Barbara J. Kluge

SMITHVILLE FLATS — Barbara J. Kluge, 42, passed on Saturday, July 24, 2004, the way she lived her life, peacefully and quietly at her home surrounded by her loved ones.

She fought a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She may have retired from this world in body and spirit, but she will always be imbedded in our hearts and souls forever.

Barbara was born Dec. 16, 1961, in Cooperstown. She was employed by Frito-Lay as a packer for the past 12 years.

She is survived by her lifelong partner and friend, Cindy Perkins, and her special lifelong friend, Joyce Errante, both of Smithville Flats.

Barbara’s family held a special and personal place in her heart. She is also survived by her mother, Rosalind Kluge, and grandmother, Ella Lasell, of Smithville Flats; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Erika Kluge of Norwich and Krista and Darrell Barlow of Nashua, N.H.; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Paul and Ellen Kluge of Skaneateles, John Kluge of Skaneateles Falls and Glen Kluge of Chenango Forks; nieces and nephews, Tim, Amy, Abram, Andrew, Angel, Justise, Andy and Oliva; also Chyrel Perkins, her in-laws Doug and Becky Perkins and her buddy, Cheryl Youngs; and several pets, especially her cat Willow and dog Hound.

She is predeceased by her father, Henry Kluge, and uncles Erich Kluge and Chet Lasell.

Barb’s family and extended family wish to express special thanks to the many friends and coworkers who visited and brightened up her last days. Very special thanks to everyone at Frito-Lay for their support, fund-raisers and sunshine baskets.

Also, heartfelt thanks to everyone at Chenango County Hospice, including Barb’s favorite nurse, Karen, for their compassionate care for the living as well as the dying.

Barb wanted to relay special thanks and love to all her co-workers, especially Patty, Christian, Serrina and last but not least, her buddy Coop! (Keep them laughing girl.)

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Root Funeral Home, 23 N. Chenango St., in Greene.

Violet Moore

UNADILLA — Violet Moore, 84, of Unadilla passed away peacefully Sunday evening, July 25, 2004, with her loving family at her bedside in her home.

She was born July 7, 1920, in Maryland, the daughter of Herbert and Mae (Harvey) McAdams.

She was married twice; her first husband, Chauncey Clapper, and second husband, Ike Moore, predeceased her.

Violet was a homemaker in her own home and had also worked as a New York home health aide for many years caring for others.

She had been a resident of Unadilla for the past five years and before that had lived in South New Berlin. She was an avid gardener.

Violet is survived by her sons and daughters, Ted Clapper of Hollowville, Larry Clapper of Unadilla, Joan Royko of Bainbridge, Vaughn Clapper of Oklahoma, Jennie Bailey of Niverville, and Alan Clapper of Syracuse; one brother, Joe McAdams of Oneonta; one sister, Peachie Darling of Arizona; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Chauncey Clapper Jr., her brothers, Herbie, Henry and Johnny, and sisters, Birdie, Juanita, Virginia and Katie.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Mildred Amatuccio

POUGHKEEPSIE — Mildred I. Amatuccio, 77, a resident of Poughkeepsie since 1996 and formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1927, in Oneonta, the daughter of Harry and Ella Mae (Yager) Masker.

She married Angelo Amatuccio in 1944 in Oneonta.

Millie was a former unit secretary at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was a loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Angelo Amatuccio, of Poughkeepsie; a daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Frank Desiano of Poughkeepsie; her grandchildren, Ronald Ingraham and Nicole Ingraham; a sister, Selma Masker of Syracuse; as well as several nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and -nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Kenneth W. Hendrickson

BAINBRIDGE — Kenneth W. Hendrickson passed away peacefully on Friday, July 23, 2004, at his home in Bainbridge.

He was born June 21, 1917, son of the late Leon and Grace Hollenbeck Hendrickson in Afton.

Kenneth married Dorothy Fleming on April 10, 1937, in Sidney.

He was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney for 38 years.

Kenneth had a love for horses that he trained and raced with his wife. In retirement, they did a lot of traveling with the horses.

He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as fishing, hunting and golfing.

He is survived by wife of 67 years, Dorothy Hendrickson, Bainbridge; son and daughter-in-law, John (Jack) and Deborah Hendrickson, Bainbridge; three grandchildren, Anne and Tracy Winchester, Unadilla, Jackie Hendrickson, Bainbridge, John and Kim Hendrickson, Unadilla; four great-grandchildren, Dustin and Dillon Hendrickson and Trevor and Brook Winchester; sister, Pauline Mowry, Afton; his dog and companion, Shania Lynn; and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by four sisters, Ruth, Doris, Irene and Blanche; and two brothers, Howard and Wayne.

Graveside services will be held Friday, July 30, 2004, in Eastside Cemetery in Afton, at 11 a.m. with Priscilla DeNyse officiating. Friends and family are welcome following the service to come to Jack and Deb’s home, 3 Pearl St., Bainbridge.

