Alyce Hunt Novak

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dr. Alyce Hunt Novak, 73, formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Oct. 3, 2004, at University Hospital in Charlotte, N.C.

Alyce was known to be an outstanding and unique individual and so important to the numerous lives she touched. Through her teaching, mentoring and counseling, Alyce taught many people to improve their lives. To know Alyce was to be enriched, and she will be dearly missed by all of those who loved her.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Novak.

Alyce is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Emese Novak of Westchester, Pa.; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Taisa Novak of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Darryl Novak of Hartwick; daughter and son-in-law, Gene Novak and Matthew Hanson of Denver, Colo.; and three grandsons, Garrett Thomas Novak, 12, Samuel Novak Hanson, 2, and Alexander Emerson Hanson, 8 months.

A celebration of Alyce’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at the Craven Center, located in the Morris Conference Center at SUNY Oneonta. All are welcome.

Robert C. Palmer

ONEONTA — Robert C. Palmer, 79, who passed away on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, is also survived by his sisters-in-law Ann Beames of Afton, Lill Avery of Franklin, and Una and her husband, Bob Schultz, of Mt. Dora, Fla.

Louise Lombardo

SCHENEVUS — Louise (Luella) E. Lombardo, 67, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 9, 1937, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Frederick and Margaret (Drisco) Dietrich.

She married Frank Lombardo on June 18, 1955, in Brooklyn.

Luella was a member of the C.H. Graham Hose Company Auxiliary in Schenevus, and was at one time employed at Greenleaf Steel Rule Die Corp. in Schenevus.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Lombardo, of Schenevus; her children, Frank Lombardo of Queens, Michael and Risa Lombardo, Joyce Ann and Ken Frango, Vincent Lombardo and Richard Lombardo, all of Arizona; 14 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; brothers-in-law, Charles and Dorothy Lombardo of Arizona, Anthony and Rose Lombardo of Schenevus, and Joseph and Yvonne Lombardo of Davenport Center.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the funeral home, with the Fr. Steven Moore, pastor at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Carol M. Kattanick

GRESHAM, Ore. — Carol May House Kattanick, 75, of Gresham, died Oct. 9, 2004, of breast cancer.

She was born May 2, 1929, in Oneonta to Chauncey and Ida (Parks) House.

In New York, she enjoyed bowling and singing.

Carol loved the Oregon coast. She moved to Hermiston, Ore., in 1979 from Oneonta, to Oregon City, Ore., in 1993, to Gresham in 2003.

She married Joseph D. Kattanick in Hermiston on Sept. 28, 1980.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph, of Gresham; daughter, Darlene Walker of Gresham; sons, Kerwin Mellott of Orlando, Fla., Greg Mellott of Norco, Calif., Eugene Mellott of Fayetteville N.C., Mark Mellott of Detroit, Mich., and Robert Mellott of Lemoore, Calif.; brothers, Sumner J. House of Maine, Clyde House and Ed House of Oneonta, and David House of Arizona; sisters, Breta Snyder of Rhode Island, Frances Elwood and Ann Mongillo of Oneonta; sister-in-law, Maryann Helmer of Oneonta; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren and her father-in-law, Vincent Kattanick of New Orleans.

She was predeceased by her bothers and a sister, John M. House and Chauncey House Jr., and Elva House Cower.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel, 520 W. Powell in Gresham. Interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to breast cancer research.

Florence Lagasse

CHERRY VALLEY — Florence Lagasse, 91, formerly of New Bedford, Mass., and a resident of Hone Road in the town of Cherry Valley since 1955, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at her residence after a long illness.

Born in Montreal on June 13, 1913, Florence was the daughter of the late Joseph and Celina (Jolly) Carreau.

She was a communicant of St. Thomas RC Church in Cherry Valley and a longtime member of the Rotterdam Columbiettes.

She married Alfred Lagasse on July 29, 1934. He died in August 1989.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Lagasse of East Windsor, N.J.; a sister, Alice Suedkamp of N. Easton, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three sons and a daughter, Georges Lagasse in 2002, Marcel Lagasse in 1967, Maurice Lagasse in June of this year, and Irene (Lagasse) Wicks in 1996.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at St. Thomas RC Church, Cherry Valley. Burial will follow in Cherry Valley Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Lappeus Funeral Home, 113 Park St., Sharon Springs.

