Barry Dickerman

BINGHAMTON — Barry Lee Dickerman, 65, of Binghamton passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Binghamton, May 5, 1939, the son of Mary (Radez) and Maynard "Dick" Dickerman. A childhood accident rendered him disabled, and he was a life member of the Broome Developmental Center and ARC program.

He is survived by aunts, Helen Eckerson, Unadilla, and Anna Weckel, Carbondale, Pa.; and uncles, Henry Radez, Richmondville, and Joseph Radez, Cobleskill; along with numerous cousins and friends.

Calling hours will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at the DeMunn Funeral Home, Conklin Avenue, Binghamton, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. John the Evangelist Church, Binghamton.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ross Park Zoo, 60 Morgan Ave., Binghamton, NY 13901.

Luther G. Breeden

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — Luther Garfield Breeden Jr., 77, of Mt. Pleasant died suddenly Aug. 1, 2004, at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. He was a summer resident of Springfield Center.

He was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Fauquier County, near Morrisville, a son of the late Luther Garfield Breeden Sr. and Nola Anna Ennis Breeden.

Mr. Breeden was a retired machinist with the U.S. Government. Since retirement, he enjoyed woodworking.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.

He was a charter member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 7728 in Morrisville, Va., as well as the Goldvein Volunteer Fire Department, Goldvein, Va., and was a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry. He was also a member of the Shriner’s Omar Valley in Richmond, Va., and also the Shriner’s of Mt. Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Raymond Breeden.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia S. Breeden; his children, Luther G. Breeden III, Midland, Va., Janice B. Clore, Fredericskburg, Va., Donna B. Piwetz, Madison, Va., Lawrence Garfield Breeden, Frederick, Md., and Samuel Ennis Breeden, Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Moser Funeral Home, 233 Broadview Ave., Warrenton, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, at Grove Baptist Church, Goldvein, by the Rev. M. Peyton Embrey. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Frances Driscoll

MASONVILLE — Graveside services for Frances Driscoll, 87, who passed away Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Gilmour Nursing Home, Norwich, will be held on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Afton Glenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Angelo Amatuccio

POUGHKEEPSIE — Angelo Amatuccio, 82, a resident of Poughkeepsie since 1996, and formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

He was born on May 28, 1922, in Oneonta, the son of Angelo and Angelina (Pizza) Amatuccio.

He married Mildred I. Masker in 1944, in Oneonta. She predeceased him on July 25, 2004.

Angelo was a maintenance man for Ottaway News Inc., in Oneonta. He was a member of the Laborers Union in Oneonta.

He served his country in the Army during World War II from 1940 to 1945.

He was a loving, caring husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Frank Desiano of Poughkeepsie; his grandchildren, Ronald Ingraham and Nacole Ingraham; three great-grandsons, Anthony, Landon and Austin; four sisters, Margaret Ranni of Raleigh, N.C., Madeline Bellamy of Poughkeepsie, Mary Thorne of Oneonta and Teresa Spencer of Oneonta; as well as several nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and -nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Emil P. Grocholl

ROXBURY — Emil P. Grocholl, 76, of Roxbury passed away Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

Emil was born on May 20, 1928, in Kelly Corners, the son of Eric Grocholl and Elsa Heitman.

He married Bonnie Voorhees in 1972 at the United Methodist Church in Roxbury.

He served in the United States Army 5th Calvary Regiment during World War II, from 1945-1947.

He was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 825, Springfield, N.J.

He graduated from Margaretville Central School.

Emil was an avid pilot, former Boy Scout leader in Margaretville, past fire chief in Fleischmanns, past president of the Delaware County Senior Council and past commander of Ralph S. Ives Jr. Post No. 1785, Roxbury, and was a trustee of the United Methodist Church in Roxbury.

Emil was a member of the United Methodist Church, Roxbury; Delaware County American Legion, where he was commander for the past two years. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Club of Roxbury; Ralph S. Ives Jr. American Legion Post No. 1785; and Amateur Ham Radio Club, Margaretville.

He was an aide to the 6th District Commander. He was vice president of Senior Action Council in Albany.

Emil is survived by his wife, Bonnie Grocholl; his children, Sally, John, Joan, Dan, Mike, Dawn, Deidre, Philip and Peter; grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Jackie Grocholl; mother and father-in-law, Velma and Bruce Voorhees; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at the United Methodist Church, Roxbury, with Pastor William Hawes and the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Burial to follow at the Methodist Cemetery in Roxbury.

Contributions may be made in memory of Emil P. Grocholl to the Ralph S. Ives Jr. American Legion Post No. 1785, Roxbury, NY 12474.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Alice Chamberlain

ONEONTA — Alice W. Chamberlain, 77, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born March 5, 1927, in Maryland, the daughter of Lynn and Hazel (Benson) Chamberlain.

Alice grew up in Maryland, and was a graduate of Andrew S. Draper Central School in Schenevus.

Alice served in the United States Navy Waves from 1952 to 1957. After service in Hawaii, she went to Washington. D.C., where she was a civilian secretary to the Naval Department until retirement.

After retirement, Alice moved to South Glens Falls for 10 years before returning to Oneonta for 15 years.

Alice was a volunteer at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in the gift shop.

She is survived by her two brothers, Earl and his wife, Gladys Chamberlain, of Voorhessville, and Harold and his wife, Jane Chamberlain, of Otego; two sisters, Dorothy Clark of South Glens Falls, and Delmar and Mrs. Charles (Ethel) Rosenzweig of Binghamton; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Interment will be at the Maryland Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Alice to the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the American Cancer Society, 101 John J. Audubon Parkway, Amherst, NY 14228-1198.