Contributions in memory of Ken may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.

Richard Palmer

ONEONTA — Richard "Allan" Palmer, 64, of 2 Riverside Ave., passed away on Saturday morning, July 24, 2004, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Albany, with his loving family at his side.

He was born on Jan. 10, 1940, in Little Falls, a son of the late Walter K. Palmer Sr. and Alice (Malone) Palmer, and graduated with the St. Mary’s Academy, Class of 1957.

He enlisted with the United States Navy on Jan. 15, 1959, and was honorably discharged on May 27, 1964.

He was once united in marriage with the former Carol Diodati.

Allan retired from P&C Supermarket in 2002, after 40 years of dedicated service, and he held memberships with the Loyal Order of the Moose in Oneonta and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Oneonta.

Allan was a loving father and grandfather.

Survivors include four children, Scott Palmer and wife, Cindy, of Burlington, N.C.; David Palmer and wife, Donna, of Latham; Michele Kerin and husband, Michael, of Colonie; and Sharon Barron and husband, David, of Latham; his grandchildren, Dana and Ryan Palmer of Burlington N.C., Ashley Surprenant and Taylor Palmer of Latham, Courteney and Shannen Kerin of Colonie, and Christopher and Matthew Barron of Latham; three brothers, Kenneth Palmer and wife, Barbara, of Little Falls; James Palmer and wife, Janet, of Sparks, Nev.; and Walter Palmer Jr. and Laura Lee Palmer of Pittsfield, Mass; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Malone Roy, father, Walter Palmer Sr., stepfather, Kazmier Roy, and his longtime partner, Joan Page.

The family received relatives and friends at the Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, Monday, July 26, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Allan’s funeral will begin at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday morning from the chapel of the funeral home where prayer will be offered and 11 a.m. from Holy Family Parish, corner of East Main and John Streets, Little Falls, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato, pastor. Procession will follow to St. Mary’s Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest.

Walter ’Tink’ Roe

CORNING — Walter E. "Tink" Roe Jr., 83, formerly of 29 Landau Drive, Horseheads, and later residing at 2983 Goff Road, Corning, went to be with his Lord on Friday, July 16, 2004, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center.

He was born on Aug. 4, 1920, in Walton, to the late Walter and Barbara (Wormsley) Roe Sr.

Tink was predeceased by his loving wife, Rosa Roe, in November of 2003.

Tink is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Terrell and Eileen Roe of Orlando, Fla., and Kirt and Patricia Roe of Corning; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Raymond Baldi of Walton; grandchildren, Terrell (Ann) Roe of Albany, Chantal (Paul) Avila of Pasadena, Calif., Kirt Roe of Elmira, Brandon and Christopher Roe, both of Corning; great-grandchildren, Luke and Ava Roe, both of Albany.

Tink was retired from the New York State Armory Division. He served his country proud in the United States Army during World War II. Walter was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Walton American Legion where he was also past Post Commander. Tink also received the Medal of Good Conduct after returning from WW II. He was also a member of the Catholic War Veterans in Elmira Heights.

Tink loved to socialize (talk), hunt and fish, but most of all, Walter loved to attend his grandchildren’s sports events and to spend time with them by playing or swimming. Tink was an avid sports fan and played semi-professional baseball with a Boston Red Sox farm club.

Visitation was held Sunday, July 18, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home, Elmira.

A prayer service was held Monday, July 19, 2004, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Our Mother Church, Horseheads, with the Rev. Christopher Linsler as celebrant. Interment took place in Bath National Cemetery, Bath, with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Chemung County Military Honor Squad, 236 Scottwood Ave., Elmira Heights, NY 14903 in memory of Tink.

JoAnne Beckingham

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mrs. JoAnne Beckingham, 44, left this world unexpectedly on July 23, 2004, at home.

She was born July 29, 1959, in Paterson, N.J., the daughter of Ronald and Florence (Butler) Ricker Sr.

She married Timothy Beckingham on March 28, 1998, in East Springfield at Ala York Farm.

She was a 1977 graduate of Butler High School, Butler, N.J.

JoAnne loved the simple pleasures of life. Having raised four children, her family was the focus of her life. She enjoyed the beauty of nature. JoAnne especially loved her flower gardens, wood crafting, jewelry making, photography and the company of her cats who joined her in her activities. She enjoyed a variety of music.

As a mother of a military son she was very supportive of our troops. She had a very kind heart, often helping members of the community and her family.

Survivors include her husband, Timothy Beckingham; sons, Jessie Lyon, Joey Lyon and Caleb Beckingham; a daughter, Jennifer Owens of Springfield, Mo.; grandchildren, Dylan and Chaslan; a sister, Bonnie Riffel of North Haledon, N.J.; a brother, Ronald Ricker Jr. of Wanaque, N.J.; niece and nephew, Sean and Deanna Riffel; and her father, Ronald Ricker Sr. of Wanaque, N.J.

