Irene M. Wright

ONEONTA — Irene M. Wright, of Oneonta, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at her home.

She was born Feb. 26, 1916, in Oneonta, the daughter of Edwin H. and Luella A. (DeLaney) Smith.

She married Gerald S. Wright on Oct. 24, 1938, in Watertown. They were married 55 years. Mr. Wright passed away on Nov. 27, 1993.

Irene had been a member of the Main Street Baptist Church since 1931. She had also been a Girl Scout leader and was an election inspector for the First Ward for many years. She was a charter member of the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society and for years, participated in the society’s annual Christmas Bird Count.

Irene was a homemaker for her family at their home on Sand Street for nearly 65 years.

Her children feel she was the best mom in the world. She devoted her life to their nurture, education, growth and well being. She made their house a home and will be greatly missed by them.

She is survived by a son, Wayne, and a daughter, Marilyn, both of Oneonta; and five nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Clyde Smith of Goodyear Lake.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with Pastor Ken Zulkosky officiating.

Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Calling hours win be offered at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the Catskill Center for Independence, P.O. Box 1247, Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Irene M. Wright.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Verna G. Richards

UNADILLA — Verna G. Richards, 84, of Unadilla, has gone home to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, July 11, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 13, 1919, in Brant Lake, the daughter of Samuel and Jane Ann (Frazier) Girard.

She was married to Warren W. Richards on Nov. 7, 1941, in Oneonta.

Verna was a graduate of Haricon High School in Brant Lake and graduated from Albany Business College.

She had been a resident of Unadilla since 1955 and was a former employee of Bendix Corporation in Sidney and Hotaling Auto Sales of Sidney.

At one time, she served as chair of the Unadilla Democratic Party and was in charge of the St. Matthew’s Church Altar Guild. She was an avid gardener and reader and enjoyed creating and selling crafts.

Verna is survived by her husband, Warren W. Richards of Unadilla; her daughters and sons-in-law, Daughn and Dennis Darlin of Wells Bridge, Susan Kuss of Saratoga Springs, Peggy and Lynn Lisenby of San Antonio, Texas, Gloria Richards of Ithaca, Robin and David Lewis of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Mary-Lynn and Scott Henchey of Unadilla; a brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Marie Girard of Brant Lake; a sister-in-law, Angie Richards of Oneonta; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Raymond and Samuel Girard; and her son-in-law, Joseph Kuss.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 14, at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Joel T. Grigg, Rector, officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends called at The Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, with the family in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or the Wells Bridge Fire Department First Responders.

Funeral arrangements are by The Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, Funeral Directors.

Martha Ann Winter

SCHENEVUS — Martha Ann Winter, beloved wife, loving mother and grandmother, lost her battle with cancer on Tuesday, July 13, 2004. She was at her home surrounded by her family at the time of her death. She was 67.

Martha was born on July 23, 1936, in Bristol, Conn., the daughter of Adam and Annie (Dimeo) Plungis.

She married Harold Winter on Oct. 1, 1960, in Washington Heights, New York City.

Martha retired after 27 years of dedicated service at Astrocom in Oneonta.

She spent all of her free time enjoying her beautiful gardens, entertaining her friends and cooking wonderful meals.

She is survived by her husband, Harold; her daughter, Katherine, and her husband, Matt Goodrow, of Oneonta; her son, Christopher, and his wife, Tara Winter, of Cobleskill; her grandchildren, Saysha, Kayla and Trent Goodrow of Oneonta; a brother, James, of Tequesta, Fla.; and several cousins and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be held at noon on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Tom Berardi as celebrant. At Martha’s request, following the memorial Mass, friends and family are invited back to her home in Schenevus for a celebration of her life and to enjoy her beautiful gardens.

Calling hours will be Friday, July 16, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Martha to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, or the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Katherine W. Hutchinson

NEW BERLIN — Katherine Ayres Weed Hutchinson, 95, formerly of Gilbertsville and Oneonta, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

Born in Binghamton on April 29, 1909, the daughter of William Ayres Weed and Nanine Coats Kimball, she was raised by her mother and stepfather Hamilton Harris, owner of Gilbertsville’s hardware store.

In 1934, she married Marshall Hoyt Hutchinson, son of Josephine Lewis and Elmore E. Hutchinson, who was rector of Zion Episcopal Church in Morris.

While raising her family in Oneonta, she was a Cub Scout Den mother and volunteered for more than 20 years for the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts and especially the Family Service Association.

Survivors include her daughters, Nanine Kimball Hutchinson of East Thetford, Vt. and Alberta Lewis Hutchinson of Gilbertsville; a sister, Caroline Cox Mason of Gilbertsville; daughter-in-law, Ann Michele (Micki) Baluck Hutchinson of Middletown and grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Hutchinson of Arlington, Mass., and Christopher Edward Hutchinson of Middletown.

She was predeceased by her father in 1909, an infant sister, Marion Gilbert Harris in 1916, an infant son, David Marshall in 1943, her husband in 1969 and son, Peter Edward, in 1976.

A celebration of her life will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, at the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville.

