James R. Ferguson

SOUTH EDMESTON — James (Fergie) R. Ferguson, 76, of South Edmeston, where he resided for many years with his companion, Leta Tyler, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in Oneonta.

He was born July 10, 1928, in Colchester, the son of James and Mary Ferguson. He spent his childhood in Delaware County.

He was predeceased by one sister and two brothers.

James is survived by his first cousin, Shirley and her husband, Lloyd Stone of Otego; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was a dairy farmer for Welch’s Livestock Market for 50-plus years.

He was an avid bowler and member of the American Bowling Association and Tri County Singles Club of Oneonta. He was also a member of the Tri-Town Dance Club of Sidney.

Jimmy was known for his willingness to help his fellow man. He loved to follow local area bands where he could enjoy country music and dance the "two-step."

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Following the funeral service, friends and family members are invited to the home of David and Angel Ferguson, 48½ Broadway, Oneonta, for a celebration of Jimmy’s life.

The Rev. Stephen Reese of the Columbus Community Church, Columbus, will be officiating.

Interment will be in the South Brookfield Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, preceding the funeral at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Many thanks go to family members Patty Simmons of Sidney and David and Angel Ferguson of Oneonta for helping Jimmy during the last months of his life.

The family would like to extend special thanks to all of the staff members by requesting that memorial donations may be made to the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Edward R. Steck

CROTON-ON-HUDSON — Edward R. Steck, 87, of the Springvale Inn, Croton-On-Hudson, and formerly of Otego and Bovina Center, died Jan. 14, 2004, at Phelps Memorial Hospital, Sleepy Hollow, Westchester.

Edward was predeceased by his wife, Mildred A. Steck.

Edward was cremated Jan. 15, 2004, through Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, Montrose, at Ferncliff Crematory, Hartsdale.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at Saint James’ Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware Drive, where the Stecks were former active parishioners. The Rev. Jason A. Catania will officiate.

The family will receive friends after the church service at a reception in the Parish Hall.

Helena H. Gilbert

GILBERTSVILLE — Memorial services for Helena Horton Gilbert, who passed away July 31, 2004, will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004.

She had lived in Gilbertsville since the 1940s and taught English to a generation of students at Gilbertsville Central School.

By the time of her 100th birthday last November, she was the oldest resident of the village.

Memorial donations may be made to Pathfinder Village Foundation, 3 Chenango Road, Edmeston, NY 13335.

Richard L. Dibble

HARDIN, Ky. — Richard Lynn Dibble, 59, of Hardin, Ky., and formerly of Michigan, passed away Sept. 18, 2004, at 11:05 p.m., at the Lourdes Hospital, Paducah, Ky.

He was of the Jehovah’s Witnesses faith. He was a hospital maintenance worker.

Richard is survived by his father, Clarence Dibble, Sidney; two sons, Richard Dibble, Bainbridge, and Robert D. Dibble, New York state; three daughters, Robin Lynn Norwood, Hardin, Ky., Penny L. Dibble, Unadilla, and Jeannette M. Coffey, Unadilla; one sister, Sandy Frewart, Sidney; and 12 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his mother, Winifred Mills Dibble.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in the McClure Cemetery, McClure. Richard was cremated.

Funeral Director Services of Symsonia, Ky., was in charge of arrangements.

Wilma J. Dyer

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Wilma J. Dyer, 63, of Toddsville, died early Wednesday morning, Sept. 22, 2004, at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse.

She was born on May 21, 1941, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, a daughter of Orlando and Nellie Mary (Page) Bridger.

She married William F. Higgins on July 12, 1958, in Cooperstown. He died on Sept. 12, 1974. She then married Roland G. Dyer on April 9, 1977, in Roseboom.

A lifelong resident, Wilma was raised in Cooperstown and attended Cooperstown Central School. Throughout the years she was employed as a waitress and a cook by several restaurants in Cooperstown, including The Short Stop Restaurant and The Cooperstown Diner, which she at one time owned and operated. She was also employed as a sales clerk and cashier by numerous other Cooperstown businesses, including McEwan Hardware, Smalley’s Theater, Farm and Home and, for the past six years, the Cooperstown General Store. She also served at one time as a matron at the Otsego County Jail, and was an assistant teacher for the Head Start program.