Memorial contributions may be made to Schoharie County Cancer Support for Families, in care of Susan Cimino-Carey, 178 Grandview Drive, Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Warren L. Lilley

GILBERTSVILLE — Warren Lawrence Lilley, 69, of Gilbertsville died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at his home in Gilbertsville.

He was born Oct. 3, 1935, in the town of Butternuts, the son of Merton Haight Lilley and Marion (Olmstead) Lilley.

He served his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960.

He married Margaret Haggerty on June 1, 1957, at the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Morris.

He was employed as a supervisor at the Borden Chemical Company in Bainbridge for many years.

Warren was a lifelong area resident and was a member of the American Legion Post 1339 of Gilbertsville and a former member of the Gilbertsville Rod & Gun Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Warren is survived by his wife, Margaret (Peg) Lilley of Gilbertsville; his mother, Marion Lilley of Gilbertsville; his daughters, Karen Grabo and husband Mark and Barbara MacPherson and husband Scott all of Gilbertsville; his brothers and sisters, Jean Gilbert and husband Donald of Bainbridge, Elizabeth (Betty) Haynes of Gilbertsville, Virginia (Ginny) Vanvalkenburg of Sidney Center, Clyde Lilley and wife Barbara of New Berlin, Marilyn Enggaard of Oxford, Sharon Lilley of Unadilla, Keith Lilley and wife Barbara of Otego, Wayne Lilley and wife Doni of South New Berlin. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Daniel, Andrew and Matthew Grabo, Brianne and Elle MacPherson, and Brian, Kevin and Melissa Lilley; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Warren was predeceased by a son, Brian; and a brother, Bruce.

Calling hours will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004. A rosary service will be held at 8:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at the Holy Cross R.C. Church, with the Rev. John Burns officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Richard C. Tobey

KINGSTON — Richard C. "Dick" Tobey, 59, of Voorhees Avenue, Kingston, died at The Benedictine Hospital on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, after succumbing to a sudden onset of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

He was born in Oneonta on Dec. 27, 1944, a son of the late Carson and Alverna DuBois Tobey.

Mr. Tobey was employed as a project manager for Iron Mountain until his illness.

He was a graduate of the Class of 1963, Andrew S. Draper Central High School, Schenevus.

Mr. Tobey is survived by his wife, Barbara Aumand Tobey; one daughter, Stacey Tobey, and one son, Brent Tobey, both of Kingston; sister, Jackie DeLay of Bainbridge; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A funeral procession will form Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home Inc., 27 Smith Ave., Kingston. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Saint Peter’s Church, Wurts Street, Kingston. Cremation in Wiltwyck Crematory. Private inurnment will be held in Saint Peter’s Cemetery, Kingston.

Expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, may be made in the form of contributions to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation, PO Box 5312, Akron, Ohio 44334.

Thomas Brennan

GUILFORD — Thomas LaMont Brennan Jr., 56, of Guilford and formerly of DuMont, N.J., passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Feb. 3, 1948, son of Thomas L. and Frances (Greenwood) Brennan in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

Thomas graduated from DuMont High School in 1966 and promptly entered the United States Marine Corps. He served his country in Vietnam and was honorably discharged. After the military, he worked as an electrician. Most recently, he was employed by the Amphenol Corp. in Sidney for 22 years.

Thomas was a member of the Sidney American Legion Post No. 183 and the Sidney VFW Post No. 7914. He was a past chaplain for his VFW Post in Bergen County, New Jersey.