Interment will be private sometime later in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Katherine’s name, may be made to the Family Service Association, 277 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Robert D. Terry

HAMDEN — Robert D. Terry, 76, of Hamden passed away Monday evening, July 12, 2004, in Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, after a short illness.

Mr. Terry was born in Brooklyn, the son of the late Gerard and Marion DeLong Terry.

He married the former Susan Nicoletti on May 7, 1961, in Brooklyn.

He served his country in the Army during World War II. He was a graduate of Yale University, class of 1950, and continued his education at Columbia University, earning a M.A. in journalism.

He worked most of his life as a freelance corporate writer, then into semi-retirement he continued by writing plays and musicals.

Bob was an untiring humanitarian who arranged for medical care of disadvantaged peoples of other nations. He also was an active conservationist, and a New York Historian who specialized in the history of Delaware County.

Bob was a former member of the Yale Glee Club; Walton Grange; Delaware County Chamber of Commerce; Downsville Historical Society; Founder, Editor, and Distributor of the Seven Rivers Journal; Executive Director, and Founder of Delaware Heritage; and a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Walton.

Bob was also a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Bob is survived by his wife, Susan Terry; three sons, Dr. Richard and Maria Terry of Apalachin, David and Alexandra Terry of Fairfield, Conn., and Jonathan Terry of Rochester; six grandchildren, Robinson, Kristian, Rachel, Joseph, David, and Elisa Terry; one brother, Richard G. Terry of Arlington, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, John Terry.

As a tribute to Robert Terry and his life, there will be a performance of Bob’s own "John Burroughs, A Way of Nature," on Aug. 27 and 28, at the Bear Spring Amphitheatre, at times to be announced.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 41 Gardiner Place, Walton, at 11 a.m. on Aug. 28, 2004, with the Rev. James A. Gussweller officiating.

Memorial contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to Delaware Heritage, Box 442, Downsville, NY 13755.

Charlotte Wetmore

UTICA — Charlotte G. Wetmore, 87, wife of the late Herbert Wetmore, died July 11, 2004, at St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital Center.

She was born in New Berlin on Oct. 28, 1916, a daughter of Burton and Bessie Carpenter Chase, and received her education in local schools.

Charlotte was formerly employed with her brother in his automobile business in Utica.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles, which was a great part of her life.

Surviving include two sisters-in-law, Vivian Chase of Morris and Dorene Chase of Edmeston; and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral services will commence on Friday at 12:30 p.m. from the Surridge & Roberts Funeral Home, 470 French Road, Utica. Visitation for Charlotte will be one hour before her funeral service. Interment will take place in Beechwood Cemetery, Forestport.

Joseph S. Curcio

COOPERSTOWN — Joseph S. Curcio Sr., 55, of Cooperstown died Tuesday morning, July 13, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, with his family at his side.

Joe was born on Sept. 17, 1948, in Cooperstown, a son of Salvatore ("Sam") and Jennie (Sapienza) Curcio.

He married Sharon Gaughan on Oct. 20, 1973, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Raised in Cooperstown, Joe graduated from Cooperstown Central School, with the Class of 1967. He then attended DeVry Institute of Technology in Chicago before becoming employed by Astrocom Electronics in Colliersville in 1969. He was employed there until 2003.

Joe was a communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown. An accomplished golfer and bowler, Joe bowled in several leagues in Cooperstown, Milford and Oneonta. He also enjoyed country music and was an avid New York Mets baseball fan.

After serving for more than 20 years, Joe was a retired member of the Cooperstown Fire Department and past foreman of the Mechanics Hook and Ladder Company No. 5.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sharon; his mother, Jennie Curcio; his daughter, Jennifer Curcio; his son, Joseph S. Curcio Jr., all of Cooperstown; his mother-in-law, Arlene Gaughan of Middlefield; his sister Mary Mullins and her husband, Paul, of Hartwick; two nieces, Meridith and Lindsey Mullins of Ithaca; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; several aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins, including Joseph Sapienza of Dallas, Texas; and many friends, including a special friend, Nancy St. John.

He was predeceased by his father, Salvatore (Sam) Curcio; two uncles, Sam Sapienza and Jack Sapienza; two aunts, Mary Sapienza and Rose Sapienza; and a cousin, Santo Sapienza.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding.

Immediately following the funeral Mass the Cooperstown Fire Department’s 1952 Mack E4 will bear Joe to St. Mary’s Cemetery in Index, for the Rite of Committal and burial.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Friday, July 16, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., when Joe’s family will be in attendance.

A firefighter memorial service to be conducted by members of the Cooperstown Fire Department will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening.

A Vigil service will be offered at 8:45 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home, with Fr. Rosson, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Fire Department, PO Box 1, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Robert D. Terry

HAMDEN — Robert D. Terry, 76, of Hamden passed away Monday evening, July 12, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, after a short illness.

Mr. Terry, the son of the late Gerard and Marian DeLong Terry, was born in 1928, in Brooklyn.

He married the former Susan Nicoletti on May 7, 1961, in Brooklyn.

