Eunice W. Smith

WORCESTER — Eunice W. Smith left her mortal body on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, to the waiting arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to dwell in His house forever. Eunice was two days shy of her 91st birthday.

Before moving to the Schohanna Adult Rest Home in Worcester, she lived on Long Island for 89 years.

One of eight children (six sisters and one brother, all deceased), Eunice was born at home in Rockville Centre on Oct. 22, 1913, to William James and Anna (Payne) Cochrane.

She was married to George M. Smith, who predeceased her in 1967.

Eunice is survived by three of her four children, the Rev. George D. Smith, Eunice Trudy Smith and Lynnette D. Stephan. A son, William J. Smith, went home to be with the Lord in 1987.

Eunice is also survived by eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a longtime friend, Herman Stubbe.

Eunice loved cooking, sketching, oil painting and sewing. She will best be remembered for her amazing pot roast, roast chicken dinners, homemade apple pies and fudge, as well as her love for making stuffed animals and dolls. She also enjoyed gardening and making sure all the wild birds on Long Island were well -fed.

She continued her delight in watching birds by strategically placing two feeders outside the lovely bay window of the Schohanna Adult Rest Home.

A private service for family and caregivers will be held graveside at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements are made by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Margaret MacKay

MARGARETVILLE — Margaret MacKay, 85, of Margaretville died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born on Dec. 26, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Margaret married Hugh Alan MacKay. He died in 1972.

Margaret graduated in 1934. She was employed by State Farm Insurance Company in Pennsylvania. When she retired from there she moved to Ocean City, N.J., and was employed by Stanton Department Store.

In 1987, she moved to Margaretville and lived on East Hubbell Hill Road.

Margaret is survived by two sons and their wives, Robert and Lucy MacKay and Richard and Judy MacKay; and five grandchildren, Amie, Scott, Cynthia, Janet and Jimmy.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, Pa.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

June Welton

WALTON — June Welton, 79, a lifelong resident of Walton passed away Thursday morning in the Delaware Valley Hospital after a long illness.

June was born in Walton on July 1, 1925, the daughter of the late Horace and Ellen Smith Schloss. She was educated in local schools.

She married Allen E. "Dick" Welton on June 29, 1946, in a double wedding with her twin sister, Jean, who married Dick’s brother, Ralph.

June and her husband, Dick, owned and operated Walton TV Sales and Service.

June was a 60-plus member of the Walton United Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Walton Fire Department, serving as its president for many years, a Girl Scout troop leader for 11 years and a former member of the Delaware Lancers Drum and Bugel Corp.

She and her family loved to hunt and fish while camping, she also loved to read and would "devour" novels, sometimes as many as two or three a week. She also enjoyed cross stitching.

June is survived by her loving husband, Dick; two children, a daughter, Elaine B. Reynolds and her husband, William, of San Antonio, Texas, and a son, John T. Welton of Walton; three grandchildren, Michele, Micah and William H. Reynolds IV; two sisters, Marion Pomeroy and Marjorie Kite, both of Walton; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her twin sister, Jean Welton, in 1996.

Friends and family may call at Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the United Presbyterian Church, Walton. Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in June’s memory may be made to Walton EMS, Countryside Care Center or the United Presbyterian Church. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available at the funeral home.

Pamela Ann Barnes

PITTSFIELD — Miss Pamela Ann Barnes, 56, of the Silver Lake community in the Town of Pittsfield, passed away Wednesday evening, Oct. 20, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Pam was born on Jan. 29, 1948, in Syracuse, a daughter of the late Charles Arthur Barnes and Marguerita Winola Patrick Barnes.

For the past 10 years she had resided with Gerald and Anna Belle Pittsley at their home near Silver Lake in the Town of Pittsfield. Prior to this Pam lived in Bradenton, Fla., with her parents.

Pam is survived by her sister, Mrs. Winnie Denny-Smith and her husband, Raymond F. Smith, of Cooperstown; one niece and one nephew; and several cousins.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the Truxton Rural Cemetery in Truxton.

Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial gifts to The Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Betty Conway

MOUNT UPTON — Betty Conway, 68, of Mount Upton passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born Dec. 8, 1935, to the late Kenneth and Eska (Bareagher) Beilby in Hale Eddy.

She is survived by her two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bobby Conway Jr. and Randy and Wendy Conway; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Bonnie Tripp, Teresa and Russ Straka, Rose and Jimmy Davis, Robin and Dan Friedel and Kim Conway; brother, Francis Beilby; ex-husband, Bobby Conway Sr.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, when the family will be in attendance at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Mount Upton, officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Upton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.

Gladys L. Hill

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Gladys Lamond Hill, born of David Thomas and Margaret Lamond on May 19, 1922, in Staten Island. Longtime resident of Stamford. Ascended into heaven on Oct. 20, 2004, after 56 years of walking hand in hand in a loving and devoted marriage to Gerhard William Hill.