She was predeceased by her mother, Florence Ricker.

JoAnne’s loving and giving spirit will be greatly missed by all that loved and knew her kindness.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, East Springfield, with Pastor Susan Burdsall officiating. Burial will follow in Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

There will be no public calling hours.

Contributions in Mrs. Beckingham’s memory may be made to the Springfield First Responders.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Robert J. Brooks

GILBERTSVILLE — Robert J. Brooks, 83, of Gilbertsville passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at his home in Gilbertsville.

He was born Aug. 9, 1920, in the town of Butternuts, son of Charles and Nancy (Barse) Brooks.

Bob married Marjorie Johnson at Latham’s Corners on April 2, 1948.

Bob worked for I.T.&C.A. Welch of West Edmeston, for 11 years. His love of farming led him to work as farm manager for the H.W. Naylor Company for 21 years.

Bob served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the Washington, D.C., area.

Bob is survived by Marjorie, his loving wife of 57 years; his children, Julieanne Tweed and husband Jerry of Columbus, Ind., Chris Brooks of San Diego, Calif., Lesa Allen and husband Ronald of Mount Upton; and six grandchildren, who were a joy to him. They are Shannon Vara of Rahway, N.J., Amy Crosby of Oneonta, Matthew Tweed and wife Aimee of Madison, Wis., and Ronald and Cary Allen of Mount Upton; as well as his great-grandchildren, Gabriella Vara and Collin Tweed.

Bob was predeceased by his twin brother, Joe Brooks, and a brother, Earl Brooks.

Bob was devoted to his family and was a devoted member of the River Street Baptist Church for 30 years, where he served his Lord as deacon and trustee. Bob assisted his wife in preparing Bibles for children, a missionary outreach program.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 31, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the River Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer officiating.

Burial will take place in Brookside Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad or the River Street Baptist Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Raymond Briscoe

OTEGO — Raymond Merton Briscoe, 87, of Otego died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 24, 1916, in Franklin, the son of Merton and Ida (Vroman) Briscoe.

He married Birtha Brown on April 13, 1938, in the Otego Christian Church Parsonage.

Raymond worked as a farmer for many years. He also worked for Amphenol Corporation for more than 20 years until he retired in 1983. After retirement, Raymond worked at Wilber National Bank in Oneonta as a courier.

He attended Fellowship Baptist Lighthouse Church on Covered Bridge Road.

Raymond was a very kind man who enjoyed visiting, watching sports and going to baseball games on occasion.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Birtha of Otego; his daughters, Sandra Currie and her husband, Donald, of Maryland, Sydney Beams and her husband, Richard Beams, of Afton, Penny Hamilton and her husband, Gary, of Sidney, Rae Lynn McCurdy and her husband, Keith, of Unadilla, Jennifer Tonetti of Otego and her fiance, Jason Burns; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Raymond was predeceased by his daughter, Pamela Briscoe Benedict; one brother, Ernest Briscoe; and one sister, Bernice Lent.

At Raymond’s request, there will be no calling hours.

A graveside committal service will be held for Raymond M. Briscoe on Friday, July 30, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, with Russell McCurdy, retired pastor, officiating.

At the family’s request, no flowers please. Memorial contributions may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825 or to the Fellowship Baptist Lighthouse Church, 1050 Covered Bridge Road, Unadilla, NY 13849 in Raymond’s memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Donald B. Tubbs

ANDES — Donald B. Tubbs, 71, of County Highway 1, Andes, passed away Monday, July 26, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Don was born on Aug. 30, 1932, in Ossining, the son of William and Enid (Smith) Tubbs.

He married Carol Jacoby on Feb. 27, 1954, in Croton on the Hudson.

He was in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1955. He was a retired guidance counselor, serving schools in the BOCES program at Stamford. Don had also been a teacher at Shalamont, Elizabethtown and Hoosick Falls school districts.

Don lived in the Andes area since 1962; he graduated from Croton-Harmon High School and attended SUNY Cobleskill, Oswego and Plattsburgh.

Don was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish, Margaretville, the American Legion in Andes and was a past member of the Tremperskill Rod & Gun Club. Don enjoyed the outdoors and being active. He was a fisherman and hunter.

Don is survived by his wife, Carol Tubbs, Andes; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ray Magill, Vergennes, Vt., son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Kathleen Tubbs, Ticonderoga, a son, Jeffery Tubbs, Arkville, and daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gregory Greenlow, Savannah, Ga.; grandchildren, Jason Sabourin, Caitlin Magill, Meagan Tubbs, Carly Tubbs, Justin Tubbs, Ryan Greenlow and Brianna Greenlow.

He was predeceased by one son, William Tubbs, and a brother, William Tubbs.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell as celebrant. Burial will be in Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Memorial gifts in memory of Donald B. Tubbs can be made to the Andes Emergency Medical Services.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
