Richard M. Davis

ONEONTA — Richard M. Davis, 58, of Oneonta passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 5, 1946, in Bainbridge, the son of Richard Charles and Ruby Russell.

He married Doreen Votee on July 11, 1964, in Oneonta.

For a period of 27 years, Dick drove a truck for Riddell Brothers in Oneonta.

He enjoyed fishing with his daughters and granddaughter, as well as NASCAR racing, and was especially fond of the Earnhardt family. He also enjoyed motorcycling and tinkering with cars.

Dick will be sorely missed by his many friends and neighbors, for there is nothing that he wouldn't do to help them out.

He is survived by his wife, Doreen Davis, of Oneonta; his children, Brenda Davis, Tanya Davis and Cassandra Davis, all of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Matthew and Brianna Stoddart, and Richard Davis; his brothers and sisters, Alberta Wilson of Sidney Center, Betty Van Duesen of Gilbertsville, Clark Davis of Sidney, Doug Davis of New Jersey, and Jean Kadilac of Binghamton; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Nancy LeSuer.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 2, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Lyle Linder, pastor of the Franklin United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m. until service time, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Clarence Silvernell

UNADILLA — Clarence S. Silvernell passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Born on Feb. 13, 1926, to the late Floyd B. and Gertrude (Allison) Silvernell in Unadilla.

He attended Unadilla Central School and served in the United States Army during World War II with the 69th infantry. For several years he was a general contractor.

Mr. Silvernell was predeceased by his wife, Betty; his daughter, Holly Ann; and his brother, Donald.

Mr. Silvernell is survived by his daughter, Robin Gilligan of Burnt Hills; his son, Jim Silvernell of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren; his sister, Vera Marzulla of Unadilla; and longtime friend, Vicki Finch of Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

Interment will take place at a later date in Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements are with the Joyce Funeral Home, Inc., Unadilla.

Annie Ludington

EDMESTON — A memorial service for Annie Whitaker Ludington will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating. Interment will be at Edmeston Union Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Sherwood's, Annie's previous home.

Annie is survived by her husband, Ralph E. Ludington; her special nephews and their spouses, James Turner, and Robin and Hilda Turner; her sister, Wanita Lewis and her husband, Don; her sisters, Helen Greene and Mildred (Mimi) Lehman; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to either the Edmeston United Methodist Church or the Edmeston Emergency Squad.

Janice C. Riddell

COLLIERSVILLE — Contributions may be made in memory of Janice C. Riddell, 74, who passed away June 20, 2004, in loving memory of her son, Bobby Riddell, to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The Upstate New York/Vermont Chapter, 6 Automation Lane, Albany, NY 12205.

Richard LaBarre

CHERRY VALLEY — Richard VanMeter LaBarre of Salt Springville Road, Cherry Valley, passed away peacefully at his home with loved ones at his side on June 29, 2004, after a long illness.

Richard was born in Uniontown, Pa., on May 17, 1920, the son of Artemisia VanMeter Hannah and Isaac Weston LaBarre.

He attended Uniontown High School and graduated with honors in 1938. He was awarded several scholarships, including the William Coren Memorial Scholarship and the Pittsburgh Alumni Association scholarship to attend Princeton University.

He married his high school sweetheart, Vera Montagna, on Dec. 28, 1940.

After graduating from Princeton in 1942, he began his fellowship at Princeton Graduate School.

He was drafted into the United States Army and served at the Fort Dix Induction Center. After serving, he moved to New York City, where he was employed by Hazard Advertising Company as a copywriter and later executive vice president. Richard left advertising in 1970 to explore new horizons. He worked as a freelance writer, general contractor, fine cabinetmaker and eventually found his gift and love in teaching.

Richard received a master's degree in special education at Southern Connecticut College in the early 1980s, at which time he was employed as the woodworking teacher at Green Chimneys School in Brewster, a residential school and social services agency for troubled youth. He retired with Vera in 1986 and moved from Ossining to Cherry Valley.

