Gary M. Putnam

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Gary M. Putnam, age 56, of West Main Street entered into eternal rest on Monday morning Nov. 22, 2004, at his home.

He was born Jan. 3, 1948, in Cooperstown, son of Emma Tooley Putnam and the late Albert J. Putnam. Gary was raised in Van Hornesville and was a graduate of Van Hornesville High School. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1968.

He had worked for Smith Ford Dealership in Cooperstown, Cherry Burroughs in Little Falls and for 10 years with John Forbes Building Contractors, retiring in 1984. He had lived in Richfield Springs for the past year, coming from Mohawk.

Gary had a strong love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his friends and family, especially his two grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by many.

Surviving besides his mother, Emma Putnam, are two daughters and their husbands, April and Michael Weeks of Milford, Pa., Marcia Putnam-Todd and Douglas of Norwood, Mass.; his loving companion, Donna Ricci of Richfield Springs; two brothers, Joseph and Kevin Putnam, both of Richfield Springs; two sisters, Susan Putnam of Richfield Springs, Amy and her husband, Duane, Young, of the town of Columbia; one uncle, Erwin Putnam, of Cherry Valley; two grandchildren, Ryan and Evan Weeks, both of Milford, Pa.; one niece, Rebecca Young; and a nephew, Joshua Young.

Funeral service will be Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. Carolee Smith will officiate.

Mr. Putnam will be laid to rest with military honors in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, at a later time convenient to the family.

Calling hours will be two hours before the funeral service (6 to 8 p.m.).

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Ralph G. Titch

ONEONTA — Ralph G. Titch, 81, of Oneonta went to be with our Lord on Nov. 23, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

He was born May 29, 1923, in Shavertown, the son of Archibald and Nora (Lovelace) Titch. Ralph was married to Dorothy Close Truesdell of Delhi for more than 20 years. He then married Blanche Cole on Dec. 29., 1999, in Northville. She still survives him.

Ralph owned and operated a dairy farm for about 28 years until his retirement. He then moved to Tucson, Ariz.

He attended Elm Park United Methodist and Plymouth Baptist churches. Ralph loved playing cards and Ping-Pong and had a great love for riding his motorcycle.

He is survived by his children, Robert Titch and his wife, Margaret, of Hobart; Joan Morell and her husband, Clarence, of Stamford; Barbara Klueg and her husband, Richard, of Northville; Phyllis Bellows and her husband, Ron, of Surf Side Beach, S.C., William Titch and his wife, Jean, of Phoenix, Ariz., Carol Lemmon and her husband, Robert, of Walton; as well as 13 grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three step-grand children. Ralph is also survived by his sisters, Edith Liddle of Hamden and LaVerna Murphy of Walton; and two brothers-in-law Robert and Edward Cole.

A brother, Floyd Titch, predeceased him.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions can be made in Ralph’s memory to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care. 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the A.O. Fox Nursing Home Activities Fund, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Kevin L. Griswold

MARTINSBURGS, W.Va. — Kevin L. "Kelly" Griswold, 53, passed away Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at his home.

Born March 28, 1951, in Oneonta, he was the son of the late James A. and Ruth Whalen Griswold.

Kevin was an engineer for Corning Glass, then World Kitchen, where he worked for 27 years. He was also an avid golfer.

He will be joining his parents in the hereafter.

Kevin will always remain in the memories of his loving wife, Joanne M. Conner Griswold, his son, Kevin Griswold Jr. of New Bern, N.C., his two daughters, Colleen Henry and husband Ali, and Karen Griswold of Martinsburg, and his brother, James A. Griswold Jr. of Liberty.

A celebration of a life lived will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Rosedale Funeral Home Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Berkeley County Humane Society, 554 Charles Town Rd., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401 or American Lung Association of West Virginia, 415 Dickinson St., Charleston, W.Va. 25339.

All arrangements are being handled by Rosedale Funeral Home and Cemetery, Martinsdale, W.Va.

Elizabeth G. Vessey

DOWNSVILLE — Private funeral services for Elizabeth G. Vessey, 94, of Downsville will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29.

She passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital after a heart attack.

The Rev. Joseph L. Upole of the Colchester Community Church will officiate.

Donald A. Yager

WELLS BRIDGE — Donald A. Yager, 45, of Wells Bridge passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, while deer hunting.

He was born April 29, 1959, in Oneonta, the son of Raymond L. and Evelyn (Markel) Yager.

Don married Linda K. Stevens on Aug. 27, 1988, in Otego, which ended in separation.

