Francis W. Faigle

BAINBRIDGE — Francis Wellington Faigle, 87, of Bainbridge, died Friday morning, July 2, 2004, at his residence in Bainbridge.

He was born on Oct. 11, 1916, in Scott Center, Pa., the son of William and Beulah (Decker) Faigle.

Francis graduated from Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Pa.

On Oct. 23, 1954, he married Agnes Menhennett in Red Bank, at the home of her brother.

After being raised on the family farm, Francis worked construction in Pennsylvania and at Endicott Johnson Shoe Company from 1946-1951. In 1951, Francis entered a partnership with his father operating the Harmonie Farm in Bainbridge until the farm was sold in 1965. He worked briefly at the Barrel Company in Sanitaria Springs and drove a truck during construction of the Downsville reservoir.

Francis was employed at the Borden chemical factory in Bainbridge until he retired in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Agnes, and daughter, Darleen Faigle, of Bainbridge; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Rosalie of Chittenango; two grandchildren, Anna Manaloto of Connecticut and Eric Faigle of Chittenango; a sister, Alma Winkler of Binghamton; a sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Maylan Keenan of Sidney, a sister-in-law, Francis Faigle of Wells Bridge and several nephews and nieces and cousins.

He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Wilford and LaMont Faigle, and a sister, Velma Gassler.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 58 West Main St., Bainbridge.

Funeral services will follow at the Dorothy Memorial Home in Bainbridge with Judy Travis officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Memorial gifts may be made in his name to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Nick E. Ferrentelli and Arthur N. Jones and the Dorothy Memorial Home of Afton and Bainbridge.

Blanche T. Roberts

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Blanche Todd Roberts, 89, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Feb. 11, 1915, in Dolgeville, the daughter of Edward and Charlotte (Gladd) Todd. On June 22, 1941, she married Kermit M. Roberts in Fairfield. He predeceased her in 1976.

She was a resident of Middleville for 27 years and Cherry Valley for 26 years.

Blanche was a foster parent and homemaker.

She was a member of the West Canada Creek Grange, Herkimer County Pomona Grange, New York State Grange, National Grange, Cherry Valley Rebekah Lodge, Grace Episcopal Church and a past member of the Middleville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons, Edward and his wife, Joyce, Roberts of Syracuse, Richard and his wife, Traci, Roberts of Ft. Indiantown Gap, Pa.; two daughters, Mary Slazinski and her husband, Richard, Michael of New Willmington, Pa., Ruth Roberts of Cherry Valley; grandchildren, Cheryl and husband, Ron, Fassett of North Syracuse, Erick and wife, Cathy, Slazinski of Battleground, Ill., Kelly and husband, Robert, Dant of Laurel, Md., Christopher and Mark Slazinski, of New Willmington, Pa., Josh, Richie Jr. and Cheyenne Roberts, all of Ft. Indiantown Gap, Pa., great-grandchildren, Caleb, Mackenzie, Brendan, Lauryn and Ross.

She was predeceased by brothers, Vann Todd, Eugene Todd, and infant granddaughters, Susanne and Michelle Slazinski.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at the funeral home, with a Rebekah Service at 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday July 8, at the Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley with the Rev. Persis Williams officiating.

Burial will follow in Middleville.

Contributions in Blanche's memory may be made to the Grace Church, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

I. Jack Bottita

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. I. Jack Bottita, 91, died early Monday morning, July 5, 2004, at The Meadows.

He was born on May 3, 1913, in Pittston, Pa., a son of Stefano and Antonia (Chiarenza) Bottita.

Raised in Buffalo, Jack moved to Cooperstown in the 1930s. In January of 1943, he entered the United States Army and served his country during World War II in the 392nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. He received his Honorable Discharge on Feb. 19, 1946.

A true entrepreneur, he owned and operated several small businesses in Cooperstown, including a soda fountain and ice cream shop located on Chestnut Street across from the old high school, a garage on Eagle Street where he repaired and serviced automobiles, and a Pure Oil gas station. He was best known, though, for selling used cars from his establishment on upper Chestnut Street.

Jack was a member of the former Susquehanna Tribe 575, Improved Order of the Red Men, in Cooperstown.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Jodi Bottita of Hartwick; three grandchildren, Jack Bottita Jr., Christopher Ray, and his fiance, Patricia, and their son, Elijah, and Roxanne Ray; two sisters, Concetta and Mary; one brother, George; one nephew, Steven; one niece, Candy, and a special friend, Dorothy Edwards, of The Meadows.

He was predeceased by his wife, Doris M. (Pitts) Bottita, who died on July 24, 1979.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, in the Middlefield Cemetery, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor of the Middlefield Baptist Church, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to The Meadows Activities Fund, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth, Funeral Directors, Cooperstown.

JoAnn L. Glackin

DELHI — JoAnn L. Glackin, 75, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Delaware County Countryside Care in Delhi of complications from Parkinson's.

She was born the only child of Warren, Pennsylvania's first mayor, Arthur and Frances (Tibbits) Langdon.

