Marjorie F. Klindt

DOWNSVILLE — Funeral services for Marjorie F. Klindt, 95, of Downsville, who passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, will be held at the Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16. The Rev. Joseph Upole of the Colchester Community Church will officiate.

Interment will be in Paige Cemetery, Downsville.

Marjorie was born in Maryland on Jan. 28, 1909, on the family farm at Crumhorn, the daughter of Harold and Julia (Bates) Marble.

She was a resident of Downsville for the past 74 years, having moved there in 1930.

Marjorie was married to Thorvald J. Klindt on Oct. 10, 1926, in Laurens.

She was a housewife, served on the local board of elections many years, was active in local card clubs, both bridge and pinochle, and was a devout Atlanta Braves fan. A member of the Colchester Community Church and past member of the Downsville Republican Club, she was a very giving person, well-liked and loved by all who knew her.

Marjorie is survived by four sons, Herbert B. of Downsville, Roger M. of Tillson, Gary and wife Judy of Sidney Center, Alan W. and wife Natalie of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Barbara J. and husband George Firment of Andes; one brother, Gordon Marble and wife Ella of Surprise, Ariz., 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Genevra Miller and Dorothy Richards.

Friends may call Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions to the Colchester Community Church may be made in her memory.

Allen J. LaSalle

STAMFORD — Allen J. LaSalle, 70, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, after a brief illness.

He was a building contractor in the Stamford area for more than 30 years.

Allen was married to the late Irene Persons La Salle.

He is survived by two daughters, Nanette E. LaSalle of Topanga, Calif., and Theresa I. LaSalle of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, Paul of Schenectady, Errol of Cherry Valley and Carl of Gaston, S.C.; three sisters, Victoria Lopez of Buffalo, Blanche Upchurch of Vienna, Ohio, and Dolores Sharp of Omaha, Neb.

Allen served honorably with the United States Army during the Korean War. He was an active member of the Stamford Rod and Gun Club, the Stamford Pistol Team and the Oneonta Skeet and Trap Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Allen’s memory to the Forest View Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 36153, Richmond, VA 23235, and/or the American Cancer Society.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Harriet M. Becker

COOPERSTOWN — Harriet M. Becker, 82, a lifelong resident of Otsego County, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at The Meadows.

Harriet was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Herbert "Bert" Morgan and Bertha (Layton) Morgan.

She graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1941 and thereafter from Albany Business College. After graduation she worked as a secretary for a public advocacy group in Albany until 1946, when she returned to Cooperstown. During 1946 and 1947, she worked in the Otsego County Clerk’s office. She later worked for many years at Bresee’s in Oneonta, retiring in 1981. She was a tireless volunteer, having volunteered as a secretary at the First United Presbyterian Church in Oneonta and as a volunteer for such organizations as the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Bassett Healthcare, the SPCA Thrift Shop, Literacy Volunteers and 4-H. She was a member of the Bassett Hospital Auxiliary and the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown. Harriet was an avid reader, in particular she loved reading autobiographies and biographies.

Harriet married Clyde Becker Jr., on May 31, 1947, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown. After their marriage, they resided in Cooperstown and then Cherry Valley for several years. Thereafter they lived in Oneonta for more than 20 years before returning to Cooperstown in 1981.

Surviving are her husband, Clyde Becker of Brunlar Court, Cooperstown; her daughter, Gail Monington and son-in-law Joseph Monington of Cooperstown; her daughter, Laura Greene and son-in-law Thomas Greene of West Oneonta; her daughter Sue B. Reidhead and son-in-law Paris Reidhead of Hartwick; and her son, John F. Becker of Latham. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews as well as by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John W. and Ruth Becker of Pittsburgh, Pa.

She was predeceased by her sister, Anita Coleman, and her two brothers, Stanley and Harold Morgan.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Pioneer Street, Cooperstown.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 with Pastor Ronald Fralick of the First Presbyterian Church of Cherry Valley officiating.

Following the funeral, burial will be in the Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who so wish, make donations in Harriet’s memory to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the "Activities Fund" c/o The Meadows, County Route 33, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Annabelle C. ’Chris’ Sinstack

ONEONTA — Annabelle C. "Chris" Sinstack, 80, of Oneonta, passed away with her family at her side, on Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at her home of complications from Lou Gerhig’s Disease.

