Arlene W. Gaughan

MIDDLEFIELD — Mrs. Arlene W. Gaughan, 82, of Middlefield died early Sunday morning, Nov. 28, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Arlene was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Cooperstown, the daughter of John Stacy and Mildred (Marsh) Wilson.

She married James A. Gaughan Sr. on Dec. 12, 1946, in Cooperstown. Mr. Gaughan died Aug. 20, 1987.

A lifelong area resident, Arlene attended grade school in Middlefield and later graduated from Cherry Valley High School. She then attended college in Cobleskill and graduated with an associate’s degree in industrial management.

Her first place of employment was in the dietary department at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. Upon her marriage to James Gaughan in 1946, she devoted all her time to raising her family and caring for their home. As her children became older, she was employed as a waitress at the lunch counter in the former J.J. Newberry Co. department store on Main Street in Cooperstown, a position she held for 17 years until retiring in the early 1980s.

Arlene loved flowers and, in her later years, greatly enjoyed sharing her knowledge of them while helping out her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Richard Hoag, at Valley View Greenhouse in Middlefield.

Arlene was a member of the Middlefield United Methodist Church and was active with the United Methodist Women. She also enjoyed crocheting.

Arlene is survived by her children, Chuck Gaughan and his wife, Vicky, of Cherry Valley, Mrs. Sharon Curcio of Cooperstown, Mrs. Judy Baker and her husband, Dennis, of Cooperstown, and Mrs. Barbara Hoag and her husband, Richard, of Middlefield; her stepchildren, Mrs. Margo Norman and her husband, William, of Schenectady, and William Gaughan and his wife, Suzi, of Huntington Station, Long Island; her grandchildren, Kelli, Barry and Charles A. Gaughan Jr. of Cherry Valley, Joseph S. Curcio Jr. and Jennifer Curcio of Cooperstown, Patrick and Jessica Baker of Cooperstown, Wendy and Adam (Baker) Lichtman of Cooperstown, Bonnie Hoag and Kevin Bear of Livingston Manor, Richard Hoag Jr. and Kelly Harris of Fly Creek, Mary Gaughan of Massachusetts, William (Billy) Norman Jr. and Holly Boss of Esperance, Mike and Sara Norman of Schenectady, Dylan and Carrie Gaughan of Long Island, James A. Gaughan III of San Diego, Calif., and Karena and Brian Dingman of San Diego, Calif.; her great-grandchildren, Brianna and Kevin Bear Jr., Caitlin Baker, Ethan Lichtman, Trevor Norman, James Jeffery Gaughan, Devasha Solomon, and Jestry, Brianna and Brendon Dingman; and several cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son-in-law, Joseph S. Curcio Sr.; and two stepsons, John ("Jack") Gaughan and James A. Gaughan Jr. and his wife, Karen.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor of the Middlefield United Methodist Church, officiating. The Service of Committal and burial will follow in the Middlefield Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, when Arlene’s family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Middlefield First Responders, care of Kim Gohde, 147 Gately Road, Schenevus, NY 12155, or to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326, or to a charity or an organization of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

William McManus

ONEONTA — William P. McManus, 74, of Oneonta passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at his residence.

He was born March 16, 1930, in Ireland, the son of James and Mae (Penrose) McManus.

He married Ginette Courtillat on June 16, 1956.

Bill was a former executive director of the Oneonta Housing Authority.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Oneonta Rotary, and served as a former vice president of Oneonta Little League.

He is survived by his wife, Ginette McManus; his children, Yvette Mitchell and her husband, Jim, of Glenmont, and James McManus of Oneonta; three sisters and a brother, Ethna McManus of Ireland, Emer Geraghty of Gloversville, Hubert McManus of Ireland, and Eva McManus of Ireland; as well as five nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in St. Mary’s Church, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Everett Montenegro

NEW BERLIN — Everett Montenegro Jr., 47, of New Berlin died Nov. 26, 2004, in Albany.

He was born July 2, 1957, in Manhattan, the son of Everett Montenegro and Nellie Malendez, who survive.

Everett and Mary (Harshbarger) Montenegro were together for 10 years and were married on Sept. 6, 2003. She survives him.

