H. Dale Palmiter

EDMESTON — H. Dale Palmiter of 10 North St., Edmeston, died suddenly in Cooperstown on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004.

He was born in New Berlin on Jan. 26, 1930, son of H. Fay and Olive Simmons Palmiter. His childhood was spent in the New Berlin and Sherburne areas where he attended schools and graduated from Sherburne Central School.

On Oct. 14, 1950, Dale married Jeannine West, who survives. He is also survived by one daughter, Susan and her husband, Robert Docteur Jr.; a grandson, Marc Docteur of Farmington; one sister, Elizabeth Todd and her husband, Russell of New Berlin; two sisters-in-law, Donna Palmiter of Sherburne, Priscilla Frair and husband, Fred of New Bern, Ga., and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Norman of Sherburne.

Dale retired as postmaster for the United States Postal Service serving the community of Edmeston for many years. He was a Korean War Veteran serving in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. He volunteered for many years and was an early member of the Edmeston Emergency Squad and was an honorary member of the Edmeston Fire Department. He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 311 in Edmeston. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Berlin.

Dale enjoyed spending time with his family and loved to work in his workshop where he created many wood projects.

Funeral services for Dale will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles Taylor officiating.

Burial will take place in the Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Donations may be made to the Saint Andrew’s Church in New Berlin and the Edmeston Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Martha E. Dejonge

SOUTH KORTRIGHT — Martha E. Dejonge, 98, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at O’Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born July 16, 1906, in Roxbury, the daughter of Elmer and Elizabeth (Schuman) Harrington.

She married Herman DeJonge in 1930. He predeceased her on March 13, 1964.

A housewife in her own home she was a member of the South Kortright United Presbyterian Church.

Two sons, Richard H. Dejonge, of New Jersey and Herman Dejonge, of Puerto Rico; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Goldie Craft, of Stamford and several nieces and nephews survive.

Graveside services will take place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31, in Valley View Cemetery, Roses Brook, South Kortright.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Margaret O. Damaschke

ONEONTA — Margaret O. Damaschke, 100, passed away Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

She was born April 14, 1904, in Monsey, the daughter of Albert J. and Cora (Slack) Onderdonk.

Margaret was married to John W. Hooks. He died in 1934. She married Arthur Damaschke on Oct. 1, 1938. He died Aug. 11, 1984.

Margaret spent most of her life in Oneonta. She was a graduate of Oneonta Normal School and Oneonta State Teacher’s College. During her teaching career she taught at Oneonta Plains and Laurens School where she was an elementary teacher. Margaret was also an Associate Professor at State University College at Oneonta until her retirement.

She was a member of the Eastern Star Martha Chapter 116 of Oneonta and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.

Margaret spent her summers at Silliman’s Cove on Goodyear Lake and spent her winters in St. Petersburg Beach-Treasure Island. Margaret was an avid bridge player and enjoyed watching television.

Her son, John W. Hooks and his wife, Martha of Towson, Md.; her sister-in-law, Jane P. Onderdonk of Hillsdale, N.J.; her grandson, Thomas J. Hooks of Hampstead, Md., and her great-granddaughter, Rebecca Leigh Hooks of New Windsor, Md., survive her.

Her grandson, John W. Hooks III predeceased her in 1992.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at the Bookhout Funeral Home. 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, Pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home on Monday, Aug. 30. The Eastern Star, Martha Chapter 116, will meet at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. for a service.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in Margaret’s memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Alana L. Manley

COOPERSTOWN — Alana L. Manley, 52, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004.

Beloved daughter, sister, and niece, Alana was born at Fox Hospital, Oneonta on Jan. 18, 1952.

A kind and gentle soul, she spent much of her youth growing up in Hartwick. Alana loved animals, especially cats and always had a ready smile and great sense of humor.

Surviving are her parents, Lloyd and Katherine Manley of Cooperstown; three sisters, Sandra Manley of Cooperstown, Anna Buell and her husband Daniel, and their children Adam and Katherine of New Berlin; Marilyn Tero and her husband David of Mohawk, and a paternal aunt, Erwina Edgett of Hartwick.

Alana was always surrounded by people who truly cared for her and loved her, and even more so during the past few years as her health declined.

The family expresses sincere appreciation and special recognition to the staff of Broome Developmental Center in Binghamton for their tender care and devotion.

