Charles Sundstrom

DELHI — Charles Herbert Sundstrom, 84, of Delhi died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

He was born July 20, 1920, in Norwood, Mass., the son of Oscar and Olga (Andersen) Sundstrom.

He married Grace Amberman in Hicksville, Long Island, in December 1961.

A veteran of World War II, Charles was employed as a sheet metal worker, manufacturing ship parts in Lake Success, Long Island.

He and his wife later settled in Inverness, Fla. There they were members of the Hernando Baptist Church. In June of 2001, because of failing health, he and Grace moved to Delhi to be closer to family. Shortly after moving to Delhi, Charles was admitted to Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

Charles loved old antique cars and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Grace, of Delhi; a son, Gar H. and Betty Sundstrom of Milton, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Joan and George Verspoor of Delhi; a granddaughter, Alisa and Jason Bennett of Sarasota, Fla.; five stepgrandchildren; a great-grandson, Jake Bennett; and 15 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Contributions are asked to be made to the Christian Missionary Alliance Church of Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Arlene Hadden-Matthews

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. — Arlene Hadden-Matthews passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 30, 2004.

She was born the daughter of the late Gaylord and Katherine (Nellie) Martin Hadden.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Bloomville. Committal services will be held at 4 p.m. later that day in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cure Autism Now Foundation, 5455 Wilshire Blvd. No. 715, Los Angeles, CA 90036-4234.

Alyce Hunt Novak

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dr. Alyce Hunt Novak, 73, formerly of Oneonta, passed away Oct. 3, 2004, at University Hospital in Charlotte, N.C.

Alyce was known to be an outstanding and unique individual and so important to the numerous lives she touched. Through her teaching, mentoring and counseling, Alyce taught many people to improve their lives. To know Alyce was to be enriched, and she will be dearly missed by all of those who loved her.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Novak.

Alyce is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Emese Novak of Westchester, Pa.; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Taisa Novak of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Darryl Novak of Hartwick; daughter and son-in-law, Gene Novak and Matthew Hanson of Denver, Colo.; and three grandsons, Garrett Thomas Novak, 12, Samuel Novak Hanson, 2, and Alexander Emerson Hanson, 8 months.

A celebration of Alyce’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at the Craven Center, located in the Morris Conference Center at SUNY Oneonta. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Community Education: Opportunities for Otsego, Inc., 3 West Broadway, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Robert McGregor

EDMESTON — Robert B. McGregor, 56, of Edmeston died peacefully at home Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, with his wife and son at his side.

He was born Oct. 6, 1948, in Margaretville, the son of Richard and Beryl W. (Vansteenburg) McGregor.

He married Bette (Fredenburgh) Waller on May 21, 1983.

Robert enjoyed a varied career, from logging to working at the Stamford Ski Resort as a lift attendant. He was an excellent handyman who enjoyed tinkering with anything that needed attention. Robert had previously been active in the Rod & Fish Club in Maryland and the Boy Scouts of America.

Robert is survived by his wife, Bette; his son, Juston; his stepson, Duane Waller and wife, Lindi; his granddaughter, Theresa Waller; his brother, Dale McGregor and wife, Brenda; his sisters, Gail Merwin and husband, John; Laberta Mattice; and Deloris Dehni and husband, Nurittin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Stamford Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mudge officiating.

Arrangements by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

George H. Raeder

ROXBURY — George H. Raeder, 82, of Roxbury passed away Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at his residence.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1921, in Montgomery Hollow, Roxbury, the son of Edward Paul Raeder and Leana A. Holcite.

George married Audrey Nickerson on July 2, 1948, in Lakeville, Conn. She died May 24, 2004.

He graduated from Roxbury Central School in 1940.

George’s primary occupation was dairy farming in Roxbury. He also worked for the town of Roxbury Highway Department.

George loved his home and living in Roxbury, which he considered the best place in the world. He was a very creative person — he could come up with an idea and make something very worthwhile and useful.

George was a history buff, and enjoyed country music and Western movies.

He was a lifelong and vocal Democrat, doing many things for the local Democratic Party. He was a lifelong member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, where he served several terms as a consistory member.

George is survived by one son, George E. and daughter-in-law, Selina Raeder, Bonaire, Ga.; two daughters, Nancy and son-in-law, Walt Vosbrink, Unadilla, and Noreen Hannon, Roxbury, and son-in-law, Jim, Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Ken Furman and wife, Olga, Wyckoff, N.J., Amy Furman Cole and husband, Don, Highland, Elizabeth Furman Sears and husband, Dave, Rosendale, Kevin Furman and wife, Chris, Roxbury, Audrey Lee Raeder, Atlanta, Ga., and Nathaniel Raeder, Bonaire, Ga.; five great-grandsons; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews; also Tigger and Smokey, the cats.

