Claude S. Cook

UNADILLA — Claude S. Cook, 81, of Unadilla passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Otego, the son of Marvin and Viola (Constable) Cook.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army.

Claude was married to Edna Heerwagen on April 3, 1947, in Unadilla. Mrs. Cook predeceased him on May 2, 2001.

He was a self-employed heavy equipment operator and a former Unadilla Town Highway Superintendent and life member of the NRA.

Claude is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Bernard MacDonald of Unadilla; his sister-in-law, Shirley Goebeler of Unadilla; and his brother-in-law, Richard Davis of Center Valley, Pa.; also several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy Davis, Barbara and Roberta Goebeler; his brothers, Robert and Charles Goebeler.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Norman Tiffany, pastor of the Sand Hill Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla.

Frances Rathbone

PRATTSVILLE — Frances Rathbone, 79, of Prattsville died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Margaretville Hospital, Margaretville.

Born on Dec. 18, 1924, in North Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Hilton and Mabel Deyo Smith.

She was married to the late Oliver Rathbone; and was predeceased by her sons, Dean and Donald Rathbone; and a nephew, Sid Vining.

Mrs. Rathbone loved her family, and was an avid deer hunter and sportswoman, playing softball, bowling and golfing. She loved her many friends that she played with at the Windham Golf Course.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy Wyckoff of Gilboa; and a son, Jack Rathbone; several grandchildren, Debbie Rathbone, Rachel Rathbone, Scott Mattice, Patrick Mattice, John Wyckoff, Marilyn Wyckoff; great-grandchildren, Gregg Mattice, Geoff Mattice; niece and nephews, Dorothy Every, Gene Every and Barry Every.

She was a plant worker, employed by Greene Delaware Packing, Prattsville.

Friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main Street, Windham.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham, with the service conducted by Pastor Christina of the Gilboa Methodist Church. Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Russell W. Erwood

NEW LISBON — Russell William Erwood, 91, of New Lisbon, and formerly of Staten Island, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after being taken ill at his home in New Lisbon.

He was born in Staten Island on Aug. 20, 1912, the son of Harold and Anna K. (Nielsen) Erwood.

He married Alice Holton Jan. 23, 1938, in Staten Island.

He was a dock building engineer with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad until his retirement.

He was an avid outdoorsman, particularly enjoying hunting, fishing and gardening and also bowling. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Union, National Rifle Association, and in his younger years was interested in homing pigeons and was active with the Little League projects.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, of New Lisbon; three sons, Keith Russell Erwood of Oneonta, Kenneth Roy Erwood of Albuquerque, N.M., Harold John Erwood of Staten Island; a brother, Ralph Erwood of Colorado. He was blessed with six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his seven brothers and sisters, who were Helen Zito, Harold Erwood, Gladys Boardman, Ruth Mancini, Breita Menyhart, William Erwood and Donald Erwood.

Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish are asked to make donations to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Jack W. Harper

CHERRY VALLEY — Jack Wesley Harper, 44, a lifelong resident of Cherry Valley, passed away Friday, July 9, 2004, at home after a lengthy illness.

He lived life to its fullest and was an avid motorcyclist his whole life.

He was born April 24, 1960, in Little Falls, the son of James E. and Elizabeth J. (Ripple) Harper.

He was presently employed by the New York State Thruway Authority, and worked at Lock No. 15 on the canal system. He was previously employed for many years as a motorcycle mechanic at Van's Harley Davidson in Gloversville, and other motorcycle dealers throughout the area.

Jack leaves his longtime companion, Nancy Putnam, of Cherry Valley; and his children, Noel, Allison and Jackson of Ames; a sister, Beth Zimple of Richfield Springs; two brothers, James E. Harper Jr., of East Springfield, and Richard F. Harper of Parker, Colo. and their families. Jack was formerly married to Joanne Webb, formerly of Cherry Valley, now residing in Ames; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by both his mother and father.

There will be no public funeral or calling hours.

Contributions in Jack's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Evelyn A. Roberts

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. — Burial service for Evelyn A. (Sullivan) Roberts, who died Feb. 3, 2004, in Havre de Grace, Md., will be held Saturday, July 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Mount Vision Cemetery, Mount Vision.