He is survived by his father, Thomas L. Brennan Sr., Tenafly, N.J.; dear friend and companion, Lorraine Newell Cornish, and her two sons, Garrett Newell and Derek Cornish, of Guilford; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Kenneth Gittings, Naples, Fla., and Sharon and Neal Bonsanti, Coopers City, Fla.; brother, Richard Brennan, Harrington Park, N.J.; daughter, Michelle and Jeff Martin, and their daughter, Samantha, of Melbourne, Fla.; godson, Brian Butcher, Guilford; nephews, Thomas and Rosemarie Mertz, Eric and Theresa Mertz, Thomas Brennan; nephew and godson, Richard and Lorie Brennan; nieces, Heather Brennan, Nicole and David Halbig, Lisa and Steven Sherrill and Toni Lynne Bonsanti; seven grandnieces and grandnephews; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Thomas was predeceased by his mother, Frances Brennan.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Beven Long, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Otego, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New York State Veterans Home Patient Fund, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830-4305 or the charity of one’s choice.

Flora M. Alger

ONEONTA — Flora M. Alger, 95, of Oneonta passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

She was born Aug. 9, 1909, in Schenevus, the daughter of Thomas and Nettie E. (Wayman) Jeffers.

She married Richard Alger on Nov. 1, 1978, in Oneonta. He survives her.

Flora was an Oneonta resident for more than 50 years. Before that, she had lived in Schenevus and Cobleskill. She also worked on the family farm with her husband in Milford and Roseboom.

Her husband, Richard Alger, survives her. Also surviving are her two sons, Donald Holling of Horseheads and Ernest Holling of Oneonta; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Two sons, John and William Holling, as well as her brother, Arthur Jeffers, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be private at the request of the family. Burial will follow in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barbara Holling Memorial Fund, Laurens Central School, 64 Main St., Laurens, NY 13796 in memory of Flora M. Alger.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Frederick G. Miller

WALTON — Frederick Gordon Miller Jr., 77, of Walton passed away Saturday morning, Oct. 9, 2004, at Countryside Care Center after a long illness.

Mr. Miller was born in Danbury, Conn., on May 27, 1927, the son of Frederick G. and Lilly Eugenie Henriksen Miller Sr.

He came to the Walton area in 1967 and was employed as a truck driver for Dellwood Foods.

On June 19, 1993, he married the former Vivian M. Storrer at Loomis Brook.

He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II as a communications specialist.

He was a member of the Hamden Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Hitt Miller; three daughters, L. Jean and James Covington of Oldsman, Fla., Joyce and John Deubler of Pasadena, Md., and Janet and Charles Holliday of Kentucky; 15 stepchildren, Fred and Deb Hitt, Tim Hitt and Lorraine Walley, Lisa and Mark Pierce, Julie and Steve Condon, all of Walton; Terry and Shawn Hitt and Robert and Sandra Hitt, all of Boonville; Edward Hitt and Geraldine McCarthy of Greene; Melanie Watson and Scott Davis, Tricia and Phil Cole, Betsy and Arnie Drumm, Wendy and Mike Layton, all of Sidney Center; Steven and Kelly Hitt of North Brookfield, Mass.; Kitty and Jim Smith of Bath; Kristy and Davey Kotorman of Clayton, N.C., and Lacey and Cecil Davis of Bloomville; nine grandchildren; 38 stepgrandchildren; and several great- and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mr. Miller was predeceased by a daughter, Kathy Oliver, in 1998; a son, Kenneth Miller, in 1990 and a brother, Francis Miller, in 2003.

Calling hours for friends and family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening, Oct. 12, 2004, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, with Elder Ralph Kniskern officiating.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Miller’s memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available from the funeral home. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Carol Kattanick

GRESHAM, Ore. — Carol May House Kattanick, who passed away Oct. 9, 2004, is also survived by her brother, Sumner J. House of Maine, and her father-in-law, Vincent Kattanick of New Orleans.

She was predeceased by her brothers and a sister, John M. House and Chauncey House Jr. and Elva House Cower.

Barbara M. Landry

ONEONTA — Barbara M. Landry, 53, of Oneonta died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in Oneonta.

She was born in Springfield, Mass., on Aug. 14, 1951, the daughter of Frederick and Alice (Wood) Seymour.

She married Edward Landry in West Springfield, Mass., in 1987. He died Jan. 8, 2003.

She was employed by Wal-Mart of Oneonta in retail management as a customer service representative.

She had resided in the area for the past nine years and was formerly of Springfield.

