Margaret Crandell

OTEGO — Margaret M. Crandell, 73, passed away Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born on Jan. 21, 1931, in Maryland, the daughter of Virgil and Maude (McAdams) Stranagan.

She married Howard "Jake" Crandell.

Margie was a school bus driver for Unatego Central School for many years. She was a member of the Otego Baptist Church, the Laurens American Legion and the Teachers Union.

She is survived by her sons, Howard "Jake" Crandell Jr. of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Rich Stamets of Otego; her daughters, Linda "Pooh" Perry of Oneonta, and Roslin "Rosie" Cotten of Dunnellon, Fla.; grandchildren, Margo, Toni, Art, Bridget, Richard and Michael; many great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn "Kay" Irons of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard "Jake" Crandell; a daughter, Helen Stamets; two sisters, Jenny and Gertrude; and a brother, Howard.

Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Otego Baptist Church on Friday, Aug. 27, 2004. The funeral service will start at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Craig Merritt, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Crandell to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Millard ’Mel’ Klinegardner

WALTON — Millard "Mel" KlineGardner of Walton and a former resident of LeHigh Acres, Fla., passed away suddenly on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

Millard was born to Mavis and George KlineGardner of Horton, on April 16, 1932.

"Mel" is survived by his wife, Marion, of Walton; his sons, Louis KlineGardner and wife, Eileen, of Walton, Joel KlineGardner of Johnson City, and Dan LaBelle and wife, Peggy, of N. Fort Myers, Fla.; his daughters, Cheryl and husband, Marc Green, Dawn and husband, Jack Whiteside, all of Walton, and Melissa Collins of Afton. Mel’s sisters, Kathleen Basil of Vermont, Stella Martin of Walton, Janet Portz of Roscoe, Gail English of Pennsylvania; brothers, Harvey KlineGardner of Texas, and Tracy Sprague of Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mel was predeceased by two sons, James KlineGardner Sr. of Walton and Gary LaBelle of LeHigh Acres; and a daughter, Donna Becker, also of LeHigh Acres.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at the Northfield Church, Northfield.

Christoph Wilkens

MARYLAND — Christoph F. Wilkens, 83, passed away Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at Albany Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Kohlen, Germany, the son of Martin Sr. and Catherine (VonGlahn) Wilkens.

He married Meta K. Brauer on Oct. 10, 1950, in Grosshain, Germany.

Christoph retired from Hamelines in Oneonta where he worked as a door-to-door ice-cream delivery man.

He was an avid gardener and stamp collector. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles and loved being with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Meta K. Wilkens, of Maryland; a daughter, Marg Fife of Masonville; a son, Fred Wilkens of Oneonta, daughters, Anka Wilkens of Westford and Tina Wilkens of Cherry Valley; a brother, Martin Wilkens Jr. of Maryland, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at the funeral home with the Rev. Ron Fralick, pastor of the Cherry Valley Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Sylvia Cartwright

COBLESKILL — Mrs. Sylvia M. Cartwright, 86, of state Route 10 died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at her residence following a long illness.

Mrs. Cartwright was born on Dec. 8, 1917, in New York City and was the daughter of Peter and Teresa (Frinko) Stavrinos.

Mrs. Cartwright had a long career as a bookkeeper and retired from the Darby and Dames Accounting Firm of New York City. She had graduated from Washington Irving High School.

Mrs. Cartwright was a parishioner of All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Queens where she served as a Sunday school teacher, and more recently a parishioner of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Cobleskill where she was at one time the treasurer and a Sunday school teacher.

She was a ballroom dance instructor and along with her husband and partner, ballroom dance champions, winning many awards. Mrs. Cartwright was active in the Silver Fox Follies.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Philip H. Cartwright, whom she married May 31, 1942, in Queens; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Charles Masick of Cobleskill; a sister, Georgette Surlak of Apopka, Fla.; three grandchildren, Kristen Masick of Minneapolis, Min., Stephanie Masick of Stow, Mass., and First Lt. Erik D. Masick of Cobleskill; and two nieces, Lorraine and Joanne.

She was predeceased by her nephew, Peter Surlak.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Cobleskill with Deacon Barbara Hanstine as celebrant. A calling hour will precede the service at the church. Burial will follow in the Gerald B. H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, St. Christopher’s Place, Cobleskill, NY 12043.

William Cornell

ONEONTA — Another member of our greatest generation has passed. William Cornell, who went from the CCC camps of the Great Depression through the battlefields of Europe with the United States Army, died Aug. 23, 2004, from a stroke.