She was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Stickney, S.D., the daughter of Rasmussen and Sophia Christensen.

She married Harry F. Sinstack on Sept. 25, 1945, in Deposit.

Chris retired in 1982 from the State University College at Oneonta, where she was a switchboard operator for a number of years. Prior to that, she worked at the Pentagon from 1943 to 1945 and for Scintilla in Sidney for three years.

She was a member of the Oneonta Business Women’s Network, the Oneonta American Legion Auxiliary Unit 259 and the Monday Night Women’s Bowling League.

She is survived by her husband, Harry F. Sinstack of Oneonta; two children, David and Grace Sinstack of West Oneonta and Bonnie Robinson of Oneonta; four grandchildren, James Sinstack, Rick Robinson, Jeffrey Sinstack, and Eric Sinstack; a brother, Norman Christensen of North Sanford; two sisters-in-law, Lois Judd of Oneonta and Marilyn Sinstack of Oneonta, as well as several nieces, nephews and two special friends, Miriam and Ginna.

She was predeceased by a brother and a sister, Bert Christensen and Frances Woodford.

A service to celebrate the life of Chris Sinstack will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta with Allison Bookhout, Catskill Area Hospice spiritual coordinator, officiating.

Friends may call one hour before the service on Monday. The family will be in attendance.

The Sinstack family is so appreciative of the kindness and care given to Chris; they are requesting that memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home. Oneonta.

Edith Konchar

MILFORD — Edith "Eileen" Konchar, 89, of Route 28, Milford, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born July 10, 1915, in Birmingham, England, the daughter of Harry and Elsie (Hancock) Fisher. As a young girl she moved with her family to Canada, where she attended grade school. Later she and her family moved to the Iselin, N.J., area.

Following her graduation from high school, Eileen became a naturalized citizen and, during World War II, worked at the federal shipyards in Kearney, N.J. After the war, Eileen and her family moved to the Cooperstown area where she, her mother and father found work with the Ryerson family in the Springfield area.

She married William Konchar on July 3, 1948, and thereafter, they moved to Milford where together they operated their farm on county Route 44 until 1978.

Eileen was a deeply religious person and took great pleasure in reading and rereading the Bible. She was a longtime member of the Milford Center Community Bible Church.

She is survived by her beloved husband, William H. Konchar; her son, Donald Blair, and his wife, Sandra, of Highland Mills, and their three children, Robert and James Blair of Highland Mills, and Scott Blair of Monroe. She is also survived by three great-granddaughters.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home on Pioneer Street, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen Fournier, pastor of the Milford Center Community Bible Church, officiating. The family will be present from 1 p.m. until the time of the service to receive friends.

Burial will follow the service in the Fly Creek Cemetery, Fly Creek.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those who so desire make memorial contributions to the Milford Emergency Squad, North Main Street, Milford, NY 13807 in Eileen’s memory.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

May E. Pendergast

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — May E. Pendergast, 93, formerly of East Lake Street, and widow of Joseph Pendergast, died in Valley Health Services.

She was born on June 25, 1911, in Brooklyn, a daughter of the late Charles and Josephine (Miller) Erkman.

She was educated in Queens, graduating from Jamaica High School. May continued her education graduating from Pratt Institute as a court stenographer.

On Aug. 28, 1953, she married Joseph M. Pendergast in Massapequa, Long Island.

For 19 years she worked with the New York City Housing Authority as a supervisor of the Legal Department of Stenographers, retiring in 1959.

Coming from New Jersey, May and her husband made their home in Richfield Springs in the early 1970s. During this time they also owned and operated the Royal Pine Lodge and Cottages in Burnham, Maine, until 1983.

She was a member of the Richfield Springs Seniors. May was a caring and giving person. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and making clothes for her nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Surviving her are two nieces, Arlene Stutzmann of Pittsburgh and Barbara Mack of Vero Beach, Fla.; several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Vincent Erkman; and two sisters, Dorothy Stutzmann and Anna Denike.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor, officiating.

The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to receive relatives and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Allen J. LaSalle

STAMFORD — Allen J. LaSalle, 70, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, after a brief illness.