Russell S. Kozuki

EAST WORCESTER — Russell S. Kozuki, 88, of East Worcester passed away Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

He was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Stockton, Calif., the son of Matsuwaka and Yukino (Nakajima) Kozuki.

Russell married Ghitta Bunn in 1952. She predeceased him Oct. 10, 1990.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving in World War II, from 1941 to 1945.

He was a member of the Schenevus VFW Post 1592 and a former member of the Cooperstown VFW.

Russell was a resident of East Worcester for 20 years, and was a self-employed gem stone cutter and jeweler. Russell operated a martial arts studio in New York City and was employed by the International School of Self Defense.

He has written and published many karate instructional books. Russell was also a chef in New York City, as well as at The Agusta in Cobleskill, and was an avid lover of studying and enjoying music, photography, gemology and fishing.

He leaves behind his family in California and Hawaii.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Mapleview Cemetery, North Road in East Worcester, with the Rev. Judith Thistle officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 1592.

Florence B. Hall

ALBANY — Florence B. Hall, 86, of Albany, formerly of Stamford, passed away Wednesday morning, Aug. 4, 2004, at home.

Born Jan. 13, 1918, in Troy, she was the daughter of J. Frank Beebe and Edith Lutton Beebe.

She was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School and Russell Sage College, with a degree in home economics.

Mrs. Hall, affectionately known as "Babe" to her friends and "Nana" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford where she was an ordained elder. Among her other civic activities, Mrs. Hall was an original member of the Stamford Village Improvement Association, a member of Inner-wheel, a Girl Scout leader and volunteered at CORE and Robinson Terrace.

Although she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching hummingbirds, her greatest joy was baking cookies and pies for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Albert G. Hall, her brother, Leonard L. Beebe and son, William B. Hall.

She is survived by two sons, James A. Hall and his wife, Carol, of Tannersville, Pa., and Donald A. Hall and his wife, Sharon of Camillus; and a daughter, Joanne Hall of Albany; six grandchildren, Timothy Hall, Kristina Leshnower, Kathryn McGinley, Brian, Troy and Matthew Hall; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford. Interment will follow at the Stamford Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753 or the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, NY 12167.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Alice Chamberlain

ONEONTA — Alice W. Chamberlain, 77, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Benjamin Saporito

EDMESTON — Benjamin Saporito, 69, of Edmeston died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004.

He was born on Nov. 4, 1934, in Orange, N.J., the son of Andrew and Alice (Holmes) Saporito.

He married Janet Skwirut on Sept. 15, 1990.

Ben retired as police lieutenant from the Orange Police Department in New Jersey and had relocated to Edmeston in 1995.

Ben was a member of the PBA, the Shar-Pei Club of America and was a past member of the Blue Knights.

His wife, Janet; his children, Mary Alice Saporito, Laura Molinari, Diane Saporito and Dolores Saporito; and his granddaughter, Christina Molinari survive Ben.

A memorial service to honor Ben’s life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with Father John Burns officiating.

John E. Merzig

ONEONTA — Dr. John E. Merzig died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany after a brief illness.

He was born in Buffalo on Jan. 27, 1921, to Matthias and Gladys (Wells) Merzig.

He was a graduate of Ebenezer High School and Houghton College in Houghton. He entered military service in 1943, and under the Army Specialized Training Program was enrolled in medical school at St. Louis University in Missouri, from which he graduated in 1946.

In 1944, he married Beatrice Gage of Morris in St. Louis.

He interned at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester and took over the general practice of Dr. John Clarke in Morris in 1947. While in Morris, John and Bea had three boys, Edward in 1948, John (Jack) in 1950 and David in 1952.

In 1953, John entered an anesthesia residency at Albany Medical Center. After his certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology, John volunteered for service in the U.S. Army Public Health Service. In his two years in Public Health Service, he was posted to the Marine Hospital on Staten Island, the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Fort Defiance, Ariz., and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

After completing military service in 1957, the family returned to Oneonta where John organized the Department of Anesthesiology at A.O. Fox Hospital, the department in which he served as chief until 1983. He established a School of Respiratory Therapy at Fox Hospital, training many of the area’s first therapists. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology, a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the Christian Medical Society.

In 1964, he purchased property in Laurens town, where he built a cabin that provided a place of peace and enjoyment for John, his extended family and friends.

As a "gentleman farmer," he pursued bee-keeping, maple syrup production and clock repair, among other hobbies, which formed the core of his interests after retirement. His daily visits to Boudreau’s Coffee Shop and his many acts of kindness to his neighbors in Laurens made John a beloved fixture of his adopted community.

John is survived by Bea, his wife of 60 years; and his three sons, Edward G. Merzig, MD, of Albany, the Rev. John W. Merzig, DMin., of Telford, Pa., and David S. Merzig, JD, of Oneonta, and their wives, Barbara, Roberta (Babs) and Margery. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Karenna and her husband, David, Rowenhorst of Alexandria, Va., Laura and her husband, David, Fabrycky of Silver Spring, Md., Matthew of McLean, Va., Martha and her husband, Ben, Burrington of Ann Arbor, Mich., Leslie of Washington, D.C., John Edward II and his wife, Marianne, of Clifton Park, and Sarah and her husband, Richard, Fountain of Lincoln, Neb. He is also survived by nephew, Paul Merzig of Chicago, Ill.; niece, Marie (Merzig) Bialy of Freedom; and many grandnieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are being made through the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. The family will be present for calling hours from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 9.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dan Lamberton of the First Baptist Church of Morris officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Houghton College, Houghton, NY 14744.
