Arlow J. Miller

WALTON — Arlow J. Miller, 54, of Walton passed away at home, surrounded by her family, Monday morning, Nov. 9, 2004, after a short illness.

She was born in Baxley, Ga., on July 31, 1950, the daughter of Joseph and Arlow Collins Eagleson.

She married Joseph B. Miller on Sept. 30, 1975, in Cliffside Park, N.J. She and Joe moved to Walton shortly after marrying.

Arlow was employed at Walton High School as a librarian. She loved to hunt, fish and tend to her garden at home.

Arlow is survived by her husband, Joe; her parents, Joseph and Arlow Eagleson of St. Augustine, Fla.; one daughter, Rebecca S. Miller of Patterson, La.; two sons, Jason and Kyle, both of Walton; a granddaughter, Brianna Miller; and a brother, Michael Eagleson of St. Augustine, Fla.

Friends and family are invited to call at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, where services will be held Friday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Peggy Fabrizio officiating.

Memorial contributions in Arlow’s memory may be made to the Walton Central School Library. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.

Marjorie W. Maas

BURLINGTON, Mass. — Marjorie Whittaker Maas, nee Rushton, formerly of Stamford, passed away Nov. 5, 2004, at the Lahey Clinic, Burlington, after a short illness.

She was born July 27, 1916, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

She was trained as a registered nurse at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in central London. She was commissioned a captain in P.M.R.A.F.N.S. at the start of World War II. She saw service in central London during the entirety of the "Blitz," on the North Atlantic run during and after the war on hospital ships, and at RAF base hospitals in Bahrain, the Persian Gulf and Baghdad, Iraq.

After leaving the service she was married to John J. Maas of New York, who predeceased her by 10 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane, of Winchester, Mass.; a son, John, of Oneonta; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Donations may be sent to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

A memorial service is being planned.

June S. Sandin

LARGO, Fla. — June S. Sandin of Largo and formerly of Bloomville passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004.

She is the mother of Christine (Jack) Benkert, K. Scot (Lisa) Sandin, Linda (Randy) Shorts, Jeffry (Shana) Sandin, and Laura (Kent) Miller; and is the grandmother of 13 grandchildren.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, from the Arcade United Methodist Church, Main Street, Arcade.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in June’s memory may be made to the College Foundation at Delhi, care of SUNY Delhi, 2 Main St., Delhi, NY 13753.

Robert W. Watson

MORRIS — Mr. Robert W. Watson, 89, passed away Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born May 8, 1915, in Scranton, Pa., the son of George and Eva (Rought) Watson.

On Nov. 22, 1939, he married the former Dorothy Carlton in Clark Summit, Pa.

He was a graduate of Nicholson High School, Nicholson, Pa. He attended Delhi Agricultural Institute where he studied animal husbandry. He worked as an engineer at General Electric in Vestal.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing and being with friends and family.

The Village Coffee Shop in Morris was his "second home." For many years his closest companion was his wonderful cat, "Bear." He loved animals, and they loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Watson; his children, Diana Heeman and her husband, Almon, of Morris, Esther Busch and her husband, Russell, of Fox Lake, Ill., Gregory Watson and his wife, Sue, of Spicewood, Texas; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Clayton Carlton Heeman.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no public funeral or calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Morris Emergency Squad.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Arnold R. Beebe

SIDNEY — Arnold R. Beebe, 78, of Sidney passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at his home.

He was born July 9, 1926, son of the late Milo and Mattie (Tuttle) Beebe in Greene.

Arnold attended Unadilla Central School, graduating in 1944. He married Helen Simonds on May 15, 1948, in Wells Bridge.

Before entering the service, he and his brother, Reg, owned and operated a grocery store in Wells Bridge. Mr. Beebe served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1951-1953. After an honorable discharge, he returned to the area and began working at Scintilla in Sidney. Mr. Beebe was employed there for 35 years as an electronics technician. He retired in 1988.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Beebe, Sidney; daughter, Lin Wischhusen, Salem, Ore.; son, Tim Beebe, Tucson, Ariz.; brother and sister-in-law, Reginald and Ann Beebe, Bradenton, Fla.; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no visitation. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Mary P. Mahler

DAVENPORT — Mary P. Mahler, 77, passed away Nov. 8, 2004, peacefully at home.