Svein E. Nissen

BOVINA — Svein E. Nissen, 54, died unexpectedly, Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at his home.

The son of Hans and Mabel (Salversen) Nissen, he was born March 18, 1950, in Austad, Norway, coming to New York in 1971.

A resident of Staten Island for 28 years, he was a carpenter and builder of custom homes before retiring to Bovina in 2000.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and entertaining. He would go out of his way to help anyone, doing more for others than himself.

Surviving are his wife of 32 years, the former Alyce Kuester; a son, Keith, of Staten Island; and daughter, Steisy, of Berkeley, Calif.; his mother; three brothers, Kjell, Odd and Asbjorn; and three sisters, Elly Aanensen, Mariann Daaland and Heidi Jansen, all in Norway.

The family will receive friends from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Services are private and burial will be in Rosedale Memorial Park, Linden, N.J.

Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, with Pastor Ronald Fralick of the First Presbyterian Church of Cherry Valley officiating.

Ruby M. Jenkins

PHOENIX MILLS — Mrs. Ruby M. Jenkins of Phoenix Mills, wife of Arthur Jenkins Jr., passed away peacefully with her family at her side Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. She was 81.

Ruby was born June 16, 1923, in the family homestead, "Elmhurst," located alongside the Susquehanna River on Phoenix Road in Phoenix Mills. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Grace (Cook) Robinson.

She married Arthur Jenkins Jr. on Feb. 6, 1943, in the parsonage of the Cooperstown Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Fred’rick W. Connell officiating.

Raised in Phoenix Mills, she graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1940. She was first employed as a waitress at the former Sherry’s Restaurant on the corner of Main and Chestnut streets in Cooperstown. She was also employed during World War II at the Mica Plant, a defense factory in Oneonta.

In 1944, Ruby and Art moved to Iowa, where they lived for the next seven years and where she was employed as a division head in a garment factory. They then moved to Indianapolis, Ind., and moved one year later in 1951, back to Phoenix Mills, settling in her childhood home, "Elmhurst."

For the next 30 years she was employed, along with her husband, as a bookkeeper for Robinson’s Texaco Station, and for a time she had worked at J.J. Newberry Co., both in Cooperstown.

Ruby was a member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church and the Otsego-Hartwick-Arbutus Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star in Cooperstown.

She was also recognized and valued as an authority on the history of Phoenix Mills.

For many years she served as a caregiver for many family members, including her mother, brother and husband.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Art, of The Meadows in Phoenix Mills; one daughter, Sue Ann Jenkins of Phoenix Mills; two sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Johnson and her husband, Wayne, of Cooperstown, and Mrs. Laurel Wimpish of Corpus Christi, Texas; several nieces and nephews; her loving neighbors, Ron and Edie Jennings and Valerie Buckley; and her extraordinary extended family at The Meadows.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Jay, Milton, Roy, Ray, Budd, Jesse and Torrey Robinson, and one sister, Florence Mills.

A graveside service will be held in the spring in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Richard F. Schenk

WALTON — Richard F. Schenk, 87, of Walton passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, in the Delaware Valley Hospital after a short illness.

Dick was born Sept. 30, 1917, in Newark, N.J., the son of the late Frederick and Emma Hoffman Schenk.

He was a graduate of Newark College of Engineering, Class of 1939. He was employed at Johnson & Johnson as an engineer, retiring in 1973.

On Sept. 6, 1941, he married Edith May Gerndt. She died Aug. 15, 1986.

When Dick retired, he and Edith bought a farm and moved to Walton, where they raised beef cattle.

Dick also loved to do carpentry and built an addition on his house and rebuilt his barn. He also loved to work on his three tractors.

Dick enjoyed genealogy, tracing the Schenk family back to Germany and the 17th century.

Dick is survived by two daughters, Linda and her husband, Paul, Crosby, of Newton, N.J., and Ann Schenk of Lansing; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Enowitch, Jacqueline Crosby, Kathleen Seward, Paul and Richard Crosby, Michelle and Cheryl Schenk; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alva Guren of Elizaville and Jane Wright of Alabama; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Edith; a son, Eric Schenk; and two sisters, Doris Waldrip and Bernice Lippe.

Friends and family are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Suzanne Cole officiating. Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Dick’s memory may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice or The Franziska Racker Center. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.