A member of the Community Bible Chapel in Toddsville, Wilma enjoyed singing and collecting angel figurines. She was also fond of painting and other craft work.

Wilma is survived by her husband of 27 years, Roland G. Dyer, of Toddsville; two sons, Randy W. Higgins of Roseboom, and Scott A. Higgins and his wife, Mary, of Bristow, Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Laura R. Grup, and her husband, Bill, of Richfield Springs; seven grandchildren, April and Eliza Higgins, Kristen and Kyle Grup, and Nicole, Scott Jr., and Jacob Higgins; two great-grandsons, Adrian and Nicolas Higgins; eight sisters, Mrs. Hilda Pomeroy of Fulton, Mrs. Elizabeth O’Brien and Mrs. Mildred Jennings and her husband, Gerald, all of Cooperstown, Mrs. Cora Petrucco of Cortland, Mrs. Wanda Laymon and Mrs. Lois Smith and her husband, Eugene, all of Toddsville, Mrs. Evelyn Gray and her husband, Gordon, of Pierstown, and Joan Weiner of Cherry Valley; two brothers, Herman Bridger and his wife, Ida Mae, of Cooperstown, and David Bridger and his wife, Marietta, of Roseboom; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rosalina Bridger of Cooperstown, and Mrs. Blanche (Teny) Bridger of Virginia; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and many good friends.

In addition to her first husband; she was predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Gladys Welch; and two brothers, Frederick Bridger and Chester O. ("Chet") Bridger.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Sept. 26, 2004, at the Community Bible Chapel, 577 Greenough Road, Toddsville, with the Rev. James W. Pollock, associate pastor, officiating. The Service of Committal and Burial will follow in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday evening, Sept. 25, 2004, when Wilma’s family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ole Edward Beach

UNADILLA — Ole Edward Beach, after a long illness, this wonderful man went home to be with his Savior Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004.

During his lifetime, he touched many lives in many unforgettable ways. He was a scout master, Civil Air Patrol instructor, model airplane club adviser, Sunday School teacher, choir director, Bible study teacher, elder at the Unadilla Baptist Church and in charge of the call committee at the same church.

Ole graduated from Norwich High School and was also a bandsman in the United States Army during the Korean War and served his term of duty in the Southwestern United States.

He later graduated from Ithaca College with a master’s degree in music. But his real love was music and the students he taught. He followed in his father’s footsteps and continued conducting the Norwich Town Band after his father’s death in the late 1950s, and was a music teacher at several schools across New York state.

He began his career in the Finger Lakes Region and finished it at Vestal High School in the Southern Tier. His success is evident by the number of trophies each school collected during his tenure with them.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne, and his six children, Elinor and James Czebiniak of Schenectady, Ada Buhrmaster of Gansvoort, Beverly and Kenneth Taubenfeld of Enosburg Falls, Vt., Joanne Machia of Huntington, Vt., Thomas Beach of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Benjamin Beach of Gainesville, Fla. Ole also has three stepchildren, Pam White of Sidney, Kathy White of Canyon Lake, Texas, and Don White of Brooklyn. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; one stepgrandson; and one great-grandchild.

He was a humble, self-sacrificing and loving man that will be greatly missed.

Memorial services will be at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at the Unadilla Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brian Cutting officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Baptist Church, 25 Watson St., Unadilla.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Doris N. Whitney

SEBRING, Ohio — Doris Newton Whitney, a former resident of Cooperstown, died July 25, 2004, in Sebring, Ohio.

Born in Utica in 1913, she grew up in Sherrill and graduated from Syracuse University in 1935.

She was a devoted wife and mother, and an accomplished pianist and writer. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and a lifelong, dedicated volunteer.

