Santa Eva DeShaw

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — Santa Eva DeShaw, 79, of Hendersonville passed away Monday, Oct. 24, 2004.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. DeShaw.

Eva is survived by her daughter, Joann Maggart of Hendersonville; her sons, Mark DeShaw of Nashville, Tenn., and Thomas DeShaw of Lake Alfred, Fla.; brothers, Angelo Battista and Benn Battista of Winter Park, Fla.; and three grandsons.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26, 2004, at the Hendersonville Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at the funeral home with Father William Bevington officiating. Family and friends served as pallbearers. Entombment is at Hendersonville memory Gardens Chapel of Memories.

Arrangements were by the Hendersonville Memory Gardens and Funeral Home, 358 Johnny Cash Parkway, Hendersonville, TN 37075, (615) 824-3855.

Sandra E. Walling

MORRIS — Sandra Elise Walling, 65, of Morris died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at her home with her family at her side after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Feb. 2, 1939, in Laurens, the daughter of Bernhardt and Ruth (Gregory) Jacobsen.

She married Kenneth Walling on June 3, 1961, in the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris.

She had been employed by the Wilber National Bank, Oneonta Credit Bureau, Oneonta Oil & Fuel Company, and Otsego A.R.C. for 15 years and at the New Berlin Central School as a secretary. She had also worked as a waitress at the Arc and Oasis restaurants in her younger years.

Sandy enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and tending to her flowers in her garden. She was a lifelong member of the Zion Episcopal Church and the E.C.W. (Episcopal Church Women) of the church, as well as being a very active member of the choir. She was also a member of the CJ Monday Morning golf league.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth, of Morris; her children, Elisse Rehrmann and husband Gordon of Morris, Carolyn Buisman and husband Peter of Honeoye Falls, and Michael Walling and wife Diane of Morris; her grandchildren, Gregory and Ryan Buisman and Emily and Jacob Walling. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Marion Dodge, Norman Jacobsen and Alma Pickens, all of Morris, Karl Jacobsen of Schoharie, and Clair Jacobsen of West Laurens; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Frederick Jacobsen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris with the Rev. Robert E. Witt Jr., officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris. The family will receive friends at the Zion Parish House following the burial on Friday.

Calling hours will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or Zion Episcopal Church, Box 156, Morris, NY 13808 in Sandy’s memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Eleanor J. Lee

CLIFTON PARK — Eleanor J. Lee, 71, formerly of Clifton Park, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Hoosick Falls Health Center.

She was born in Southampton on Sept. 27, 1933, the daughter of the late Howard and Helen Bruce.

Eleanor was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and knitting. She was a member of the Clifton Park United Methodist Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Halfmoon.

Eleanor is survived by three children, Michael Lee of Great Lakes, Ill., Rebecca Lee-DiPace of Albany and Deborah Miller of Ballston Spa; two sisters, Dorothy Hicock of Garrattsville and Marion Salisbury of Cooperstown; two brothers, Frank Bruce of West Virginia and Calvin Bruce of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Alex, Clifford and Samantha; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High St., Ballston Spa. Calling hours will precede the service from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Memory’s Garden, Colonie.

Memorial contributions may be made to Clifton Park United Methodist Church, 10 Old Plank Road, Clifton Park, NY 12065.

Doris Mott

SOUTH VALLEY — Mrs. Doris Mott, 99, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at her home, with her loving family present, after a long, rich, full life.

She was born Sept. 12, 1905, in the town of Roseboom, the daughter of Emmit and Belle (VanBussom) Mabie.

On Aug. 21, 1929, she married Lester Mott in Montgomery. She lived on the family farm all her life and was a teacher at DeRuyter Central and Cherry Valley Central schools until her retirement.

Doris was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers and South Valley Women’s Club.

Survivors include grandchildren, Robin Mott, Belinda Mott, Bryan Mott, Elizabeth Mott and Michael Mott; great-grandchildren, Kyle Mead, Cassidy Marchev, Mason Schliesman, Madeline Godman, James Mott, Courtney Maine, Melissa Kehoe, Jason Kehoe and Cassandra Mott; daughters-in-law, Marty Mott and Christine Mott; extended family members, Chris Peretin and daughters Valerie, Veronica and Christa, and Brian Schultz.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lester Mott, and a son, James Mott.

A private ceremony will be held at home and a celebration of her life will be announced.

Contributions in Doris’ memory can be made to the First Christian Church, South Valley; South Valley Women’s Club; or your favorite Pet Rescue.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Patrick A. Tanner

BAINBRIDGE — Patrick A. Tanner, 40, of 113 K Parker Road, Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, Oct. 26, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Sept. 26, 1964, in Sidney, the son of Joseph and Marion Robinson Tanner Sr.

On July 1, 2002, he married Veronica Seeley in Sidney.