Alana was pure of heart and easily won over anyone who met her. Though Alana’s physical presence will be dearly missed, her blessed spirit and loving memory will remain forever cherished in the hearts and minds of all who knew her.

Friends may call from 3 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31, in Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick with the Rev. Douglas Burleigh, chaplain at M.I. Bassett Hospital officiating.

Edith Kaluza

PENFIELD — Edith Kaluza of Penfield, and formerly of Oneonta, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004.

Edith is survived by her son, Rudi (Bernice) Kaluza; grandchildren, Julie (Tim) O’Grady, Jason (Theresa) Kaluza; great-grandchildren, Meghan, Jacob and Sean; sisters, Brigette Hennemann and Elfriede Neumann.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hubert.

Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home, Egypt location (Route 31), 7501 Pittsford-Palmyra Road, Fairport.

Esther L. Ward

CARLISLE — Mrs. Esther L. Ward, 94, formerly of Carlisle, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at The Meadows Nursing Home, Middlefield, where she had been a resident for the past year.

Mrs. Ward was born May 26, 1910, in Turlock, Calif., the daughter of Frederick and Frieda (Whittle) Knochenmus.

Mrs. Ward was a homemaker all her life and enjoyed crocheting.

She resided primarily in Carlisle and moved to Westville in 1995.

Survivors include three daughters, Frieda Scanlon of Westville, Florence White of Pasadena, Fla., and Fannie Bartholomew of Middleburgh; a son, William Ward; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ward was predeceased by her husband, Luman S. Ward, who died Nov. 7, 1983; two sons, Warren and Winston Ward; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister and four brothers.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. Bill Wilson officiating. A calling hour will be held before the service. Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Rhoda Carpenter

NEW BERLIN — Rhoda V. Carpenter, 87, of West Hill died on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at the Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born in Scranton, Pa. on Feb. 16, 1917, and attended schools in the area, graduating from Benton High School.

On June 19, 1937, she married Arthur (Pat) Carpenter in Glenburn, Pa.

Rhoda was a charter member of the Christian Missionary Alliance in Yorktown.

She loved everyone and was loved by all. Her presence will always remain with us.

Besides her husband of 67 years, she leaves one son, John Carpenter of Stormville; two daughters, Mrs. (William) Patricia Conklin of Peekskill and Rhoda S. Carpenter of Binghamton; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. (Donald) Vera Smith of Bath and Mrs. Marjorie DeMuth of North Carolina.

The funeral service for Rhoda will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin with Pastor Ernest Brodie of the Robertsville Bible Church in Morganville, N.J., officiating.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, Monday, Aug. 30, 2004.

The burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Hazel G. Cornell

BAINBRIDGE — Hazel G. Cornell, 86, of Bainbridge passed away Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Norwich.

She was born Aug. 18, 1918, daughter of the late Frederick S. and Gertrude Bowker Howe in Bainbridge.

Hazel married Harold Cornell on April 6, 1937, in Sidney. He predeceased her on Nov. 3, 2003.

She is survived by her daughter, Florence Spangenburg, Sidney; two granddaughters, Kattie and Joseph Flanagin, Bainbridge, and Cherie Naab, Richmond, Va.; two grandsons, Vance and Kelly Jones, West Plains, Mo., and Harold and Kathy Jones, and their two children, Texas; six additional great-grandchildren, Joseph and Caitlyn Flanagin, Debbie Naab, Logan, Lesley and Danielle Jones; and one sister, Gertrude Baines, San Jose, Calif.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Floyd, Leland, Theo and Homer Howe; and two sisters, Dorothy Wheat and Eloise Pell.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, from C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Robert Goldenberg, pastor of the Circle Drive Alliance Church in Sidney, officiating.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Valley View Manor Nursing Home Activities Fund, 40 Park St., Norwich, NY 13815.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers, Inc. Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Karen E. Sawyer

ONEONTA — Karen E. Sawyer, 51, passed away Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 17, 1952, in Norwich, the daughter of George and Elsie (Weaver) Sawyer.

Karen was a graduate of New Berlin High School. For the past seven years she was employed at Wal-Mart in Oneonta as a sales associate.

She loved gardening, flower arranging and especially enjoyed boating and fishing on Otsego Lake.