He worked in the maintenance department at Corning in Oneonta, where he had served as union president for several years. Don was a great outdoorsman, enjoying hunting deer and turkey and archery as well as shooting skeet. He also was a NASCAR fan. Don belonged to the Mid-State Antique Stock Car Club. He also enjoyed watching football games. Don will be deeply missed by all of those who knew him.

Don is survived by his wife, Linda, of Oneonta; his two daughters, Danielle A. Yager of Oneonta and Dyana A. Yager of Mount Vision and her boyfriend, Brett Chiodo; his stepchildren, Jennifer L. Carr and her fiance, Lou, of Oneonta, Staci L. Beers and her husband, Tom, of East Meredith, Gary F. Bushek of East Meredith and Anthony P. Bushek of Oneonta, as well as seven stepgrandchildren; his companion, Mary Cottone of Wells Bridge; two brothers, David C. Yager and his wife, Kathryn, of Oneonta and Richard R. Yager and his wife, Sara-Jane, of Otego; and his sister Sharon Cook and her husband, Phillip, of Sidney Center;

His parents, Raymond and Evelyn Yager, predeceased him. Two sisters, Barbara Haney and Gail Finch, also predeceased Don.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Disease Research Foundation National Office, 50 Court St. — 306A, Brooklyn, NY 11201-4801 in Don’s memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Robert Lindholm

ANDES — Robert C. Lindholm, 78, of Wolf Road, Andes, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford, where he had been a resident since Jan. 8, 2003.

He was born Aug. 19, 1926, in Brooklyn to Charles and Borghild Olsen Lindholm.

Robert was a retired lab technician for Coney Island Hospital in New York City. He collected guns and knives and loved dogs and horses.

He is survived by his friends, Robert and Ann Archibald and Dorothea Lage.

Committal services will be held in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Helen C. Beach

WELLS BRIDGE — Helen C. Beach, 88, of Wells Bridge passed away Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born June 3, 1916, in the town of Sidney, the daughter of Robert D. and Pauline (Boyd) Couse.

She was a lifelong resident of Wells Bridge and a graduate of Unadilla Central School, Class of 1932.

Helen was a retired employee of the Bendix Corporation in Sidney, having been employed for more than 41 years. Most recently, she had been a Wells Bridge correspondent for the Walton Reporter newspaper.

She was a member of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, honorary member of the Wells Bridge Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Wells Bridge Senior Citizens.

Helen is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Margaret and Robert Killmeier of Unadilla and Betty Geertgens of Wells Bridge; her son, Charles L. Beach of Sidney; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral and committal services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. David Steensma, pastor of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Saturday, Nov. 27, from 10 a.m. until time of the service at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Bridge First Responders or the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Velma M. Riggs

SIDNEY — Velma Marie Riggs, 85, of Sidney passed away Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

She was born Feb. 11, 1919, daughter of the late Edward and Florence (Copley) Jacobson in Sidney.

Velma retired from E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney and was a member of the First Congregational Church in Sidney as well as the American Legion Auxiliary in Sidney.

She married Arthur James Riggs on July 30, 1944.

Jim predeceased her April 6, 2000. She is also predeceased by her brother Edward Jacobson.

She is survived by her friend, Glenn S. "Greek" Figary of Unadilla; her sisters-in-law, Betty Riggs of Mount Upton, Lucal Jones of Sidney and Alcina Smith of Windsor; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral Services will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. Pat Robinson, pastor of the First Congregational Church in Sidney, will officiate.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Sidney.

Arrangements are by the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Elizabeth G. Vessey

DOWNSVILLE — Private funeral services for Elizabeth G. Vessey, 94, of Downsville, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29.

She passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital following a heart attack.

The Rev. Joseph L. Upole of the Colchester Community Church will officiate.

Interment will be in Paige Cemetery, Downsville.

She was born Feb. 19, 1910, in Downsville, the daughter of Alfred and Cora (Hulbert) Griffith.

A graduate of Downsville Central School, she attended Skidmore College where she received her bachelor’s degree. She earned her master’s degree from State University College at Oneonta.

A lifelong resident of Downsville, she was married to the Rev. Clifford Vessey on June 14, 1934.

Elizabeth taught first grade at Downsville Central School from the early ’50s until she retired in 1975. She was active with the Downsville Public Library after her retirement. She was a member of the Colchester Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Philip and Toni Vessey of Downsville and Stephen and Kristin Vessey of Bowling Green, Ohio; two grandchildren, Nathan Vessey of Houston, Tex., and Samantha Vessey of Denver, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren, Renee Vessey of Houston, Texas and Adeline Vessey of Denver, Colo.

Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at the Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville.