She was born April 14, 1927, in Bay Shore, the daughter of Patrick Henry and Grace (Finn) O’Sullivan.

Mary is survived by her husband of 56 years, Herman H. Mahler; three sons, Michael, Patrick and Gerard; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Mary to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Louise N. Martin

SCHENECTADY — Louise Nellie Bloodgood Martin was born Aug. 3, 1923, in the village of Lexington. Her parents were Eugene Bloodgood and Lydia Sharpe Bloodgood.

She died suddenly Nov. 9, 2004, in Schenectady, where she had lived for the past two years.

Most of her life was spent living in Prattsville. She was married to Carlton Martin on Nov. 15, 1941. Carlton died April 18, 2003. They were married for 62 years.

She is survived by her children, Dennis and his wife, Ruth (Windham), David and his wife, Debbie (Prattsville), Sandra and her husband, Donald Meade (Middleburgh), Sharon and her husband, Frank Clark (Delanson), and Diane and her husband, Timothy Widenor (Schenectady). She was the grandmother of Scott Meade and his wife, Kate (Niskayuna), Sonya Meade and her husband, Jaime Kikpole (Albany), and Chelsea Martin (Prattsville). She was the stepgrandmother of Kerry Thorington and Erica Perry. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Emily, Hannah, Jordan and Colin Meade of Niskayuna. Also surviving are her brothers, Kenneth (Westkill), Russell (California), and Donald (Oregon).

She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Stanley, Joseph and Edward.

Louise was a devoted wife, homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her greatest accomplishments were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was known for her wonderful cooking and her many talents, including crocheting and baking.

Services will be held at noon Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at the Decker Funeral Home, Windham. Officiating will be the Rev. Victoria Onderdonk-Milne. Interment will follow at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville.

Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made in Louise’s memory to the Prattsville Rescue Squad.

Wayne M. Swantak

HOLLISTON, Mass. — Memorial services for Wayne Michael Swantak, 62, who passed away Nov. 8, 2004, will be held at the Sacred Heart Church of Stamford at a later date to be announced.

Paul R. Titch

ANDES — Paul R. Titch, 77, formerly of Andes, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born March 29, 1927, in Shavertown, the son of John and Dora (Francisco) Titch.

He married Faith Wright in Roscoe. She predeceased him in October 1973. He later married Betty Lakin. She predeceased him in February 2002.

A veteran of World War II, Paul was a lifetime member of the Tremperskill Rod and Gun Club. He was also a former member of the NRA. Paul was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed both hunting and fishing.

He was employed by the Andes Highway Department as a heavy-equipment operator. He retired after 45 years there.

He was very close to his children and grandchildren and loved them dearly.

He is survived by two sons, Robert and Judith Titch of Andes, and Barry and Becky Titch of DeLancey; one daughter, Dornora and William Misner of East Meredith; a stepson, George and Joan Barnes of Sidney Center; 10 grandchildren, Aaron, Larry and Steven Titch of Andes; Faith, Christopher, Joseph and Rosa Titch of DeLancey, and Kimberly, Kayla and William Misner of East Meredith; an uncle, Harry Francisco of Lima, Pa.; and a close cousin, Raymond Finkle of Roscoe.

He was predeceased by a son, Paul Larry Titch, in 1955.

Friends greeted family members from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Gerald Norris officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Andes-Shavertown Cemetery, Andes.

Contributions in Paul’s memory are asked to be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., or the National Alzheimer’s Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Henry Metzger

STAMFORD — Henry Metzger, 102, of Delhi passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, after a long stay with friends at Robinson Terrace.

He was a resident of Delhi from 1982. Mr. Metzger was born in Newark, N.J., on Jan. 1, 1902. He was the youngest son of Philip and Margaret (Young) Metzger.

He married Frieda Kruse of Brooklyn in 1936. They had 50 years together before her passing in 1986.

He was fascinated with radio and electricity. He was a charter member of the Radio Club of America (RCA) which had its origins in Irvington, N.J.

He began his career in 1917 at the age of 15 as an apprentice to a journeyman electrician. In time he too was a journeyman electrician.

When World War I started, he was too young to join along with his three brothers. When World War II started, they told him he was "too old" to join up. He joined the Brooklyn Navy Yard and became a civilian captain before the war was over. He could always be counted on to tell stories about his past employment.