She is survived by her husband, H. Frederick Whitney; three children, Kenneth of Clinton, Md., Frederick H. of North Olmsted, Ohio, and Rachel Lander of Springville; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Kimball of Pennsylvania.

She was predeceased in death by a son, William; and a sister, Ruth Wick.

A memorial service was held in the Sebring Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Christine Ziem officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Copeland Oaks Life Care Fund.

Arrangements were by Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home, Sebring.

Edward R. Steck

The family will receive friends after the church service at a reception following the service in the Parish Hall.

Minnie Carman

PINE PLAINS — Minnie Carman, 90, of Pine Plains died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at The Kent Nursing Facility, Kent, Conn.

Born on Oct. 2, 1913, in Colchester, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Julia Hendrickson Alberts.

Minnie graduated from Walton Central School in 1930, and in 1934, married Isaac H. Carman.

She had worked at Wassaic State School and at Webutuck Central School in the cafeteria.

She is survived by two sons, Clarence Carman and wife, Kay, of Dover Plains, and Richard Carman of Zephyrhills, Fla.; three daughters, Bessie Walker and husband, Paul, of Glen Avon, Calif., Catherine Jensen and husband, Sam, of Buffalo, Wyo., and JoAnne Chappell of Wassaic. Minnie had 35 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Isaac; sons, David Paul, Henry William (Bill), Donald Parker and Thomas Daniel Carman, who died in August and will be laid to rest at the same time as his mother.

Friends called at Valentine Funeral Home, Park Avenue, Millerton, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Martha Jordan officiating.

Interment is in Walton Cemetery at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Alveria Partridge

SUFFERN — Alveria (Vera) Partridge passed away Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, of natural causes at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. She was 83.

She was born in the Bronx on Aug. 18, 1921, to Robert and Lillian Pezzella. In the 1930s, she, along with her parents and seven brothers and sisters, moved to Nyack where they attended Nyack schools.

She was married to Gerald Stanley Partridge, who passed away in 1989. Together they had 15 children.

Vera was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Parish Church in Nanuet for many years, as well as a member of Rosary Sodality, and enjoyed participating at many Novenas. In recent years she was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Suffern.

Vera is predeceased by two sons, G. Stanley Partridge Jr. of Groveland, Fla., Paul Henry Partridge of Fishkill; three sisters, Lydia Stanley, Agatha Dunlop and Dorothy McGuinness, and two brothers, Peter Pezzella and Lester Pezzella.

She is survived by nine sons, Robert of Milford, Ronald of Valley Cottage, James of Suffern and his wife, Renee, William of Richboro, Pa., Richard of Chester, Michael of Umatilla, Fla., and his wife, Judy, Dennis of New City and his wife, Pam, George of Tucson, Ariz. and John Glenn of Congers and his wife, Tamara; four daughters, Sandra Partridge of West Nyack, Patricia McIntosh of Nanuet, Marie Temple of Washingtonville and her husband, William, Lillian Erwin of Redding, Conn., and her husband Tim. She is also survived by daughters-in-law Diane Partridge of Nyack, Joanne Partridge of New Port Richey, Fla. and Cindi Partridge of Fishkill. Vera is also survived by sisters Gloria Biederman and her husband, Bob, of Nyack and Mary Nelson of Suffern. Additionally, Vera is survived by 41 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

During her earlier years, Vera enjoyed singing and playing the piano. She was the family icon because she devoted her entire life to her children and all family members, friends and acquaintances. She provided valuable life lessons, guidance, home-cooked meals and love to all those who passed through her "open door," and will be truly missed by all.

Friends may call Tuesday, Sept. 28, and Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the family owned and operated Joseph W. Sorce F.H. Inc., 728 West Nyack Rd., West Nyack.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Anthony’s Church, 34 West Nyack Rd., Nanuet.

Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nyack.

Charles Prescott

ONEONTA — Charles Prescott, 88, attained peace Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at home under the devoted care of his loving wife and son after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Barton, Vt., Dec. 24, 1915, Charles was the son of Ellis and Mabel Prescott.

