Heinz G. Schiippel

WALTON — Heinz G. Schiippel, 84, of New Milford, Pa., formerly of Walton, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, after being stricken.

Heinz was born in Kemtau, Germany, on July 28, 1920, the son of the late Albert and Meta Roscher Schiippel.

He married Phyllis Trask at Readburn Church on April 10, 1965.

He was self-employed on the Schiippel Bros. Farm. He loved to bowl and Alpine ski.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two children, son Richard A. Schiipple of Walton; and a daughter, Heidi, and her husband, Rev. Mark Stento, of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Alexander, Derek and Rachel Stento; one sister, Dorothy Meyers of Walton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, many from Germany.

He was predeceased by a brother, Werner Schiippel.

Friends and family may call Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where services will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Mark A. Stento, his son-in-law, officiating.

Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Charles Rene LaTour

ROME — Charles Rene LaTour, 47, of Rome, passed away Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

He was born in Norwich on Dec. 28, 1956, son of Jean and Osceola LaTour of Morris.

He is survived by three children, Joshua LaTour of Topeka, Kan., and Derrick and Cassandra LaTour of Morris. He is also survived by three sisters, Charlene Higgins and husband James of Oneonta, Sis Lull and husband James of Gilbertsville and Marie LaTour of New Hartford; and two nephews and a niece.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Robert Bookhout

ONEONTA — Robert M. Bookhout, 83, of Oneonta died peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 29, 2004, at his home.

He was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Oneonta, the son of I. Jay and Lila (Bell) Bookhout.

He married Wahneta Crawford on March 2, 1947, in the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta.

Bob was a 1939 graduate of Oneonta High School and a 1943 graduate of Amherst College in Amherst, Mass.

Bob’s first job was as a licensed funeral director at the Bookhout Funeral Home. He was the founder and president of Bookhout Agency, Inc. He maintained that position until his retirement in 1995. While overseeing the day-to-day operations of the insurance agency, Bob developed a real estate business and travel agency. During this time he and his wife were able to travel to most places throughout the world.

Bob was the charter president of the Oneonta Jaycees in 1947. He was also a member of the Rotary Club from 1945 until the present. Bob served as president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1970. He was also a member of the BPOE Elks Club of Oneonta as well as a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Oneonta Country Club. One of Bob’s proudest achievements was being chairman of the committee that opened the Oneonta Municipal Airport.

In his retirement years his greatest joys were spending time with his grandchildren (Grandpa’s Angels), Tuesday lunches with his old friends, playing with his dog Katie, attending Colgate football games, his wife’s fine cooking, and a Manhattan in a tall glass.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wahneta, of Oneonta; his children, David A. Bookhout and his wife, Lynne, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Bruce F. Bookhout and his wife, Patricia, of Sidney Center, his daughter, Allison Jay Bookhout, and her husband, Bruce Von Holtz, of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Robert M. Bookhout and his fiancee, Megan Mundy, of Buena Park, Calif., Catherine M. Bookhout of Winston-Salem, N.C., David A. Bookhout of Chapel Hill, N.C., Christine E. Bookhout of Chapel Hill, N.C., Megan K. Bookhout of Chapel Hill, N.C., Rebecca J. Bookhout and Rachel L. Bookhout of Sidney Center; nieces, nephews and many friends, as well as his dog, Katie.

His son, Robert D. Bookhout, predeceased him on Nov. 14, 2003, and his parents I. Jay and Lila (Bell) Bookhout predeceased him as well. Three brothers and a sister also predeceased Bob.

Funeral services for Robert M. Bookhout will be at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 1, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 10 a.m., at which time the family will be in attendance, until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York, Leatherstocking Region Office, State University at Oneonta, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Susquehanna SPCA, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Ronald L. Hunt

DECATUR — Ronald L. Hunt, 73, passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born March 11, 1931, in Milltown, N.J., the son of Raymond L. and Grace M. (DeHart) Hunt. In 1941, the family moved to East Worcester. Ron attended the Calcutta one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Worcester Central School, Class of 1949, and SUNY Cobleskill, Class of 1951.

In 1952, he purchased a dairy farm in Decatur, which he was managing full-time with the help of his oldest sun Frederick.

Ron married Nancy Crapser on March 5, 1960, at the Summit United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the East Worcester United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Council and was a trustee; he was the Decatur supervisor from 1956-1961; was a 50-year member of the Worcester Grange and a member of the Rotary International. He also served on the Worcester School Board for 10 years, from 1994-2004, and was president for several years.