Richard was predeceased by his wife, Vera LaBarre, in December 2002, and all of his siblings.

He is survived by his son, Charles LaBarre, and his wife, Doris Weber of Woodstock; his daughter, Frances LaBarre, and her husband, Colin Greer, and their children, Simon, Olivia and Lucy, of New York City; his daughter, Cate LaBarre, her partner Win McIntyre, her son Nick Jordan and his father Paul Jordan of Cherry Valley. Also surviving is his niece, Christina LaBarre and her husband, Mark Takefman of Cooperstown, niece Adele LaBarre and nephew, Ken LaBarre of NYC, and nephew, Paul LaBarre of Albuquerque, N.M.; sisters-in-law, Dina LaBarre of W. Caldwell, N.J., and Lil Bias of Charleston, W.Va.; and brother-in-law, Amelio Montagna and his wife, Eunice of Whispering Pines, N.C. Special friends also survive, Carlos and Ellen Pina of Roseboom, Ruth Snyder of Cherry Valley, Kandy Festa Lewis of South Valley, Judy Johnstone of Canajoharie, Diane McGrath of Cherry Valley, Leila and Philip Durkin of Cherry Valley; and extended family and friends too numerous to mention.

In lieu of flowers the family welcomes a gift in his memory to: Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 327 W. Main Street No. 3, Cobleskill, NY 12043, in recognition of their tireless and loving service to our family; Green Chimneys School, 400 Doansburg Road, Brewster, NY 10509; or Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, Cherry Valley, NY 13320.

The family plans a remembrance at a later date.

Arrangements are entrusted to Ottman Funeral Home.

Robert B. Weeks

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Robert B. Weeks, 69, of Cherry Valley passed away June 30, 2004, at his home.

He was born in Cooperstown on April 29, 1935, the son of Mary (MacRorie) Weeks.

On Oct. 24, 1954, he married Dolores Prain in the Methodist Church, Cherry Valley, she survives.

Mr. Weeks farmed in Roseboom from 1955-1970. He was the owner of Bob's Corner Store, Roseboom, from September 1970 until his retirement Dec. 30, 1994.

He was a member of the Cherry Valley Methodist Church and the Canajoharie Country Club. His grandchildren, golf and his garden were his life.

Survivors besides his wife, Dolores Weeks, of Cherry Valley include a son, Thomas J. Weeks and his wife, Charlene of Roseboom; a daughter, Joni Doss and her husband, Daniel of Taylor, Texas; grandchildren, Bobbie Ann, Casie, Sophia and Tommy; great-grandchildren, Dustin, David, Makayla, Morgan and Mackenzie; a brother, Larry Weeks of Missoula, Mont.; his best friend, Clayton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

There will be public calling hours from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 2, 2004, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Funeral services and burial in Roseboom Cemetery will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Weeks' memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Gertrude Hewlett

OTEGO — Gertrude Sherow Hewlett, 75, of Otego died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 14, 1929, in Poughkeepsie, and relocated to Otego in 1975. She was the daughter of the late Cecil D. and Olive (Briggs) Sherow.

Gertrude married Robert Hewlett, who survives her, in April 1950.

Before retirement she worked at the Unatego High School cafeteria. She was a longtime active member of the Otego Presbyterian Church and has now joined our Lord in heaven.

Gertrude is survived by her six children and their spouses, William and Ellen Hewlett of Otego, Richard and Kathy Hewlett of Otego, Linda and Larry Gover of Gilbertsville, April and Bud Hubbard of Pleasant Valley, Marcia and James Mumford of Mount Vision, and Lisa and Tom Hall of Otego; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by five sisters, Joan Smith of Pleasant Valley, Carol Hawley of Hadley, Dorothy Traver of Pleasant Valley, Jean Gerhards of Pine Plains, and Eleanor Pink of Pleasant Valley.

