Langdon Wright

COOPERSTOWN — Langdon ("Lanny") Goddard Wright, 61, of Oaksville, an associate professor of history with the Cooperstown Graduate Program, died unexpectedly on Friday afternoon, Sept. 10, 2004, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Lanny was born on May 19, 1943, at Children’s Hospital in Boston, Mass., the son of John Goddard and Virginia (Benedict) Wright.

Raised in Wellesley, Mass., he graduated from Harvard University in 1963. He then served in the United States Army for 2 ½ years during the Vietnam era and later in the Army Reserves.

In 1974, he came to the Cooperstown Graduate Program (CGP) as a new Ph.D. from Cornell University. As Lanny liked to say, "I attended Harvard and was educated at Cornell." As an associate professor of history, he seemed to know absolutely everything about American history because of his voracious reading habits. He could "turbo skim" a book in two hours with the assistance of his enormous mug of strong, black Louisiana coffee.

It was through the CGP that he met his future wife, Emily Marie Leake. As a student, Emily was not particularly fond of Lanny, but Bruce Buckley thought they would make a great couple and played matchmaker, "fixing them up" at a professional conference. They were married a year later on Sept. 25, 1976, in a ceremony in Bump Tavern at The Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown.

His office at the Cooperstown Graduate Program was legendary — a veritable treasure trove of history books, journals and bibliographic references. It was also a facilities manager’s nightmare — filled with many volumes, papers, card files, an old typewriter and a large collection of armadillos. Each year the folks from SUNY Oneonta "wrote him up" as a fire hazard and asked him to make his office less congested.

Lanny’s contributions to the CGP went well beyond his amazing knowledge of history. He holds a special place in the folklore of the CGP. Beginning with the Welcome Picnic at Brookwood Gardens, Lanny created and sustained a number of CGP traditions. Each fall students were treated to the traditional "Boston Death March" along the Freedom Trail and the Jack Kerouac Tour of Boston around Harvard. This field trip was the first long trip of the CGP experience and always started the year on a positive note.

As the longtime director of admissions, Lanny met with dozens of prospective students and worked with current students to organize Interview Weekend.

Lanny loved to cook and loved good food. His piccadillo and his five-cheese lasagna, prepared for the Thursday night faculty dinners, were legendary. His connoisseurship of hot sauce was also well-known. Whenever he and his wife, Emily, traveled down the East Coast to visit family, they had regular stops at barbecue joints. He was an authority on the best places to eat in any state east of the Mississippi, Dreamland Barbecue in Tuscaloosa being a particular favorite.

Lanny was a good and decent man who loved great books and fine food and cared deeply about his students, his cats and of course his dear wife, Emily. He was a vital part of the fabric of the CGP and touched the lives of a large proportion of the 780 alumni, teaching them how to read and interpret history. This is his lasting legacy, and he will be greatly missed. As Lanny always said, sometimes life is just "wretched."

Lanny is survived by his wife of 28 years, Emily, of Oaksville; his sister, Nancy Wright of Naples, Fla.; and his mother-in-law, Louise Leake of Baton Rouge, La.

A memorial service is being planned and will be held at The Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown at a future date.

Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial gifts in Lanny’s memory to: College at Oneonta Foundation — Cooperstown Graduate Program Endowment, PO Box 800, Cooperstown, NY 13326. Please write in the memo: "In memory of Lanny Wright."

Arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth, funeral directors, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown.
