Elizabeth Phillips

HOBART — Elizabeth Phillips, 71, of Hobart died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born July 22, 1933, in Kingston, the daughter of George and Catherine (Hutton) Kline.

She was married to Arthur Allcroft on Nov. 26, 1950. He predeceased her April 23, 1985. She married Robert Phillips on Oct. 4, 1986. He predeceased her Dec. 23, 2002.

Mrs. Phillips worked in management for AT&T for 35 years in New York City. She enjoyed membership in AT&T Pioneers Association and Sacred Heart Church where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, painting and traveling, but most of all she loved to spend time with her family.

She is survived by a son, Richard (Mary) Allcroft, Staten Island; two daughters, Teresa (Nicholas) Cubria, Staten Island, and Helen (Daniel) Danilczyki, Lynbrook, Long Island; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Staiti; three grandsons, Michael Cubria, James and Joseph Danilczyki; a great-granddaughter, Hayley Cubria; and her sister, Mary Erotos, Texas; and four nephews and three nieces.

A sister, Georgia Gardner, predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, in the Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Michael Cournoyer as celebrant.

Calling hours were from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at the funeral home, and will continue from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Nov. 8, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, NY 12167.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Edward Nabinger

DERBY, Conn. — Edward Leland Nabinger of Derby, Conn., and formerly of Bainbridge, died Friday evening, Nov. 5, 2004, after a long illness.

He was born the son of Jacob Warren and Grace (Stevens) Nabinger on Sept. 13, 1926.

He was a World War II Navy veteran.

On Nov. 7, 1953, he married his wife, Dolores, at the United Methodist Church in Unadilla.

He was employed on the sub assembly line at Raymond Corporation in Greene until he retired.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dolores; brother, Jack; and sons, Jack, Stanley and Alan.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Steven and Judy Nabinger of Bowie, Md., Chris and Denise Nabinger of Morgan, Calif., Vicki Paden of Oxford, and Melissa Flores of Derby, Conn.; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Catherine Menke of Chicago, Ill., Elsi Tennen of Mount Upton and Myrtle Reed of Clinton; and several nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 58 West Main St., Bainbridge.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the Dorothy Memorial Home in Bainbridge, with the Rev. Dolly Tarreto, pastor of the Afton and Bainbridge United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Plot 15-B next to his wife.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements were entrusted to Nick E. Ferrentelli & Arthur N. Jones and the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Katharine R. Smith

ONEONTA — Katharine Rich Smith, 89, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, Nov. 5, 2004. She died at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta, where she was a resident.

She was born Sept. 26, 1915, in Oshkosh, Wis., the daughter of Homer and Edith (Coxhead) Rich.

Katharine was a graduate of the Franklin High School.

On April 23, 1935, she married Clifford Smith in Meridale. He predeceased her in 1970.

Katharine ran a SUCO sorority house in Oneonta for many years and was affectionately called Mom and Muzzie Smith by her girls. She and her husband, Clifford, also owned and operated the Star Restaurant in Oneonta for seven years.

Katharine loved to knit clothes and dress up dolls for her family and also donated them to many charities.

She was a kind, loving and caring woman who was always ready to help her family and neighbors.

She is survived by her children, Barbara Mackey, Richard and his wife, Donna, Smith, Mary and her husband, John, Higgins, Grace and her husband, Steve, Simmons; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Harriet Law; several nieces and nephews; and a good friend, Theresa Millias and her family. Predeceased by two brothers, Barr and his wife, Dorothy Rich, and George and his wife, Doretta Rich; a son-in-law, Robert Mackey; and a bother-in-law, Walter Law.

Calling hours will be at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, from 10 a.m. to funeral service time at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004. Burial will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Meridale.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Katharine to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Effie Van Dyke

ROXBURY — Effie Anna Van Dyke, 73, died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her children, Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004.

She was born March 7, 1931, in Arena, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Bush) Brisbane.

Effie truly enjoyed her loving family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Van Dyke; her parents; two daughters, Joyce Ann Smith and Althea Joy Van Dyke; two brothers, Marshall Brisbane and Robert Brisbane.

She will be remembered by her son, Gerald Baker of Missouri; her daughter, Arlene Wood and husband, Raymond, of Sidney; her son, Joseph Baker and his wife, Barbara, of Sidney Center; her daughter, Alberta Van Dyke of Grand Gorge; her sons, Albert Van Dyke and Lisa of Laurens, and Allan Van Dyke of Roxbury; a stepdaughter, Diane Hoxie and her husband, Michael; her sisters, Dorothy Vanderlin of Shandaken, Gladys Fairbairn of Andes, Margaret Moshier of Andes, Marcia Spencer of Andes. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Donations may be made in Effie’s memory to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Donald A. Zimmerman

STAMFORD — Donald A. Zimmerman, 62, of Porn Road, Stamford, passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Donald was born Sept. 2, 1942, in Gilboa, the son of Edwin A. Zimmerman and Virginia Stevens.

