Brett R. Swift
SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Brett Richard Swift, 20, of South New Berlin, died on Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends.
He was born on Oct. 29, 1983, in Oneonta, son of Jacquelyn Tiffany and Richard L. Swift.
His childhood was spent in South New Berlin and he was a 2002 graduate of Unadilla Valley High School. He also graduated from the Central Square Heavy Equipment School in Central Square.
He worked for Ken Dibbell of the Twin Ponds Farm, Bruce Beckert in Custom Plowing and Fieldwork and the Aqua Valley Spring Water Company in Edmeston.
He is survived by his parents and one brother, Craig Swift, at home; a sister, Tiffany Swift, of the Town of Columbus, and his grandmother, Doris Tiffany, of Oneonta. Also surviving are four uncles, Kenneth and Eileen Tiffany, of North Carolina, David and Sherry Swift, of Nevada, Bill and Linda Swift, of New Jersey, Fred and Cathy Swift, of Maryland, and one aunt, Anne and Jim Cullen, of New Hampshire, two great aunts, Jane and Frank Dulyea, of New Jersey, and Dolores and Billy Gonser, of Oneonta, three great-uncles, Kenneth Swift, of South New Berlin, Joseph and Shirley Hixson, of Pennsylvania, and Clarence and Shirley Nichols, of New York, and many cousins.
Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.
Funeral services for Brett will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday June 26, at the First Baptist Church, South New Berlin, with Pastor Kurt Funke officiating.
Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, South New Berlin.
Memorial donations may be made to the Brett Swift Memorial Scholarship and sent to the Unadilla Valley Central School District, c/o Ronnie Wadsworth, Community Schools, New Berlin, NY 13411.

John Scott Sheldon
BROOMFIELD, Colo. — John Scott Sheldon, 42, formerly of Richfield Springs, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at home.
He was born on March 8, 1962, in Herkimer, son of William and Deanna Wilbert Sheldon.
John was raised in Richfield Springs and was a member of the Richfield Springs High School graduating class of 1979.
A carpenter by trade, he spent five years in Phoenix before returning to Richfield Springs. In 1994, he moved to Colorado where he went to work for the Deer Creek Construction Company in Westminster.
John was engaged to Tracy Swendlund, in Broomfield, who sadly passed away on May 19, 2004.
During his years at Richfield Springs High School, he was active in varsity sports. He played baseball, basketball and football. He proudly held the distinction of being the first football running back to run 1,000 yards in a season. This was accomplished in his junior year of high school.
John will be greatly missed by his many friends and especially his family.
Surviving besides his parents are three brothers, James R. Sheldon of Oneonta, Thomas William and his wife, Laura Sheldon, of Raleigh, N.C., Richard Todd Sheldon and his fiancee, Norma Wilmot, of Fonda; and one niece, Sydney Sheldon of Raleigh, N.C.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 28, at 7 p.m. at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, will officiate. The family will be present at the funeral home to receive relatives and friends two hours before the memorial service from 5 to 7 p.m.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Mountain View Mental Health Club, Oneonta. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Joyce M. Burman
UNADILLA — Joyce M. Burman, 54, of Unadilla, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at her home.
She was born April 9, 1950, in Bainbridge.
Joyce was a machinist at the Amphenol Corporation in Sidney when she retired in 1994.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Katrina and Roland Teribury, of Bainbridge, and a friend, Tina Dewey, of Unadilla; a stepson, Kevin and Rebecca Schriver, of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister and two brothers.
She is predeceased by two brothers.
A Celebration of Life service will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad

Michael Ciaravino
GRAND GORGE — Michael Ciaravino, 78, of Grand Gorge, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.
He was born Sept. 14, 1925, in Grand Gorge to Pietro Ciaravino and Caterina Lo Presti. He graduated from Grand Gorge Central School.
Mike married Martha J. Miller on Nov. 3, 1956, in Windham.
He was a truck driver for 18 years for McBride Transportation of Goshen. He was the owner of M.C. Auto Service in Grand Gorge for 37 years.
Mike was captain of the Grand Gorge Rescue Squad for 10 years, a retired firefighter and served as a committee member for the Town of Roxbury Republican Committee. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge. He loved hunting, fishing, car racing, bowling and the Yankees.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Ciaravino, of Grand Gorge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael G. and Lisa Ciaravino, of Grand Gorge and Bryan and Brenda Ciaravino, of Conesville; three grandchildren, Michael S., Kyle and Corey Ciaravino; his brother-in-law, Richard and Edna Mae Miller and several cousins.
Calling hours are Friday, June 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. William F. Hawes officiating.
Contributions, in memory of Michael Ciaravino, may be made to the American Heart Association, 59 Court St., 4th floor, Binghamton, NY 13901.

