Mildred N. Burgess

BAINBRIDGE — Mildred Nelson Burgess passed away Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004.

She was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Sidney, Mont., the daughter of the late Carl J. and Anna K. (Johnson) Nelson.

She married Edward Burgess in Cherry Valley on Aug. 5, 1950. He predeceased her in 1990.

Mildred was a 1935 graduate of Cherry Valley Central School. She graduated from Oneonta State Normal School in 1938 and Albany State Teachers College. She taught school for more than 30 years, most of that time in Freeport, L.I., where she retired in 1977.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Susann and Roger Spidle; granddaughter, Kathryn Spidle; two brothers, George E. Nelson, Edwin J. and his wife, Imogene Nelson; many nieces; nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was also predeceased by her sister, Edna N. Ableman.

Graveside memorial services will be Tuesday, Oct. 5, at a time to be announced, in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Mildred’s memory may be directed to: Resident Council Fund, c/o Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Anna K. Miller

SIDNEY — Anna K. Miller, 81, of Sidney passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 4, 1922, daughter of the late Jay and Lizzie Kroon Kilpatrick in Delhi.

She was the secretary for the Sidney United Methodist Church for numerous years. Anna was a member of the Sidney Assembly of God.

Anna married Leland Miller on Oct. 28, 1944, in Otego. He survives in Sidney.

She is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lou and Jack Bonnell of Newark; her granddaughter, Meghan and Jason Rice of Buffalo, and her grandson, Zachary Bonnell of Newark.

Friends may call Sunday, Oct. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4, at the Assembly of God Church in Sidney. Pastor Randall Eliason will officiate.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made in Anna’s name to the Sidney Assembly of God, Plankenhorn Road, Sidney.

Donald L. DeGarmo

JEFFERSON — Donald Lyle DeGarmo, 71, who passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, is also survived by a half sister, Roberta Corner of Coopersville, Mich.

Harry E. Fields

PORT CRANE — Harry E. Fields Sr., 92, most recently of Binghamton, and Port Orange, Fla., and formerly of Oneonta, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at home.

He was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Laurens, the son of Bert and Harriet (Shove) Fields.

He married Claudine McKnight on Aug. 20, 1936, in West Laurens. She predeceased him on June 30, 2002.

Harry is survived by his five children: his daughter, Barbara Tripp and her husband, Don, of Otego; his daughter, Bette Utter, and her husband, Dick, of Otego; his son, Harry Fields Jr. of Binghamton; his daughter, Joyce Haight and her husband, Scott, of Endicott; and his daughter, Ginny Spry, and Larry "Butch" Emmons of Port Crane; his two sisters, Frances Beagle of Oneonta and Evelene Sheldon of Harpursville; a sister-in-law, Liz Fields; 23 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Beverly Henry, and his brother, Cecil Fields, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Beven Long, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will be present at the funeral home from noon until the time of the service for those who wish to call.

The family would like to say a very special thank-you to Ginny for the care she gave to our dear father. Also, a special thanks to the Lourdes Hospice for all of its help.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choice in memory of Harry E. Fields Sr.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Anna Mae Jaeger

NEW BERLIN — Anna Mae Appenzeller Jaeger, 92, of New Berlin, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at the Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Anna was born June 27, 1912, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Theodore and Elizabeth Appenzeller.

She married Adolph Jaeger on Aug. 9, 1931. He died in July 1989.

Anna is survived by her two children, Henry and Anita Jaeger of Edmeston and Katherine and Larry Schrader of Florida; six grandchildren, Larry, Mike and David Jaeger and Sue Holbert of Edmeston, Patti Moughan and Kris VanBenschoten of Virginia; and several great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin, NY 13411 in memory of Anna Mae Jaeger.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Mary Ellen Koniuto

BINGHAMTON — A memorial Mass for Mary Ellen (Mang) Koniuto, who died July 12, 2004, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, (her birthday), at the Holy Trinity Church, 346 Prospect St., Binghamton.

A luncheon will follow at P.T. Reardon’s Restaurant, 435 State St., Binghamton. Please RSVP for the luncheon by Oct. 7, 798-0377.

Louise A. Roberts

ONEONTA — Dr. Louise A. Roberts, 86, died peacefully in her sleep at home in Oneonta on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, after a long bout with cancer.

Dr. Roberts was born in Chicago, Ill., on Nov. 10, 1917, the daughter of John William Acker and Louise Marie Styke.

She married Millard George Roberts on Jan. 6, 1942. Their 47- year marriage ended when Millard passed away in April of 1989.

Louise Roberts spent her early years in Chicago, graduating from Lindblom Technical High School in 1934. She then attended the University of Chicago and earned a B.A. in 1937, an M.A. in 1938, and a Ph.D. in American literature in 1947.

She served as an instructor in English in the undergraduate division of the University of Chicago in 1939 and 1940 and from 1942 through 1948.

In 1947, she was the first woman to receive the distinguished Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Awarded annually to four outstanding teachers, the Quantrell Award is the nation’s oldest prize given for undergraduate teaching, inaugurated in 1938 to interest teachers in training not only scholars and researchers, but also young men and women for participation and leadership in business, civic and professional life.

In 1949, Dr. Roberts and her husband, along with their two infant daughters, moved to Olean, where Dr. Millard Roberts became the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church.

In 1952, the family, now including a son, moved to New York City, where Louise taught at The Spence School while her husband became pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church.

In 1955, Louise and her family, with a second son, moved to Fairfield, Iowa, where she taught in the English department at Parsons College while her husband served as president of the college. There, Louise was admired for her administrative abilities as well as for her excellence in teaching.

In 1967, the family moved back to New York, where Louise joined the English faculties at City College of New York (CCNY), Hunter College of the City University of New York, The College of Insurance, and the State University of New York in Albany.

