Ethel Sloane

BAINBRIDGE — Ethel Sloane, 67, of Bainbridge passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Aug. 9, 2004.

She was born in Roseboom on Sept. 10, 1936. Her parents were Herbert Lee Brodie and Mildred Clara (Streeter) Brodie.

She graduated from Cherry Valley High School in 1953 and from SUNY Cobleskill College in food service in 1956.

She worked as a dietitian at Glens Falls Hospital. She worked at Cooperstown Bassett Hospital as a secretary to the credit manager until moving to Oneonta.

In 1967, the family moved to Bainbridge. She volunteered her time in various organizations, including as Cub Scout leader, chairwoman of the Bainbridge Girl Scouts, and secretary of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce.

The Rotary Club of Sidney presented her with the Vocational Service Award in June 1997.

Ethel was a member of the Bainbridge Friday night bowling league for 25 years. One of her greatest passions in life was playing golf. She was a member of the Sundown Golf course in Guilford and played on the Ladies Lost Ball League on Thursday nights.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge since 1968.

In 1972, she started to work at the Mirabito Fuel Company in Sidney, and retired from there in December 1997, as the office manager.

On Dec. 12, 1992, she married George R. (Dick) Sloane, and they moved into their house on Bainbridge-Guilford Road.

She is survived by her husband; three sons and daughters-in-law, Henry and Marilyn DuFour of Toledo, Ohio, Jeffrey and Deana DuFour of Sidney, and Daniel and Mary DuFour of Baldwinsville; and a daughter, Deborah DuFour of Liverpool; one stepson, Gary Sloane of Norwich; and a stepdaughter and her husband, Terri and Michael Neeley of Clay; eight grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren. She also has three brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Eleanor Brodie of Middleburgh, Ernest and Margaret Brodie of Sidney, and Elliot and Louella Brodie of South Valley; and a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law, Marjorie and Robert Hoffman of Guilford. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Maurice Brodie; two sisters, Leona Brodie and Thelma Swartout; and a stepson, David Sloane.

Funeral arrangements are being made through C.H. Landers Funeral Home in Sidney. The family will be present for calling hours from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at the funeral home with Judy Travis of the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ann E. Fleischman Rowe

CONESVILLE — Ann E. Fleischman Rowe, 70, a resident of Conesville and Holiday, Fla., died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at her home, surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with cancer.

Ann was born March 18, 1934, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William and Helen McCabe Flaherty.

She married Marvin Fleischman of New York City on May 10, 1953. He predeceased her Sept. 22, 1965.

She moved with her family to Prattsville in 1963. She later married Russell Rowe of Albany on Sept. 27, 1970.

She lived in the town of Conesville for several years. In 1995, she moved to the New Port Richey, Fla., area, spending her summers in Conesville with her children, grandchildren and friends.

She was a member of the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Grand Gorge for several years. It was there that she lovingly oversaw the food pantry, and she also took part in the Christmas Feeling Fund for 15 years.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as president of the Gilboa Lioness Club. She was also a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in New Port Richey, where she served as a Eucharist minister for the homebound and sick, and also for LaCasa Grande Home and the Life Care Center, where she also prayed the Rosary on Saturdays. She was vice president of St. Thomas Aquinas Legion of Mary Queen of Heaven and also volunteered her time to the S.O.L.V.E. program for expectant mothers and their new babies.

Ann is survived by a son, Patrick Rowe, United States Army sergeant, stationed recently in Iraq and now in Germany, and his girlfriend, Christie Nunley of Corinth, Miss., and his children, Steven C.C. Rowe, Bradley Hassin-Rowe and Mairtin Rowe; a daughter-in-law, Robin Fleischman of Conesville, and her children, Trinity Fleischman of Stamford and Amber Fleischman of Brooklyn; a son, Michael Fleischman Sr. and his wife, Dawn Fleischman, of Conesville, and their children, Michelle Fleischman of Conesville, Desiree Fleischman of Walton and Michael Fleischman Jr. of Conesville; a sister, Mary McColl of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, William Flaherty of Holiday, Fla., a brother, Hugh Flaherty of Terryville, Long Island, a sister, Margaret McColl of Holiday, a brother, Steven Flaherty of Wolcott, Conn., a brother, Joseph Flaherty of Terryville, Conn., a sister, Annie Janz of Naugatuck, Conn., as well as their spouses; and several nieces and nephews. Also very dear friends Annie McAllister of Conesville and Rosie Ianello of New Port Richey; along with many other dear friends too numerous to mention.