Everett spent his childhood in Connecticut.

He worked as a HVAC mechanic for MIB Hospital in Cooperstown. Everett served in the United States Navy from July 26, 1974, through Aug. 6, 1976, as an airman apprentice on the USS Coral Sea.

He was a wonderful son, husband, father, brother and friend. Thank you for bringing so much joy to our lives. We’ve cried together, laughed together, shared the good times and the bad. We always came through strong. We love you and will always miss hearing your voice and hearing you "rock out" on your guitar. Having you be a part of our lives has truly been a blessing. You will always stay alive in our hearts.

He is survived by his children, Chris Montenegro, Long Island, Marina Montenegro, Long Island, Kristen Montenegro, New Berlin, and Jasmine Montenegro, New Berlin; sisters and a brother, Linda Montenegro, Brooklyn, Susan Montenegro, Manhattan, and Kenny Montenegro, Connecticut; and his half sister, Noel.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Patty and Debbie.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Nov. 29, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Stephen Reese of the Columbus Community Church, New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Donald R. Meade

MIDDLEBURGH — Donald Richard Meade died suddenly Nov. 26, 2004, at Bassett Hospital in Cobleskill.

Donnie was born Feb. 27, 1944, in the village of Lexington, the son of Donald Richard Meade Sr. and Zelma Dauley Meade.

He served in the United States Army from 1965-1967 and the Reserves until 1971.

He was married to Sandra Martin on July 13, 1968. He had lived in Middleburgh for the past two and a half years, after retiring. Donnie and Sandy lived in Prattsville, in the home he built, for 33 years before moving to Middleburgh.

He is survived by his wife, and his children, Scott and his wife, Kate, of Niskayuna, and Sonya Meade and her husband, Jaime Kikpole, of Albany. He was the beloved Papa to his grandchildren, Mackenzie, Hannah, Emily, Jordan and Colin of Niskayuna. He is also survived by his sisters, Carole Kondras of Boca Raton, Fla., and Janet Clum. He was very close to his wife’s family, who considered him not only a brother but a best friend.

Donnie was predeceased by his parents and his son, Richard Donald.

Donnie was a gifted carpenter, and was widely known for his craftsmanship.

His greatest joys were his children and grandchildren, whom he visited every weekend.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, with Pastor Mary Wisner officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville. Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 29, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Middleburgh Emergency Volunteer Ambulance Corp., 12122 or Prattsville Rescue Squad, 12468.

Elizabeth Hering

AUBURN — Elizabeth Mae (Shultis) Hering, 88, formerly of Hillview Drive, Union Springs, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Auburn Nursing Home.

She was born in Maybrook, the daughter of the late Dewitt and Flora Allen Shultis and stepdaughter of Nell Shultis.

Elizabeth graduated from Cornell University in 1939 with a bachelor’s degree in child psychology.

She married Chalmers Borthwick Hering in June 1939. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Union Springs, and also a member of Leisure Hour Literary Club.

Elizabeth was employed with Otsego County as a probation officer for 20 years. She was also an avid gardener.

Surviving are four sons, Carl Borthwick Hering and his wife, Roucepha, of Cayuga, Bruce Dewitt Hering and his wife, Doris, of Rotterdam, Keith Loren Hering of Atlanta, Ga., and David Charles Hering and his wife, Noralie, of Kansas City; two sisters, Louise Wolven of Saugerties and Elsie Shultis of Bearville; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Chalmers B. Hering, who died in 1987, and a sister, Ruth Kinns.

Friends are invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 29, 2004, at the Brew Funeral Home, 48 South St., Auburn. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Maxatawny Zion Cemetery, Kutztown, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Finger Lakes, 1130 Corporate Drive, Auburn, NY 13021, in memory of Elizabeth.

William R. Grup

HARTWICK — William R. Grup, 76, of county Highway No. 16, town of Exeter, entered into eternal rest Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on Dec. 18, 1927, in Gloversville, son of the late William and Florence Chesbrough Grup. William was raised in Gloversville and was a graduate of Gloversville High School.