His parents; three brothers, John, Bill and Fred; two sisters, Margaret and Lillian; and three sisters that never reached the age of 5 predeceased him.

He is survived by his daughter, Edith and her husband, Chris Thomsen; and two grandsons and their wives, Eric and Tish Voorhees and Bruce and Stephanie Voorhees. He leaves six great-grandchildren that loved him, Kelly, Rachel, Meghan, Bryan, Christopher and Jessica. He leaves many nieces and nephews in New York and New Jersey.

He appreciated all the care he received at O’Connor Hospital in January and from his family at Robinson Terrace and the folks of Hospice who were there for him.

Calling hours are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2004.

A small service of remembrance will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at the funeral home in Hobart, with Deacon Glen Schermerhorn officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Linda J. Mowers

ONEONTA — Linda J. Mowers, 63, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

She was born Feb. 10, 1941, in Oneonta, the daughter of Arthur and Velma (Eggler) Shaw.

Linda married Kenneth J. Mowers Sr. She and her husband, Ken, owned and operated Tiny’s Inn in Maryland, Ken’s Taxi Service in Oneonta and L&K Used Car Enterprise. Linda had been employed at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center as a nurse’s aide.

Linda had a great passion for going to garage sales and auctions, collecting a variety of treasured items and helping out in her son Ken’s antique shop, Arrow Head Used Furniture & Collectibles.

She was a person who was always willing to help anyone in need, going above and beyond. She had a very generous heart and never turned away anyone, friend or stranger. She will be dearly missed by many.

She is survived by two sons, Anthony and his wife, Angela Mowers, of Otego and Kenneth Mowers Jr. of Oneonta and his significant other, Phyllis Pepper, of Syracuse; grandchildren, Brett, Alex and Ann Marie Mowers of Otego; a brother, Arthur and his wife, Alana Shaw; and a sister, Janet Gano, all of Davenport Center; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also, special friends, Madeline Jackson, Lee Montgomery and Muriel Ross; along with many other friends.

Linda was predeceased by her husband, Ken, in 1993; a granddaughter, Sheri Mowers in 2001; and her parents.

Calling hours will be held at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 10 a.m. to the memorial service time at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Linda to the Alcohol & Drug Council, Anti-Smoking Program, 72 Main St., Delhi, NY 13753 or to the Mental Health Association, 5546 Route 7, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Lee R. Ashton

LAKE WALES, Fla. — Mr. Lee R. Ashton, 79, of Lake Wales, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Lake Wales Medical Center, Lake Wales.

Mr. Ashton was born Dec. 24, 1924, in Ilion. Mr. Lee moved to Lake Wales in 1988 from Laurens. When he retired, he was a telephone installer/repairman for the New York Telephone Company.

Survivors include his wife, Meryl Ashton (nee: Bowen), of Lake Wales, Fla.; two sons, Scott Ashton of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Frank Ashton of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three daughters, Marilyn Holmes of Lake Wales, Fla., Jacqueline Semit of Herkimer and Beth Hunt of Winter Haven, Fla.; one brother, Jack Ashton of Dayton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home, 2198 K-Ville Ave., Auburndale, FL 33823.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Marine Division Association Memorial/Scholarship Fund, 410 Pier View Way, Oceanside, CA 92054.

Grace A. Shultis

ONEONTA — Grace A. Shultis, 72, of Oneonta passed away on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 4, 1932, in Oneonta, the daughter of Thomas and Palma (Di Giovanni) Alley.

She married Glenn E. Shultis on April 13, 1952, in Oneonta.

Grace retired in 1996 as an administrative assistant at SUNY Oneonta, where she worked for 31 years.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and during her working career she was a member of the CSEA.

Grace’s hobbies were shopping, walking, exercising at FoxCare, traveling with the Eastern Travel group and visiting her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Glenn E. Shultis of Oneonta; her children and their spouses, Deb and William Buckley of Pulaski, Glenn A. and Julie Shultis of San Diego, Calif., and Jim and Jennifer Shultis of Marshfield, Mass.; and five grandchildren, Tim and Michael Buckley, Eva Shultis, and Casey and Ryan Shultis. She was very fond of her many nieces and nephews that also survive.

She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Robert Alley, Tony Alley and Margaret Ploutz.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, in St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