He was a graduate of Yale University, class of 1950, and continued his education at Columbia University, earning a master’s degree in journalism.

Prior to completing his education, Bob served his country in the Army during World War II.

He worked most of his life as a freelance corporate writer, while simultaneously composing and writing plays and musicals of an historical nature, a lifelong vocation. Bob was an untiring humanitarian who identified with the plight of disadvantaged people.

An active conservationist and New York state historian, Bob specialized in the history of Delaware County. He was founder and executive director of Delaware Heritage, an organization whose objective is to preserve and celebrate the cultural history of Delaware County. The Seven Rivers Journal, a magazine that chronicles and promotes Route 206, was founded and edited by Bob.

Bob also sang in the Yale Alumni Glee Club, played the organ for various local churches, participated in the Walton Grange, the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, the Downsville Historical Society and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Walton.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Bob is survived by his wife and most devout supporter, Susan Terry; three sons, Dr. Richard Terry of Apalachin, David Terry of Fairfield, Conn., and Jonathan Terry of Rochester, their spouses; and six grandchildren, Robinson, Kristian, Rachel, Joseph, David, and Elisa Terry; one brother, Richard G. Terry of Arlington, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, John Terry.

As a celebration of Bob’s life, there will be a tribute performance of Bob’s own musical, "John Burroughs, A Way of Nature," on Aug. 27, 2004, at 6 p.m. and Aug. 28, at 3 p.m. at the Bear Spring Amphitheater. In addition, a memorial service preceding the performance on Aug. 28 will be held at the Christ Episcopal Church, 41 Gardiner Place, Walton, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to Delaware Heritage, Box 442, Downsville, NY 13755.

Mary Rose Cannon

BURLINGTON FLATS — Mary Rose Cannon of Burlington Flats died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

She was born May 8, 1922, in Utica, the daughter of Ernest and Rose Markis.

Mary is survived by her husband, Albert J. Cannon, presently of Burlington Flats. They were married in 1943 and following their marriage resided for many years in Queens. She is also survived by her son, Brian G. Cannon, M.D., of Johnstown and his wife, Vinnie, and their two children, Matthew and Brendan; and by her son, Conall G. Cannon, of Remsen and his friend, Lisa; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her son, Shawn G. Cannon, who died while serving his country in Vietnam. Mary was predeceased by her two sisters, Betty Sutherland of New Jersey and Joan Margot of Utica; and her brother, William Markis of Utica.

Mary worked for many years at Andrea Radio Corporation in Queens as a bookkeeper.

She loved to travel, was an avid reader and a longtime collector of memorabilia.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Father John Rosson of St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, officiating.

Private burial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Hubert A. Harwood

DELHI — Hubert Arthur Harwood, 83, of Delhi, former longtime Stamford resident, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

The son of Raymond E. and Dorothy Frances (Andrews) Harwood, he was born Sept. 27, 1920, in Lynn, Mass., moving to New York City, where he was a boy-soprano in St. Agnes Choir, Trinity Parish, awarded the distinguished "Watson Medal" in 1935, later continuing his vocal training with the noted Pasquale Rubino.

A graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School, he attended New York University and was employed by Consolidated Edison of New York in early years.

A veteran of both World War II and the Korean era, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps the day after the Pearl Harbor attack, serving in the 1st Marine Division, and fought in the battles of Guadal Canal, New Guinea and New Britain. After two years in the Pacific, he was returned to Camp LeJeune, N.C.

He married Catherine L. Kaufmann of Stamford in 1945. The marriage ended in divorce and he subsequently married Jean (Hotchkin) Dreyfus of Delhi in 1961. She died Feb. 25, 2003.

After working as cashier of the National Bank of Stamford, "Hugh" was hired by the late Fred P. Murphy to run Prospect Dairy Inc., "Hi-Health" milk products, Stamford. He expanded the business to include 32 counties in New York state, which led him into beginning a chain of 62 convenient food stores from Albany to Westchester and Rockland counties, and in the Hartford-New Haven areas of Connecticut, with the company headquarters moving to Cold Spring. During this time, he also served as the director of the Fishkill National Bank.

In 1978, he sold the company and moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where he became the Special Projects Manager for Circle K Corporation, operating 1,200 convenience stores in the Southwest. Through his contacts there, he launched a new business in Sydney, Australia, developing a chain of convenience stores, "Quick Stop Food Shops" of which he was also managing director.

After two and a half years, he returned to the United States, and in recent years had been residing in Delhi, where he will be remembered in the community for his enthusiastic vocal performances.

He is survived by his children, Susan Harwood of Albany, and John (Carol) Harwood of Stamford; step-children, Ann Dreyfus and Deborah Dreyfus of Saratoga Springs, and Lynn (Patricia) Dreyfus of Queensbury; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Nancy Truscott officiating, after which the family will receive friends. Burial with military honors by Donald W. Gleason Post 190, American Legion, of which Hugh was a member, will be 2:30 p.m. in the Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hubert A. Harwood Memorial Vocal Scholarship Fund, care of Delaware National Bank, Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.
