Adelbert Lockwood

COBLESKILL — Mr. Adelbert J. Lockwood, 82, of Colonial Village, Cobleskill, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at his residence after being stricken suddenly.

Mr. Lockwood was born Sept. 6, 1921, in Hobart, a son of Delbert and Olie (Hosier) Lockwood. He had resided in Colonial Village for the past three years, having previously lived in Howes Cave.

Adelbert was educated in the Hobart schoolhouse. He was a dairy farmer for most of his life, working for farms in the area before owning his own dairy farm on state Route 7 in the town of Cobleskill.

His hobbies included fishing and "putter-work’’ around his house.

He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II and stationed in Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1943.

Mr. Lockwood was married to Mildred (Hudson) Lockwood on July 4, 1952, until her death on April 15, 1998.

Survivors include his children, Jack Lockwood of Howes Cave, Shirley Yerdon of Cherry Valley, Darlene Gardner of Cobleskill, Nancy Slider of Florida, Christopher Lockwood of Howes Cave and Neil Lockwood of Howes Cave; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lockwood was predeceased by one son, Frederick Lockwood, in 1960; one brother, Jim Lockwood; one sister, Hilda Davis; and grandchildren, Adam Yerdon, Kyle Lockwood and Leslie Lockwood.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St., Schoharie.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at Cobleskill Rural Cemetery, Hillview Section, with the Rev. Elizabeth J. Stewart, pastor of the Central Bridge United Methodist Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Lockwood to the Cobleskill Fire Department Rescue Squad, State Route 7, Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Agnes T. Garza

DENVER — Agnes T. Garza, 74, passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

Agnes was born April 14, 1930, in Queens, the daughter of Theresa Allen and Daniel P. Lyons.

She married Frank E. Garza on June 13, 1953, in Elmhurst. He died March 9, 1990.

She graduated from Newton High School. She was a school bus driver in Northport, Long Island, and a homemaker. Agnes moved to Denver in 1981 from Northport and was very active at the Senior Dining Center in Margaretville.

Agnes was an avid New York Mets fan and enjoyed the company of her pets, Fred and Gibby.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville.

Agnes is survived by one daughter, Irene and son-in-law, James, Hackworth, Orlando, Fla.; two sons, Frank Garza, Baton Rouge, La., and Daniel E. Garza and Kimberly Roe, Roxbury; grandchildren, Colin Hackworth, Austin Roe and Erin Garza; three brothers, John Lyons, Pennsylvania, James Lyons, Maryland, and Vincent Lyons, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt as celebrant. Burial will be in Bedell Cemetery, Fleischmanns.

Contributions in Agnes T. Garza’s memory to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Ambulance Fund or to Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Barbara H. Moore

SIDNEY — Barbara H. Moore, 79, of 8 Concord St., Sidney, passed away Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Feb. 18, 1925, in Walton, the daughter of the late Jay and Marie Howell Hammond.

She was married to William Moore, who predeceased her on Oct. 30, 2002.

Barbara was a retired executive secretary for the E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney for several years.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Christine and Anthony Bianco of Howard Beach, and Monica Dare of Vancouver, Canada; two sons, Peter DeSalvo of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jeffrey DeSalvo of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one brother, Edward Hammond of Walton; stepson, Robert Dahl of Unadilla; stepdaughter, Sondra Dahl of Elmira; granddaughter, Karen Bianco-Faria of Howard Beach; two great-granddaughters, Jordan and Kyla Faria of Howard Beach; six stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Four brothers, Raymond, Douglas, William and Albert Hammond; and three sisters, Alice Turner, Katherine MacRabie and Dorotha Cowan, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Friends are invited to call from 11 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the services at 1 p.m.

Burial will be at the family’s convenience in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad if desired.

Grace E. Lewis

EAST BRANCH — Grace E. Lewis, 87, of East Branch passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at South Kortright Adult Home, South Kortright.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1917, in Carbondale, Pa., the daughter of Luther and Emma (Singley) Conklin.

She married Lowell E. Lewis on Oct. 15, 1939, in Binghamton. He predeceased her on Sept. 1, 2003.

Grace was co-owner of the Red Carpet Inn and Restaurant, Stamford.

She was a member of Stamford Presbyterian Church. She was an avid golfer and was a member of the Stamford Golf Club. She enjoyed sewing and was an accomplished seamstress.

Grace is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, L. Gary and Ginger Lewis, East Branch; daughter, Sharon Garrett, Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren, Corey and Leigh Lewis, Richard and Beth Rausch, William, Gregory and Robert Zorella; one sister, June Perry, Lakeland, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son-in-law, Mike Garrett, and two brothers, Frank and Herbert Conklin.

