She went to Oneonta High School and received her master’s in education from SUNY Albany in 1965. Virginia taught English at Amsterdam High School for more than 30 years prior to her retirement in 1999.

She enjoyed travel and was a die-hard Yankee fan.

Her mother, Madeline Shaver, died in July.

Survivors include her nephew, David Shaver, and his wife, Rosemary, of Delmar; and her niece, Lisa S. Radley, and her husband, Bill, of Clifton Park; grandnieces and nephews, Jack and Samuel Radley, Brendon, Brittni, Ashleigh and Gabrielle Shaver. She is survived by her uncle, Sam Stockin, of Laurens; as well as several cousins.

She was predeceased also by her brother, Robert R. Shaver, in 1985.

He was born June 13, 1940, the son of Reford and Hazel (Yearly) Furgerson.

Linda Drotar

WEST ONEONTA — Linda One Dove Drotar, 56, of West Oneonta passed away in her home Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, from cancer.

Linda was eldest of four children born to Georgianna and Leslie Pierce. Linda grew up in Massachusetts, where at 17 she was accepted into an accelerated nursing school program. She was the youngest person admitted to this program.

She put her career on hold to raise her family of three children. She lived all over the country including Hawaii (which she dearly loved).

In 1979, she ran the first-ever residential home for mentally-challenged adults in Lyons, Neb. She then moved to New York to live closer to her parents.

From 1981-1982, she became the first woman to hold the position of counselor at Camp Brace in Masonville.

In 1983, she began the domestic-violence program in Norwich through Catholic Charities. In 1984, she returned to nursing school to finish obtaining her LPN license and graduated in 1985 at the top of her class.

Linda was forced to retire from nursing by 1990 because of the severe advancement of osteoarthritis and degenerative disk disease in her spine. Throughout this time and up until the end, she taught several people who sought her for her wisdom and knowledge. These people became trusted and valued friends not only to One Dove, but also her family.

In 1996, she became co-parent to her granddaughter, Cheyenne Skye Gorton, whom she loved more than life itself. She was invaluable and unwavering in her support for her daughter in helping her become the first woman in the family to obtain a bachelor’s degree.

There was not a person she met whom she didn’t touch. Her family and friends will forever remember her as a woman of great compassion, having a love for all living beings, an overwhelming love and concern for Mother Earth, and above all, love for her family.

She is survived by her parents, Leslie and Lucille Pierce; her sister, Judy Pierce; daughter, Donna Gorton; sons, Michael and Sam Melendrez; granddaughter, Cheyenne Gorton; nephews, Jordan and Joshua Pestana; her aunt, Laura Wood; and uncle, Gary Pierce.

We will all miss her so much, but are glad that she is no longer in pain and is free at last from the body that held her back from all the places and things that she loved. May she walk in peace at last.

A ceremony celebrating her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at her home for close family and friends.

Donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice in her name.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.
