Ellen Marner

FRANKLIN — Ellen Marner, 98, died peacefully at her home in Franklin on July 9, surrounded by family and helped immeasurably by a visiting nurse and aide from Catskill Area Hospice.

A memorial gathering will take place in Franklin on Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, between 4 and 7 p.m. Those who wish to attend are requested to call 829-2038 for details.

Friends and relatives who are unable to attend are invited to send written comments that can be read at the gathering to PO Box 47, Franklin, NY 13775.

Donations in her name to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Franklin Emergency Squad, PO Box 8, Franklin, NY 13775 would be appreciated by her family.

Bernadine Kosier

SOUTH KORTRIGHT — Bernadine M. Kosier, 81, of South Kortright died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born April 20, 1923, in Waukesha, Wis., the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Sanders) Goetz.

She married Francis J. Kosier on Oct. 8, 1949. He predeceased her on May 20, 1987. They farmed together on the family farm on Betty Brook Road for many years.

Mrs. Kosier later cooked for the South Kortright Rest Home and the Hearthstone Adult Home, Hobart.

She was an avid Green Bay Packers and New York Yankees fan, and enjoyed cooking and baking, as well as needle arts, including sewing and cross stitch, and when she could she loved to travel.

She was a member of the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus of South Kortright and later Sacred Heart in Stamford.

She is survived by a daughter, MaryAnn (Wayne) Stewart, Wilmington, Ohio; two sons, Lawrence (Dawn) Kosier, Summit, and John (Karen) Kosier, South Kortright; her grandchildren, Jamie and Denika Kosier, Florida, Joseph Kosier, Florida, Jeffrey, Brian, Kayla Kosier, Summit, Carol (Jake) Downing, Arizona, Brenda (John) Bowman, Wilmington, Mike and Mathew Stewart, Wilmington, Geoffrey (Amy) Roberts, South Carolina, and Stephen Kosier, New York City; and five great-grandchildren. A sister, Irene Schweitzer, Wisconsin; and two brothers, Norbert Goetz and Jerome Goetz, also of Wisconsin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in the Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Michael Cournoyer as celebrant.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Aug. 16, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association or the Hobart Rescue Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Shirley E. Mickel

MARYLAND — Shirley E. Mickel, 69, passed away Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at her home.

She was born March 21, 1935, in Oregon Hill, Pa., the daughter of Samuel and Alice (English) Scarborough.

Shirley married Harvey R. Osborne Jr. on Jan. 3, 1953, in Pennsylvania. He predeceased her on March 4, 1976. She then married James (Bucky) Mickel on June 26, 1982, in Maryland. He predeceased her on Aug. 5, 1991.

Shirley was cafeteria aide at Schenevus Central School for 25 years. She was affectionately called mom and then grandma by many of the students.

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed carpentry.

She is survived by her children, Carolyn Rifenbark of Stamford, Ricky Osborne of Maryland, Clifford Osborne of Starr, S.C., Lewellyn Osborne of Schenevus, Wesley Osborne of Maryland, Beverly Ambrosio of Plantation, Fla., and Kevin Long of South Carolina; 25 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alton and Milton Scarborough; and a sister, Bessie Scarborough, all of Pennsylvania. As well as many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at the funeral home, with the Rev. William Robert Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Schenevus, officiating. Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Ardo Keith Thomas

OTEGO — Ardo Keith Thomas of Otego, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at 9:20 a.m. at his residence after a long illness.

He was born on Jan. 1, 1926, in Binghamton, the son of Ardo Simond and Thelma (Cook) Thomas.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in Germany.

He married Jeanne Terry on Jan. 2, 1947, at the Bainbridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wolfe.

He worked at the Jennison electric plant in Bainbridge for 20 years and then was stationed in Oneonta for N.Y.S. Electric and Gas for another 19 years before retiring.

