Milton V. Wright

WORCESTER — In addition to the funeral service being held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester, there will also be a memorial service celebrating the life of Milton V. "Flash" Wright at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester.

Thomas G. Nolan

SAG HARBOR — Mr. Thomas G. Nolan, 88, passed away on July 17, 2004, at the Folts Home, Herkimer. He was formerly of Sag Harbor.

He was born Oct. 10, 1915, in Brooklyn, the son of Thomas F. and Mary (Fortwengler) Nolan.

He married Dorothy Beckmann on Feb. 20, 1943, in Sacred Heart Church, Glendale. She predeceased him Nov. 30, 2003.

He was a graduate of St. Matthias School, Glendale. He was a welder by trade during World War II. He owned and operated Arnold Bread Route in Queens for many years.

He was an attendant at Central Islip State Hospital and worked for the Town of Southampton Highway Department until retirement in 1980.

Survivors include his daughter and husband, Kathy and John Walsh of Canajoharie; grandchildren, Christopher, his wife, Sherri Smith, Matthew Smith, Joy and her husband, Steven VanHeusen, and Shawn Walsh; and two great-granddaughters, Amiah Valdez and Rachel Smith.

There will be a memorial service Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Folts Home Chapel, Herkimer, with the Rev. Oertel officiating and a funeral Mass on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. in St. James Church, Fort Plain, with Father Kenneth Swain officiating.

Contributions in Mr. Nolan’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Mildred Hitchcock

WALTON — Mildred V. Hitchcock of Walton, a lifelong area resident, died on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at her residence, surrounded by her family. She was 77.

Mrs. Hitchcock was born Aug. 17, 1926, in Dryden to Harrison and Willimia Sherman Henderson.

On July 27, 1945, Mildred married John C. Hitchcock in Elkton, Md. He predeceased her in 2000.

She worked as a meat packer for Great American in Binghamton and then in Walton.

Mrs. Hitchcock was a member of the New Hope Community Church and will be remembered for being a great mom and always having an open door for her and her children’s friends and family.

She is survived by her children, Linda Kae Neale of Hancock, David (Helen) Hitchcock of Walton, Donna (Gary) Silverstein of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., Mark Hitchcock of Walton, John (Tricia) Hitchcock of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton.

Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at the funeral home with pastor Larry Light of the New Hope Community Church officiating.

Donations in her name to Catskill Area Hospice or the New Hope Community Church in Walton would be appreciated.

Milton V. Wright

WORCESTER — A memorial service celebrating the life of Milton V. "Flash" Wright will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester.

Clara J. Brechbuhl

MILFORD — Mrs. Clara J. Brechbuhl, 84, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Grinnell, Iowa.

She was born on Jan. 27, 1920, in Milford, a daughter of Earl and Ella (Olds) Kilts.

Her first marriage was to Cecil Richard Reynolds; they later divorced. She later married Rudolph Brechbuhl, who predeceased her.

She moved from Milford to Brooklyn, Iowa, in 1992, to be closer to family there.

Clara is survived by a daughter, Joan, and her husband, Robert Wing, of Morris; two brothers, Bill and Ceylon Kitts of Milford; two sisters, Dorothy Konchar of Maryland and Ruby Chase of Milford; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; son, Cecil Richard Reynolds; daughter, Sandra; three brothers and two sisters.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Westville Cemetery, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Robert J. Schmidt

ONEONTA — Robert James "Jim" Schmidt, 56, of Oneonta died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at the Skilled Care Facility at The Hospital, Sidney, after a courageous battle with multiple sclerosis.

He was born Nov. 3, 1947, in Walton, the son of Robert and Frances (O’Leary) Schmidt.

Jim graduated from Island Trees High School, Levittown, where he was on the marksmanship club. For one year he attended Delhi Tech., and then transferred to and graduated from SUNY Oneonta.

He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era. After his honorable discharge, Jim also served in the National Guard in Oneonta as well as the Army Reserves in Oneonta, Walton and Utica.

On Dec. 12, 1998, he married Cheryl Perry in Oneonta.

Jim worked for New York state in Oneonta as a job service Interviewer until his retirement in 1987 due to multiple sclerosis.

He enjoyed hunting, sports (especially watching the New York Yankees, his favorite baseball team) camping, reading and listening to books on tape, eating and cooking (he had a gourmet palate) and traveling when he was able. But most of all, Jim loved spending time with his family.

