Gaylord W. Shaver

HARPERSFIELD — Gaylord W. Shaver, 88, of Harpersfield died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford.

Gaylord was born Nov. 7, 1915, on Shaver Road, in the town of Harpersfield, to Alvin and Alice Gaylord Shaver, in the same house he lived in until May 3, 2004, when he became a resident of Robinson Terrace.

Gaylord was a fifth-generation descendent of Col. John Harper, who founded and incorporated the town of Harpersfield on April 21, 1787. Gaylord was the last living descendent of Col. Harper who still lived in the town of Harpersfield.

During the Depression, he unselfishly gave up his dream of graduating high school and devoted his life to helping save the family farm. However, on July 1, 2004, he was presented an honorary diploma from the Stamford Central School, 71 years after he was to have graduated. This was a valued event in his life and he was so proud of his diploma and his mortarboard cap.

Gaylord is survived by two sisters, Ruth S. Brown of Frankfort and Shirley S. Kilgore of Utica. Also surviving are 11 nieces and nephews, Richard Gaylord Brown and wife Karen, Virginia (Edmunds) Brower and husband C. James, Carolyn (Edmunds) Lyons and husband Joseph, Donald Alvin Edmunds and wife Jennifer, Sheryl (Axel) Broelmann and husband Robert, Michael Axel and wife Catherine, Patricia (Axel) Nicholson, Jon Axel and wife Peggy, Kathryn Kilgore, Michael Kilgore and Darryl Kilgore; 23 great-nieces and -nephews; and nine great-great-nieces and -nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters and their spouses, Millicent (Shaver) Edmunds and Theodore and Esther (Shaver) Axel and Calvin; one brother-in-law, Roy C. Kilgore Jr.

Gaylord’s extended family included Dennis and Barbara Hill, Dwayne and Mary Lee Hill, David and Gloria Hill, Ariel Wilber, and Deidre and Damian Hill.

Gaylord was an avid and successful farmer all his life. In 1984, Gaylord sold the farm, which had been in the Shaver family since 1911, and is known today as the Shaver-Hill farm.

He was a member of the Dairyman’s League Coop. and the local Farm Bureau. He served as president of the Harpersfield Rural Cemetery Association. He was a member of the Harpersfield United Methodist Church and served on its Board of Trustees.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 40 Cornell Ave., Hobart, where the Rev. Norman Tiffany will officiate. Calling hours are noon until 2 p.m. Sunday before the service.

Interment will be in the Harpersfield Rural Cemetery.

In memory of Gaylord, donations may be made to the Harpersfield Rural Cemetery or the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are with the Friedel, Williams, Coriale & Edmunds Funeral Home, New Hartford.

Joanne Scala

HARTWICK — Mrs. Joanne Leo Morris Scala, 56, of School Street in Hartwick and formerly of Pioneer Street in Cooperstown, died Tuesday night, Nov. 2, 2004, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Joanne was born March 4, 1948, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Frederick J. and Ina Mae (Graham) Leo. She married Richard L. Scala on April 1, 1995, at the Tunnicliff Inn in Cooperstown.

A lifelong Cooperstown area resident, Joanne graduated from Cooperstown Central School with the Class of 1967. She then attended the Otsego Area School of Practical Nursing at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta and graduated as a licensed practical nurse in 1969.

She was then employed at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in the pediatric department until leaving in 1995. Since September of the same year, she has been employed as a teachers aide at the Cooperstown High School and has also served there as a substitute in the nurse’s office.

Joanne is survived by her husband, Richard, of Hartwick; her daughter, Katherine Morris of Hartwick; two sons, Jonathan Scala of Hartwick and Stephen Scala, who is currently serving with the U.S. Marines in the Middle East; her father, Frederick J. Leo of The Meadows; her brother, James Leo and his wife, Peggy, of Cooperstown; two nieces, Jennie and Kristin Leo; many cousins, including Frank Leo and his wife, Lee; her former husband, Kenneth Morris of Fly Creek; and many supportive friends.

She was predeceased by her mother, Ina Mae Leo, who died Feb. 20, 1996.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 7, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. when Joanne’s family will be in attendance.

Services will be private at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts, in memory of Joanne may be made to the Bob Simon Fund at the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, care of Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Rose Sager Casta

VERONA, Va. — Rose Sager Casta, 73, of 172 Riverview Drive, Verona, Va., died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

A daughter of the late Duncan Sager and Margaret Sager Ward, she was born Jan. 11, 1931, in Sidney. She resided in Sidney, later moving to Virginia, where she spent the last 25 years of her life.

In Sidney, she was employed by Bendix Corporation. In Virginia, she was employed by Peoples Life Insurance Company, serving Rockingham and Augusta Counties.