She was the loving mother of Christine Becker and husband Carl F. Becker, Gerhard William Hill Jr. and wife Diane Hill, Pamela Vogel and husband John Vogel, Paul Philip Hill, and Jennifer Hill, and grandmother of Gerhard William Hill III and wife Elizabeth Hill, Rebecca Hill, Valerie Becker and husband Ross McKillop, Jonathan Becker, Michael Vogel and Jennifer Vogel.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology at Wagner College, she received her registered nurse degree at Wagner School of Nursing. She subsequently served as a nurse at Staten Island Hospital and taught nursing at Upstate Medical Center and Alfred University. She also served on the state Board of Nurse Licensing in New York State.

Lady of grace that selflessly brought comfort and joy to all who were fortunate to have known her. Servant of God, daughter, sister, wife and mother, grandmother, extended family member, friend, nurse, teacher and role model. She will be missed and remembered affectionately by a wide host of family and friends.

Gladys L. Hill

Christopher Sarter

STAMFORD — Christopher Wayne Sarter Sr., 63, of Stamford, formerly of Howard Beach, died unexpectedly at home Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004.

Christopher was born Sept. 25, 1941, in Queens, the son of Wendaline and Sara (Hallahan) Sarter.

He is survived by his wife of 35 happy years, Beatrice (Bunny); their six children, the oldest, Christopher W. Sarter Jr., 33, and daughter-in-law Gina, Catherine S. Sarter, 26, Sean T. Sarter, 24, Terrence M. Sarter, 22, Daniel R. Sarter, 19, and Meagan M. Sarter, 14; and his sisters-in-law, Janet Sarter, Anna Hallahan, Margaret and husband Michael Bame, and Rosemarie Norman and their children. Also many nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Howard Sarter and Richard Sarter.

He was a loved man by many. He was a parent advocate at Stamford Central School and a retired plumber in Local 2 of New York.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Second Degree, Howard Beach Rod and Gun Club, Stamford Fire Department and a member of the Sacred Heart Church.

He enjoyed many things, including fishing, hunting, opera and most of all, quality time with his loving family and friends.

Christopher was a consoling shoulder and a role model father for many. If anybody needed anything or just someone to talk to they knew they could go to Papa Sarter.

Friends may pay their respects at a Mass of Christian burial that will be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Cournoyer at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Carousel Children’s Services, 34570 State Highway 10, Walton, NY 13856 and/or the Stamford Fire Department, Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Katherine Hobbie

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Katherine E. Hobbie, 98, retired professor and dean of professional studies at the State University College at Oneonta, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Chester County Hospital, West Chester, Pa.

She lived in Lewiston after her retirement in 1971, and moved to Kendal at Longwood in Kennett Square, Pa., in October 1985.

Born July 27, 1906, Dr. Hobbie was raised in Tonawanda and Lewiston. She graduated from the Buffalo Seminary. She had a bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College, a Master of Arts degree from New York University and Doctor of Education degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She also did graduate study at Union Theological Seminary and the University of Buffalo.

Her teaching career, before joining the SUCO faculty, included resident teaching at the American School for Moslem Girls in Damascus, Syria, from 1930 to 1931, teaching in public and private schools of New York state from 1932 to 1943, and teaching and supervising of student teachers in elementary and secondary schools for the War Relocation Authority in Tule Lake, Calif., from 1943 to 1945.

She traveled extensively in Africa, Asia, Europe and Canada. She participated in professional organizations on a statewide and local level. She was active in the League of Women Voters, taught church school for many years at the Unitarian Universalist Church, and participated in environmental organizations such as Coastal Zone Management board.

In Pennsylvania, she served on the board of La Communidad Hispana and was treasurer of the local Democratic National Committee. While at Kendal she was active in Great Decisions, Great Books discussion group, Kendal Singers, Safety Committee and Horticulture Committee. She enjoyed attending her 75th reunion at Wellesley College in 2003.

Kate leaves behind nine nieces, two nephews and their families, who are much richer for her presence, influence, love of nature and value of social justice.

A memorial service will be held at Kendal at Longwood on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m.

Beekman Cox Cannon

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Beekman Cox Cannon, husband of the late Margaret, uncle of Julia C. Wertenbaker, Urling C. Kingery and Henry Brevoort Cannon III, and great-uncle of six great-nieces and -nephews.

Professor emeritus of music at Yale, past master of Jonathan Edwards College, longtime director and past president of the New Haven Symphony, founding trustee of the Glimmerglass Opera, and past president and trustee of The Wrexham Foundation. Died at 92 at his home in New Haven on Oct. 19, 2004.

A funeral service will be held at Christ Church at 84 Broadway in New Haven on Monday, Oct. 25 at 3:30 p.m., with a reception to follow at the Great Hall in Jonathan Edwards College. There will be a memorial service at Grace Church, 32 Montgomery St., in Cherry Valley on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Jonathan Edwards Trust, care of The Master’s Office, PO Box 8220, New Haven, CT 06520-8220, or to the Glimmerglass Opera, PO Box 191, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Margaret Amadon

DAVENPORT CENTER — Margaret E. "Peg" Amadon, 81, of Davenport Center passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born March 14, 1923, in Utica, the daughter of John Wesley and Margaret Elizabeth (Herron) Merritt.