Donald was a lifelong area resident. He worked as a mechanic, at Delhi Motors, Prospect Farms and at Eklund Farm Equipment in Stamford. Donald enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by one daughter, Kelly DeSormeau of Jefferson; two sons, Shawn Zimmerman of Stamford and Dennis Kirk of Concord, N.C.; his loving companion, Ellie Wayman of Stamford; one brother and sister-in-law, Edwin J. and Genevieve Zimmerman of Stamford; two sisters, Barbara Babcock of Honeoye and Betty and brother-in-law Paul, Slater of Barkhamsted, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home of Roxbury.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at the funeral home with the Rev. Elliott Oakes officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Grand Gorge.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home of Roxbury.

Amanda Bottke

COOPERSTOWN — Amanda Bottke, 97, passed away Friday night, Nov. 5, 2004, at The Meadows.

Born on Jan. 29, 1907, in Germany, Amanda immigrated to the United States on July 12, 1955. She resided in Cooperstown and was employed cleaning houses and cooking for many area families, including the Symington, Ross and Bordley households.

She was a devoted and faithful member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary.

Amanda is survived by her son, Edmund A. Bottke, and his wife, Marica, of Rio Vista, Texas; and several nieces and nephews in Germany.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Martha Schrull, who died on Nov. 20, 1981.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 8, 2004, in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Amanda’s church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4636 State Highway 28, Hartwick Seminary, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Barbara J. Walrath

HARTWICK SEMINARY — Mrs. Barbara Jean Walrath, 71, of Hartwick Seminary and Supply, N.C., passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, Nov. 4, 2004, at her winter home in Supply.

She was born on Dec. 18, 1932, a daughter of George and Edna Bird.

She married Earl E. Walrath on Aug. 30, 1949.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 55 years, Earl, of Hartwick Seminary and Supply, N.C.; her children, Edith of North Carolina, Earl of New York, Robert of Texas, Deborah of Louisiana, David of New York, Lori of North Carolina, and Michael of New York; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Betty Eldred, Nancy Hurry and Lois Deuel.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas S. Burleigh, Bassett Healthcare chaplain, officiating. Burial will follow in Hartwick Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until service time.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Arline Lyon

HOBART — Arline Lyon, 87, formerly of Hobart, who passed away Oct. 29, 2004, will be remembered as a licensed practical nurse who did private nursing in the area.

She was born in Torrington, Conn., on Oct. 4, 1917, the daughter of Louis and Jeanie (Bierce) Morroway.

She is survived by two nieces, Corrine Remeika and Caroline Heatherton.

Memorial services will take be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, with Fr. John Burns officiating at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will be Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, in Forest View Cemetery, Winsted, Conn.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Pauline Hollenbeck

SCHENEVUS — Pauline M. Hollenbeck, 69, of Schenevus died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born March 11, 1935, in Oneonta, the daughter of Elbert and Flossie (Robinson) Rowlison.

Pauline married William Hollenbeck on Nov. 1, 1950, in Worcester.

Pauline was a nurse’s aide and worked at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi and also A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for many years.

She enjoyed doing crafts and gardening, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Pauline was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who will be deeply missed.

Pauline is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, William Hollenbeck of Schenevus; three children, Linda Wood and her husband, Donald, of Schenevus, Billy Hollenbeck of Schenevus, and Debbie MacClintock of Schenevus; five grandchildren, Donald S. Wood of North Carolina, Brian A. Wood of Virginia, Steven G. MacClintock of East Meredith, Joseph J. MacClintock of Texas, and Crystal L. MacClintock of Schenevus; five great-grandchildren, Megan Wood, Cole Wood, Leah Wood, Effia MacClintock and J’Ana MacClintock; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Mikayla Gilgo; one sister, Helen Judd and her husband, Robert, of Hannibal; her special dog, Cuddles; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by one son, Gordan Hollenbeck; five brothers; and one sister.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating. Burial will follow in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Paul R. Titch

ANDES — Paul R. Titch, 77, formerly of Andes, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born March 29, 1927, in Shavertown, the son of John and Dora (Francisco) Titch.

He married Faith Wright in Roscoe. She predeceased him in October 1973. He later married Betty Lakin. She predeceased him in February 2002.

A veteran of World War II. Paul was a lifetime member of the Tremperskill Rod and Gun Club. He was also a former member of the NRA. Paul was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed both hunting and fishing.

He was employed by the Andes Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. He retired after 45 years there.

He was very close with his children and grandchildren and loved them dearly.

