Julian S. Herring

UTICA — Mr. Julian S. Herring, 85, formerly of Cooperstown, died Saturday morning, July 24, 2004, at his home in Utica.

He was born on July 6, 1919, the son of Addison and Eva Herring in Oneonta.

Julian graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1939. He was called into the Army in November of 1940, and served until 1945. He was in the 62nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery. He received six bronze stars for being in six D-Day invasions from Africa to Germany.

At the end of the war, he married Margaret Smith in Scotland. They had been married for 56 years. He was predeceased by Margaret in 2001.

He was a partner at McEwans Hardware until his retirement in 1982. He spent 12 years of his retirement working at The Farmers’ Museum.

He was a member of the Cooperstown Fire Department for 25 years and was also a member of No. 138 Masonic Lodge of Cooperstown.

He is survived by his daughter, Heather Herring of Utica; a brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Pat Herring, their two children and great-nieces and -nephews; a niece, Jeanette Cairns of Linlithgow, Scotland, her husband, James, their three children and great-nieces and -nephews.

Friends are asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either Friends of Bassett or the Oneida/Madison County Hospice.

His daughter wants to thank all the doctors and nurses at Bassett Hospital, both in Cooperstown and Herkimer, for all they have done over the last three years. She also wants to thank the members of Hospice for all they did this past month.

There will be no calling hours.

He will be buried at the Crown Hill Memorial Park in Clinton.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Mildred Amatuccio

POUGHKEEPSIE — Mildred I. Amatuccio, 77, a resident of Poughkeepsie since 1996 and formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1927, in Oneonta, the daughter of Harry and Ella Mae (Yager) Masker.

She married Angelo Amatuccio in Oneonta in 1944.

Millie was a former unit secretary at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was a loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Angelo Amatuccio, of Poughkeepsie; a daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Frank Desiano of Poughkeepsie; her grandchildren, Ronald Ingraham and Nacole Ingraham; three great-grandsons, Anthony, Landon and Austin; a sister, Thelma Masker of Syracuse; as well as several nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and -nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Agnes I. Michaels

COOPERSTOWN — A memorial service for Agnes I. Michaels, who died Jan. 13, 2004, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Sundar Samuel, pastor officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Francis L. Bunn

MORRIS — Francis L. (Bunny) Bunn, 69, of Morris died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at his home.

He was born Feb. 23, 1935, in Garrattsville, the son of Harry R. Bunn and Harriet (Hickling) Bunn.

He married Holly Carroll on Sept. 24, 1995, at their home in Morris.

He was employed by Powerline Contractors of Clinton as a lineman and heavy equipment operator. He had formerly been employed as a truck driver for Wadham’s, Palmer L.P. and McBrides.

He was an honorary member of the Garrattsville Fire Department, having joined the department six months after its beginning.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and took great pride in the numerous ponds and structures he had built in his lifetime and especially the home that he and Holly built and loved. He was also a past member of the New Berlin Rod and Gun Club.

Bunny is survived by his wife, Holly, of Morris; his children, Terry Bunn and wife, Debbie, of Hartwick Seminary, Steve Bunn and wife, Chris, of Virginia, Bonnie Moore of Watertown, Fran Bunn Jr. of Garrattsville, Tobey and Hope Bunn, both of Oneonta, Casey Bunn of Florida; two stepchildren, Mark Stevenson and wife, Doris, of Utah, and Laurel Stevenson and husband, Wayne, of Florida; a brother, Vernon Bunn, and wife, Barbara, of Utica; as well as several grandchildren and nieces.

He was predeceased by his brothers, James and Richard Bunn.

There will be no calling hours and memorial services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Morris Emergency Squad in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Claude S. Cook

UNADILLA — A memorial service for the late Claude S. Cook of Unadilla will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Norman Tiffany, pastor of the Sand Hill United Methodist Church, officiating.

Glenn A. Becker

GUILDERLAND — Glenn A. Becker II (Bliss), 31, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 24, 2004.

He was born in Niskayuna and was a 1992 graduate of Guilderland High School.

Glenn was a loving and dedicated father to his cherished daughter, Brittany DeAnna Becker, 7; adored son of Robin and Timothy J. Bliss and Glenn and Dawn Becker; devoted brother of Amy Backer; beloved grandson of Al Pachter and the late Beryl Pachter, Harold Becker and the late Virginia Becker, Shirley L. Bliss and the late Elmer J. Bliss and Janis Pokeda. Glenn is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Glenn was a gentle friend to many and touched the lives of everyone who knew him.

Services were held Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. The Rev. Robert Kazinski from the Portlandville, Milford Methodist Church officiated.

Contributions may be made for Brittany’s College Fund, care of Robin Bliss, 3533 Ridge Road, Scotia, NY 12302.