She was a member of The Ladies of Moose in Sidney and Verona United Methodist Church, Verona.

She is survived by three children, Valerie Smith and husband Richard of Orange, Va., Holly Pierce and husband Bill of Oneonta, and Kerry Miller and wife Deanna of Verona; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Hauschild and David Sager; and two sisters, Thelma Curtis and Erma Marble.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Miller, on April 30, 1967; and a sister, Margaret Cross of Florida.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., in Oneonta. Burial will follow in the Sidney Cemetery in Sidney.

Rose was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and now resides with God in Heaven. She will be missed immensely by her family and those close to her.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Sidney Moose Club, designated to support Moose Heart.

Gaylord W. Shaver

HARPERSFIELD — Gaylord W. Shaver, 88, of Harpersfield died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford.

Gaylord was born Nov. 7, 1915, on Shaver Road, in the town of Harpersfield, to Alvin and Alice Gaylord Shaver, in the same house he lived in until May 3, 2004, when he became a resident of Robinson Terrace.

Virginia J. Wheeler

SPRING HILL, Fla. — Virginia J. Wheeler of Spring Hill, Fla., and formerly of Grand Ledge, Mich., 81, died after a prolonged illness Oct. 27, 2004.

She was born Feb. 14, 1923, daughter of James D. and Cecile H. Johnson of Oneonta. She graduated from Delhi State College and worked as a dietitian at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, early in her career. She was employed by Consumers Power Company of Michigan and retired in 1983.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Francis, in 2003.

Mrs. Wheeler is survived by her sons, Scott (Sandy) and Craig (Cindy); seven grandchildren; brother, Donald (Eunice); and sister, Judy Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Spring Hill.

A private family memorial service will be held at Hartwick Seminary, near Cooperstown, at a later date.

Donations can be made in memory of Virginia to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

August Jacob

ONEONTA — August Jacob, 83, of Oneonta died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 1, 1921, in the Bronx, the son of Edward and Margareta (Franck) Jacob.

August served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.

He married Cleo Goettel on Jan. 4, 1941, in Yonkers.

August was a funeral director at the Park West Funeral Service Inc. in New York City for 40 years.

He was a member of the St. Eugene Roman Catholic Church, Yonkers; a member of the Lyons Club in Oneonta and Bridgeton, Maine. He was also a member of the Yonkers Pistol and Revolver Club, where he was a marksman.

August is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Cleo Jacob of Oneonta; his daughter, Carol Lawrence, and her husband, Martin, of Grand Gorge; his four grandchildren, William Lawrence, Cynthia Lawrence, Jeffery Lawrence and Martin Lawrence; his four great-grandchildren, James Lawrence, Alex Lawrence, Madeline Lawrence and Molly Lawrence; his nephew, Edward Fitzgerald; and his niece, Kathleen Angelloie.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mildred Fitzgerald.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at St. Eugene Roman Catholic Church, Yonkers. Burial will follow in the Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

C. Peter Fisk

WALTON— C. Peter Fisk, 62, of Walton passed away early Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, after a short illness.

Peter was born Oct. 27, 1942, in Liberty, the son of the late Joel M. and Irene Wood Fisk Sr. He was a graduate of Orange County Community College and the State University at Albany with an MBA. He was self-employed as a certified public accountant in Walton for many years.

Peter was a member of the New York state CPA Association and a former member of the Royale Oasis. He was an avid reader, gardener, camper, fisherman and Civil War enthusiast. He was also a strong supporter of the Republican Party.

He is survived by his significant other, Jane Miller of Oneonta; two daughters, Amelia Fisk Foote and her husband, Russell, of Downsville, Charlene Fisk and her partner, Margaret Farrell, of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Harrison Fisk and his partner, Erin Isbell, of Johnson City; his grandson, Dylan Fisk; the mother of his children, Joyce Fisk, Downsville; his special friends, Kim Miller and Gordon Soroka, Robert Miller and Tonya Fullington and Ty Miller; and several nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Joel Fisk.

Friends and family may pay their respects from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Joseph Upole, pastor of the Colchester Community Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Lew Beach Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Peter’s memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the Delaware County Humane Society. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.

Mildred Dales

KINGSTON — Mildred Dales, 96, of High Falls died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at her home in Golden Hill Health Care Center in Kingston.

She was born May 14, 1908, in Liberty, the daughter of Stanley and Nora Many Schoonmaker.

Mildred married Miles C. Dales of Hobart on Nov. 16, 1928. They lived on a farm in Stamford. He passed away in 1968.

She was a former member of the Stamford Presbyterian Church and the Community Church of High Falls. Mildred was a teacher in Grand Gorge and Roxbury and a member of the Marbletown Seniors.