Peg married Robert Amadon on June 14, 1947, in Delhi.

She worked at Bendix-Scintilla in Sidney during World War II. She then worked as secretary of the poultry department at Cornell University and for 19 years as a teacher’s aide at Charlotte Valley Central School until her retirement. Peg and Bob operated Bob’s Greenhouse in Davenport Center from 1963 until 1996.

Peg had a love for traveling. With Bob, they traveled to 46 out of the 50 states. She also enjoyed camping, antiques, fishing and playing cards with her grandchildren. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Robert Amadon of Davenport Center; her two daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Mark Wright of Davenport Center and Debbie and Michael Meyer of East Meredith; her two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Pamela Amadon of Davenport Center and Doug and Mary Amadon of East Meredith; her seven grandchildren, Jennifer Wright of Otego, Jeromy Wright of Davenport Center, Mathew Yorganson of Meridale, Gregory Meyer of East Meredith, Kim and Brian Sweet of Asheboro, N.C., Brad and Tasha Amadon of Davenport Center, and Erin Amadon of East Meredith; one stepgrandson, Max Meyer of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; three great-grandchildren, Samantha and Dylan Sweet and Nathan Amadon; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Zelle Meyer; several nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as her many special caregivers, staff and friends at Countryside Care Center and Catskill Area Hospice.

Peg was predeceased by her granddaughter, Tabitha Yorganson, in 1990; her sister, Helen Seamon; and two brothers, Jack and Bill Merritt.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

The family will be present at the funeral home from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 25, 2004, for those who wish to call.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Tabitha Lee Yorganson Scholarship Fund, care of Debbie Meyer, 10059 Elk Creek Road, East Meredith, NY 13757 in loving memory of Margaret E. "Peg" Amadon.

Roy E. Chambers

MORRIS — Roy E. Chambers Sr. of Morris died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at his home in Morris.

He was born April 16, 1950, in Clarksburg, W.Va., the son of Marvin Edgar Chambers and Beatrice H. (Chaplik) Chambers.

He was married to Barbara Stachina on May 16, 1970, at the United States Naval Station in Washington, D.C. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam, where he received numerous decorations including the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with a Palm, and the Meritorious Unit Citation. He was also detailed to the H&S Company Marine Barracks, Washington, where he was a member of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon and the White House Honor Guard.

He had operated his own auto-repair business as well as being employed by various auto-repair garages in Virginia and in Oneonta and Norwich.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as a fan of NASCAR and the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. He enjoyed coaching youth sports on the field and off the field, behind the scenes. He was a strong advocate of service veterans’ rights and benefits.

Roy was a member of the Marine Corps League, life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 3, Roanoke, Va., the American Legion Post 1135 of Morris, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2782 of Norwich, National Rifle Association and the Morris Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Morris; his son, Roy E. Chambers and wife, Terra, of Roanoke; his mother, Beatrice H. Chaplik and husband, Nick, of Newland, N.C.; a brother, Marvin Chambers and wife, Vickie, of Blue Ridge, Va.; three sisters, Nancy Roberts and husband, Bev, of Salem, Va., Ann Ford and husband, Steve, of Ashland, Va., and Judy Garrett of Roanoke, as well as his brother-in-law, John Stachina and wife, Carolyn, of Oneonta; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Colleen; his father, Marvin E. Chambers; his grandparents, Okey Edward Kerns and Grace Opal and George Roy Pickens and Gladys Elizabeth.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris, with the Rev. Robert E. Witt Jr., officiating.

Graveside services will be at a later date and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Morris Fire Department or Emergency Squad or a veterans service organization in the area.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Arthur W. Peter

BURLINGTON FLATS — Arthur W. Peter, 76, of Burlington Flats passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at the M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born in Brooklyn on July 4, 1928, the son of Robert and Annie Florence (West) Peter.

On Oct. 9, 1948, he married Lorraine Brown, who survives.

Arthur served his country as a Merchant Marine seaman, and in the Army Air Corps and the United States Air Force. He served in the Pacific near the end of World War II and in Korea. He was retired from Utica Corp. as a journeyman maintenance machinist and member of Machinist Union No. 1501.

He had also served as town justice of the town of Burlington for many years.

He enjoyed woodworking, bird-watching and feeding, and at one time golf and fishing.

He will be most remembered for his love of children and especially his grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart.

In addition to his wife, Lorraine, Arthur is survived by his children, Deborah Peter, Theresa and Bill Cursh and Tracy and Wayne Smith and his special chosen children, Michael Koch and Pam Benjamin; his grandchildren, Kara Peter, Andrea Cursh, Courtney Smith, Ethan Peter-Smith and Marshall Smith; his sisters, Laura Bennett of Oneida and Florence and George Robinson of Oneida; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Arthur was predeceased by an infant son.

Graveside funeral services with military honors for Arthur will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Burlington Flats Cemetery with the Rev. William Highfield officiating.

There will be no public calling hours.