He attended Barton Academy, worked for telephone and electric companies until he entered the service during WWII, serving from September 1942 and receiving his discharge in December 1952.

Charles married Madeline Hanson of Newport, Vt., August 1942. He attended Officer’s Candidate School at Ft. Belvoir, Va., received his commission and then completed mechanical engineering equipment school. He served in the European Campaign, attaining three bronze stars and various other medals. He was discharged as Captain serving as Company Commander in the 310th signal Operations Battalion.

After returning home from active service, he worked for many years for the Vermont Electric Co-op in Johnson, Vt. While line superintendent there, he built the first electric substation in Vermont. He later accepted the manager’s position at the Delaware County Electric Co-op in Delhi, where he was awarded the "Senator Aiken Award" for dedication to rural electrification.

After retiring in 1981, Charles and his wife spent part of their time in Venice, Fla., and the other in Oneonta.

Other than his great interest in his work, he enjoyed his family, relatives and friends. He liked working with wood, from remodeling his home to crafting cherished items. He enjoyed sports — baseball, swimming, skiing — and also music and dancing.

Various surgeries changed his lifestyle, but he was still the same "Charlie" with a great sense of humor, winning personality and a kindness to people and animals. He kept his old friends and made many new ones. He will be dearly missed.

Charles is survived by his wife of 62 years, Madeline; his son Brian and wife, Anne, of Laurens; his sister, Marjorie, of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; his grandchildren, Jonathan Hemmings and wife, Coryn, of Virginia, Tiffany Stefanyk and husband, Bob, of British Columbia and Devin Prescott of Laurens.

He is also survived by two great-grandchildren Jessica Stefanyk and Matthew Hemmings.

Charles is predeceased by his beloved daughter Rae and precious granddaughter Nicole, his sister Gertrude and brothers Milton and Ceylon.

There will be no calling hours.

A service of remembrance will be offered for family, relatives, friends and neighbors at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4, in the Embury Chapel at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with Hospice Chaplain Allison Bookhout officiating.

The family thanks the Catskill Area Hospice personnel, Dr. Matsuo and Dr. Bravin for their kind service.

Gifts in remembrance of Charles can be made to Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Carlton G. Hallock

GILBOA — Carlton George Hallock, 72, of Flat Creek Road, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at his home, Loyal Maples Farm, following a short illness.

Mr. Hallock was born March 28, 1932, in Gilboa, the son of Ivan J. and Margaret (Bartley) Hallock.

He was a 1949 graduate of Gilboa-Conesville Central School and a lifelong dairy farmer. For the past 20 years, he was the proprietor of Platterkill Sand and Gravel. Mr. Hallock was a former member and president of the Gilboa-Conesville Central School Board of Education. He was also a former member of BOCES Board of Education.

Mr. Hallock was a member of Broome Center Chapel Church and Dairy Herd Improvement Association, and at one time received Dairyman of the Year award. Mr. Hallock always had one of the top producing herds in Schoharie County, which was a proud achievement of his.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Boyer O’Conner Hallock, who he married June 22, 1954, in Roxbury; three children, David and his wife, Patricia (Wisse) Hallock, of Gilboa, Timothy and his wife, Luann (Becker) Hallock, of Gilboa and Carlton Thomas Hallock of Plattsburgh; six grandchildren, Denise (Hallock) Gray and husband, Terry, of Laconia, N.H., Stephanie Hallock, Taye Hallock, Catherine Hallock, Bryan Hallock and Casey Hallock; and one great-grandson, Zachary Gray of Laconia, N.H.

Mr. Hallock was predeceased by his parents, Ivan and Margaret Hallock; three brothers, Ivan Eugene, Harold and Glen Hallock, and an infant sister.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 27, at the Flat Creek Baptist Church in Gilboa with the Rev. Jason Thompson and the Rev. Paul Buhrke co-officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26, at Palmer & Shaylor Inc. Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh.

Burial will be in Flat Creek Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Broome Center Chapel Church, in care of Heidi Pickett, 109 Parsonage Hill Rd., Gilboa, NY 12076.