Ron was employed as a school bus driver for 16 years, first at the Richmondville Central School and then for Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District. He was a charter coach driver for K&K Busline and Eastern Travels.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hunt; four sons, Frederick J. Hunt, Ronald Lowell and his wife, Jamie, Hunt, Thomas R. and his wife, Brenda, Hunt and Robert E. Hunt, all of Worcester; two daughters, Rhonda and her husband, David, Ferris and Heather and her husband, Stephen, Fancher, all of Worcester; 10 grandchildren, Joe, Danielle, Travis, Lance, Joshua, Thomas, Darren, Matthew, Trevor and Connor; his brother, Bill and his wife, Carrie, Hunt; bother-in-law, Ronald and his wife Joan Crapser; his sister-in-law, Brenda and her husband, Burr Fancher; several nephews and nieces; and many great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; a grandson, Michael David Ferris; a sister, Mary Elizabeth (Betty), and her husband, Charles R. Kodra Sr., and their son, Charles Richard Kodra Jr.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at the East Worcester United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin, pastor, and the Rev. Jane Pykus, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple View Cemetery in East Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the East Worcester United Methodist Church, PO Box 665, East Worcester, NY 12064.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Kimberly Aldrich

OTEGO — Kimberly K. Aldrich, 44, of Otego passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born April 2, 1960, in Bainbridge, Md., the daughter of Mason J. and Viola M. (Horton) Aldrich.

Kimberly attended the ARC Otsego Day Treatment Program for almost 20 years, where she was affectionately known as "Sunshine."

She was a member of the Otego Presbyterian Church. Kimberly enjoyed playing cards, working on jigsaw puzzles, games and especially word-search puzzles.

No matter where Kimberly went, she always seemed to touch people in a very special way. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.

Kimberly is survived by her loving and devoted mother, Viola Aldrich, of Otego; her brother, Michael Aldrich and his wife, Sheila; along with her very special niece, Abby Aldrich of Ravenna, Ohio; her uncle, Duane Horton and his wife, Mary, of Sherburne; her uncle, Ezra Horton and his wife, Eleanor, of Colorado Springs; her uncle, Ovid Horton and his wife, Marie, of Houston; a special cousin, Timothy Horton of Durham, N.H.; as well as several other cousins; special friends, Roger Angell of Oneonta, Carole Chapman and family of Richmond, Va., and Penny Groves of Oneonta.

Her father, Mason J. Aldrich, master chief petty officer, predeceased her.

Funeral services for Kimberly K. Aldrich will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, in the Otego Presbyterian Church, River Street, Otego, with the Rev. Ned Lintern, pastor, officiating. Burial and committal services will follow in the West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., in Otego from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ARC Otsego, 35 Academy St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825 in Kimberly’s memory.

John G. Huckins

MILFORD — Dr. John Gordon Huckins, 73, of Milford died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 7, 1931, in Keene, N.H., he was the son of the late Lt. Col. John H. Huckins and the late Helen (Gordon) Merill. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Huckins.

John was a 1948 graduate of Bel Air High School, Bel Air, Md.

He served in the United States Air Force as a sergeant from 1952-1956. He served in the Korean War as a medic. After serving in the Air Force, he attended and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1963.

He earned a doctorate degree for veterinary medicine. He owned his veterinary practice in Street, Md., from 1971-1984. He was employed by the USDA from 1984-1992, retired as a meat inspector in 1992 and moved to Milford.

John was a member of the Stephenson Masonic Lodge No. 135 in Darlington, Md., where he had served as master of the lodge. He was also a member of Consistory in Harrisburg, Pa. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Milford and was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

John is survived by his wife, Avis (Belloir) Huckins, whom he married in 1956. He is survived by two sons, Gordon Huckins and his wife, Deb, of Roseboom, and Donald Huckins of Mount Vision; and by two daughters, Laurel White and her husband, David, of Maryland, and Joan Lacy and her husband, Robert, of Warfordsburg, Pa.; four grandsons, Douglas White of Maryland, and Thomas, Matthew and Robbie Lacy of Warfordsburg, Pa. John is also survived by a brother, William Huckins of Wild Wood, Fla.; a half-brother, Douglas Huckins of Salinas, Calif.; and a half-sister, Louise Rotkowski of Dillsburg, Pa.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at the Milford United Methodist Church. Burial will follow the services in the Milford Cemetery.

John E. Raitt

DELHI — John E. Raitt, 91, a well-respected, longtime Delhi resident and former Delaware County historian, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Oct. 31, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

The son of Thomas A. and Mary A. (King) Raitt, he was born Dec. 3, 1912, in Southern Bovina, was a graduate of Hilton High School, Andes, and Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1935, then post-graduate at Hartwick College in 1938. He later married Helen C. Winter, April 11, 1941, in Delhi. She died Dec. 7, 1997.

In 1938, John became employed by the U.S. Post Office, Delhi, until entering the U.S. Army, where he served in the military postal services in the European theatre during WWII (1943-45), reaching the rank of staff sergeant. After which, he returned to Delhi, where he was eventually promoted to assistant postmaster, retiring in 1972.

Active in his church for more than 60 years, John served as trustee, deacon, presiding elder and, for more than 20 years, Clerk of Session of the First Presbyterian Church.