An honorably discharged United States Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific during World War II.

On Dec. 31, 1949, he married the former S. Patricia Lake in Colorado Springs, Colo. After a loving and devoted union of 50 years, she preceded him in death on March 1, 2000.

For 33 years, Mr. Grup worked in the shipping and receiving department of the Remington Arms Company, retiring in 1983. A resident of Hartwick since 1962, he and his wife came from Ilion.

William had a true sense of community. He had served as Exeter town councilman and for more than 16 years as town justice. He was a member of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department; Schuyler Lake Lodge No. 162 F&AM, where he served as Master in 1972; a Past Patron in 1972; and member of Arbutus Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Richfield Springs; Scout Master of the Schuyler Lake Boy Scout Troop; an assistant coach with the Richfield Springs Little League in 1970, as well as a member of the Exeter Historical Society and Winfield Vets Club.

To all who knew Bill, they will remember him as a warm, friendly, caring man who was always there to help others. He will be greatly missed by many.

Surviving him are a son, William and his wife, Laura Grup, of Richfield Springs; two daughters, Sharon and her husband, Alan Dutton, of Cooperstown, and Theresa Schweitzer of Felton, Pa.; one sister, Doris Klusner of Arizona; five grandchildren, Kristen and Kyle Grup, Lindsey and Neil Dutton and Patrick Schweitzer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, Pat, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Grup, one brother, Howard Grup, and a sister, Eleanor Mazano.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Members of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday evening for services at 8 p.m.

Interment in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2004.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

John R. Wassenaar

MORRIS — John R. Wassenaar, 68, of Morris died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at the Albany Medical Center.

He was born in Monroe on May 6, 1936, the son of Riner and Mabel (Anderson) Wassenaar.

He graduated from Morris Central School, class of 1954, and from Cornell University (class of 1958) with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture.

He served his country in the U.S. Army for two years and was stationed in Germany.

He married Patricia Lutz in Delhi on Oct. 11, 1964, a marriage of more than 40 years.

John was a dairy farmer and truck driver all his life. He was a lifelong member of the Morris Baptist Church and had served as one of the church deacons for nearly 50 years. He was a charter member and director of the South New Berlin Coop, and had served as a councilman on the Morris Town Board and was currently a commissioner of the Morris Fire District.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Morris; his children, Jean Wassenaar of Charlotte, N.C., and Janet Johnson and husband Jeff of Norwich. He was blessed with his two grandsons, Corey and Ryan; as well as many special and close friends.

He was predeceased by a brother, Clarence Wassenaar, and his parents.

Calling hours will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at the Morris Baptist Church with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund and the Rev. Daniel Lambertson officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Morris Baptist Church or the Morris Emergency Squad in John’s memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Doris Dropp

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Doris Elizabeth (Truscott) Dropp, 81, of Summerville was unexpectedly taken home to our Lord on Nov. 25, 2004.

She was born Aug. 24, 1923, in the town of Meredith, a daughter of Edgar B. and H. Luella (Stein) Truscott.

Doris graduated from Delaware Academy and Central School, Delhi, in 1941. For more than 40 years she worked for the Delhi Telephone Company, beginning as a telephone operator, then working in the business office and later as treasurer. In 1985 she retired and moved to Summerville with her husband so they could be warm, stop shoveling snow and most importantly enjoy being with their grandchildren.

Doris married George Paul Dropp on Nov. 7, 1943. Before moving to South Carolina, they had each lived in the Delhi area for more than 60 years.

While living in Delhi, Doris was a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. While living in Summerville, as a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, she especially enjoyed the fellowship of the women of St. Catherine’s and working on The Epistle.

All of her life Doris loved music. She enjoyed dancing, singing in high school and church choirs and playing piano for family, friends and occasionally as an accompanist with a square dance band. She also loved to read, was a wonderful traveling companion and was well-known for her delicious baked goods.

Perhaps Doris will best be remembered (both North and South) as a hardworking, caring and fun-to-be-with woman who dearly loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, extended family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her well.