She is survived by sons Miles Dales of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Donald Dales of Hobart; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Dales of Raymond, N.H., and Holly Raal of Woodstock; two great-grandchildren, Salim and Adris Raal; and her sister, Marion Zimmerman of Millville, N.J., (the last surviving of 11 siblings).

Her daughter, Hilda, predeceased her.

Burial will be private in the Harpersfield Cemetery on Peck Street.

A memorial gathering will be planned at a future date.

In place of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society or the National Arthritis Foundation.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Joe Hamilton Cannon

COOPERSTOWN — Dr. Joe Hamilton Cannon, pediatrician in chief at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown from 1967 until 1986, died peacefully in his sleep early Friday morning, Nov. 5, 2004. He was 82.

Burial services will be private and at the convenience of the family in Lakewood Cemtetery, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Nathaniel Megura

ONEONTA — Nathaniel J. Megura, 17, of Oneonta, passed away Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004.

He was born Oct. 11, 1987, in Oneonta, the son of Thomas A. Megura and Doris Falzone.

Nat was an 11th-grader at Oneonta High School. He enjoyed backpacking and cross-country trips. He was selected for the National Youth Leadership forum in the field of technology. The forum was 10 days in San Jose, Calif.

Nat played youth soccer and baseball through Pony League. He participated in Boy’s Choir for three years and was in the chorus of Tosca at the Glimmerglass Opera. He also was a member of Amnesty International.

He is survived by his parents; a sister, Anna; his grandparents, Dolores and Michael Falzone of California; Uncle Jim and Aunt Linda Megura of Brookfield, Conn., and cousins Matthew Magdits of Chicago, Ill., Aunt Debbie and Uncle Tom Egan and cousin Jacob of Arizona, Uncle Mike and Aunt Margaret Falzone and cousins Melinda, Mike and Morgan of Oregon, Uncle Steve and Aunt Cecelia and cousin Clair of California.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Robert Longobucco officiating.

Friends may call on Sunday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta from 2 to 5 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Lillian Cahill

ONEONTA — Lillian Cahill, 86, of Oneonta, passed away Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the M.I. Bassett Health Center in Cooperstown.

She was born May 30, 1918, in Fishs Eddy, the daughter of George and Mary (Goble) Eggler. She was married to John T. Cahill, who died several years ago.

As a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lillian’s spirit will live on forever in the hearts and minds of her family.

She is survived by her children, Clare and Richard Page of Oneonta, Carolyn Moore of Reseda, Calif., Pat Cahill of Granada Hills, Calif., Jack Cahill and Donna Avery of Oneonta, Dorothy Cahill of Oneonta, and Sharon Cahill of Oneonta; 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley Sparaco, and nine brothers and sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Edith C. Delello

ONEONTA — Beloved wife, mother, and sister, Edith Carrie Delello of Oneonta, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004.

She was born in Westford on Aug. 22, 1922, daughter of Elton D. and Grace N. (Bostwick) Sperry.

She married Martin J. Delello on May 5, 1946, in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Sidney.

She was a graduate of Laurens Central School, and a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. She was employed at Scintilla, Mead’s Meat Market for several years, Hartwick College and Elmore Feed.

Edith was known throughout the community as the perennial lady; many came to see her lovely gardens and trade plants, ask advice and to purchase beautiful flowers. She was often seen digging in her flowerbeds, watching the colorful songbirds gracing the backyard, or sitting on the front porch chatting with family, neighbors and friends. In addition to her love of flowers, she enjoyed being around animals. When they came to visit, she always had food and water bowls ready in anticipation of a long afternoon visit.

Edith’s strength and love live on through the memories of her daughter, Carla, and son-in-law James Norton, and daughter, Linda, and son-in-law Edward Stringer; granddaughter, Alysa G. Stringer and friend, Thomas Treadway; brothers and sisters, Russell and wife, Chris, Sperry, Neva Eccleston, Louise and brother-in-law Robert Peebles, Agnes Rous, brother, Donald Sperry, and youngest brother, Roger and his wife, Darla, Sperry; great-aunt, Dorothy Bostwick; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Martin; father and mother-in-law, Pasqule and Mitilda (Martin) Delello; brother, Ernest D. Sperry and his wife, Cathleen; sisters, Myrtle Sperry and Claudine Sabedra; brother-in-law, Leo Rous; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cecelia, Phyllis, Joan, Thelma Delello, Carole Maddalone, Bernice and her husband, Deforest, Mulkins, Leon Vandermark and Bernard Delello and his wife, Rose.

Friends may call at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, 2004. Family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, with the Rev. Kenneth Hunter, pastor of St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be at the Glenwood Cemetery, Main Street, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA, 4845 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements have been made with the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.
