L. McLean on Oct. 9, 1954, in the parsonage of the Hartwick Christian Church.

Raised in West Exeter, he was a longtime resident of Hartwick.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Frank is survived by three daughters, Pamela J. Stewart and her fianc้, Gary Nebauer, of Hartwick, Lori K. Stewart of Troy and Jodi L. Bottita and her husband, Jack, of Hartwick; an adopted son, Rodney Shute of Cooperstown; seven grandchildren, Alicia Wellman and her fianc้, Luke Poole, John Franklin Field, Sean Patrick Field, Samuel Joseph Stewart, Christopher Scott Ray, Roxanne Marie Bottita and Jack Bottita Jr.; three great-grandsons, Dante, Andrew and Ian; one sister, Betty Ferrusi and her husband, Pat; and six sisters-in-law, Edna Ruland, Beatrice Crockford, Beulah Osborne, Columbine Oblak, Marjorie Snyder and Alberta Eastman.

He was predeceased by one son, Willard W. Stewart, who died Nov. 5, 1977, and one granddaughter, Emma-Leigh Frances Stewart, who died in August of 1994.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2004, in the Hartwick Christian Church, with the Rev. Laverne H. Saxer, pastor, officiating.

Immediately following the memorial service, Frank's family will receive friends at the Hartwick Fire Hall for a time of refreshment and fellowship.

Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may take the form of a memorial gift to the Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Wanda and Frank, or to the Hartwick Rod and Gun Club, PO Box 251, Hartwick NY 13348 to help sponsor children to their Summer Camp Program.

Arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth, funeral directors, Cooperstown.

Ethel S. Mable

DELHI — Graveside services for Ethel Schwille Mable, who passed away Jan. 31, 2004, will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2004, in Woodland Cemetery with the Rev. Miriam Hathaway officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Elsa M. Peck

SIDNEY CENTER — Elsa M. Peck, 89, formerly of Sidney Center, and Sumter, S.C., passed away on Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Sunset Estate Nursing Facility in Tecumseh, Okla.

She was born May 27, 1915, daughter of the late Sherman S. and Corabell E. (Hotchkiss) All in Kortright.

Elsa married Maxwell C. Peck on Feb. 28, 1937, in South Kortright. He predeceased her on Feb. 6, 1986.

She was a family caregiver for many years. Elsa took in foster children in Delaware County for seven years and took care of residents of Letchworth Village for seven years.

Mrs. Peck was known for her crafts and handsewn quilts that she displayed in the area. She was a past treasurer of the Women of the Moose No. 502, Sidney, and volunteered at the Food Pantry and Share Program in Sidney. Mrs. Peck was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Sidney.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Maxwell C. and Jane Peck Jr. Gulfport, Miss.; three daughters, Sharron A. and Herbert Sutton Jr., of Tecumseh, Okla., Charlotte L. Thornhill, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Nicolle R. Peck-Lesley and Ronnie D. Lesley, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Robert and Aleen All, of Oneonta; sister, Isobell Moxley, of Laurens; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She is also predeceased by a daughter, Maxine Peck, sister, Agnes Dibble, granddaughter, Tahli Renee Peck, and grandson, Phillip Sutton.

Friends may call Monday, June 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney

Funeral services will be Monday, June 28, at 1 p.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Sidney. The Rev. James Vargo will officiate.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Sidney Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church or the Sidney Center Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel Sidney.

William C. Bodie

NEW BERLIN — William (Bill) C. Bodie, 55, of New Berlin, died on Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Veterans Hospital in Albany. He was born on March 20, 1949, in Kingston, son of Charles and Mabel (Ostrander) Bodie.

His childhood was spent in the Kingston and Waterville areas. He joined the Navy in 1967 and served as a Navy Seabee MCB 128 during two tours in the Vietnam War. He received his GED in the Navy and was discharged in 1969.

He married Lillian Doyle on March 20, 1998.

He worked for Doolens Trucking in Frankfort.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Eileen and Kevin Prosser Sr., of South Edmeston, Lillian and David Gipe Sr., of Columbus, and two sons, Mark and Kristi Olsson Bodie of Port Ewen and Richard and Rachel Olsson Bodie of New Berlin. Also surviving are nine sisters, Bonnie and Sam O'Dell; Janet Reynolds; Mary and Mike Orbacz; Kandy and Edward Mendock; Vivian Bodie; Mabel and Craig Coumbes; Jenny Osborne; Lee and David Foster; Chay Bodie; three brothers, Charles P. and Karen Bodie Jr.; Wayne and Paula Bodie; and Dean and Violet Bodie; grandchildren, David Gipe Jr., Lawrence Gipe, Raymond Gipe, Kevin Prosser Jr., Kaitlin Prosser, Mari Olsson and Mark Olsson, along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by one sister, Phyllis Mott.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin with the Rev. Beverly Butler officiating. Friends may call from noon to 3 p.m. at the church before the funeral.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Peter H. Kemmeren

BAINBRIDGE — Peter H. Kemmeren, 77, of Bainbridge, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at his home.

He was born March 6, 1927, son of the late Mathys and Flora (Smits) Kemmeren in Waspik, Netherlands.

Peter married Johanna Elisabeth Maria Vesseur on Feb. 13, 1956, in Tilburg, Netherlands. They immigrated to the United States in 1956 and resided in Orange County before moving to Bainbridge to operate their dairy farm until they retired in 1994.

Peter was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Bainbridge and a charter member of the Bainbridge Lions Club.

Mr. Kemmeren is survived by his wife, Johanna Kemmeren, of Bainbridge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Matthew and Marie Kemmeren, of Los Lunas, New Mexico, John P. and Dianne Kemmeren, of Bainbridge; two daughters and a son-in-law, Floratina Kemmeren, of Unadilla, Marie and Robert Hofmann, of Oxford, seven grandchildren, Matthias and Joanna Kemmeren, of Illinois, Jacob Kemmeren, of New Mexico, Peter R. and Katy Kemmeren, of Bainbridge, Robert Jr. and Kathryn Hofmann, of Oxford, two brothers and two sisters.

Peter was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

Friends may call Monday, June 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Tuesday, June 29, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Bainbridge. The Rev. Fr. Robert Dwyer, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815 or the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
