DeLon E. Travers

SOUTH EDMESTON — DeLon E. (Tex) Travers, 68, of South Edmeston, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica.

He was born in North Norwich on Oct. 3, 1936, the son of Eugene and LuVan (Davis) Travers. He was a graduate of the Cincinnatus school system and a graduate of Morrisville State College.

Tex was employed by Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin Grange and held the office of gatekeeper for 12 years. He was also a member of the New York State Small Engines Association, the New York Railroad Association and the Burlington Flats Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his companion of 33 years, Minnie McLean of South Edmeston; a daughter, Audra DeVall; a sister, Jean DeVall and husband Ed; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; as well as his extended family, Dave McLean, Mary Saunders, Judy Vibbard and Rita Andrews.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct., 18, at the South Edmeston Community Church in South Edmeston, with the Rev. Jeff McLallen officiating.

Committal services and burial will follow at the Columbus Corners Cemetery in South Edmeston.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations in Tex’s memory to the South Edmeston Community Church, PO Box 829, New Berlin, NY 13411.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Lester C. Hawkins

CANAJOHARIE — Lester C. Hawkins, 82, passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam.

He was born March 1, 1922, in the town of Canajoharie, the son of Victor J. and Amanda (Gnossa) Hawkins.

He married Vivian A. Ottman on April 23, 1949, in the True Church of Christ, Sharon. She survives.

He was a 1940 graduate of Cherry Valley Central School. He was a dairy farmer until his retirement. He was a former member of the National Farmers Organization and the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Survivors, besides his wife, Vivian A. O. Hawkins of Canajoharie, include a son, Philip A. Hawkins of Canajoharie; a daughter, Marilyn M. Shirley of Villa Ridge, Mo.; sister, Thelma Laymon of Canajoharie; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, David L. Hawkins, in 2001.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Chery Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 18, at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in the Slate Hill Cemetery, Sharon Springs.

Contributions in Lester’s memory may be made to Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service Inc., PO Box 126, Canajoharie, NY 13317, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangments were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Laura M. Benjamin

NEW BERLIN — Laura Mae Benjamin, 88, of New Berlin passed away Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, with her loving family by her side.

Laura was born Oct. 24, 1915, the daughter of William and Martha Young. She spent her childhood in the East Springfield and Cherry Valley areas.

On July 29, 1935, she married Henry E. Benjamin in New Berlin. It was a blessed marriage of more than 42 years.

Laura was a devoted and loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who spent her life caring for all of her family. She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens and was a wonderful cook and baker. She truly loved providing delicious meals and desserts for her family, one of the ways she showed her love for them.

She worked for Champion Factory Outlet of Norwich for many years as a seamstress, retiring in 1981.

Laura was someone who thought of and cared for her family immensely, never asking anything for herself. Her love for her late husband, Henry (Hank), and for her family was shown throughout every day of her life.

She is survived by three daughters, Wanda Benjamin of New Berlin, Beatrice Bishop of East Guilford and Eleanor Armstrong of New Hartford; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 18, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

The family sincerely thanks the staff of the Chase Memorial Nursing Home for the wonderful, loving and compassionate care they provided Laura. They also thank St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and Father Chuck for all the support and help provided throughout the years she lived in New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Vaughn L. Smith

WEST WINFIELD — Vaughn L. Smith, 79, of South Road, entered into eternal rest Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, in Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin. He had the comfort of his family at his side.

He was born Jan. 7, 1925, in Burlington Flats, the son of the late Howard and Myrtle (Joslin) Smith. A lifelong area resident, he attended a one-room schoolhouse in Burlington Flats and graduated from Edmeston High School.

On Oct. 14, 1946, he married the former Bertha Hadsell in West Exeter. They moved to the family farm and raised six children. Most of his life was spent working on the family dairy farm and hauling milk. He retired in the early 1990s.

Vaughn had a strong love for the outdoors and nature. He especially enjoyed working in the woods. He was a member of a milker’s co-op and an honorary member of the Farm Bureau. During his leisure time he enjoyed bowling. Vaughn was a caring and helpful person who was happiest when surrounded by his family and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 58 years, Bertha; six children and their families, Bryan and Ruthann Smith of New Berlin, Lucy and John Schram of Manchester, Carolyn and Richard Patrick of West Winfield, Trudy and John Piscione of East Winfield, Bradley and Jackie Smith of Summerfield, Fla., and Wayne and Tracy Smith of West Winfield; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a sister, June Carey, of Burlington Fats.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marguerite Lowe.