She was predeceased by one brother, Cecil Douglas Sherow.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 2, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. in the Otego Presbyterian Church, River Street, Otego, with the Rev. Ned Lintern officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Donations should be made to the Otego Fire/Rescue Squad or to the Otego Presbyterian Church, River Street, Otego, NY 13825.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

Ronald E. Richards

ONEONTA — Ronald E. Richards, 74, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 1, 1930, in Oneonta, the son of Edward and Iva (Eldred) Richards.

Ron was a graduate of Oneonta High School and a lifelong area resident. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean Conflict. Ron was a member of the Oneonta American Legion Post 259.

He is survived by his niece, Mary Lou (Ritchko) Bevins and her husband, Frank of Oneonta; a great-nephew, Chad Ritchko; and several other nieces and nephews also survive him.

A son, Jeffery Richards, as well as two brothers, Edward J. Richards and the Rev. Robert Richards predeceased Ron. A sister, Beverly Ritchko also predeceased him.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. James Wheeler, itinerant minister, New York District Assembly of God Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Robert B. Weeks

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Robert B. Weeks, 69, of Cherry Valley passed away June 30, 2004, at his home.

Julia Allidi

ONEONTA — Julia Allidi, 93, of Oneonta, passed away on Friday, July 2, 2004, at her residence.

She was born March 5, 1911, in New York City, the daughter of John and Fannie (Mazzochi) Bertuzzi. She was married to Louis Allidi in New York City and he predeceased her in 1973.

As well as being a homemaker, Julia was a well-known area artist specializing in paintings of old Oneonta and the D&H Railroad.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, John S. and Grace Allidi, of Oneonta, and Paul and Susan Allidi of Liverpool; her two granddaughters, Gretchen and Gabriela Allidi, of Liverpool; a brother, Louis Bertuzzi, of Oneonta, and a sister, Mary Chapadeau, of Little Falls, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Samuel Bertuzzi, of Oneonta, and a sister, Rose Maney, of Utica.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School or the Otsego County SPCA.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John Andreassen

DAVENPORT — John M. Andreassen, 66, of Davenport, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Oct. 4, 1937, in Brooklyn, the son of Arne and Anna (Sorensen) Andreassen.

He married Jean Bogert Andreassen Sept. 30, 1956, in Jeffersonville. She survives as do a son and daughter-in-law, Evan and Linda Andreassen, of Oneonta; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Randy Mowers, of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Kristen, Jeffrey and Kayla; a sister, Lila Morelli, of Scotia; his mother-in-law, Lillian Bogert, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Andreassen retired from construction work in New York City as a dock builder with Local 1456. He loved the Catskills and was involved locally in the Davenport United Methodist Church. He served on the Ad Council and as a trustee, participated in the Davenport Historical Society. He was a member of the Davenport Senior Citizens and drove for more than five years for Meals On Wheels.

A great outdoorsman, he held life membership in the NRA and enjoyed outdoor sports, hunting and fishing. A skilled craftsman, John built his home.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 4, at the Davenport United Methodist Church, Davenport, with the Rev. Nola Anderson officiating.

Burial will follow the service in Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Davenport United Methodist Church, Davenport.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

C. Merton Hebbard

FRANKLIN — C. Merton Hebbard, 85, of Franklin, passed away on Thursday, July 1, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home.

He was born on May 10, 1919, in Davenport, the son of Clarence and Adeline (Northrup) Hebbard.

He married June Marie Trudell on Dec. 21, 1939, in Cooperstown, and she predeceased him on Dec. 21, 1997.

Mert was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army in Italy.

He worked for many years as a truck driver with Matteson Feed in Franklin. Prior to that he was a carpenter and a farmer. After his retirement, he shuttled cars for Royal Chrysler and several other local car agencies.

He was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church, and American Legion Post 1645, Franklin.

Mert was an antique enthusiast and participated in many local flea markets and auctions.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Rodney (Sally L.) Hebbard, of Franklin, Gerald (Jane) Hebbard, of Franklin, Donald (Louise) Hebbard, of Franklin, and Randolf (Han-Ki) Hebbard, of Binghamton; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Chamberlain, of Oneonta, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin. The family will be in attendance.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 7, at 11 a.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Franklin United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