She was predeceased by three of her children, daughters, Martha Jeanne and Nancy Mae Fleischman on Dec. 25, 1976, and a son, Martin William Fleischman on Aug. 17, 2000.

Calling hours from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Michael Cournoyer as celebrant. Burial will be in Manorkill Cemetery, Manorkill.

Contributions may be made in her memory to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 327 W. Main St., Cobleskill, NY 12043 in order to give this wonderful caring organization the recognition and support it deserves.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

George Liddle

ANDES — A memorial service to celebrate the life of George Liddle, who passed away on May 13, 2004, in Norfolk, Va., will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at the Andes Presbyterian Church, Andes. The Rev. Daniel McCollister, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Walter Strohmaier, from Florida, will officiate. Burial will be in the Andes Cemetery following.

Family and friends are invited to a fellowship hour at the church immediately following the burial.

Memorial donations in his name may be given to the Andes Presbyterian Church or the Andes Cemetery, or one of your choosing.

Harriet B. Lyon

LAURENS — Harriet B. Lyon, 95, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, in the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, where she had resided since August 2000.

She was born Jan. 2, 1909, in the town of Harpersfield, a daughter of N. Josiah and Anna (O’Brien) Buck.

She attended a one-room school on the Odell Lake Road, Stamford Seminary and the Graduate Teacher’s Training Class there.

She taught school one year in the one-room Quaker Hill School at North Harpersfield.

She was married to her childhood sweetheart, Loren Lyon on July 7, 1927. They were married 65 years before his death in 1992. They resided in Stamford, before moving in 1954 to Laurens, where they operated a poultry farm for several years.

She was an 80-year member of the Grange, joining Utsayantha Grange at Stamford and later the Otego Valley Grange, holding many offices, including master. She was a member of the Oneonta Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Laurens Presbyterian Church, active in the women’s group and the Sunday School. She had been a 4-H leader, a member of the Home Bureau and the Laurens Firemen’s Auxiliary. She was the cook for Headstart when it first opened in Laurens.

She is survived by four children, Anna Elwyn and Rose Nelson of Laurens, Arthur Lyon and his wife, Jane, of Jonesboro, La., and Emma Benware and her husband, Ira, of Madrid; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy Hartwell and her husband, Clarence, of Jefferson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Fred Lyon of Holmes; a daughter, Martha Gierisch of Gardiner; and two sisters, Normina Wilson of Stamford and Ruth Bailey of Great Bend, Pa.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in the Laurens Presbyterian Church. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon in the church following the service.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the family plot in the Stamford Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Lyon to the Laurens Presbyterian Church, 3 Main St., Laurens, NY 13796.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley and Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Beulah I. Osborn

BURLINGTON FLATS — Beulah I. Osborn, 83, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at her home in Oxford.

She was born June 15, 1921, in Hartwick, the daughter of Willard and Ella (Southworth) McLean.

She married Alfred Osborn on Oct. 29, 1939. He predeceased her on July 4, 1970.

Beulah was a very enterprising and independent woman. Her first priority was her family, and then her church. She was a member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Burlington Flats, where she had served as secretary for many years. She was instrumental and one of the founding members who helped build Saint John’s.

Beulah had a delightful sense of humor and enjoyed being able to pull off a well-designed joke. It was a trait that was also enjoyed by the residents and staff at the Veterans Home in Oxford.

From 1970-1979, she was a family care provider in her home in Burlington Flats. She enjoyed her flower garden, fishing, country music, dancing, canning, traveling and the New York Yankees.