Ardo is survived by his wife, Jeanne Thomas, of Otego; two daughters and a son-in-law, Diane Girdnt of Sidney, and Cindy and Daniel Strauss of Otego; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ardo and Bonnie Thomas of Gainesville, Fla., and Timothy Thomas of Daytona, Fla.; three grandchildren, Dennis Blackman of Sidney, Carey Girdnt of Norwich and Thomas Burzee of Philadelphia, Pa.; a nephew, Walter Raymond of Bainbridge; and two nieces, Katherine of Florida, and Delilah Narvez of Melbourne, Fla.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge with Mrs. Travis of the Baptist Church in Bainbridge officiating.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Claude H. Baldwin

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Claude H. Baldwin Jr., 74, passed away Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Nov. 15, 1929, in Garrattsville, the son of Claude H. and Bertha (Porath) Baldwin.

He attended Cherry Valley Central School and served his country in both the Navy in Hawaii, and the United States Army during the Korean War.

He lived in St. Petersburg, Fla., most of his life and worked as a medical aide for Hospice.

He returned to Cherry Valley in 1984 to take care of his mother.

Survivors include a brother, Elmer Baldwin of Cherry Valley; three sisters, Mabel Vogelien and Elsie Moore of Cherry Valley, and Sally Anthony of Orlando, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold (Pug) and Clarence (Butch), who was killed in Vietnam.

There will be no public calling hours.

There will be a graveside memorial service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in the Cherry Valley Cemetery with Pastor Terry Brant officiating.

Contributions in Mr. Baldwin’s memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Charlotte Springer

ONEONTA — Charlotte E. Springer, 74, of Oneonta passed away on Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at her home.

She was born on April 4, 1930, in Montclair, N.J., the daughter of Elias and Ruth (Slingerland) Erkander.

Charlotte worked to support her four children for many years in a variety of positions. She continued to be involved in many activities and groups even after retirement. She took numerous continuing education classes not only pertaining to her work but also in the arts.

She enjoyed traveling to different places and to see her family and friends.

She addressed her many interests with passion and flair that invigorated and inspired those around her. She "lived the life she loved and loved the life she lived!"

She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and friend.

She is survived by her three daughters, Karen J. Greene of Oneonta, Janet L. and her husband, Timothy A. Mulroy of Franklin, and Karla D. and her husband, James A. Sikora of North Franklin; her son, Richard G. Springer of Kansas; her grandchildren, Sarah Marie Greene of Flagstaff, Ariz., Lauren K. Marks of Boston, and Joshua J. Sikora of North Franklin; a sister and her husband, Ella Mae and Ralph Lerz of Virginia; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in the Oneonta Lutheran Church of the Atonement, with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Oneonta Lutheran Church of the Atonement, the Catskill Area Hospice, or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Helen R. Roe

STAMFORD — Helen R. Roe, 84, of Stamford died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born on May 23, 1920, in Iuka, Miss., the daughter of Clifford and Odie (McAlister) Arnold.

She married Avery Roe on June 7, 1944, in Louisiana. He predeceased her on March 14, 1979.

Mrs. Roe loved to sew, read, tend to her flowers and was well-known for her cooking especially her fried chicken.

She was a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary of Stamford.

Two daughters, Rebecca (Arthur) Stone, Davenport, and Linda Radcliffe, Stamford; three sons, James Avery Roe, Edward T. (Mary) Roe, Richmondville, and Larry J. (Phyllis) Roe, Hobart; 67 grand and great-grandchildren; three brothers, Orlando Arnold, Oklahoma, Robert Arnold, Mississippi, and Ernest and Elizabeth Arnold, Asterance; and one sister, Pauline MaGeary, Arizona, survive.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Lorraine Coscia-Ackerman of the Hobart United Methodist Church officiating.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at the funeral home.

Burial will follow the service at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Stamford Emergency Squad or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Edward D. Stone

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Edward Douglas Stone Jr., 24, of Winter Park, Fla., formerly of Jackson, N.J., died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando, Fla.

He was working as an equipment operator for S.I. Goldman Company, Orlando.

Eddie was born on Feb. 22, 1980, in Long Branch, N.J., and was living in Jackson, prior to moving to Florida 10 months ago.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Mary Beth and Dave Thomas of Treadwell; his father and stepmother, Edward and Debbie Stone of Brick, N.J.; a sister, Caitlin Thomas; and a brother, Michael Thomas, both of Treadwell; and brothers, Thomas and Steven Stone of Brick; his grandparents, Bob and Elaine Kunert of North Ft. Meyers, Fla., and Jesse Thomas of Somerset, Pa.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the family home in Treadwell.