He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Raeder and his wife, Audrey Nickerson Raeder.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, when the family will be in attendance. Friends may call at their convenience on Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church in Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Contributions in memory of George H. Raeder can be made to Catskill Area Hospice or Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, NY 12474.

Grace Lindsley

SIDNEY — Beatrice Grace Lindsley died Oct. 6, 2004, at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

She was born Sept. 15, 1933, to Clarence and Beatrice Clark. She was raised in Johnson City and Unadilla.

Mrs. Lindsley graduated from Unadilla High School and attended Hartwick College in Oneonta.

Grace married Norman H. Lindsley on June 2, 1956. She and Norman raised a family and lived in Bainbridge from 1959-1988. Grace lived in Sidney from 1988 to October 2004.

During her life, Grace was a Sunday school teacher and was involved with Scouting. She enjoyed spending many summers with her family and parents vacationing at Otsego Lake in Cooperstown.

Grace also was an avid bowler and golfer. She bowled in many leagues in Bainbridge and Sidney. Grace and her husband also went on golfing vacations and played in leagues in Guilford.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2000; her father passed away in 1986 and her mom joined him in 1999.

Grace is survived by two sons, Gary E. Lindsley of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and Dale N. Lindsley and his wife, Judy, of Binghamton. She also is survived by two brothers and a sister, Donald Clark and his wife, Mary, Dunedin, Fla., Jack M. Clark and his wife, Marjorie, Safety Harbor, Fla., and Jane Harris and her husband, Robert, Oneida Castle; a grandson, Tracy Lindsley of Bainbridge; and a great-grandson, Tyler Lindsley, also of Bainbridge.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc., 179 Main St., Unadilla.

A private memorial service for the family will be held at another time. Burial will take place in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Donations may be sent in lieu of flowers to Lourdes Hospital, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, NY 13905, attention Hospice, and/or the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680 North Canton, OH 44720. Envelopes will be available at the Joyce Funeral Home, Inc.

John A. Davis

WELLS BRIDGE — John A. Davis Jr., born on Feb. 26, 1927, in Wells Bridge to J. Arthur Davis and Carrie Morris, died on Oct. 6, 2004, in Morristown, N.J., at the age of 77.

John lived in Wells Bridge for most of his life. He married Marjorie Freer in 1949. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in September 2004. John and Marjorie owned a dairy farm and worked in real estate sales for many years.

John was an avid bowler and one of the first bowlers inducted into the Tri-County Bowlers Hall of Fame. John, with several associates, built and operated Country Lanes Bowling Alley in Wells Bridge. After they retired, John and Marjorie moved to Zephyrhills, Fla., where he loved to play golf and joined many community activities.

He was a member and usher of the First Baptist Church of Zephyrhills. John was a member of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church for nearly 70 years and a lifetime member of the Elks Club of Oneonta.

John is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his son, James, and daughter-in-law, Pamela Davis, of Moorestown, N.J.; his daughter, Joanne, and son-in-law, Ralph Underwood, of Otego; his daughter Judy, and son-in-law, Jonathan Clemente, of Morristown, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Brian Underwood of Otego, Rebecca Underwood of Manchester, N.H.; Stuart, Catherine and Caroline Davis of Moorestown, N.J., Cara Clemente of Vigo, Spain, Ian, Jenna and Tess Clemente of Morristown, N.J.; a sister, Jean Frasier of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a brother, Clair Davis of Unadilla; a sister-in-law, Jean Davis of Bainbridge; and a sister-in-law, Beatrice Freer of Bradenton, Fla.

John was predeceased by his sister, Marian Krauss, who died in 1975, and his brother, Mahlon Davis, who died in January 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, directly off Exit 10 of I-88, with the Rev. David Steensma, pastor of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, when the family will be present.

Interment will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Wells Bridge.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Agnes Q. Palmer

MEREDITH — Agnes Quick Palmer, 88, a former longtime Meredith Square resident, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where she had been residing for the past two years.

The daughter of Abram L. and Ellen (Middlemist) Quick, she was born June 15, 1916, in Meridale, and married Edgar W. Palmer in 1938. He died Jan. 31, 1967.

A graduate of A.L. Kellogg School, Treadwell, receiving her B.S. degree from Hartwick College and masters degree from SUCO, after raising her family, Agnes commenced teaching in 1958 at Meridale School, later at A.L. Kellogg School, then at Delaware Academy, Delhi, where she taught third grade for 12 years, retiring in 1978.

Residing in Meredith Square since 1946, Agnes was a member of the Meredith Baptist Church; Meridale Ladies Aid Society; the former Delaware Rebekah Lodge, Delhi; and was an accomplished watercolor artist, also giving art lessons at St. James Manor, Oneonta, where she moved in 2000. Through the years, she enjoyed her art group associations, and many of her paintings were displayed throughout the state.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas (Joanne) Palmer of Webster, Charles Palmer of Schenectady, and Robert (MaryJo) Palmer of Pittsburgh, Pa.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Floren L. (Joan) Quick of Alexandria, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kelly O’Neill, and three brothers, Alfred, William and Lewis Quick.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, by the Rev. Jeff Staples, with burial following in the Meredith Square Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Meridale Ladies Aid Society will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Robert C. Palmer

ONEONTA — Robert C. Palmer, 79, passed quietly into the loving arms of the Lord with his family by his side, on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004. After a long illness with inclusive body myositis, he died at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where he had resided for four years.