JoAnn married Franklin Pennel Glackin Jr. on June 24, 1950.

A Delhi resident for three years, she previously lived 10 years in Austin, Texas, and 20 years in Jamestown, as well as Winter Park, Fla. While in Texas she served the Texas Department on Aging.

She mostly enjoyed life in and around the water. Her favorite times were spent swimming and boating at her parents' cottage on Lake Chautauqua in New York state and later in life at New Smryna Beach in Florida.

She was involved in the library at the elementary school attended by her children and in fund-raising for an Olympic-size pool in Winter Park, Fla. JoAnn was also an avid animal and bird lover who enjoyed reading mystery books and writing prose.

JoAnn attended St. John's Episcopal Church in Delhi and was a member of the Senior Texans Employment Program.

She loved and was very proud of her family, David Glackin of California, Gayle Glackin Nance of Florida and Arthur Glackin of California.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today, July 6, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Paul Hartt officiating.

Burial will be Wednesday, July 7, in Oakland Cemetery, Warren, Pa.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice of the Greater Catskill Area or St. John's Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Mildred Keator

ONEONTA — Mildred Keator, 74, of Oneonta died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

She was born March 28, 1930, in South Kortright, the daughter of Howard and Frances Carr.

Mildred was a member of the Oneonta VFW Women's Auxiliary. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, who will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her 10 children and their spouses, Deb Burton of Worcester, Robert and Linda Keator of Idaho, Betty and Allen Wamsley of Davenport, Joan Keator of Oneonta, Angevine and Judy Keator of Maryland, Roberta Briggs of East Worcester and her friend, Frog, David Keator of Indiana, Rebecca and Leland March of Oneonta, Tom Keator of Indiana and Lisa and Russell Keever of Worcester; 23 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mildred was predeceased by an infant son, Ronald Keator; her parents, Howard and Frances Carr; her sister, Jean Baker, and her son-in-law, Alfred Burton.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at the home of Mildred's daughter, Deb Burton, on Brighton Road in Worcester.

A private graveside memorial service will be held at the convenience of Mildred's family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Ambulance Fund, Main Street, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert Quackenbush

FREEHOLD — Robert H. Quackenbush, 58, of Freehold, passed away at the Albany Medical Center, on Friday, July 2, 2004.

He was born in Cobleskill on Dec. 29, 1945, son of the late William A. and Grace (Doley) Quackenbush.

He was a foreman for the town of Greenville Highway Department before ill health forced an early retirement. Bob enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed traveling around the countryside and stopping at the various garage sales.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie (Crandall) Quackenbush; a daughter, Melissa Quackenbush and grandson, David Gabrielle; also several brothers and sisters, Lillian Holbrook, Adelbert Quackenbush, Lyn Quackenbush, Donald Quackenbush, Bonnie Vandenberg, Virginia Everleth, EllaMae Twoney, Emma Jean Eichler and MaryJo Hynes, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Quackenbush, and a sister, Wilene Quackenbush.

Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR81, Greenville.

According to Robert's wishes, cremation was at the Albany Rural Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Greenville Rescue Squad.

Florence Lavrinos

COOPERSTOWN — Florence Steele Lavrinos, 90, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born March 8, 1914, in Albany, the daughter of Larenzo and Katherine (Snyder) Steele.

She was married to Paul Lavrinos. He predeceased her in 1992.

Survivors include good friends, James and Harriette Weeks of Springfield Center; a cousin, Harriette Real of San Jose, Calif., and several second cousins.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, July 6, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with the Rev. Terence Brant officiating.

Burial will follow in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Martha Dyckman

SPRINGFIELD — Martha Frances Dyckman, 89, passed away Friday, July 2, 2004, at the Meadows.

She was born in Peekskill on June 3, 1915, the daughter of William Henry and Martha (Lent) Dyckman Sr.

She attended Henry Hudson High School. She was a domestic and worked as an aide for the Springfield Rest Home in Springfield.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Roger (Sarah) Sheckells of Springfield and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

William Ackerson

LANCASTER, Pa. — William D. Ackerson, 78, of Homestead Village (Retirement Home), Lancaster, Pa., died Saturday, June 26, 2004, at home.

Born in Hancock, he was the son of the late Garret and Mae Wormuth Ackerson.

He was married 56 years in October to Alice Hempstead Ackerson.

William was a retired social studies teacher and guidance counselor from Franklin Central School. He previously taught in the Windsor, Hancock and Oneonta school districts.

A United States Army veteran of World War II, he served as a staff sergeant on a bomber crew in the 8th Air Force. Shot down during his mission in 1944, he was a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft. 4 and marched in the "Black March Across Germany" in the winter of 1945. He was awarded the Air Medal, a Purple Heart and the Prisoner of War Medal. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Hartwick College in Oneonta and master's degrees from Syracuse University and the State University College at Oneonta.

In Lancaster, William was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he was a Eucharist minister. He also served as a lay assistant at St. James' Episcopal Church, Oneonta, for three-and-a-half years. During this time he was the chaplain at Fox Hospital Nursing Home where he taught a Bible study class.