He was a volunteer at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, a volunteer as a peer counselor for the Catskill Center for Independence, a member and supporter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, a member of the Walton American Legion and also a member of the Oneonta B.P.O.E. Club No. 1312.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Schmidt, and their son, Brian Schmidt of Oneonta; his mother and stepfather, Frances and Guy Guerino of West Babylon; his two sons, Randy and Jeffery Schmidt of Laurens; his stepson, Adam Widner of Ft. McCoy, Fla.; one sister, Cindy Dalvano of West Babylon; one brother, Randy Schmidt of West Babylon; one aunt, Ann, and her husband, John Pachnek of North Carolina; one uncle, Thomas O’Leary of Florida; one niece and one nephew, Shannon and Thomas Dalvano Jr., both of West Babylon; father and mother-in-law, Herb and Esther Mayne of Burlington Flats; sister-in-law, Donna, her husband, Jim Fogarty of Utica; brother-in-law, Eugene Perry of Goose Creek, S.C.; as well as several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service to celebrate the life of Robert James "Jim" Schmidt will be held on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society National Upstate New York Chapter, 457 State St., Binghamton, NY 13901, in loving memory of Robert James "Jim" Schmidt.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Richard Lee Elder

BLOOMVILLE — The Rev. Richard Lee Elder, 62, known to many as Pastor Dick, passed into glory on July 20, 2004, in the presence of family at O’Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born on July 11, 1942, the son of Wilbur and Mary (Zubrod) Elder in Chicago, Ill. He grew up on a farm in Wisconsin, and married Carolyn Gasser on March 24, 1962.

His life was devoted to his family, and to serving God throughout his 27 years as a Methodist minister; having served Van Cortlandtville Community Church in Peekskill, Great Hill UMC in Seymour, Conn., Hobart UMC in Hobart and Bloomville UMC in Bloomville. He enjoyed serving as chaplain of the Allen Residential Center and YLA and the Delaware County Jail. He touched many in the surrounding communities.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carolyn of Bloomville; their children and spouses, Danial Elder of Arkport, Kimberly and Lenny Grossman of Andover, and Michael and Debra Elder of Naugatuck, Conn.; grandchildren Benjamin Elder, Morgan, Havah, Robin, Joel, Jesse, Abram, Anna, Elizabeth and Gabriel Grossman, and Zachary, Bradley and Jakob Elder; brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Connie Elder of Beaver Dam, Wis., David and Linda Elder of Baraboo, Wis., Lester and Sally Elder of Wis Dells, Wis.; sister and brother-in-law, Betty Lou and Steve Jasper of Winthrop Harbor, Ill.; and an uncle and aunt, Joe and Ruth Elder of Panama City, Fla.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, July, 26, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Hobart United Methodist Church, Hobart, with Bishop Ernest S. Lyght, the Rev. Elliott Oakes and the Rev. Mark Chatterton, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Pastor Dick’s memory can be made to the Bloomville United Methodist Church, Bloomville.

We, his family, rejoice to know that he is in the Lord’s presence. "Well done good and faithful servant."

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

Alice H. Barney

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Alice H. Barney, 91, of 6563 Engram Road, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., formerly of Mount Vision, died Wednesday morning, July 21, 2004, at Bert Fish Hospital, New Smyrna Beach.

She was born May 29, 1913, in Sidney, Mont., the daughter of Adolf and Ane Catherine Hansen.

She married Clifford Barney on June 17, 1931. He died Nov. 17. 1982.

Alice is survived by three daughters, Wilma Barney Gras and her husband, Don of Gloversville, Frances Barney Burns of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Allene Barney De Beauchamp and her husband, Gordon of DeLand, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Mount Vision Cemetery, Mount Vision, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice in loving memory of Alice H. Barney.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Margaret L. Moore

COOPERSTOWN — Margaret Louise Moore, 100, died July 7, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Jan. 5, 1904, in Utica, to Edward and Louise Raser Moore. In her youth she moved with her family to New York City’s Greenwich Village.

She went to NYU, danced under the direction of Ruth St. Dennis at the Winter Garden and was a Ziegfeld Girl.

During World War II she worked on a daily paper for the Pentagon.

Margaret’s mother was a designer and collector of wearable artifacts who opened a jewelry shop in 1922. In 1954, after leaving the Pentagon, Margaret began working in the same field when she opened a business in the Village on Washington Square Park. She was accomplished in making one-of-a-kind hand-crafted jewelry. Her work was shown in museums throughout the world. Articles about her appeared in the Herald Tribune, The New York Magazine and others during her nearly 35 year stay in New York City.

Margaret moved to Cooperstown in 1990, and in 1998, moved to The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, where she lived until 2002.

Her brothers, Edward and Robert Moore predeceased her, as well as her son, Eugene Kearney, and grandson, Nicholas Kearney.

Survivors include grandson, Jack Raser Kearney; and granddaughter, Kristen Kearney.

A gathering of her friends will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, 48 Grove St., Cooperstown.

Bruce W. Irwin

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Bruce W. Irwin, 84, died Thursday, June 24, 2004.

Born in a Model T Ford near Utica, he was the son of the late Walter and Sarah Mead Irwin.

He was raised in the Grand Gorge area and was a double-letter athlete in basketball and baseball. He was a toolmaker for General Electric.

Bruce received a degree in watchmaking from Western Pennsylvania Chronological Institute. He owned and operated Irwin Jewelers in Cohoes until 1967. Bruce then moved his family to Central Florida and continued as a jeweler and watchmaker for a total of 50 years.

He was an avid golfer and lover of all animals.