Funeral services from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, will be at 1 p.m. today. The Rev. Charles Fitch, pastor of the Baptist Unadilla Forks Church, will officiate.

Expressions of sympathy in Vaughn’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Delon E. Travers

SOUTH EDMESTON — DeLon E. (Tex) Travers, 68, of South Edmeston died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica.

He was a member of the New Berlin Grange and held the office of gatekeeper for 12 years. He was also a member of the New York State Small Engines Association, the New York Railroad Association and the Burlington Flats Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his companion of 33 years, Minnie McLean of South Edmeston; a sister, Jean DuVall and her husband, Ed, and their daughter, Audra DuVall; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, as well as his extended family, Dave McLean, Mary Saunders, Judy Vibbard and Rita Andrews.

Calling hours were held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Alvera M. Costa

STAMFORD — Alvera Manewal Costa, 91, died suddenly Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, after suffering a stroke while at her home in Stamford.

Mrs. Costa was born in Hoboken, N.J., and grew up in Teaneck, N.J., where she was the first recipient of the Plaque Award, presented to the outstanding senior at Teaneck High School. She attended Barnard College and was a graduate of the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School.

A resident of Teaneck after she married, she was employed as the clerk of the municipal court for many years. In addition, she served as treasurer of the Teaneck Student Loan Association and was a Sunday school teacher at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Costa spent her retirement years at her beloved Odell Lake home in Stamford and in Lauderdale by-the-Sea, Fla. For the past year she was a resident of Quail Run Estates in Agawam, Mass.

She is survived by her daughter, Arlene Miller of Longmeadow, Mass.; her son, Thomas J. Costa Jr. of Paramus, N.J.; grandchildren, Tracey and Brad Miller, Mark and David Chase and Debbie Kram; son-in-law, David Miller; daughter-in-law, Robin Costa, and sister, Alice Kopf of Ramsey, N.J.

Her husband of 66 years, former Teaneck Mayor Thomas Costa, died in 2003.

A memorial service will be held later in Stamford.

Memorial donations may be made to the Stamford Fire Department, 111 Main St., Stamford, NY 12167 or to a charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Esther S. Rohland

ROTTERDAM — Esther Schermerhorn Rohland, 98, formerly of Oaklawn Avenue in Rotterdam, died Saturday morning, Oct. 16, 2004, at the Heritage Home for Women after a long illness.

Born in Rotterdam, she was the daughter of the late John and Edna Swatling. A graduate of Oneonta Normal School, she worked as a teacher in the Draper school district from 1924 until her retirement in the late 1970s.

Esther was a member of the Fisher United Methodist Church, the Professional Women’s Association and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Herbert Schermerhorn, in 1949 and her second husband, Reagle Rohland, in 1984.

She is survived by her brother, Charles L. Swatling of Rotterdam, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Fisher United Methodist Church, Helderberg Avenue, Schenectady.

Interment will be in Fishers Cemetery, Schenectady.

Contributions may be made in Esther’s memory to the Fisher United Methodist Church, 1913 Helderberg Ave., Schenectady, NY 12306.

Larry B. Mott

GOODYEAR LAKE — Larry B. Mott, 57, of the Goodyear Lake area passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at Bassett Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 13, 1946, the son of Arlene Byam and the grandson of the late Agnes and Claude Mott.

He married Donna Cower at the Main Street Baptist Church on July 4, 1970.

Larry is survived by his wife, Donna (Cower) Mott; son, Keith Mott, Schenevus; and daughter, Shawna Mott, who resides at home. Also surviving are his mother, Arlene Byam; sister, Marsha Zindle and husband Harry; nephews, Doug, David, Brian and Stephen Zindle, all of Massachusetts; and sister, Diane Gillotti, Iowa; father-in-law, Erwin Cower, Florida; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John Cower, Michigan, Ron Cower, Tennessee, Ray Cower, New Hampshire, Kathy Delberta, Oneonta, and their children.

Larry first started working at Brooks House of Bar-B-Q’s. He later served in the Army and in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. Upon returning from Vietnam, he worked as a trackman for the D&H Railroad for 28 years.

Larry’s life revolved around his wife, children and work.