Linda J. Stoughton

SIDNEY — Linda J. Stoughton, 61, of Sidney died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Aug. 19, 1942, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Coy and Gertrude Hester.

Linda worked at the Senior Meals in Sidney.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Ernie and Tammy Fankhauser of Hurley, Kevin Fankhauser of Oneonta, Charles and Jessica Fankhauser of Princeton, N.C., and Tina Stoughton of Sidney; and her seven grandchildren, Bobby Jones of Florida, Gregory and Megan Fankhauser of Hurley, Kaylyn and Emily Fankhauser of Princeton, N.C., and Zachary Schinski and Khailee Stoughton of Sidney.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Wallace M. Wood

UNADILLA — Wallace M. Wood, 86, of Unadilla passed away Monday, July 26, 2004, at his home.

He was born March 10, 1918, in Suffern, the son of Clark E. and Neva (Wamsley) Wood.

He was married to Helen T. Brannigan on July 15, 1940, in New York City. Mrs. Wood predeceased him on May 22, 1990.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy.

Wallace has been a resident of Unadilla since 1978, and had previously resided in Hillsdale, N.J. He was a retired district manager of Schraffts Restaurants in New York City.

He is survived by his brother, Robert Wood, of Huntersville, N.C.; his sisters, Roberta Blomquist of Pompton Plains, N.J., and Alta Bogardus of Unadilla; his nephews and nieces, Donald and Kathy Bogardus of Sloansville, Bruce and Eileen Bogardus of Merrick, Bonnie and John Baldasaro of Clifton Park, Neva and Thomas Lee of Rock Hill, S.C., Robert Wood Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Alexandria Wood of Connecticut, Lynn and Thomas Russo of Clifton, Va., Robert Blomquist of Clark Summit, Pa., Gary and Caroline Blomquist of Perth Amboy, N.J., and Kathy Blomquist of Yonkers; also several great-nieces and -nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara A. Wood, on Jan. 19, 1987.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in memory of Wallace M. Wood.

Funeral arrangements by Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Mathilde Salamacha

BURLINGTON — Mathilde Salamacha, 95, formerly of Salamacha Road, entered into eternal rest on Thursday evening, July 29, 2004, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

Born on Feb. 25, 1909, in Oberschefflenz, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Karl and Kristina Zilling. Coming to America as a young girl she had lived in New York City.

It was there that she met Steven Salamacha. They were married on Oct. 10, 1930. Mathilde and her husband moved to Hartwick in 1939 and established a dairy farm. They shared a devoted union of 69 years until his passing on Jan. 24, 2000.

She enjoyed the tranquillity of the country life, tending her garden, and cooking and baking apple cakes from her favorite apple tree that grew outside her window.

Her qualities were many, and people were drawn to her and her enduring nature. She was loved by many and easily returned everyone kindness. She will be truly missed.

She was founding member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church of West Burlington.

Surviving are a son and his wife, Richard and Judy Salamacha of Burlington; a daughter, Nancy C. Demerre and her husband, George, of Little Falls; a daughter-in-law, Rosalyn Salamacha of Hammond; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband Steven she was preceded in death by a son, Edward S. Salamacha on July 28, 1999, four brothers and four sisters.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who cared for Mathilde during her stay at Woodside Hall, The Meadows and the care given by Catskill Area Hospice. Their love and compassion will be cherished.

Funeral service will be on Monday at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service (from 1 to 2 p.m.)

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Charles R. Miller

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Charles R. Miller, 78, was called home by the Lord on July 28, 2004, at Murfreesboro Hospital, Tenn. His devoted wife Mary was at his side.

Charles was born Nov. 30, 1925, in Hamilton, the son of William Arthur and Blanche May (Burroughs) Miller.

He was united in marriage to Mary Parker on May 27, 1944, at the Edmeston Baptist parsonage.

Upon retirement from the Edmeston Highway Department, where he had served as highway superintendent, both he and Mary started traveling across the United States.

They later settled in Murfreesboro, being affiliated with The Sword of the Lord. He and Mary continued to be active church members of the Franklin Road Baptist Church, enjoying the bible together.

Charles was a past member of the Edmeston Fire Department, serving in the position of fire police.

Charles is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; his children and their spouses, Ruth Anne and Royce Hill of Edmeston, Timothy A. and Nazan Miller of South Dakota; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his siblings, Clara Green of Edmeston, Jesse A. and Millie Miller of Minnesota, and Henry F. and Betty Miller of Verona; one uncle, Hildreth Burroughs, of Vernon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His son, Allen R. Miller, his grandson, Thomas Hill, his brother, Wayne Miller, and his sister, Caroline Fuller, predeceased Charles.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the Berean Baptist Church in New Berlin, with Pastor Gary Foltz officiating. Interment will follow at Unadilla Forks Cemetery, Unadilla Forks.

Calling hours are Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