He was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Oneonta, the son of Harry and Ruth (Dalley) Palmer.

He married Glenna Baker, who predeceased him in 1987.

Mr. Palmer was employed by the D&H Railroad in Oneonta as a car repairman for 38 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta. He was an avid card player, and enjoyed bowling, fishing, trapping and hunting. He was also an avid reader of daily devotions and mystery novels. Mr. Palmer spent several winters in the Lake County area in Florida.

He will be greatly missed by all the lives he touched.

He is survived by his children, James and his wife, Janet Palmer, of Maryland, Daniel Palmer of Portland, Ore., Janice and her husband, Bill Button, of Mt. Dora, Fla., Joanne and her husband, Steven Fink, of Norwich; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Risley of Davenport, brother, Marshall and his wife, Regina Palmer, of Sidney, sister, Donna and her husband, Walt Currie, of Oneonta; many nieces and nephews; and also his loving companion, Catharine Ward, of Oneonta, and her family.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Wayne Palmer and Harry Palmer Jr.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen J. Cornwell, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Eugenia M. Rogan

CLIFTON PARK — Eugenia M. Rogan, 90, of Clifton Park and Worcester, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late John and Wanda Sawicz, and the wife of the late Edward John Rogan.

She was a loving and gentle wife, mother and grandmother. Her love of literature, art, music and nature served as an inspiration to all. Eugenia had a profound respect for humanity and all living things. She lived her life with quiet dignity and elegance.

Eugenia is survived by six children, John Rogan and his wife, Iris, of Marysville, Calif., Eileen Klem and her husband, Douglas, of Charlotte, N.C., Christine McGurrin and her husband, David, of Clifton Park, Anne Rogan of Clifton Park, Edward Robert Rogan and his wife, Jeri, of Littleton, Colo., and Timothy Rogan and his wife, Janice, of Stockton, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Jane Deppe, Helen Davis and Elizabeth Timmins; and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.

The celebration of the life of Eugenia Rogan will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at Saint Joseph’s Church, 201 Main St., Route 7, Worcester. Interment will be in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, Worcester immediately following the Mass.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Catricala Funeral Home, 1597 Route 9, Clifton Park, from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Donations in Eugenia Rogan’s memory, may be made to Saint Joseph’s Church, 201 Main St., Route 7, Worcester, NY 12197.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Daniel D. Purcell Funeral Home.

Amy Charlene Lout

DAVENPORT — Graveside services for Amy Charlene Lout will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport, with the Rev. Carol Wilson, pastor of the Charlotte Valley Larger Parish, Davenport, officiating. The family will be in attendance.

Amy died Nov. 26, 2003, following a courageous battle against cancer.

Local arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Ella Murphy Butler

DOWNSVILLE — Ella Murphy Butler, 79, a longtime Downsville resident, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Oct. 8, 2004, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been a resident since 1999.

The daughter of Earl and Maude (Shultis) Shaver, she was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Shavertown. Twice widowed, her first husband, Sterling E. Murphy Sr., died in 1982 and her second husband, Milton Butler, whom she married in 1994, died in 1995.

A Downsville resident from 1954 to 1999, Ella possessed a life-long passion for cooking, owning and operating Murphy’s Restaurant in earlier years, and later she was employed more than 20 years at the former Round-up Ranch Resort, until retirement.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and past-president of the church Altar Guild; a charter member and longtime president of Downsville Fire Department Auxiliary; and an avid bowler in Walton and Hancock leagues.

Surviving are six children, Walter Murphy of Downsville, Sylvia (Steven) Reed of Hamden, Sterling (Sherrie) Murphy Jr. of Walton, Alfretta (Paul) Doig, James (Linda) Murphy, and Roy (Mary Lou) Murphy, all of Downsville; 37 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Arthur (Bonnie) Shaver of Downsville; a sister, Marie (Maurice "Mousie") Davis of Oneonta; two brothers-in-law, Bernard Davis of Florida, and Albert "Hick" Murphy Sr. of Walton; nine stepchildren from the Butler family; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Ralph and Louis Shaver, a sister, Bessie Davis, and two great-grandsons, Brandon Reed and Tyler Murphy.

Friends are invited to attend graveside services at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, in the Shavertown Cemetery. The Rev. Steven Shaver, Ella’s nephew, will officiate. Burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ella’s memory to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church or Downsville Fire Department Auxiliary will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.