After the war, Bill returned home to raise a family with his first wife, Evelyn Decker, who predeceased him. He is also predeceased by his second wife, Dora Gay.

His beloved Dorothy Cornell was at his side when he passed away.

Born in Hollywood, Miss., Bill recently spent his winters in Florida and summers in Oneonta.

As a career railroader on the D&H, Bill progressed from brakeman to freight agent to dispatcher. He believed in the railroads and he watched the evolution of the automobile and trucking industry.

He enjoyed cars, books and conversation with his family and friends over good food.

He is loved and missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bill is survived by his three children and their spouses, Wanita and Gilbert Solloway of Oneonta, Gretchen and Eric Brindle of Laurens and Master Sgt. William Cornell II and Marion Cornell of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Cozata Solloway of Connecticut, Jean Segina of Mount Vision, Morgaine Brindle of Saranac Lake, Kyllan Brindle of Laurens, Christian Cornell of Colorado Springs, and Kirsten Cornell of Colorado Springs; two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Jillian Segina of Mount Vision; three cousins, Wilma Harrison of Mount Vision, Robert Cornell of Virginia, and Warren Crandall of Unadilla; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by two brothers, Chatham Cornell and Charles Cornell.

A service to celebrate the life of William Cornell will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Oneonta Fire Department and Rescue Squad, West Oneonta, NY 13861 in loving memory of William Cornell.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Sylvia Cartwright

Richard N. Wisan

ONEONTA — Hartwick Professor Emeritus of Philosophy Richard N. Wisan died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at his home in Oneonta.

Born in Brooklyn on July 10, 1929, he was raised in Manhattan and educated at Horace Mann-Lincoln School.

Dick Wisan had taught at Hartwick since 1968. He was appointed professor in 1973, and he had retired in May 2003. Dick’s life was Hartwick. Not only did he teach there for 35 years, but he served on the Committee on Academic Standards for more than three decades, as well as other committees. He taught various topics in philosophy and mentored hundreds of Hartwick students.

He earned his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Carleton College in 1950, where he also was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his master’s from Harvard University in 1952 and his doctorate from Columbia University in 1955.

Before joining the Hartwick faculty, Dick taught at the University of Florida, the City College of New York, Knox College, UC-Santa Barbara, Washington University in St. Louis and Princeton University.

He was a member of the American Philosophical Association and the American Association of University Professors. He had published articles in the Journal of Philosophy and the Journal of Philosophical Studies.

His interests ranged across all of human endeavour, primarily in European and scientific history, law, naval history, the nature of academia, computer software and hardware, and audio electronics.

His wife, Dr. Winifred Lovell Wisan, a scholar in the history of science, predeceased him.

He is survived by his sister, Wendy (Mrs. Sydney) Baker of New York, and by several nephews and a niece, Laurie (Mrs. Oded) Gafni, Jonathan and Dr. Mitchell Baker, Frederick, William, Henry and Charles Bartlett.

A private service was held in New York City on Aug. 22, 2004.

A memorial will be held on the Hartwick campus during the fall semester.

Carl D. Hutchinson

BAINBRIDGE — Carl D. Hutchinson, 83, of 2533 state Highway 7, Bainbridge, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Bainbridge, the son of the late Hayward H. and Hazel Sargeant Hutchinson.

On Nov. 22, 1942, he married Esther Pickett in Franklin. A lifelong Bainbridge resident, he was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and was a member and past secretary for its vestry. Carl also was a former Sunday school superintendent and a trainer for the church acolytes.

He was a member and a past commander for the Bainbridge American Legion Post No. 806 and was a past commander for the Chenango County American Legion, a member of the Bainbridge Fire Department, a committee member and a past chairman of the General Clinton Canoe Regatta, a member of the card club and a member of the Algonquin Automobile Club. Carl was a member and a past president of the Bainbridge Rotary Club and a host family for Rotary Exchange Students. In 1970-1971, he was district governor for District 717 Rotary International and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.

Mr. Hutchinson was a member of the Bainbridge-Guilford School Board, chaperone for senior school trips for 13 years, and had the Class of 1963 school yearbook dedicated to him. He was involved in VICA through Chenango BOCES.

He served on the Bainbridge Village Board and was a former mayor of Bainbridge. Carl served two years in the United States Navy. Following his return to Bainbridge in 1945, he worked for Davidson Holman Hardware of Bainbridge and the Bendix Corporation in Sidney. He was later employed by the Bainbridge-Guilford School District as superintendent of building and grounds, retiring after 22 years.