Civic-minded throughout his life, he was a life member of the Delhi Fire Dept., serving as its first chaplain and secretary of the Engine Co.; Donald W. Gleason Post. 190, American Legion; V.F.W.; more than 50 years in Delhi Masonic Lodge No. 439; the board of directors of Security Mutual Insurance Co.; Cannon Free Library; treasurer of the Delhi Chapter of the American Red Cross.; Hanford Mills Museum; past president of Delaware County Historical Assn.; Delhi village historian, and was appointed Delaware County historian (1981-95).

A gentleman of varied interests and talents, John was also an accomplished artist and, as a teenager, began sketching portraits of famous people in world politics, sports and the arts, which were autographed and returned, the most recent being President Bush’s wife, Laura.

Surviving are his three daughters, Jeanne (Jerome) Flye, of Walworth, Janice Raitt, of Delhi, and Christine (Keith) Campbell, of Washington, Pa.; a son, John "Jack" (Linda) Raitt, of Liverpool; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Isabel Schall and Mary Raitt.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where Masonic services will be held at 8:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, Clinton Street, by the Rev. Miriam Hathaway, with burial following in the Raitt family plot in Bovina Cemetery, where the D.W. Gleason Post will accord military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or Delaware County Historical Assn., Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

James Haggerty

LAURENS — Mr. James Kevin Haggerty, 57, passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born April 11, 1947, in Mount Vernon, the beloved son of Robert J. and Eileen (Smith) Haggerty.

He attended Roxbury Central School. He was a resident of West Laurens for 24 years. He loved working with animals, doing crafts and handiwork.

Survivors include his mother, Eileen Haggerty, and a sister, Mary-Lee Thorn, both of West Laurens; a sister, Sharon Rutulante of New Paltz; and a brother, Harry Bednar of Oneonta. He was beloved Uncle Jim to nieces and nephews, Nicole, Zachary and Kyle Thorn of West Laurens, Stephanie Baker, Renee, Philip, Danny and Nicholas Rutulante of New Paltz, Amber Horth of Sidney, and Robert, Melissa and Keith Haggerty of Otsego County.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert J. Haggerty Jr., in 1993; and his father, Robert J. Haggerty, in 1999.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A Mass will be held at the Holy Cross Church, Morris, at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, with Father Burns officiating.

There will be no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Haggerty’s memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, or the West Laurens Fire Department, West Laurens, NY 13796.

Donald G. Finch

FRANKLIN — Donald G. Finch, 59, of Franklin passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Walton on Nov. 7, 1944, the son of Ralph and Mary (Lambret) Finch.

He married Wendy Anderson on Feb. 21, 1992.

Donny owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Franklin for many years. After his retirement, he worked for several other area farmers.

Donny enjoyed the outdoors and especially loved hunting and fishing. Many of his friends will fondly remember playing basketball with him at his gym attached to his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy Finch; his two children, Christopher Wayne Anderson and Bryan Andrew Finch; a brother, Howard Finch of Walton; two sisters, Marjorie Schmitz of Wells Bridge and Patricia Miller of Redhook; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert Finch, and a sister, Irene Hotaling.

Friends are invited to call at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at which time the family will be in attendance. At 2:30 p.m. Thursday, a time of reflection will be offered for Donny’s friends who wish to share their memories.

Warren D. Herklotz

FRANKLIN — Warren D. Herklotz, 55, of Franklin passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Albany Medical Center.

He was born in Dover, N.J., on Nov. 8, 1948, the son of Herman A.D. and Arvilla (Reed) Herklotz.

He married Deborah J. Ketchum on June 15, 1974, in Johnson City.

Warren moved to Franklin with his family as a young boy. He graduated from the State University Agricultural Institute at Delhi and State University College at Oneonta.

He operated the family dairy farm in Franklin with his brother Butch for 25 years.

From 1989 to 1994, he served as a director on the board of Eastern Milk Producers Cooperative, and from 1993 to 1998, he served on the National Beef Promotion & Research Board and NYS Beef Industry Council.

Warren was also a beekeeper and maple syrup producer for the past 30 years. He most recently was in partnership with Bob Hazlett of Treadwell (H & H Apiaries), providing Delaware County with "A Taste of Nature’s Sweetness" through honey and maple syrup products.

He was past master of Franklin Lodge No. 562 F&AM and Ouleout Chapter No. 357 Order of the Eastern Star, serving as District Grand Lecturer in 1980-81. He was most recently a member of Walton Lodge F&AM. Warren was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Herklotz, of Franklin; his three sisters and their husbands, Joan and Harold Hall of Sharon Springs, Carol and Floyd Decker of Franklin, and Ruth and Jim Sickler of Franklin; one brother and his wife, Herman P. and Sheila Herklotz of Franklin; as well as two aunts and an uncle; 17 nieces and nephews; and 25 grandnieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Warren D. Herklotz will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in Franklin Community Bible Church, with the Rev. Walter Schlundt, pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad or the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.
