H. Allan Knox

STAMFORD — H. Allan Knox, 95, a retired banker, long prominent in northern Delaware County, was born on July 8, 1909, the son of Herbert A. Knox, an attorney at law, and Ethel Elizabeth Harvey. He passed away Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at home.

He entered Hamilton College in 1927 from Evander Childs High School in New York City and received an AB degree with the class of 1931. Thereafter he pursued graduate studies at Columbia University, while at the same time served in a large law firm. For the next few years he was with the state Insurance Department, employed in the rehabilitation of Bond and Mortgage Guaranty Corporation, and left to join the Real Estate Department of Mutual Life Insurance Company.

In 1938, he was married to Victorine Warner in Philadelphia, Pa., and shortly thereafter moved to Delaware County, where he has since resided. She predeceased him on July 14, 1988.

After his discharge from active duty in the Army during World War II, he returned for a short time to The First National Bank of Grand Gorge and then began his long association with the National Bank of Hobart, where over a period of 30 years he served successively as cashier, vice president and president and director.

Upon his retirement in 1974, he then arranged the merger of that bank with The National Bank and Trust Company of Norwich, where he served another 12 years as a director and as secretary of its Board of Directors.

While pursuing his career as a banker, he became involved in local affairs, and over the years he served on the boards of many organizations. At various times he was on the boards of the hospital, the library, the Catskill Area Hospice, the Delaware County Bankers Association, and was also president of the Hobart Rotary Club as well as commander of the American Legion Post.

In the early 1960s, he was quick to realize that the local area needed something more than the income from the surrounding waning agricultural community to sustain its economy. Therefore, in an effort to help with a revitalization program he was able to arrange initial financing for a pharmaceutical manufacturing firm, which was organized in the village of Hobart, and over the years has grown to a multimillion-dollar business employing more than 200 local people. Since its beginning, he has served continuously as a member of its Board of Directors.

In the early 1970s he founded and directed the Hobart Community Foundation Inc., a public not-for-profit corporation that was able to tap the resources of local private foundations to carry to completion many local municipal construction projects.

He is survived by his grandson, Kyle, and his wife, Michelle Shader, of Galway; two great-grandsons, Nathan and Bendan Shader, Galway; a niece, Patricia DeGrace, Unadilla; and two nephews, Walter Knox, Massachusetts, and John Knox, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Knox, Florida; and several cousins.

Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Stamford Cemetery, Stamford, with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating.

Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