Barbara enjoyed crafts and was well-known for her love for her family and her dog, Sassy.

She is survived by her mother, Alice Seymour of South Carolina; her children, Cherie Flannery and husband James of Oneonta, Leon Joubert and wife Wendy of East Meredith, Billie Jo Powers of Hyde Park; her stepchildren, Elaine Judd and husband David and Theresa Coumo, all of Putney, Vt. Barbara was blessed with 17 grandchildren, Barbara Ann Megale and husband Tom, Amanda and James Flannery, Jessica and Evan Sawyer, Kassidy, Katrina and Shane Joubert, Micheline, Dionna, Shamira and Stanley Powers, and Crystal, Steven, Richard and Kimberley Judd. She is also survived by her brothers, Fredrick Seymour and wife Mary Jo of Connecticut, Gerald Seymour and wife Sharon of South Carolina; sisters, Diana Maxwell and Jean Fornwalt of Bradford, Vt., Sandy Armitage and husband Lenny of South Carolina; as well as 27 nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father, Frederick Seymour; and a brother, Richard Seymour.

Calling hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Warren Hawken

NORWICH — Warren Hawken, 79, of Norwich passed away peacefully Friday morning, Oct. 8, 2004, after a long illness.

Warren was born June 26, 1925, in Hillside, N.J., the son of the late Fred and Esther (Bloomer) Hawken. He grew up in Hillsdale and attended schools in Hillsdale and Park Ridge, N.J.

A veteran of the United States Navy, Warren served his country from June of 1943 until his honorable discharge in February of 1946.

On Nov. 10, 1955, he married Claire (Pelsang) who survives, and they moved to Woodcliff Lake, N.J., to make their home.

He was a self-employed carpenter in New Jersey, as well as in Norwich, for more than 40 years.

Warren enjoyed the country and the outdoors, and liked to hunt, fish and snowmobile. Also, in New Jersey, as a hobby, he grew vegetables and sold them at a small roadside stand he built.

Warren is survived by his wife of 49 years, Claire, of Norwich; his daughter, Patti Haddad and husband Gerry of Bainbridge; his three grandchildren, Sara Haddad of Afton and Eric and Leslie Haddad of Bainbridge; a sister, Anita Hoffman; his niece, Laurie Smith and husband Tim of Toms River, N.J.; Tom Hawken of Baltimore, Md.; a niece, Pam Figuerado and husband Richard of Endwell, Debbie and John PaQuette of Cranston, R.I.; a nephew, Greg Mann of Long Island, nephews Jeff and John Pelsang of Arlington, Texas, Jonathon and David Pelsang of Homer; nieces, Donna and Sherri Pelsang of Jackson, N.J.; and his beloved dog, Shada.

Warren was predeceased by his two brothers, Arthur and Fred Hawken, and his loving daughter, Diane Claire Hawken, in 1964.

Memorial services for Warren will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, Norwich, with the Rev. James Vargo of Norwich officiating. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

Diane R. Kilborn

LAURENS — Diane R. Kilborn, 58, of Laurens passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at her residence surrounded by her family.

She was born on Dec. 27, 1945, in Syracuse, the daughter of Glenn F. and Hazel (Bertrand) Chapman.

She married Ralph E. Kilborn at the Adams Methodist Church.

Diane is survived by her husband, Ralph E. Kilborn, of Laurens; her two sons, Shaun Seymour of Elmira and Scott Motter of Franklin; and a daughter, Melody Blair of San Diego, Calif.; as well as three grandchildren. She is also survived by six brothers, Donald Chapman of Moline, Ill., Michael Chapman of Watertown, Glenn Chapman of Watertown, Raymond Chapman of Utica, Roger Chapman of Watertown, and Thomas Chapman of Watertown; and a sister, Joan Turner of Evansmills.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Chapman.

A service to celebrate the life of Diane will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, 632 State St., Watertown, NY 13601, with the Rev. Bruce Smith, pastor of the Stone Presbyterian Church, Watertown, officiating.

A private interment will be in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Sisters of St. Joseph, 1425 Washington St., Watertown, NY 13601.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