Burial will be in East Branch Cemetery, East Branch.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Sonja C. Baylis

ANDES — Sonja C. Baylis, 79, of Andes and Sebastian, Fla., passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at her residence in Sebastian.

She was born April 29, 1925, in Brooklyn, the daughter of George Rosenvold and Sarah Andersen.

She married Donald Baylis on May 14, 1949, in Huntington, Long Island.

Sonja was a homemaker and was a member of the historical society in Andes. She moved to Andes from Huntington in 1976. She has wintered in Florida for 21 years. She had previously spent 21 years in Norway.

She enjoyed skiing and baking.

Sonja is survived by her husband of 55 years, Donald Baylis of Andes and Sebastian; two daughters, Carol Swett of Andes and Jane Sotera of Cumming, Ga.; one brother, George Rosenvold of Keesville; two grandchildren, Jason Swett of Balston Spa and Jeffrey Swett of Andes; one great-grandchild, Olivia Balcom of New Kingston; one nephew and three nieces.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at the Andes United Methodist Church, Andes, with Pastor Gerald Norris officiating.

Committal service will be held in Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Contributions in Sonja C. Baylis’ memory to the V.N.A. Hospice, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Jacob Tait

TERRY CLOVE — Jacob Tait died on Sept. 2, 2004, at Albany Medical Hospital from complications following surgery.

He was a lifelong resident of Terry Clove where he operated a dairy farm for many years.

Jake was proud of his Indian heritage, his many accomplishments and his large family of friends.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois Thompson Tait; and their four children and families, Steven Tait and wife, Cynthia, of DeLancey, Dennis Tait and wife, Norah, of Sugar Hill, Ga., Susan Butler and husband, Ronald, of Stamford, Russell Tait of DeLancey; many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Delhi Community Church on Route 10, two miles out of Delhi.

Arrangements are by Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville.

Deborah Liddle

SIDNEY — Deborah (Murphy) Liddle, 42, of Sidney passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at her home.

She was born Feb. 10, 1962, daughter of James Murphy and Catherine "Kitty" Miller in Newark, N.J.

Deb graduated from Afton Central School.

She married James Liddle on Feb. 14, 2000, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Deb had worked at The Hospital in Sidney for many years, and also Germond Chiropractic in Bainbridge and David A. Picinich Chiropractor of Oneonta as an office administrator.

She attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Sidney. Deb enjoyed staying home reading, playing with her cat and taking care of her plants. She was a photography buff and liked to take pictures of sunsets. Deb was also a fan of NASCAR and the Washington Redskins.

She is survived by her husband, James Liddle, Sidney; daughter, Amanda Benedict, Sidney; mother, Kitty Murphy, Sidney; stepdaughter, Sydney Ritchie-Liddle, Valley Falls; brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Irene Murphy, Unadilla; sister, Diane Wenneis, Hopatcong, N.J.; sister-in-law, Pansy Gray, Sunbury, Pa.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, James Murphy, and brother, Daniel Gray.

A celebration of Deb’s life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Michael Shank, vicar of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Sidney, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in Deborah’s name to the National Psoriasis Foundation, 660 SW 92nd Ave., Suite 300, Portland, OR 97223 or The Breast Cancer Fund, 2107 O’Farrell St., San Francisco, CA 94115.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Mary M. Siciliano

ANDES — Mary M. Siciliano, 58, of Andes passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, Sept. 6, 2004, at her home, following a brief illness.

The daughter of Frank A. and Madeline B. (Nine) Mohler, she was born Sept. 23, 1945, in Oceanport, N.J.

A former New Jersey resident, Mary moved to Andes four years ago and was employed as an animal care assistant at the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, Delhi, until her recent illness. She will be remembered as an incredible animal lover, extremely dedicated to animal welfare, her life revolving around her pets and their comfort.

In addition to their care, her enjoyment included hiking with her dogs, many of which she fostered, adopting several.

There are no close family survivors, though Mary will be missed and mourned by her friends and associates at the HSCDC and other animal lovers.

At Mary’s request, there is no funeral service; however, memorial contributions to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, PO Box 88, or Catskill Area Hospice, 116 Main St., Delhi, NY 13753 will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Nancy Harris

MONTREAL — Nancy (nee) Sharko Harris of Montreal, Quebec, passed away at her home Monday, Sept. 6, 2004.

Her greatest enjoyments in life were her family and friends.

Nancy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Harris; and her parents, Paulina and Joseph Sharko.

She is survived by her sister, Olga; brother, Alex Sharko; and her three sons, Bill (Linda) and their children, Evan, Kelsey, Lauren and Meghan; Wayne, and Ward (Robyn) and their children, Connor and Tylor.