Patrick was a well-known auto mechanic in the Tri-Town area. He served his country in the United States Army from 1981 to 1988. He was a member of the Charles L. Jacobi Post No. 183 American Legion, Sidney.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica A. Tanner of Bainbridge; daughter, Patricia Tanner of Harpursville; son, Alex Tanner of Harpursville; father, Joseph Tanner of Afton; mother, Marion Robinson of Bainbridge; brother, Joseph "Butch" Tanner Jr. of Afton; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Loretta and Joseph McMillion of Chattanooga, Tenn., Cathy L. Tanner of Afton, Heather and Allan Shepard of Afton, Claudia Surowka of Sidney, and Sherry and Jeff Winans of Kirkwood; stepdaughter, Kathy Barnes of New Berlin; stepson, Calabe Barnes of Mount Upton; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Zellman of White Plains; two brothers-in-law, Richard Seeley of Hawaii and John Zellman of Brooklyn; and grandmother-in-law, Ann Campbell of White Plains. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Rita Tanner, and a brother, George Tanner, predeceased their brother.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with Pastor Kelvin McKnight of the Sidney Circle Drive Alliance Church officiating.

Friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of the services at 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be at the family’s convenience in the Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.

Memorial gifts may be made to the M&T Bank, 5Mile Point Plaza, Kirkwood, NY for the care and education of his children.

Edward Meller

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Edward Meller, 82, a resident of Eastview Drive, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, Oct. 21, 2004, at his home.

Mr. Meller was born in Poland on May 6, 1922. He was the son of the late Frank and Anna (Baronowski) Meller.

During World War II, he served as a combat veteran in the Polish Army.

He came to New York City in 1951, where he established Meller Electric Company. After living in Great Neck for 17 years, he retired to Bennington in September 1984, where he enjoyed living in Vermont.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Margaret Meller; a daughter, Linda, and her spouse, Russell Lan; a son, Raymond, and his spouse, Pamela Meller; and a much-loved granddaughter, Miranda Lan.

There will be no services or calling hours.

Should friends desire, memorial gifts in memory of Mr. Meller may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Second Chance Animal Shelter, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

Martha F. Gorman

DAVENPORT — Martha Frances Gorman, 68, formerly of Cooperstown, passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Margaret and John Aguiar.

She was born in Miami, Fla., on Sept. 3, 1936, the daughter of Anthony Joseph and Margaret (McKenna) Camastra.

She married Gerald Francis Gorman on Nov. 28, 1956. He predeceased her Dec. 28, 1983.

She had been employed at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I., as the administrator of medical oncology and radiation therapy; at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown as the manager of the research institute; and most recently at Hope Foundation in Melbourne, Fla., as a project administrator and grant writer.

She is survived by her four daughters, Mary Barker and her husband, Geoffrey, of Hong Kong, Margaret Aguiar and her husband, John, of Davenport, Julie Wright and Ike Loveless of Oneonta, and Janet Fitzgerald and her husband, Stephen, of Providence, R.I.; grandchildren, Anthony and Caroline Barker, Lisa Starrett, Sherie Blake, Tracey Hudspath, Preston, Harrison and Tia Wright; great-grandchildren Kyle Aguiar, Amanda and Kristen Blake, John, Michelle and Amber Starrett; and her brother, Peter Portz of Fernandina Beach, Ga.

She was predeceased by her half brothers John, Leo and Arthur Portz.

Calling hours will be at the funeral home from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at which time the family will be in attendance. A funeral service will be offered at 4 p.m. Saturday, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Doris H. Waterman

HARPERSFIELD — Doris Hitchcock Waterman, 97, of Harpersfield passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at home after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 15, 1907, in Lebanon, the daughter of Nathaniel and Lydia (Pendorf) Hitchcock.

She married Paul F. Waterman on July 15, 1933, in Hamilton. He predeceased her.

A resident of the area for 52 years, Mrs. Waterman was a graduate of Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, in the Class of 1930.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford where she served as the church organist for many years.

A loving mother and teacher, she also was an active volunteer in the community, but many students will fondly recall the many piano lessons they enjoyed with her over numerous years.

She is survived by five children, Mrs. Priscilla Fuller, Mr. Bruce Waterman, Mrs. Lila Serapilio, Mrs. Margaret Oswald, Mrs. Natalie Lemmon; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Patricia Shafer officiating.

The family will be in attendance at calling hours, which will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will follow the service at North Kortright Cemetery, North Kortright.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the First Presbyterian Church, Stamford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Walter A. Gorka

ANDES — Walter A. Gorka, 75, of Andes passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

Walter was born April 28, 1929, in Newark, N.J., the son of Albert and Marie (Burhart) Gorka.

He was married to Lorraine Nothstein for 36 years.

He served in the United States Air Force from Dec. 29, 1948, to Oct. 31, 1952. Walter was employed as a supervisor for Dictograph in Florham Park, N.J. He retired in 1990.

He owned his home in Andes since 1963. It became his full-time residence in 1992.

Walter was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville, the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Tremperskill Rod & Gun Club.