Nicolas Natale

DELAND, Fla. — Nicolas Natale, 92, former resident of Phoenix, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2004, in Deland, Fla., where he had made his home since 1989.

Born in Cadosia, he graduated from Worcester High School and Albany Business College. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II as a sergeant in Texas and California. He owned and operated the Worcester Theatre for a number of years. Mr. Natale retired in 1977 as an accountant with General Electric Corp., Syracuse. He moved to Florida in 1989.

He was a former parishioner at St. Stephen’s Church in Phoenix, member of the Holy Name Society, a fourth-degree Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 5082 of Baldwinsville, a baseball fan and golfer.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine (Jane) Natale; son, Robert Natale of Phoenix; brother, Dominic Natale of Westminister, Calif.; and sister, Comelia Lozier of Albany.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Gemma M. Natale, in 1979, a brother, John Natale, and sister, Mary Bobnick.

Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of CNY, 441 W. Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204.

Orthello Bice

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Orthello Harry Bice, 83, of Graham, N.C., died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Bice was born in Edmeston. He was a retired contractor, a member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church and a veteran of W.W.II, serving in the United States Navy Seabees.

Survivors include his daughter, Ginnie (Keith) Hall of Mebane, N.C.; son, Alan (Sue) Bice, at home; grandchildren, Lisa (Lee) Sandridge, Jay (Elizabeth) Camp, Sara (Hamish Coates) Bice, Alison Bice and Lauren Bice; and great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Will, Josh and Lavina.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Werlau Bice, parents, Harry and Margie Crandall Bice, and sisters, Lillian Simmons and Beatrice Benson.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at McClure Funeral Chapel in Graham. Dr. Dace A. Lewis Jr. and the Rev. John W. Johnson will officiate.

The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, prior to the service Other times they will be at the residence.

Lourdes Sitterley

STAMFORD — Lourdes V. Sitterley, 89, of Stamford, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta following an extended illness.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1915, in the Philippines, the daughter of the late Genovevo and Gerarda (Tabuzo) Villegas.

Mrs. Sitterley was a registered nurse and had worked at Albany Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany, prior to her retirement. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Stamford.

Her husband, Alfred Sitterley of Stamford; her children, Robert Sitterley of Forest, Va., Florence Kunnas of Mansfield, Ohio, Beverly Sann of Silver Bay, and Alice Benjamin of Stamford, survive her. Eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, at St. Joseph’s Church, Oxford.

Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Oxford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, or the American Cancer Society.

Frederick Roberts

MILLINTON, Tenn. — Frederick (Fred) Allen Roberts, 72, of Millington, Tenn., died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Covington Manor, Covington, Tenn.

He was born in Cooperstown on Sept. 30, 1932, the son of the late Cassius Roberts and Emma Davis Roberts of the Town of New Lisbon.

He grew up in the town of New Lisbon and graduated from Morris Central School in 1951. He joined the United States Air Force after graduation and made it his career. He did his basic training at Sampson Air Force Base and served tours of duty in Korea, Greenland, the Philippines and twice in Vietnam. He retired a master sergeant after 23 years in 1974. After retirement, he lived several years in Kansas City, Mo., and worked for Lear-Seagler. In later years, he made his home in Millington, Tenn., and together with his wife, ran a beauty supply store.

Fred, the husband of Sun H. Roberts; also leaves a daughter, Evelyn Roberts McDaniel of Ocala, Fla., one son, Wendell Roberts of Lake Park, Ga., two sisters, Dorothy Manley of Hartwick and Nancy Parker of Landisville, Pa., two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Services were under the arrangement of Munford Funeral Home, Millington Chapel and interment was in Forest Hills West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, with full military honors.

Esther S. Taylor

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — There will be a memorial service for Esther S. Taylor of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Otego, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin officiating.

Esther has gone to be with the Lord, reuniting with her husband of 60 years, Ivan (Bill) Taylor.

She is survived by her daughter, Claudia Woodard of New Berlin; her son, Ted Taylor of Afton; grandson, Rodney Earl and his wife, Mary, and two great grandsons, Ezra and Ian of Guilford; a grandson, Todd Woodard and his wife, Liz, and two great-grandsons, Robert and Matthew of Franklin. Also, her sister-in-law, Norma and her husband, Tony; her niece, Mary and her husband, Skip, all of Tennessee and a nephew, Stanley and his wife Bobbie of Mississippi.

There will be no calling hours.

The family sincerely thanks the wonderful people at Chase Memorial Nursing Home for helping to make Esther’s final journey a caring and peaceful one.

Flowers are welcome, or donations could be made to the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin, NY 13411 in loving memory of Esther S. Taylor.