A service for family and friends will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta or the Milford Emergency Squad, Milford. Services by Ottmann Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Douglas F. Wayman

HARTWICK — Douglas F. Wayman died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at his home in Hartwick. He was 78 years old, having been born at the former Thanksgiving Hospital on Grove Street in Cooperstown on May 13, 1926, the son of Floyd and Murl (Dyer) Wayman.

Doug was a lifelong resident of the "village" of Hartwick. He was an avid follower of NASCAR racing and professional golf. He was proud of the many different automobiles he had owned and could often be found reading automobile publications.

Doug owned a camp on Canadarago Lake for more than 20 years and spent numerous hours there fishing and taking his many friends for boat rides.

He was a faithful, conscientious and dedicated employee of Bruce Hall Inc., retiring from there in 1989 after 50 years, but returning thereafter as a part-time employee for an additional nine years.

After his retirement, he enjoyed his "neighborhood" snow removal, gardening and lawn work. Doug always took great interest in his neighbors and friends and their many projects.

He was, until his illness, an active senior citizen and over the past five years enthusiastically engaged in the Clark Sports Center’s winter walking program. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hartwick.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Frances (Zupevec) Wayman; his son, Kenneth Wayman of Cooperstown; and his daughter, Linda Alessi, her husband Dan, and their three sons, Brian, Benjamin and Matthew, all of Patchogue, Long Island. He is also survived by his twin brother, Dean Wayman of Middlefield and Dean’s wife, Maria; as well as by several cousins and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home on Pioneer Street in Cooperstown with the Rev. Laverne Saxer of the Hartwick Christian Church officiating. The family will be present from 1 p.m. until the time of the service to receive friends. Burial will follow the service in the Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those who desire to do so make contributions to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Marie D. Roads

PORT ROYAL, S.C. — Marie Dewey Roads, 91, widow of Alfred Roads, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at her residence.

Mrs. Roads was born July 19, 1913, in Newfoundland, a daughter of Walter and Debra Dewey.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Fazio of Port Royal and Ronald Fazio of Oneonta; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be held later in New York.

Copeland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nedra Mestyanek

MARGARETVILLE — Nedra Jean Mestyanek, 67, of Margaretville passed away Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in Kingston Hospital, Kingston.

She was born Jan. 11, 1937, the daughter of William Nelson DuMond and Helen Hull, in Margaretville.

She married Leo Mestyanek on Jan. 27, 1957, in Fleischmanns.

Nedra graduated from Fleischmanns High School in 1954. She was a telephone operator for New York Telephone in Kingston. She also worked for Ferrox Cube in Saugerties in production resource and delivery, Margaretville Memorial Hospital as a nurse’s aide, and the Motor Vehicle Office in Margaretville.

She was a member of the Senior Citizens; the American Legion Auxiliary; and the United Methodist Church, all in Margaretville.

Nedra is survived by her husband, Leo Mestyanek, Margaretville; three daughters, Sheryl Cudmore, Texas, Laurie Lutz, Texas, and Sandra Justice, South Carolina; eight grandchildren; and cousins.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at the funeral home, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Burial will be in Halcott Cemetery, Halcott Center.

In Nedra’s memory, donations may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary Post 216, Margaretville, NY 12455.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Helen Clyde Rich

HOBART — Helen Clyde Rich (Mrs. Wallace Rich), 89, of Hobart died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, after a long illness.

Born in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Alice and Francis Clyde.

She is survived by her daughters, Alice Moore Milewski (Richard), Scotia, Margaret Moore Triolo, (William), Milford; her son, Clayton L. Moore Jr. (Susan), Ithaca; and a stepson, Wallace M. Rich (Doris), Hobart; as well as by eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Helen was predeceased by husbands Clayton L. Moore and Wallace H. Rich.

Helen graduated from SUNY Albany with a degree in English. She dedicated her professional life to working with young people, as a teacher in a one-room school in Hoosic and as the senior high school English teacher and faculty adviser in the South Kortright Central School System.

Helen was a member of the Hobart Presbyterian Church and several community groups.

Internment will be held at the Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. A memorial service will be held on the same date at 2 p.m. at the Hobart Presbyterian Church. Family and friends are cordially invited. A reception will immediately follow in the church.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Leatherstocking Region Office, Health Center, Room 113, 243 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Humane Society, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