She will be resting at Blythe Bernier Funeral Home, 940 Ogilvy Ave. (corner Stuart). Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004. Funeral service at 10 a.m. at St. Peter & St. Paul Cathedral, 1151 Champlain St., Friday, Sept. 10, 2004. Thence to Hawthorn Dale Cemetery.

Laura G. Mabey

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Laura G. (Wightman) Mabey, 78, of Manchester died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, in the Hanover Hill Healthcare Center in Manchester.

Mrs. Mabey was born in Maryland, N.Y., on Sept. 2, 1926, a daughter of the late Daniel and Lillian Mae (Blenco) Wightman.

She was a resident of Manchester since 2002, formerly living in Portsmouth, N.H., and Westfield, Mass., for nearly 30 years.

She was employed as an office manager for Fred Gillan and Emery Crete in Portsmouth. She volunteered and contributed to the AIDS Society of Portsmouth.

She is survived by her son, Robert G. Mabey of Derry, N.H.; one sister, Leah Dante of Cobleskill; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Velma Moster of Milford.

There are no calling hours. Following cremation, Mrs. Mabey will be buried in the Wightman Estate family plot.

The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry, is handling the arrangements.

John ’Jack’ Maier

ONEONTA — John F. "Jack" Maier, 80, of Oneonta passed away on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

Jack is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wilma Knipper Maier; his daughters, Pamela Stover of Rochester, Debora Maier of Rochester, and Karen (Louis) Vagliardo of Oneonta; his grandsons, John D’Augustino, Jason and Jared Vagliardo.

Jack was a 1942 graduate of Aquinas Institute in Rochester and attended the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., for one year. He graduated from the University of Rochester with a BA in science and math in 1948. In 1950, he received his master’s degree from Syracuse University.

He then taught at Liverpool Central Elementary School, and West Chester State Teacher’s College in West Chester, Pa. In 1956, Jack joined the staff at SUNY Oneonta and taught physics and astronomy until he retired in 1985.

He was very active after his retirement, giving planetarium shows to various groups of students of local elementary and high schools, and scout troops. His Christmas show ran for more than 30 years.

During his teaching career he received the NSF (National Science Foundation) award in radiation at Harvard University Medical School in 1959. He also had publications in the Science Teacher’s Bulletin and the Welsh Scientific Digest.

Jack served in the United States Navy during World War II, where he specialized in chemical warfare research and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant JG.

He was a member of the American Astronomical Society, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and Phi Delta Kappa. He was a longstanding member of the Rotary Club, the Elks Club and the American Legion Post 259. He also was a member of the Polish American Citizens Club of Rochester.

It was Jack’s wish that his remains be donated to Albany Medical College for the furtherance of medical research.

His cremated remains will be scattered at Cape Cod Bay at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oneonta American Legion Post 259, 279 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

George S. Webster

SOUTH VALLEY — Mr. George Stanley Webster Jr., 57, passed away Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at home, in the home he so proudly built, in the midst of his loving family.

He will be so dearly missed by his family and friends.

He was born April 25, 1947, in Cooperstown, the son of George S. and Gertrude (Gage) Webster Sr.

He married Dale Christman on July 10, 1971, in Cherry Valley.

George lived in South Valley his entire life. He built a house just a short distance from his parents on third-generation-owned land.

He was a quiet man with a great presence. He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved riding his four-wheeler and spending hours at the cabin he built with his father and brothers.

His greatest joy was taking his grandchildren, Sarah and Dylan, for four-wheeler rides and picking blackberries.

He was so happy when his second grandson, Sean, was born. His daughter gave him the boys he never had but dearly wanted.

He was in the labor union for many years and was a mason in Local 2 for greater than 30 years. He was a proud member of the B A C for 37 years. He was very proud of his tile expertise, and many people relied on him for guidance.

George was a Vietnam veteran serving from 1965-1966. He attended Cherry Valley School and was a member of the First Christian Church, South Valley.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Dale Christman Webster; daughter, Heather and son-in-law Rob Webster; son-in-law, Jim Mancuso; grandchildren, Sarah Mancuso, Dylan and Sean Webster; brothers, John, Barry and wife, Launda; sisters, Denny and Joan Hoke, Roger and Bevy Erway, Narine Lundy and her friend, Mike Herbert; brother-in-law, Bud Lundy, Shirley Webster; sisters-in-law, Pam and Tim Hotaling, Merri and Tom Darling, Liz Christman; brothers-in-law, Alan and Melinda Christman, Bruce Christman; dear friends, Tom and Sharon Parslow; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two daughters, Dawn and Melissa Webster; his parents, Stanley and Gertie; and his dear friend, Van Johnson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with Pastor Terence Brant of the First Christian Church of South Valley, officiating.

Calling hours will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8 at the funeral home.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