He is survived by three sons, Robert and Judith Titch of Andes, Barry and Becky Titch of DeLancey, and William and Dornora Misner of East Meredith; a stepson, George and Joan Barnes of Sidney Center; 10 grandchildren, Aaron, Larry and Steven Titch of Andes, Faith, Christopher, Joseph and Rosa Titch of DeLancey, and Kimberly, Kayla and William Misner of East Meredith; an uncle, Harry Francisco of Lima, Pa.; and a close cousin, Raymond Finkle of Roscoe.

He was predeceased by a son, Paul Larry Titch, in 1955.

Friends are invited to greet the family from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Gerald Norris officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Andes-Shavertown Cemetery, Andes.

Contributions in Paul’s memory are asked to be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care or the National Alzheimer’s Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

ONEONTA — Katharine Rich Smith, 89, of Oneonta, who passed away Nov. 5, 2004, was also predeceased by two brothers, Barr and his wife, Dorothy Rich, and George and his wife, Doretta Rich; a son-in-law, Robert Mackey; and a brother-in-law, Walter Law.

Wayne M. Swantak

HOLLISTON, Mass. — Wayne Michael Swantak, 62, of Holliston died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 8, 2004.

Born in Stamford, he is the son of Lila May (Haynes) Swantak of South Kortright and the late Michael C. Swantak. He is also the husband of 21 years to Audrey M. (Vail) Swantak of Holliston.

Wayne was an Army veteran who enlisted in 1966 for the Vietnam War and then was transferred to the Army Natick Lab in 1968, as an Army food specialist. He remained there for 36 years. He was also a graduate of the University of Georgia.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Andrea J. Scarbrough of Foxboro and Pamela A. Daley and her husband, Paul, of Plainville; two brothers, Richard J. Swantak of South Kortright and Charles E. Swantak and his wife, Karol, of Binghamton; two sisters, Maryanne Callan and her husband, Lance, of Stamford and Joan Damiano of Conklin; three grandchildren, McKenzie, Colby and Matthew; nine stepgrandchildren, Tammy, Trina, Ashley, Brennan, Jessica, Courtney, Riley, Kevin and Haley; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Sean, Ryan, Adam and Emma; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the Chesmore Funeral Home, 854 Washington St. (Route 126), Holliston.

His funeral will take place at St. Andrews Church, 3 Maple St., Framingham, at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2004. Burial will follow in Lake Grove Cemetery of Holliston.

Donations towards a trauma program may be made in his name to Norman Stein, 660 Harrison Ave., Third Floor, Boston, MA 02118.

Frederick J. Leo

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Frederick J. Leo, 90, longtime resident of Cooperstown, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 9, 2004, at The Meadows. He is now at peace in the loving arms of his wife, Ina, dancing in Heaven.

Fred was born Jan. 3, 1914, in Manhattan, a son of Frank and Anna (Oddo) Leo.

He married Ina Mae Graham on Oct. 24, 1943, in the Rectory of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Mrs. Leo died Feb. 20, 1996.

Raised in New York City, Fred and his family moved to Cooperstown when he was 15 years old, and he later graduated from Cooperstown High School.

From the late 1930s until the early 1950s, he was the owner and operator of Cooperstown Dry Cleaners on Main Street. After selling this business, he assisted his mother with the operation of Leo’s Grocery before becoming employed as a salesman with Collins Furniture Store. From the late 1960s until his retirement he was employed in the sales department at Bruce Hall Corp. in Cooperstown, and was then maintenance supervisor at W.L. Taylor & Son.

A 42-year veteran of the Cooperstown Fire Department Engine Co. No. 2, Fred was an active member and served over the years as a company foreman and later captain of the fire police. He truly enjoyed the camaraderie he shared with his fellow Cooperstown firefighters.

He was also a member of the Native Sons of Cooperstown and possessed a love of all animals, most especially Labradors. A devotee of big band music, he amassed a sizeable record collection and enjoyed dancing at various functions throughout the area with his wife and their friends.

Fred is survived by his son, James Leo and his wife, Peggy, of Cooperstown; his grandchildren, Jennifer and Kristen Leo, Katherine Morris, and Jonathan and Stephen Scala; his son-in-law, Richard Scala of Hartwick; a brother-in-law, Alan Graham, and his wife, Dorothy, of Newburgh; a former son-in-law, Kenneth Morris; a former daughter-in-law, Barbara Leo; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one daughter, Mrs. Joanne Scala, who died Nov. 2, 2004, and his brother, Joseph Leo and his wife, Carmelita.

A firefighter funeral service will be conducted by members of the Cooperstown Fire Department at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Nov. 14, 2004, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown. Immediately following the firefighters’ service at the funeral home, the Cooperstown Fire Department’s 1952 Mack will bear Fred to St. Mary’s Cemetery in Index, for the Rite of Committal and burial, to be officiated by Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers, Fred’s family would appreciate expressions of sympathy in the form of donations in his memory to the Cooperstown Fire Department, PO Box 1, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or in memory of Fred and Ina Mae Leo and Joanne Scala to the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