John Hitter
CONESVILLE — John Hitter, of Conesville, passed away at the Samuel Stratten VA Hospital, Monday, June 21, 2004.
He was born in Ozone Park on Sept. 27, 1919, the son of Peter and Pauline Hitter. He was married to Vita Illardo, who predeceased him.
John served his country in World War II in the United States Army and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone and the Pacific.
He had various careers in his life retiring as a truck driver for the A&P and Local 807. He was a loyal communicant of St. Philip Neri Church in Grand Gorge. John served for many years as the sacristan. His faith and his country were both important parts of his life along with an avid knowledge and love of country music.
John will be remembered and missed by his loyal caregiver Beverly Harris and her family. His daughter and grandchildren, many friends and neighbors in Conesville, nieces and nephews will always remember him.
He will be interred in the Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, on Friday, June 25.
Local arrangements were entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
David Chesebrough
EDMESTON — A memorial service for Dr. David B. Chesebrough will be held at the Second Baptist Church on North Street in Edmeston on Saturday, June 26, 2004. Family will welcome friends at the church beginning at 10 a.m. The service will follow at 11 a.m. conducted by Dr. Jim Atwell.
An Edmeston native, David Chesebrough was born on March 14, 1932, a son of the late Florence Chesebrough.
He is survived by one brother, John Chesebrough of Edmeston; one daughter, Brenda Boscarino of Alpine, Calif.; one son, Timothy Chesebrough, Phoenix, Ariz.; and one grandson, Tyler Boscarino.
For 25 years, Dr. Chesebrough was pastor in American Baptist Churches in the United States. Later, he was an American history professor at Illinois State University for 15 years. He was the author of seven books.
After a long illness, Dr. Chesebrough died at his home in Illinois on April 29, 2004.
Bruce Van Blarcom
ONEONTA — Bruce Van Blarcom entered the Lord's arms on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, after a brief illness and hospitalization at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
Bruce was born at Good Samaritan Hospital, in Suffern, on Jan. 22, 1957.
He is survived by his parents, Georgia E. and Allen Denney, of LaCrosse, Va.; a brother, Carl B. Van Blarcom and his fiancee, Darcy Alger, of Unadilla; sister and brother in-law, Elva and Roy Sampson, of Otego; aunt and uncle, Edna and Wayne Chase, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a special stepbrother, Eric Denny, of Virginia, and stepsisters, Holly Stringham of Virginia, Polly Southall of Virginia, Jennifer Denney of Virginia, Mary Kay Williams of Georgia and cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, Raymond Van Blarcom.
For the past 30 years, Bruce was a family member of the Upstate Home for Children and Adults Inc. For the first 28 years, Bruce lived in Oneonta and Otego. For the past two years, Bruce lived at The Pines, located at Kelly Corners Road in the Town of Oneonta.
Bruce attended the Otego, Trout Creek and Upstate Home for Children Inc. school programs.
Bruce worked for 28 years at the Otsego County ARC, mainly in the furniture restoration department. He participated in the Otsego County ARC's ODS Program for the past two years.
Bruce lived and enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved his family and his good friends at both the Upstate Homes for Children Inc. and the Otsego County ARC. Bruce could always put a smile on anyone's face. He very much enjoyed horses, cooking, playing the guitar and singing, bowling, listening to country and western music, working in and around the house and in the garden. Bruce was a member of the Lutheran Atonement Church.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 25, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Messner, pastor of the Lutheran Atonement Church, officiating. The family will accept callers Friday from 9 to 10 a.m., at the funeral home.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Otego.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bruce's name, may be made to the Upstate Home for Children and Adults Inc.

Linda Claire Coleman
COOPERSTOWN — Linda Claire Coleman, 38, of Cooperstown died Thursday morning, June 24, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown following a courageous battle with cancer.
Linda was born on Sept. 30, 1965, in West Chester, Pa., a daughter of William H. and Catherine E. (Herman) Coleman.
A graduate of Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., she was first employed by the state of Connecticut in assisting unemployed people to find new jobs. In 1994, she moved to Cooperstown and became employed by Bassett Healthcare, where she was involved with interviewing doctors for potential positions. She later moved to Guilderland and was employed by Audubon New York in Albany, first as an executive assistant and most recently as their webmaster.
A communicant of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, she recently moved back to Cooperstown to live with her parents when her health began to decline.
Linda is survived by her daughter, Casey Laufer, and her parents, Bill and Cathy Coleman of Cooperstown; her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Esther Coleman, of Fairfield, Conn.; three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Dykstra and her husband, Karl, and their children, Karl, William and Julie, of Cooperstown, Susanne Coleman of Cooperstown, and Mrs. Donna Clifford and her husband, Robert, and their sons, George, Coleman, and Francis Clifford of Bingham, Mass.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Immediately following the Mass, Linda's family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown for a time of refreshment and fellowship.
The Rite of Committal and interment will be private later that afternoon in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.