For the next eight years, Carl taught Building Trades for the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES, Norwich. He also worked as an electrical inspector for the Atlantic Inland Company of Cortland.

He was an avid camper and traveled extensively to foreign countries. In celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, he and his wife, Esther, received a 1933 Chevrolet from their children.

Carl is survived by his wife of 62 years, Esther Hutchinson of Bainbridge; son, Gary Hutchinson and wife, Nancy, and their children, Robert Meade and wife, Tammy, of Sumnter, N.C. and Colleen Hutchinson of Bainbridge; son, Roger Hutchinson of Bainbridge; daughter, Barbara Stacy and husband, Tim, and their children, Andy, Krystalyn, Alex, Orrin and Jacob of Burlington, N.C.; daughter, Ann Hutchinson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughter, Esther Bidwell and husband, Michael, and their child, Michaela, of Cortland. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.

A brother, Stanley; a niece, Edna French; and a grandson, Quentin Stacy, predeceased him.

Friends may call Friday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with his family in attendance from 5 to 8 p.m.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, from the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, with the Rev. Linda King Watkins, pastor and the Rev. James Ingalls of Sidney officiating.

Burial will be at the family’s convenience in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Bainbridge Fire Department or to the Bainbridge Rotary Club if desired.

Edith Kaluza

PENFIELD — Edith Kaluza of Penfield and formerly of Oneonta died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004.

Edith is survived by her son, Rudi (Bernice) Kaluza; grandchildren, Julie (Tim) O’Grady, Jason (Theresa) Kaluza; great-grandchildren, Meghan, Jacob and Sean; sisters, Brigette Hennemann and Elfriede Neumann.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hubert.

Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home, Egypt location (Route 31), 7501 Pittsford-Palmyra Road, Fairport.

Timothy Mathews

WALTON — Timothy P. Mathews, 36, of Walton passed away suddenly Tuesday evening, Aug. 24, 2004, in the Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton, after being stricken.

Tim was born in Portsmouth, Va., on May 7, 1968, the son of Robert and Karen Brown Mathews Sr.

He was a graduate of Hudson schools and Delhi Tech. He proudly served his country in the Persian Gulf War with the United States Marine Corps as a crewman aboard an amphibian assault vehicle.

He married the former Ruth A. Buchanan on March 2, 1996, in Walton.

He was a veterinary technician, last employed by the Peace Plantation, Walton.

Tim was first and foremost a devoted family man who loved to play with his children, go fishing, watch movies and build model rockets.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth A. Mathews; two children, Brittny Peck and Nicholas Mathews, both at home; his mother, Karen McHenry of North Carolina; one sister, Amy Lusher of Pawling; six brothers, Chris Mathews of Hudson, Scott Mathews of Connecticut, Robert Mathews Jr., Robert Pough, and Todd Pough, all of Hudson, Brian Pough of Pennsylvania; his mother and father-in-law, Richard and Sheila Buchanan, Walton; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends and relatives may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Memorial contributions in Tim’s memory may be made to a trust fund for Brittny and Nicholas to the Delaware National Bank of Delhi, 124 Main St., Delhi. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available at the funeral home.

Ina E. Northrup

WALTON — Ina E. Northrup of Walton, a lifelong resident, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi. She was 70.

Mrs. Northrup was born April 25, 1934, in Walton, to Earl Eugene and Lillian Mae Carroll Barnes.

On Feb. 1, 1953, she married Howard Neal Northrup in Walton. They were subsequently divorced. Mrs. Northrup worked as a proofreader for the Reporter Company in Walton.

She was a member of the Western Square Dancers, the Swing-a-long’s, the Delhi Grad-U-8’s and the Catskill Mountain Squares. She loved to bake and cook. Her family meant the world to her, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards and doing circle word puzzles.

Mrs. Northrup is survived by her daughter, Donna (William) Bundy of Walton; her sons, Marvin (Karen) Northrup of Columbus, N.C., and Walter Northrup of Oneonta; sister, Marjorie (Clifford) Burgin of Bovina Center; her grandchildren, Lisa and Keith Bundy, Megan, Ryan, Kevin, Katelyn, Nicole, Jaclyn and Benjamin Northrup. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family members who died earlier include her sisters Ellen LaZore of Utica and Genevieve Stanton of Walton, and her brother, Edward Barnes of Denbigh, Va.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton, where family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will be in Walton Cemetery.

Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations to the Walton Emergency Squad or the Walton Fire Department in her name would be appreciated.
