Jean D. London

CONCORD, N.H. — Jean D. London, 82, died on Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, in Concord, N.H.

She was born Jan. 2, 1922, in Buffalo but spent her childhood in New London.

Her formal education included degrees earned with distinction at Colby Junior College, Syracuse University and Columbia University. Later she earned a second master’s degree (in library science) at Simmons College, Boston.

She taught sociology at Colby Junior College and then became a reference librarian at Wheaton College and finally at the State University College at Oneonta.

After retirement, Jean became absorbed in volunteer activities, first in Oneonta with the soup kitchen Saturday’s Bread. She was a founding member of the trio that began the "Friends of Christmas," serving free dinners Dec. 25, starting with 35 guests but over the next decade swelling to nearly 400.

She volunteered her professional skills to help the tiny library in the village of Milford and served with Elderhostelers at the Paul Newman Camp for children with life-threatening illnesses. She was a much-loved and valued member of the Butternuts Friends Monthly Meeting (Quakers).

With her friend of more than 50 years, Peg Cawley, Jean enjoyed traveling and experiencing other cultures in the British Isles, Europe and Scandinavia, later helping with Peg’s slide shows to share these experiences.

In the 1950s, the post-World War II years, Jean and Peg first became a "team" when they co-directed Colbytown Camp in New Hampshire for European refugee girls and New Hampshire and Boston inner-city children. Today, Colby-Sawyer College pays tribute to that time with a permanent exhibit of Peg’s photographs and stories about the children, which are mounted in the college lodge on campus.

SUCO honored Jean and Peg with a college-funded scholarship in their names for incoming students who have been outstanding in community work in high school.

As their 80th year approached, Jean and Peg sold their beloved "Fiddlehead Wood" home in upstate New York to join the Havenwood-Heritage Heights Retirement Community in Concord, N.H., with the happy feeling of "coming home" to the state they loved so long. Jean promptly volunteered for many committees and frequently was called to help at the AFSC Peace Action office and the Society of the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.

In all these connections, she quickly became highly respected for her wisdom, insight and compassion. Her smile was famous! Her quiet way of reaching out to all in need and generously sharing a large portion of her pension with humanitarian, environmental and arts groups is a powerful example for the rest of us. Her whole life exemplified the belief that it is "better to light a candle than to curse the darkness."

She is survived by a brother, M. Roy London Jr. of Westwood, Mass.; and Peg Cawley of Havenwood Heritage Heights, Concord, N.H., with whom she shared a home for almost half a century.

The Concord Friends Meeting will lead a Memorial Meeting in the Quaker tradition. This Memorial Meeting will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, in the Havenwood Auditorium, 33 Christian Ave.

In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to contribute in Jean’s name to the American Friends Service Committee, the Concord Friends Meeting, N.H., or the non-profit humanitarian organization of your choice.