Memorial donations can be made in Edward’s name to Hubbard House, 29 West Miller St., Orlando, FL 32806.

Rosemary Reed

WALTON — Rosemary Reed, 68, of Walton passed away suddenly Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at the Wilson Regional Medical Center, Johnson City.

Mrs. Reed was born in New York City, the daughter of the late Albert and Mary Tewes Meyer.

She lived in Illinois, and then moved to Walton about 25 years ago. She was employed by Walton Bakery as a baker.

She is survived by two daughters, Victoria Oliver and her husband, Philip, of Saugerties, and Mary Ripley of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; a son, Robert Reed of Walton; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Marlene King, of Walton; a brother, Albert Meyer, of Connecticut; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Aaron Reed in 1975.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.

Memorial contributions in Rosemary’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 7, East Syracuse, NY 13057-007. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.

Helen R. Roe

STAMFORD — Helen R. Roe, 84, of Stamford died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Irwin W. Curlis

HARTWICK — Irwin W. Curlis Jr., 88, of Hartwick died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Bassett Hospital.

Born in Jamaica on Sept. 1, 1915, he was the son of Irwin W. Curlis Sr. and Bertha Curlis.

He married Virginia Westhead on April 19, 1941. Virginia passed away on Nov. 30, 1996. Irwin attended the Catskill Hospice Support meetings to help deal with the death of his wife, and there he met Corinne Pollak and found they had many similar interests. Irwin and Corinne were married on Aug. 30, 2003.

Irwin attended Penn State University and received his degree in accounting and business. He is also a graduate of the Wharton School of Business.

One of Irwin’s first jobs was working for the Clark’s as an accountant. He left Cooperstown and moved to Massapequa, where he bought a house and went to work for Anaconda Copper & Brass. He started with them as an auditor and over the years was promoted to comptroller.

He retired in 1972, and moved to Fly Creek, where he and his wife, Virginia owned and operated the Breezy Knoll Bed and Breakfast.

Wanting to keep busy he was voted Fly Creek Town Clerk, then as a volunteer with the Fly Creek Fire Department and Fire Police and the Baseball Hall of Fame.

His favorite pastimes were doing the New York Times crossword puzzle, (which he completed), traveling around the country visiting family and friends and going to services at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Laurens with Corinne was special. Sitting in the back yard watching the wildlife with Corinne, and the occasional movie and dinner pleased him.

Survivors include his loving wife, Corinne; his brother, Warren Curlis, of Salt Lake City. Three children, Pamela Perault of Lumberton, N.C., Jeffrey Curlis of East Patchogue and David Curlis of Argyle; nine grandchildren, Robert, Wendy, Patti, Merry, Michael, David, Michael, Jason and Kristie; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004. There will be a gathering of family and friends from noon to 2 p.m., which will be followed by a service and the spreading of Irwin’s ashes at his favorite place.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irwin’s name to the Hartwick No. 1 Fire Department, Main Street, Hartwick, NY 13348.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Helen R. Avery

DELHI — Helen R. Avery, 91, a longtime Delhi resident, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday evening, Aug. 17, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

The daughter of Lewis and Nellie K. (Beard) Eastburn, she was born Nov. 18, 1912, in Reading, Pa., and married Lars M. Avery, Sept. 9, 1945, at the Second Presbyterian Church, Delhi.

In early life, Helen was employed by the American Casualty (Insurance) Co., Reading, Pa., moving to Delhi at the time of her marriage, where she was employed for a number of years by the Delaware County Highway Department and, subsequently, New York State Department of Transportation, retiring in 1968.

She was a longtime member of the Second Presbyterian Church (United Ministry of Delhi) and the former Delaware Rebekah Lodge.

Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Lars Avery, at home; and an extended family of many friends.

Friends are invited to attend graveside services at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman, her pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, Delhi, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.