Beulah is survived by her children and their spouses, Dawn Schidzick, Patti and Clifford Fitch, Elsie and Jerry Wells, and Marshall and Norma Osborn; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her sisters, Columbine O’Blake, Marjorie Snyder, Betty Crockford, Alberta Eastman and Edna Ruland.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Nelson McLean, Kenneth McLean, Lyle (Pete) McLean, Clyde (Chub) McLean, Norman (White) McLean, Arnold (Cork) McLean, Leonard (Peonie) McLean, Wanda Stewart, Gladys Scrivener, Albeama Gabroshik and Erma Hughes; and her son-in-law, Carl Schidzick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Paul Messner and Bruce Hecker officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at the funeral home.

Interment will follow the service at Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick.

Donations may be made in Beulah’s memory to Saint John’s Lutheran Church or the American Alzheimer’s Association.

Avonelle J. Martin

WARRINGTON, Pa. — Avonelle J. Martin, 94, of Warminster, Pa., formerly of Otego, went to her Lord on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Neshaminy Manor in Warrington, Pa.

She was born on July 22, 1910, in Forest County, Pa., the daughter of Jay and Olive (Kiffer) Catlin.

She was a graduate of Lockhaven State Teachers College, Class of 1930. While at Lockhaven, she met a young state trooper, Robert H. Martin, who she married Aug. 9, 1930, and spent her early teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Forest County.

An intelligent and elegant lady, Avonelle kept busy in her retirement years working in fine jewelry and gift stores. During her years in Otego, Avonelle worked for Gabriel Harris Jewelers of Oneonta. There she made many dear friends whose memories and friendships she carried with her for the rest of her life.

Avonelle is survived by her two daughters, Donna and her husband, Dan Donohue, of Warminster, Pa., and Sally and her husband, Mark Borden, of Franklin. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Robert and his wife, Mary Ann McOwen, William and his wife, Debra McOwen, John and his wife, Bonnie Hartner III, and Cynthia Hartner and her fiance, Peter Marciano; and three great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents, a sister, Ernestine Catlin, and her husband, Robert Houston Martin.

Funeral arrangements are being made through the Wm. Rowen Grant Funeral Home, Street Road and 2nd Street Pike, Southampton, Pa.

Relatives and friends are invited to her services, 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, and the family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Neshaminy Manor Activities Department, 1660 Easton Road, Warrington, PA 18976.

Stephen W. Willsey

OTEGO — Stephen W. Willsey, 63, of Otego passed from this life into heaven to live with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at his residence.

He was born July 26, 1941, in Cooperstown, the son of Eugene D. and Mary E. (Morehouse) Willsey.

He was married to Barbara Schroeder.

Stephen was a local real estate appraiser.

A lifelong area resident, he was a member of the Oneonta Assembly of God Church, where he was currently serving on its board of directors. He also was very involved in the church’s worship team.

He was a member of the Otsego County Board of Realtors.

Stephen was an avid golfer and played in several leagues, but most of all, he enjoyed the special family times spent with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Willsey, of Otego; his children and their spouses, Chon and Steve Benjamin of Stamford, Terri and Pepe Burgher of Portlandville, Matthew and Pina Willsey of Syracuse, Naomi Castle and Robbie Dixson of Otego, Melissa and Steve Moore of Hilton Head, S.C., Jodi Taylor of Oneonta, Edward Taylor and Lesley of Fort Pope, N.C., Michael Willsey of Oneonta, Stephanie Willsey and John Schrieber of Otego, and Anna and Rachel Willsey of Otego; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Delores Willsey, of Cooperstown; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, David Willsey, a sister, Lois Willsey, and a son, Stephen Willsey.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in the Oneonta Assembly of God Church with the Rev. John Grenier and the Rev. Clive Meidahl officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

Friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Oneonta Assembly of God Church, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Assembly of God Church, 1667 County Highway 48, Oneonta, NY 13820

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Martha B. Grogan

SCHOHARIE — Martha Bliss Grogan of South Main Street, formerly of Clarence Center, entered into eternal rest at the Schaeffer Family Homestead, known as "The Rocks," on Aug. 11, 2004.

Marty was born in Albany on Feb. 28, 1930, a daughter of the late Hon. F. Walter Bliss and Margaret Schaeffer Bliss.

