He married Frances Carolyn Hinson of Sumter, S.C., on Dec. 19, 1954. Together they had seven children.

He was again called to active duty military service during the Berlin Crisis in 1961 and 1962. It was during this time that God pressed upon him the call to full-time gospel ministry. He lived his life faithful to the words of his mouth: husband of one wife; beloved father of his children and grandchildren, a leader, friend and soldier of God. As Christ has taken this dear one home, he leaves behind those who knew him and loved best. We can now only look to God for the peace that he gives. For if ever a man were truly destined to go to the Lord with a pure heart, he is that man. He is home with his faithful and constant Savior waiting for the rest of us.

Alice P. Barnes

MILFORD — Alice P. Barnes, formerly of Burk Hill Road in the town of Hartwick, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at the age of 82, in Merrick.

Alice was born in Freeport and raised in Merrick, the daughter of Frank Lee Fisher and Myrtle (Hoovler) Fisher.

In 1955, she married Kenneth Barnes. He predeceased her in 1990.

Alice is remembered as someone who was never idle, and although an avid reader and writer of poetry, she will best be remembered for her skills and nonstop creation of all types of crafts and items. Alice loved nature. At her beloved home on Burk Hill she was often heard to call her living room window her "magic window" because it allowed her to observe nature. When she was not feeding the ever-present wildlife, she could often be found tending her garden and flowers. Alice had a fascinating breadth of knowledge and, while outspoken in her beliefs, was willing to listen and discuss ideas. She never failed to add a touch of glamour to everything and everyone she encountered. Nothing was ever boring in her life. It was often said of Alice that she never met a person who didn’t become a friend. She made it a point to learn and call everyone she met by name.

During WWII, Alice was a true "Rosie the Riveter," working for Grumman Aircraft as an aircraft riveter and also at Aerial Products on Long Island as an assembler of chemicals for bombs. Following the war, Alice was employed in retail for many years by W.T. Grant & Co.

In 1955, Ken and Alice purchased land and their beloved home on Burk Hill Road in the Milford area. Thereafter, they spent of their free time in the Milford/Cooperstown area. In 1972, they moved permanently from Long Island to their home on Burk Hill Road. Alice’s love of her home, the Cooperstown/Milford area and the nature that surrounded her was apparent to everyone who knew her.

Alice is survived by her three sisters, Palmer Washburn of Pearland, Texas, and Gloria Fisher and Dolores Wysocki, both of Merrick; as well as by her brother, Kenneth Fisher of Riviera Beach, Fla. She was predeceased by her brother, Frank Fisher.

Friends are invited to attend a graveside service in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

In lieu of flowers, Alice’s family suggests that those who wish to make contributions, do so to their favorite charity in Alice’s memory.

Ann Swantak

BOVINA — Ann Swantak, 91, formerly of Bovina and the Hearthstone Home for Adults, Hobart, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

Ann was born Oct. 30, 1912, in South Kortright, the daughter of Joseph and Maryanne (Ceslak) Swantak.

The youngest of seven children, she grew up on the family farm and remained there most of her life, until 1966 when she moved to Bovina.

Ann was an avid hiker who spent much of her time exploring nature and the outdoors. She often could be seen hiking across fields and wood lots in all seasons, often with a berry pail or basket on her arm.

Her interest in art grew to serious sketching and painting. Many of her observations in nature were recorded and interpreted in various art mediums. She took a casual interest in her work and often joked about its shortcomings. Although asked on several occasions, she declined to exhibit her work.

She loved flowers and gardening as well, and collected and planted a variety of domestic and natural species around her yard. Even the briefest visit required a mandatory inspection of her latest finds.

Ann was predeceased by a longtime companion of nearly 50 years, Howard Hays; three brothers, Steve, John and Frank; three sisters, Blanche, Effie (Stephanie) Kosier and Sister Alice Swantak.

While there will be no calling hours, a liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Burns, celebrant.

Burial will follow the services in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford, in the shadow of the mountains she so loved.