Active in Boy Scouts of America for 31 years, he served on the executive board of the Otschodela Council, Oneonta, and Penn Dutch Council, Lancaster, Pa. He was a former Scoutmaster of Troop 30, Oneonta, and former Wood Badge counselor. He was on the staff of World Jamboree Number 13 in Japan and also the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Fort AP Hill, Va. He was also at one time on the staffs of the Otshodela Council and Crumhorn Mountain Boy Scout Camp in Milford.

Among his Boy Scouting awards, he received the Silver Beaver, St. George Medal, James E. West Fellow and Vigil Member Order of the Arrow.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, G. Scott of North Syracuse and William D. Ackerson of Williamstown, Mass.; a daughter, Mary E. Smith of Lancaster, Pa.; his brother, Allan Ackerson of Middletown; grandsons, Eric C. and Joel P. Ackerson and Daniel Smith; granddaughter, Laura Smith, and great-granddaughter, Jala K. Ackerson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 8, at Bashore Scout Reservation, 160 Moonshine Rd., Jonestown, Pa.

Interment will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Hancock Cemetery, Hancock. Relatives and friends are invited to attend either service.

Kindly omit flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 321 West Chestnut St., Lancaster, PA 17603, or the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, Boy Scouts of America, 630 Janet Ave., Lancaster, PA 17601.

James H. Armlin

CHARLOTTE, N. C. — James H. Armlin Jr., 54, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Breakabeen, died suddenly on Saturday, July 3, 2004, as the result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born Jan. 27, 1950, on Armlin Hill, he was the son of the late James and Nellie (Christian) Armlin Sr. He grew up in Middeburgh and attended Middleburgh High School. He also attended the auto mechanics certificate course at the State University of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

He lived in Breakabeen with his family until 1990, then divorced, relocating to Charlotte. He worked as a laborer, operator and field superintendent in heavy-highway construction throughout his life. He worked for Sweet Associates, Lancaster Development and the last few years with M.D. White in North Carolina. While working in New York, he was involved in various projects such as the construction of I-88 and Route 30, including the new bridges.

James was an active church member while living in New York, with the Valley Bible Baptist Church, and continued to be active in the Huntersville Baptist Church in Huntersville, N.C.

Survivors include his wife Sue (Johnson) Armlin, who he married Sept. 22, 2001; a stepson, Antonio Johnson of Charlotte; his former wife Debra (Keyser) Armlin and their five children, James Armlin of Charlotte, Bobbejo Armlin of Middleburgh, Angela Armlin of Charlotte, Justin Armlin of Middleburgh and Carrie Armlin of Middleburgh; a stepgrandson, Raymund Enriquez of Charlotte; granddaughter, Cheyenne Haemmerle of Middleburgh; three sisters, Joy Haviland of Prescott, Ariz., Sonya Roland of Middleburgh and Brenda Armlin of Middleburgh, and many nieces and nephews.

James was predeceased by an infant daughter, Tonya, in 1973 and also by a sister, Catherine Reinheimer, in 2000.

Graveside services will be held later for relatives and friends at the Armlin Hill Family Cemetery on Armlin Hill Road.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice in loving memory of James H. Armlin Jr.

Richard A. Melloy

NORWICH — Richard A. Melloy Sr., 84, of Miller Street, Norwich, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 6, 2004, at the New York State Veterans Home of Oxford.

Born in Bethlehem, Pa., on April 19, 1920, Dick was the son of Gilbert and Carrie (Heist) Melloy. In September of 1942, he married Janet Williamson Melloy, who passed away Feb. 25, 2001.

Dick grew up in Bethlehem and was a graduate of the Liberty High School in the Class of 1940. He worked for a period of time for the Bethlehem Steel Company as a chemical analyst, then entered the United States Navy in 1942. While stationed in Bethesda Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., he studied at Moravian College and received his bachelor's degree in 1945. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in January of 1946, Dick began his own analytical lab in Bethlehem, Pa. He worked there until 1953 when he moved his family to Norwich and gained employment in the research and development areas of the Sheffield Chemical Company. In 1971, Dick was recruited by Deltown Foods of Yonkers to develop and operate Deltown Chemurgic. He served as vice president of Pharmaceutical products until he retired and began his own consulting business, Bioramar Associates, which was a food technology business.

Dick enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid gardener who shared vegetables with many of his neighbors and friends.

Dick is survived by his daughter, Linda B. Melloy of New York City and his son, Richard A. Melloy Jr., of Norwich; his grandson, Richard A. Melloy III of Danvers, Mass. and his nieces and nephews, Robert Sterling and wife Martha, Susan Browne and husband Bruce and Carrie and John Molnar.

Besides his wife, Janet, Dick was predeceased by his sisters, Catherine Sterling and Patsy Molnar.

Graveside services for Dick will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, from the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich. Robert Blood, Lay Reader of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich, will officiate. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.

Arrangements are by the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich.