Mrs. Roberts was the daughter of (deceased) Bert and Marie Sullivan of Mount Vision, and spent her youth in the Mount Vision area, graduating from Laurens School in 1944.

Evelyn was instrumental for continuing The Sullivan Family Reunion for so many years, and it was her wish to be buried the same weekend as the Annual Reunion.

Robert W. Gill

MILLBROOK — Robert W. Gill, 76, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2004, after a short illness.

He was born Sept. 27, 1927, in Gloversville, the son of Joseph and Martha (Blunck) Gill.

Robert served in the United States Navy Seabees. He was an Oneonta fireman from 1953 to 1983. He also was the caretaker for the Glenwood Cemetery from 1989 to 2002. Robert was a 50-year area resident.

He was a member of the Oneonta VFW and American Legion Posts, the Oneonta Elks Club, the Otsego County Road, Runners Club and the St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta.

Robert is survived by two daughters, Nancy and her husband, Pasquale Scisci of Niskayuna, and Carol and her husband, Clark Walker of Millbrook; a son, Robert J. Gill of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Genna and John Scisci of Niskayuna; a brother, James Gill of East Meredith; a niece, Patricia Pelligra of West Laurens; two nephews, Michael Gill of Kingston, and Ben Carey of Davenport; and his former wife, Dorothy Gill.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Gill.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 16, 2004, at the St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Kenneth Hunter officiating. Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery with full military honors presented by the Oneonta VFW and American Legion Posts.

Calling hours will be Thursday, July 15, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Robert to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220. Memorial envelopes will be present at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Verna G. Richards

UNADILLA — Verna G. Richards, 84, of Unadilla has gone home to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, July 11, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 13, 1919, in Brant Lake, the daughter of Samuel and Jane Ann (Frazier) Girard.

She was married to Warren W. Richards on Nov. 7, 1941, in Oneonta.

Verna was a graduate of Haricon High School in Brant Lake and graduated from Albany Business College.

She has been a resident of Unadilla since 1955, was a former employee of Bendix Corp. in Sidney and Hotaling Auto Sales of Sidney.

She served as former chairperson of the Unadilla Democratic Party, and was a former head of St. Matthew's Church Altar Guild. She was an avid gardener and reader, and enjoyed creating and selling crafts.

Verna is survived by her husband, Warren W. Richards, of Unadilla; her daughters and sons-in-law, Daughn and Dennis Darlin of Wells Bridge, Susan Kuss of Saratoga Springs, Peggy and Lynn Lisenby of San Antonio, Texas, Gloria Richards of Ithaca, Robin and David Lewis of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Mary-Lynn and Scott Henchey of Unadilla; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Raymond and Samuel Girard; and her son-in-law, Joseph Kuss.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Joel T. Grigg, rector, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, Tuesday, July 13, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or the Wells Bridge Fire Department First Responders.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Catherine P. Brush

THE VILLAGES, Fla. — Mrs. Catherine P. Brush, 96, of The Villages, Fla., passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the home she shared with her daughter, in The Villages.

She was born Feb. 22, 1908, in Fayetteville, to Nicholas and Cornelia Pendergast, and was a graduate of Our Lady of Victory in Plattsburgh.

In 1928, she married Charles Easley, who preceded her in death, and in 1952, she married Percy Brush, who also preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker, was of the Catholic faith, and moved to The Villages in 1997, from Oneonta.

She is survived by her daughters, Dolores E. Collins of Ithaca, Virginia Lorraine Patton of Oneonta, Gwendolyn E. Nichols and Charla E. Barber, both of The Villages; sister, Mary Greene of Syracuse; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at the Forest Hill Cemetery Chapel in New Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her memory to The Villages Hospice House, 601 Casa Bella, The Villages, FL 32162, would be appreciated.

James H. Armlin

MIDDLEBURGH — A graveside service for James H. Armlin Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., who died Saturday, July 3, 2004, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Armlin Hill Cemetery, off Armlin Hill Road in Middleburgh.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Thomas O’Hara

PRATTSVILLE — Thomas O’Hara, 76, of Prattsville died on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Born on March 16, 1928, in Steubenville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Albert and Clara (Kipp) O’Hara.