Doris is survived by her three children, Cynthia Waterman and her husband, Frank, of Oneonta, Martha Gage and her husband, C. Paul, of Summerville, S.C., and Edgar Dropp and his wife, Jeryl, of Richfield Springs. Grandchildren include Jennifer and Aaron Gage of Summerville, Richard Dropp of Brooklyn, Tara Dropp of Raleigh, N.C.; and great-granddaughter, Katrina. Doris is also survived by her brother, Dr. Frederick Truscott of Hobe Sound, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Josephine Dropp and brother-in-law, Paul Dropp of Oxford; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Doris was predeceased by her husband, George; brothers, Arnold and Howard Truscott; and sisters, Mildred Clark, Laura Mostert and Edna Mugglin.

There will be no calling hours.

A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Michael R. Lumpkin officiating.

Burial will take place at the Walton Cemetery in the spring at the convenience of the family.

Ruth C. Barney

BINGHAMTON — Ruth C. Barney, 96, of Binghamton went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004.

A beautiful, caring, genteel woman, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a faithful friend to many. Family was the center of her life.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was predeceased by her parents, Sarah and Herbert S. Cramer; a brother, Kenneth; Dr. Moses Godshall, her stepfather; her beloved husband, Lewis H.W. Barney, the love of her life who she forever held in her heart; and Vincent McEnaney, her devoted second husband and grandfather to her grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Richard L. and Paula Barney, Stroudsburg, Pa., Bruce H. and Kathleen Barney, Brackney, Pa., and Lewis H. and Patricia Barney, Oneonta; daughters of the heart, Ruth Ferrari, Vestal, Ileen Barney, Marmet, W.Va.; her grandchildren, Lewis Barney Jr., Caleb Barney, Danielle Dean, Bruce and Rebecca Barney, Keith and Rita Barney, Kim and Rick Huff, Scott and Dina Barney, Karen Barney and Steve Stetson, Cary and Mark Matias, Elizabeth and Robert Tilwick, Timothy and Amy Barney, Tanya and Iordonis Petridis, Blythe and Steven Evans; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was born Ruth Cramer on Feb. 27, 1908, in Scranton, Pa. In 1917, she moved to the Binghamton area with her parents.

Her father was a well-known professional photographer.

At the age of 11 she worked part-time for Woolworth’s in downtown Binghamton. She later graduated from Binghamton Central High School and was employed by Binghamton Light, Heat and Power, now NYSEG, from 1925 to 1935, and by the Binghamton School District from 1959 until her retirement in 1978.

Mrs. Barney was a past member of the Binghamton Women’s Club, Binghamton Civic Club, the Monday Afternoon Club and since 1920 a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church of Binghamton. In 2003, the church recognized her for being a member for 83 years.

Spending time at her cottage on Quaker Lake with friends and family was one of her favorite pastimes. Her many pets benefited from her love and attention.

The family would like to thank the staff of the third floor at Elizabeth Church Manor and Lourdes Hospice for their compassionate care.

Funeral services will be held at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Stephen R. Heiss, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in memory of Ruth to Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 83 Main St., Binghamton, NY 13905 or Elizabeth Church Manor, 863 Front St., Binghamton, NY 13905 or Lourdes Hospice, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, NY 13905.

Steven C. Incze

WALTON — Steven C. Incze Sr., 46, of Walton passed away unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton.

He was born in Romania on Dec. 2, 1957, the son of Louis and Maria (Nagy) Incze.

For the past 15 years, Steve worked as a toolmaker at Mold-A-Matic in Oneonta.

He was a member of Club Royal in Walton. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fishing and canoeing. He had a special love for his dogs.

He is survived by his children, Steven C. Incze Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, of Morris, Jessica and Carl Blocker of Ft. Walton, Fla., and Kristina Incze of Walton, and their mother, Janice Incze of Unadilla; his grandchildren, Cameron Incze, Alana and Collin Blocker; his mother, Maria Incze of Mohawk; his two brothers and a sister, Louis Incze of Ilion, Maria Brown of Newport and John Incze of Gloucester, Va.

He is also survived by his companion in life, Karen Stanton, and her children, Seth and Courtney Stanton of Walton; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Cronin officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Springfield Center Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