She is survived by her companion of 15 years, John Ehrhard of Oneonta; her brothers and sisters, Gen and her husband, George Stanley, of DeRuyter, Virginia Cook of Pitcher, Don Sawyer Sr. of Mohawk, the Rev. Sam and his wife, Gail Sawyer, of Sun City West, Ariz., Nancy Devine of Conklin, Dave and his wife, Charlotte Sawyer, of Olcott, Judy and her husband, Mark Enman, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Peg and her husband, Brian Williams, of Wilmington, N.C.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004. The memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. with Karen’s brother, the Rev. Sam Sawyer, officiating.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Karen to the American Diabetes Association, 356 N. Midler Ave., Syracuse, NY 13206.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Laverne M. Taylor

WALTON — Laverne M. Taylor of Walton, a lifelong Delaware County resident, died on Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton. He was 70.

Mr. Taylor was born on July 24, 1934, in Sidney Center, to William and Cora Lewis Taylor.

On Aug. 25, 1951, he married Isabel Gransbury at the Congregational Church parsonage in Walton.

He was a self-employed landscaper. He will be remembered for his willingness to help anyone who needed it, and he was a friend to everybody.

He is survived by his wife, Isabel, at home in Walton; his brother, Edward Taylor; his stepbrothers, John and James Winfield; his sisters, Shirley and Charlotte; and stepsisters, Ella and Jean Marie.

He was predeceased by a brother, Donald, and stepsister, Mary Lou Johnson.

Service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment in Walton Cemetery.

Donations to the Walton Emergency Squad in his name would be appreciated.

Ida Mae Decker

BLOOMVILLE — Ida Mae Decker, 64, a longtime Bloomville resident, passed away peacefully Sunday night, Aug. 29, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

The daughter of Francis D. and Evelyn I. (Hitt) Quackenbush Sr., she was born Oct. 5, 1939, in Fergusonville, received her education at South Kortright Central School and married William Kiel in 1956. That marriage ended in divorce, and she later married Don. K. Decker on March 11, 1972, a 24-year union until his death March 29, 1996.

In earlier years, Ida Mae co-owned and operated the former Bloomville Diner with her sister, Pat, and was subsequently employed for 29 years at Audiosears Corp., Stamford, until her recent decline in health.

A talented cook, she enjoyed preparing new and different meals and was also proud of her flower garden.

Surviving are a son, Michael (Debra) Kiel, of North Blenheim; two grandsons, Michael C. (Melissa) Kiel of Stamford and Justin Kiel of Middleburgh; her mother, Evelyn Quackenbush, and five sisters, Patricia (Jim) LaRocque, Charlene Pickett, Vickie (David) Phelps, Penny Quackenbush (Ray Scofield), all of Bloomville, and Lorraine (Glenn) Rosa of Sidney Center; a brother, Francis (Mary) Quackenbush Jr. of Camden, Tenn.; her close friend and companion, Bill Wright, of Davenport; two uncles, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased in 1973 by her daughter, Billie Mae Kiel.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bloomville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Lenz officiating, with burial following in the Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bloomville Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Jonathan Batthany

DELHI — Jonathan A. "Little Jon" Batthany, 19, of Delhi died early Monday morning, Aug. 30, 2004, the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in the town of Delhi.

The son of Michael A. and Mary Jane (Paul) Batthany, he was born Oct. 22, 1984, in Stamford, attended Delaware Academy and received his GED from BOCES, having a keen interest in carpentry, framing, woodworking and auto mechanics.

A seven-year Delhi resident, Jon previously lived in South Kortright.

Surviving are his mother of Delhi, his father of South Kortright; a sister, Sarah Batthany, and two brothers, Nathaniel and Christian Batthany, all of Delhi; his grandmother, Martha Jane Paul of Cutchogue; a niece and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends are invited to call 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. David Wheatley.

Memorial contributions may be made to Delhi Fire Department EMS.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Noreen E. Wells

UNADILLA — Noreen E. Wells, 61, of Unadilla passed on to the Lord, Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, surrounded by her loving family.

She was retired from Amphenol where she had worked for 22 years. She loved crafts, crocheting and chocolates.

Noreen is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob" Wells; son, Doug Wells and Kate Andrews of Unadilla; stepchildren, Linda and Mike Gargon of St. Augustine, Fla., John Wells of Wappingers Falls and Sue Crissel of Sidney; four stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. She also leaves behind sisters, Connie and Stephen Gates of Gilbertsville and Betty White and family of Meridale, and many neighbors and friends, as well as her beloved dog, Tammi.

She was predeceased by her father, Ichabod Cooke, and brother, David Cooke, both of Unadilla.

Memorial services will be private.
