William Mahoney

AVENTURA, Fla. — William B. Mahoney, a writer and trade-unionist who struggled with alcoholism, got sober and went on to help hundreds of others reach and maintain sobriety in Otsego County, California and South Florida, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, in Miami. He was 92.

Born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1912, Mahoney came to the United States with his family when he was 14. For several years, he and his parents and older brother worked in the mills and tobacco fields of Connecticut, but eventually the family settled in New York City, where Mahoney found work as a copy boy at the New York Daily Mirror.

He also found political activism. At the height of the Great Depression, he helped organize the Newspaper Guild at the Mirror and worked with other unions in his spare time.

By 1937, he had also found time to marry Beatrice Shishko. The same year, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. By the time World War II broke out, he was substantially recovered, but the disease kept him out of the Army. He remained at the Mirror, rising from copy boy to sportswriter to editor and, during the war, writing at other desks as well.

He and Beatrice had two daughters. They divorced after 10 years. Shortly afterward, he married Jeanne Adleman, with whom he also had two children. Around the same time, he left the Mirror and began writing freelance.

His short stories, rooted in the lives of working people and sometimes reflecting his childhood in Ireland, were published in such national magazines as the Saturday Evening Post and Blue Book. One was anthologized in the Post’s "Best Short Stories of 1948," another in a collection for high school students. During the same period, he was also writing freelance for the comic book industry, for DC Comics and others; a number of the pieces he penned in that field are now considered classics.

In the late 1940s, he went to work at the Daily Compass, which had succeeded PM as New York’s left-leaning daily paper, and he reported on sports for most of the three-year lifespan of the Compass.

After a short stint in public relations, he took up the editorship of the newspaper of Local 6 of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union. During his tenure, the magazine won award after award from the International Labor Press Association.

Eventually, he became an administrator for the New York Hotel Trades Council and proved to be one of the council’s most able negotiators, winning unprecedented programs for advancement for minority and immigrant workers in the lowest-level hotel jobs.

Early in the 1960s, he bought some land near Oneonta and built a cabin there as a vacation home. His second marriage dissolved and drinking was having a harsh impact on his private life, if not his career.

In the late 1960s, however, Mahoney turned his life around. He found sobriety in the Manhattan Group of Alcoholics Anonymous, in which many friends of AA founder Bill Wilson were still active.

Then he moved to the Oneonta area, where he became an alcoholism and substance-abuse counselor. He worked for Otsego County clinics for most of a decade. His son Don Mahoney joined him there and lived in Oneonta from 1981 to 1993.

In the early 1980s, Bill retired and moved to the San Francisco Bay area, where, for another decade, he helped many stay sober as an AA sponsor. He made his last move, to Miami, in 1991. In Miami, while in his 80s, he wrote and edited Bill Mahoney’s PEN, a newsletter for senior citizens.

In November of 2003, he celebrated 36 years of sobriety; he was still sponsoring people on his 92nd birthday this past May.

He is survived by his four children, Judith Mahoney Pasternak of New York, Joan Mahoney of Detroit, and Martha Mahoney and Donald Mahoney of Miami; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service Oct. 2, in Miami.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the ACLU or Jobs with Justice.