Walter is survived by his wife, Lorraine Gorka, Andes; son, William Gorka; three daughters, Theresa Loud, Clinton, N.J., Catherine and Nichole Gorka, San Jose, Calif.; granddaughter, Gabrielle; brother, Frank Gorka, Union, N.J.; and sister, Helen Chessick, Union, N.J.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at the Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell as celebrant. Burial will be in Andes Cemetery, Andes.

In memory of Walter A. Gorka, donations may be sent to the Andes Ambulance Fund or the Margaretville Hospital Ambulance Fund.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Gary E. Nebauer

MARYLAND — Gary E. Nebauer, 48, of Maryland, formerly of Middleburgh, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born in Floral Park on April 25, 1956, a son of Edmund and Evelyn Wieduwilt Nebauer.

Mr. Nebauer is survived by his parents; brother, Chris (Stacey) Nebauer, Schenectady; sisters, Linda (Harold) Guest, Huntersland, and Laurie (John) Rotondaro, Colonie; nieces, Cheryl, Sara, Elena Guest and Katelyn, Jaqueline Rotondaro and Patrishia Nebauer; nephews, Brandon and Justin Nebauer; as well as his fiancee, Pamela Stuart, and her family, John, Alicia, Sean, Dante, Andrew and Ian.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at the Palmer & Shaylor Inc. Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, with a funeral service at 8 p.m., with the Rev. Carol Coltrain of the Huntersland United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Middleburgh Cemetery.

Robert Bookhout

ONEONTA — Robert M. Bookhout, 83, of Oneonta died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at his home.

He was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Oneonta, the son of I. Jay and Lila (Bell) Bookhout.

He married Wahneta Crawford on March 2, 1947, in the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta.

Bob was a 1939 graduate of Oneonta High School as well as a 1943 graduate of Amherst College in Amherst, Mass.

Bob’s first job was as a licensed funeral director at the Bookhout Funeral Home. He was the founder and president of Bookhout Agency Inc. He maintained that position until his retirement in 1995.

While overseeing the day-to-day operations of the insurance agency, Bob developed a real-estate business as well as a travel agency. During this time he and his wife were able to travel to most places throughout the world.

Bob was the charter president of the Oneonta Jaycees in 1947. He was also a member of the Rotary Club from 1945 until the present. Bob served as president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1970. He was also a member of the BPOE Elks Club of Oneonta as well as a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Oneonta Country Club.

One of Bob’s proudest achievements was serving as chairman of the committee that opened the Oneonta Municipal Airport. In his retirement years his greatest joys were spending time with his grandchildren (Grandpa’s angels) as well as Tuesday lunches with his old friends, playing with his dog Katie, attending Colgate football games, his wife’s fine cooking and a Manhattan in a tall glass.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wahneta, of Oneonta; his children, David A. Bookhout and his wife, Lynne, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Bruce F. Bookhout and his wife, Patricia, of Sidney Center, his daughter, Allison Jay Bookhout and her husband, Bruce Von Holtz, of Oneonta; daughter-in-law, Debra S. Bookhout of Ithaca; his grandchildren, Robert M. Bookhout and his fiance, Megan Mundy, of Buena Park, Calif., Catherine M. Bookhout of Winston-Salem, N.C., David A. Bookhout of Chapel Hill, N.C., Megan K. Bookhout of Chapel Hill, N.C., Rebecca M. Bookhout and Rachel L. Bookhout of Sidney Center; nieces, nephews and many friends; as well as his dog, Katie.

His son, Robert D. Bookhout, predeceased him on Nov. 14, 2003, and his parents, I. Jay and Lila (Bell) Bookhout, predeceased him as well. Three brothers and a sister also predeceased Bob.

Funeral services for Robert M. Bookhout will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s Memory to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York, Leatherstocking Region Office, State University College at Oneonta, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Susquehanna SPCA, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Burdette A. Evans

ONEONTA — Burdette A. Evans, 86, of Oneonta died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at the A. O. Fox Nursing Home after a long illness.

Burdette was born Sept. 25, 1918, to Austin and Nellie (Bentley) Evans in Westford.

He was known as "Lefty" to many of his friends. He loved the outdoors, enjoyed life to the fullest, loved going to the races and loved dancing.

He worked for General Electric in Schenectady as a crane operator for many years and later went to work for the former Homer Folks Hospital in Oneonta. He then owned a painting business for a number of years.

Burdette was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945. While there, he received a Good Conduct medal, American Defense Service medal and Distinguished Unit Badge and European-African-Middle Eastern Service medal. He was an also a member of the Laurens American Legion.

Burdette was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Carson, whom he married in January 1947.

He is survived by his significant other, Muriel Ross of Oneonta; his nephew, Kenneth Knutsen of Howes Cave; his niece, Patricia Barker of Georgia; and many other nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, in the Laurens Cemetery, Laurens, with the Rev. Don Klobb, pastor of the Wesleyan Church of Cobleskill, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13280, in loving memory of Burdette A. Evans.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.