Mr. O’Hara married Betty Y. Hubbard, on June 6, 1948.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Michael O’Hara, Mary O’Hara, Ann O’Hara Gurecki, Erin O’Hara Meyer; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a cousin, Olive Cronk Van Aken; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Lou O’Hara Wade and Christine O’Hara Daly.

He was the proprietor of O’Hara’s Trading Post, a family owned business in operation for more than 50 years in Prattsville.

Mr. O’Hara was a member of the Prattsville Fire Company, Virgil E. Deyo American Legion Post in Prattsville and the Scotch Valley Ski Patrol.

Visitation will be held at the Decker Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 15.

A mass of the Resurrection will be held at noon on Friday, July 16, at St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, Grand Gorge.

Private cremation will follow at the Albany Rural Crematory in Menands.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Prattsville Rescue Squad, American Heart Association, American Lung Association or the Virgil E. Deyo American Legion Post.

Arrangements are with Decker Funeral Home 134 Main St., Windham.

Robert Zimmerman

DAVENPORT — Robert A. Zimmerman, 66, of Davenport passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 12, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born in Harpersfield on June 16, 1938, the son of Charles and Ethel (Clum) Zimmerman.

Bob was a self-employed plumber and electrician. He enjoyed living life to the fullest, his family, racing, motorcycling and Florida.

He married Flora M. Jones on April 28, 1963. She survives him along with his son, Robert Jr. and wife, Tammy; two daughters, Brenda and husband, Thomas Hunt, and Michelle and her husband, Larry Schmiedel; grandchildren, Thomas Jr. and Darren Hunt, Michael and Jennifer Zimmerman, Crystle and Brandon Schmiedel; a brother, Charles Zimmerman Jr. and friend Joyce; a sister, Doris, and husband, Fred Jeffers, and his mother-in-law, Mary Jones.

Bob was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Ralph.

It was his request that his remains be given to the Albany Medical College with hope that some knowledge from his donation might help others.

Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of life to honor Bob from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, at the Davenport Fire Department.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the East Worcester United Methodist Church, PO Box 665, East Worcester, NY 12064.

Gary Horth

EAST WORCESTER — Gary Horth, 53, of East Worcester, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 8, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 18, 1951, in Oneonta, the son of Kenneth W. and Natalie (Finch) Horth.

He married Laura A. Crandall on July 4, 1998, in Oneonta.

Gary was a graduate of Oneonta High School and a lifelong area resident. He was employed by Endwell Rug Company of Oneonta and was a carpet installer. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 259, Oneonta, as well as the Sixth Ward Athletic Club. Gary was also a member of the B.P.O.E. Moose Lodge in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Laura A. Horth, and his stepdaughter, Jennica Wilsey of Maryland; his mother, Natalie Horth of Oneonta; his brother, Vaughn Horth of Oneonta; his sister, Karen Beadle of Venice, Fla.; his brother, Keith Horth and his wife, Patty, of Loveland, Ohio; his brother, Emerson Horth and his wife, Valerie, of Mt. Vision; his uncle, Willis Horth and his wife, Helen, of Laurens; and his uncle, Jessie Horth of Oneonta. Cheyenne Horth, his special niece, also survives him along with many other nieces and nephews.

His father, Kenneth W. Horth, and his sister-in-law, Katherine Horth, predeceased Gary.

Funeral services for Gary Horth will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 15, at the Bookhout Funeral 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Richard Breuninger, United Methodist Clergy, officiating.

Burial and committal services will be held in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bookhout Funeral Home. The family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Irene Dailey Fox

ONEONTA — Irene Dailey Fox, 82, formerly of Oneonta, died June 12, 2004, at her home in Pinehurst, N.C.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard O. Fox; a son, Richard Willis Fox, wife Kathleen O’Connell of Chapel Hill; a daughter, Carol L. Fox of Doylestown, Pa.; a brother, Willis C. Dailey of Oneonta; a sister, Shirley Baker of Oneonta; and two grandchildren.

A sister, Emogene Dailey, preceded her in death.

A committal service for Irene will take place at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 15, in the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating.

Local arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.