Bruce is survived by his second wife, Jeannette Davis; his loving daughters, Sheila Irwin of Grafton, Robin Irwin of Gotha, Fla., Tracy Irwin of Asheville, N.C., and Kelly Irwin of New York City; four grandchildren, Emily, Adam, Sarah and Mohamed El Samahi of Gotha, Fla.; his brother, William of Roxbury; and sister, Viola Persall of Norwich; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bruce was predeceased by his loving wife of 32 years, Esther Brooks; his brothers, Walter, George, Ray and sisters, Helen Raymond and May Wright.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Expressions of sympathy, in his memory, may be made to your local Alzheimer’s association.

Stephen D. Race

MARYLAND — A graveside service for Stephen D. Race, 60, of Mount Vernon will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004, at the Elk Creek Cemetery, Maryland. Military honors will be presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Stephen and his family spent many summers in Schenevus. He is the grandson of the late Harold and Matilda DeWerth and the nephew of the late Ronny and Eleanor DeVillers.

Contributions may be made to Mount Sinai Hospital, Liver Transplant Research, Number One, Gustave L. Levy Place, Box 1104, New York, NY 10032, Attn. Helen Hauff.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Barbara J. Kluge

SMITHVILLE FLATS — Barbara J. Kluge, 42, passed on Saturday, July 24, 2004, the way she lived her life, peacefully and quietly at her home surrounded by her loved ones.

She fought a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. She may have retired from this world in body and spirit, but she will always be imbedded in our hearts and souls forever.

Barbara was born Dec. 16, 1961, in Cooperstown. She was employed by Frito-Lay as a packer for the past 12 years.

She is survived by her lifelong partner and friend, Cindy Perkins, and her special lifelong friend, Joyce Errante, both of Smithville Flats.

Barbara’s family held a special and personal place in her heart. She is also survived by her mother, Rosalind Kluge, and grandmother, Ella Lasell, of Smithville Flats; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Erika Kluge, of Norwich, Krista and Darrell Barlow of Nashua, N.H.; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Paul and Ellen Kluge of Skaneateles, John Kluge of Skaneateles Falls, Glen Kluge of Chenango Forks; nieces and nephews, Tim, Amy, Abram, Andrew, Angel, Justise, Andy and Oliva; also, Chyrel Perkins, her in-laws, Doug and Becky Perkins, and her buddy Cheryl Youngs and several pets, especially her cat Willow and dog Hound.

She is predeceased by her father, Henry Kluge, and uncles, Erich Kluge and Chet Lasell.

Barb’s family and extended family wish to express special thanks to the many friends and co-workers who visited and brightened up her last days. Very special thanks to everyone at Frito-Lay for their support, fund-raisers and sunshine baskets.

Also, heartfelt thanks to everyone at Chenango County Hospice, including Barb’s favorite nurse, Karen, for their compassionate care for the living as well as the dying.

Barb wanted to relay special thanks and love to all her co-workers, especially Patty, Christian, Serrina and last but not least, her buddy, Coop! (Keep them laughing, girl.)

There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at the Root Funeral Home, 23 N. Chenango St., in Greene.

Grant U. Shumway

ONEONTA — A committal service with military honors for Grant U. Shumway, who died on July 5, 2004, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, in the Glenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Phil Livermore officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. Oneonta.

Jose Tomas Gil

COOPERSTOWN — Jose Tomas Gil, 92, of Cooperstown died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare.

Jose was born on March 7, 1912, in Mazeleon, Spain. He immigrated in 1933 and made Cooperstown his lifelong residence.

He married Julia Maddalone Gil on Nov. 24, 1940, at St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

They resided for many years on Pioneer Street and more recently at the Thanksgiving Home on Grove Street in Cooperstown.

He is survived by his wife, Julia; his daughter, Marie Dolores Gil of Kingston, and his daughter, Jo-Ann and her husband, Larry Smith Sr., of Palm Bay, Fla., and her daughter, Veronica Gil, and her longtime companion, Bob Seaver, of Cooperstown. He is also survived by his beloved seven grandchildren; his eight great-grandchildren; and by his many nieces, nephews; and his great-nieces and great-nephews in Spain.

Jose was predeceased by his son, Jose Tomas Gil Jr., in 1982.

Jose was a member of the Native Sons of Cooperstown and was a 68-year member of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department. He never missed an opportunity to drive or ride on Company No. 1’s pumper in every parade or event.

He was a fourth-degree member of Leatherstocking Council No. 1879 Knights of Columbus and was a former Grand Knight. Jose was a member of the Mohican Club and the Redmen’s Hall.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.

Jose drove a school bus for the Cooperstown Central School district for more than 20 years and was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels for several years. He was a self-employed businessman, owning and operating the then-Atlantic Gas Station on Chestnut Street in Cooperstown for many years.

He was an accomplished gardener and all-around "jack of all trades." His always-evident smile and jovial good nature will be missed by everyone who knew him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, and Fr. John R. Roos, pastor emeritus, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Index.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Pioneer Street, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 1, Cooperstown, in memory of Jose.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford. They are assisted by Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, Cooperstown.