Adelbert Pultz
SAUGERTIES — Adelbert "Bert" Pultz, 91, of Saugerties, formerly of Arkville, died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at the Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck.
Bert was born Nov. 21, 1912, in Fleischmanns, to William and Berinece (Lasher) Pultz.
He married Grace Close on March 12, 1936, in Arena. She predeceased him on Jan. 23, 1998.
Bert worked for Catskill Mountain Dairies and later for Whites Dairy in Margaretville, retiring in 1977.
Bert played professional baseball for the Boston Braves in the Triple-A league. He also played in many town team games in the area.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Esther Wiedemann, of Saugerties; a son, James Pultz, of Moyock, N.C.; a grandson, Matt Wiedemann; two granddaughters, Heidi Helo and Asiha Pultz; great-grandchildren, Katie Helo, Michele Wiedemann, David Wiedemann and Davon Spencer and by nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Erika, who died on Dec. 11, 2002.
A 4 p.m. funeral service is planned for Saturday, June 26, at Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating. Friends may call one hour before the funeral.
Following cremation, a committal service will be later in the Clovesville Cemetery in Fleischmanns.
In memory of Adelbert Pultz, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marie T. Nelson
HARTWICK — Mrs. Marie Thornton Nelson, 91, of Hartwick, died late Wednesday evening, June 23, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Dick Bartenwerffer
DELHI — Richard W. "Dick" Bartenwerffer, 67, of Delhi, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Albany Veterans Administration Hospital.
One of seven children of the late Richard and Henrietta (Jenna) Bartenwerffer, he was born Nov. 15, 1936, in Teaneck, N.J., and married Marian S. Schumacher, Oct. 15, 1971, in Paterson, N.J. She died Oct. 4, 1994.
Dick was a Vietnam War veteran, serving in both the United States Navy and, subsequently, the U.S. Army.
An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a self-employed carpenter and Delhi resident for the past 24 years, having previously lived in Rochelle Park, N.J., where he was a member of American Legion Post 170.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda A. Simonson, of Haskell, N.J.; a son, John R. Svahra, of Paterson, N.J.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his companion, Ramona Woodruff, of Franklin.
Friends are invited to call 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where military honors will be given at 3 p.m. by Donald W. Gleason Post 190, American Legion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marion McKinney
ONEONTA — Marion E. McKinney, 85, passed away Friday, June 25, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a brief illness.
She was born March 25, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of Cleveland S. and Lena (Wood Proper) McKinney.
Marion was a graduate of Oneonta High School. She attended Hartwick College in Oneonta and business school.
She was employed at Bendix Corporation in Sidney for more than 40 years, retiring as an office manager with extensive responsibility for the business affairs of the Bendix plant.
Marion was member of the Emmons United Methodist Church, the Oneonta Garden Club and recently resigned her membership at the Oneonta Golf Club, where she was one of the oldest members. She was actively involved in a wide variety of community organizations in which she served as a faithful volunteer.
She was predeceased by her parents, a brother, C. Robert McKinney, and two sisters, Florence P. Jones and Anna P. Lake.
At Marion's request, there will be no calling hours.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 29, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.
The committal service will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson officiating.

Verna W. Bice
GRAHAM, N.C. — Mrs. Verna Werlau Bice, 80, of Graham, N.C., died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
She was born in Rockdale.
A homemaker, Verna was a member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, where she was a member of the church choir. An active volunteer, she worked faithfully with the Pennies for Hunger Campaign. She will be best remembered for her devotion to her family.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Bice; son, Alan (Sue) Bice, of the home; daughter, Ginnie (Keith) Hall of Mebane, N.C.; grandchildren, Lisa (Lee) Sandrige, Jay Camp, Sara Bice, Alison Bice and Lauren Bice; great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Will, Josh and Lavina; brother, Arn (Myrtie) Werlau, of Norwich; and sisters, Thelma (Lyle) Woodard of New Berlin and Theda (Bob) Conway, of Unadilla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Jon Werlau and Myrtle Quick Werlau.
Funeral services are at 2:30 p.m. today (Saturday, June 26) in the McClure Funeral Chapel in Graham with the Rev. John Johnson, Pastor of St. Paul Presbyterian Church, officiating. Friends may call from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., prior to the service.