She attended the Middleburgh Central School, graduated from The Emma Willard School, Cornell University and the University of Buffalo School of Finance, becoming a Certified Public Accountant practicing in Williamsville with the firm of Lawler, Kersten and Witkowski. She was also a recent graduate of the Catholic Biblical Studies Program.

On July 18, 1953, Marty married Joseph W. Grogan, DVM, of Springfield, Mass., who predeceased her.

She is survived by six daughters, Dr. Patti Grogan, Peggi Friedman, Maggi Royle, Sue deBruijn, Kate Baker and Kelli Grogan Brown. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Skyler and Kennedy Grogan Heidel, Rebecca and Suzanna Friedman, Dan and Cindy Royle, Neil and Martin Baker and Joseph and Patrick Brown; as well as her sister, Janet Bliss Snyder; and other family members including Dr. Leonard N. Berdan and Margaret N. Bliss; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Predeceased family members include her sister, Margaret Bliss Berdan; her brother-in-law, Rudy Snyder; and her son-in-law, Jim Brown.

Throughout her life Marty gave her time and energy generously. She was involved in many volunteer activities and always gave more than she received. She touched, helped and loved more than any of us know. She lived to make the world a better place for family and friends. While she demanded so much of herself, she only saw the best in the people around her. She found and reveled in the natural beauty created by the human mind and hand.

We will miss her presence more than we can now understand, but she will never truly be gone — we will feel her in our hearts forever.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at the Middleburgh Reformed Church with Pastor Mary Wisner and Sister Joan Curley officiating.

Private burial will follow in Old Stone Fort Cemetery at a later date.

The final months of Marty’s life were made possible through the wonder of blood and platelet transfusions. Her wish is for anyone who is able, to donate to the American Red Cross, either financially or by blood donation.

"The earth is less now without her, but surely the heaven will shine more brightly."

Ruth A. Delaunay

ONEONTA — Ruth A. Delaunay, 85, of Oneonta passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

She was born in Schenectady on Sept. 25, 1918, the daughter of Henry and Adeline (Dunn) Liedkie.

She married Valentine Delaunay on Nov. 13, 1983, and he predeceased her on Sept. 24, 2000.

As well as being a homemaker, Ruth also was a deputy with the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department, where she served as a matron for 12 years.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and its Young at Heart Group, the Johnstown Women of the Elks, the Women of the Moose and the New York State Sheriff’s Association.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed games of chance as well as deep sea fishing and cooking. At one time in earlier years she was active in scouting.

Ruth will always be remembered for her beautiful smile.

She is survived by her children, Dee Ouimet of Scotia, Elizabeth Collins of Scotia, Sharlene Reploeg of Richmondville, Claudia Leveille of Otego and Mark Lemieux of Schenectady; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Grace Liedkie of Scotia; and a cousin, Alexander Yodis of New Baltimore.

She was predeceased by a son, Paul Tomlison, and a brother, Henry Liedkie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends are invited to call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, on Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, from 8:30 a.m. until departing for church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760, or the Otsego County SPCA.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Elizabeth Mae Stickles

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Elizabeth Mae Stickles, 82, of County Highway 22, Richfield Springs, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 11, 2004, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown. She had the comfort of her family and special friends at her side at the time of her passing.

Elizabeth was born on June 2, 1922, in Syracuse, a daughter of the late George and Ruth Riley Schultz.

She was a lifelong area resident who was raised and educated in Richfield Springs.

On July 13, 1940, she married Claude L. Stickles in Richfield Springs, a devoted and blessed union of 52 years until his passing on June 4, 1993.

A devoted homemaker, she enjoyed the company of her family and friends.

She was a member of Bridgewater Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving her are two daughters, Claudia Fox and her husband, John, of Mocksville, N.C., and Carolyn Stacey and her husband, Joseph, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, William Schultz of Durhamville; two special friends, Gail Lewis of Edmeston and Diane Gilbert of West Winfield; and special nephew and niece, Rodney and Charleen Jones of Richfield Springs.

Besides her husband, Claude; two sisters, Gloria Jones and Ruth Brundt, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will take place privately at the convenience of her family.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.