In 1966, Louise and Millard bought a home in Oneonta, which became their primary residence in 1974. From 1984 until her resignation on Sept. 1, 2004, Louise taught at the State University of New York at Oneonta, primarily at the Writing Center. She also taught courses in the department of English at Hartwick College during most of these years. Louise Roberts’ teaching career spanned 67 years.

She is known for her dedication to her students, her love of literature, her passion for the history of ideas, her commitment to developing writing skills, and her work ethic.

She will be deeply missed by her family, colleagues and students.

Louise is survived by three brothers, John Acker of Hinsdale, Ill., Roy Acker of Franklin, Mich., and Ralph Acker of Apple River, Ill.; by four children, Mary Roberts Sumner of Clayton, Mo., Ann Roberts Maidman of New York, Robert North Roberts of Harrisonburg, Va., and Richard Bradford Roberts of Madison, Conn.; by seven grandchildren, Barbara, Elizabeth and Edmund Sumner, William and Caitlin Roberts, Kathryn Roberts and John Maidman; and by one great-grandchild, Tonya Sumner.

A funeral service for family and colleagues will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in the First United Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, followed by a private burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Visitation will be held between 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta. Visitation will also be for family and colleagues.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Gladys A. Butts

DELHI — Gladys A. Butts, 100, of Delhi, formerly of Oneonta, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born Jan. 13, 1904, in Morris, the daughter of Clarence E. and Rose (Turner) Lull.

She married Earl D. Butts on Dec. 1, 1923, in Morris. Mr. Butts predeceased her on Feb. 1, 1988.

Gladys graduated from Morris Central School, the Class of 1920, and later from Mansfield College in Pennsylvania with a degree in teaching.

At the age of 23, she began teaching at the Filer’s Corners schoolhouse (which was just down the road from where she was born). After teaching, Gladys took the civil service test and went to work as a secretary for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in Oneonta and then later in the Stamford office until her retirement.

In her retirement, she went to work for Bresee’s Department Store in Oneonta, where she worked in several different departments. While working in the appliance department, Gladys won an award for the highest sales.

She was a member of the Oneonta and Binghamton Chapter of CSEA; the Oneonta Business Women’s Club; the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary; the Women’s Relief Corps, the Civil Service Commission; as well as a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, the United Methodist Women and the Hannah Circle.

Gladys is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Pat Butts of Modesto, Calif.; two granddaughters, Cheryl Kirkbride and Donna Henry, both of Modesto, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Kate and Christopher Kirkbride and Jacob Henry, all of Modesto, Calif.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

At the request of Gladys, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Charles E. Preston

MIDDLEFIELD — Mr. Charles E. Preston, 78, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at the Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 30, 1925, in Decatur, the son of Reuben J. and Polly (Clapper) Preston.

On June 5, 1948, he married Clara Susan Tompkins in Hartwick. She predeceased him in 1974.

He worked in the building trade as a laborer and later as a housekeeper at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown until his retirement.

Mr. Preston was a charter member of the Middlefield Fire Department and former trustee of the Middlefield Methodist Church.

Survivors include sons, David Preston of Vermont and Kevin Preston of Middlefield; stepdaughter, Susan Hayes of Cherry Valley; stepsons, Ivan Preston and Leon Preston, both of Hartwick; a sister, Harriette Harper of Hartwick; friend, Carol Preston of Newark Valley; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by sisters Alice and Florence and brothers Willis and Robert.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, with the Rev. Ron Fralick, officiating, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley. Burial will follow in the Prattsville Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville. Calling hours will precede the service from 10 a.m. to noon.

Donations in Mr. Preston’s memory may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 1, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

William T. Canfield

MORRIS — William T. Canfield, 76, of Morris died at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta.

Bill was born March 5, 1928, in Hobart.

It was Bill’s wish that all his friends have a double shot of Chymes in his memory.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris with the Rev. John Burns officiating.

There will be no calling hours, and internment will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, in Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center (Resident Council Fund), 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in his memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Leonard L. Greene

SCHENECTADY — Leonard Lee Greene, 76, of Schenectady, formerly of Oneonta, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004.

He was born in Sidney. Leonard was the son of the late C. Stewart and Eva (Sisson) Green of Oneonta.

He received his education in Oneonta. Leonard was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1949, serving in the Philippines, Japan and Korea. He retired in 1993 as a metallurgist with Al Tech Company in Watervliet.

Leonard was the beloved husband of 52 years to Pauline (Giambalvo) Greene, and beloved father to David L. Greene and his wife, Dorothy, of Schenectady, and grandfather to Jennifer and Ashley Greene of Albany. He is also survived by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Eleanor Rutherford of Oneonta; sisters-in-law, Vivian Chase of Morris and Marie Giambalvo of Binghamton; many cousins; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating.

Joan M. Parliman

ONEONTA — Joan M. Parliman, 63, of Oneonta passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

She was born in Oneonta on April 16, 1941, the daughter of Fred C. and Loretta (Mondore) Parliman.

A lifelong area resident, Joan received her licensed nursing assistance diploma from A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in 1958. She continued to work there until her retirement in 1985.

Her interests were reading, collecting angel figurines and spending time with her friends.

Joan is survived by her brothers, Fred Parliman and his wife, Donna, of Port Crane, Charles Henry Parliman and his wife, Karyo, of Oneonta, Richard Earl and George Parliman of Oneonta; an uncle, Earl Parliman of Arcadia, Fla.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her best friends, Marie Schaeffer and Rita Armstrong, both of Oneonta.

A private funeral service will be held at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Harry E. Fields

BINGHAMTON — Harry E. Fields Sr., 92, most recently of Binghamton, and Port Orange, Fla., and formerly of Oneonta, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at home.
