Chris McCumber

WINCHESTER, Va. — Christopher Marc "Chris" McCumber, 35, of Winchester died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at his home.

Mr. McCumber was born Nov. 21, 1969, in Sidney, the son of Stanley F. McCumber Jr. of Tyner and Elaine M. Halaquist of Winchester.

He had been employed at various construction jobs and was a devoted father.

Surviving with his parents are four children, Brandon McCumber of New Berlin, Keegan, Dylan and Kinzie-May McCumber, all of Unadilla. He is also survived by five sisters, Stephanie Swartwout of Winchester, Michelle Kreamer of Corning, Melinda Seminera of Oxford, Kelly McCumber and Athena McCumber of Tyner; four brothers, Nathan McCumber, residing in Florida, Jason McCumber of Winchester, Stephen Coons of Louisiana, and Thomas Seminera of Oxford; his stepmother, Estelle McCumber of Tyner; paternal grandparents, Stanley and Inez McCumber; and his maternal grandmother, Patricia Halaquist, all of Sidney.

A private family memorial will be held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

A funeral service will be held Friday, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Home in Sidney. Prior to the service the family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m.

Interment will be in Prospect Hill, Sidney at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Christopher M. McCumber Burial Fund, care of Stephanie Swartwout, 207 Bellview Ave., Winchester, VA 22601.

Effie May Kiewlicz

COBLESKILL — Effie May (Chum) Kiewlicz passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004; loving mother and grandmother.

She was born Oct. 9, 1923.

She is survived by her sons, Richard Townsend, James Townsend and his wife, Maxine, Robert Townsend and his wife, Rebecca, Billy Kiewlicz, John Kiewlicz and wife, Irene; daughters, Tammy Scholze and her husband, Darien, and Sandy Kiewlicz; sister, Viola Edgar; and grandchildren, Samantha Sheppard, James P. Townsend, Dusty Johns, Snapper Johns, Cricket Scholze, Skippy Scholze, Tohalie Johnson, Ovaline Jones, Buffy Townsend, Robbie Townsend, Johnny Kiewlicz, Tommy Kiewlicz and Andy Kiewlicz. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

She is gone but never forgotten.

Mildred Telford

WALTON — Mildred "Millie" Telford of Walton, a lifelong area resident, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. She was 76.

Mrs. Telford was born March 4, 1928, in Walton to William and Lena Nichols Finch.

She was educated in Walton and graduated from Walton High School in 1945. She earned her nursing license from Delhi College in 1947.

On Oct. 13, 1947, she married Robert Telford at the Finch Homestead in Northfield.

She worked as an LPN for Smith Nursing Home and at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton.

Mrs. Telford was a member of the Northfield Community Church and a former member of the Walton Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and her family was a big part of her life.

Mildred Telford is survived by her loving husband, Robert, at home in Walton; a daughter, Nancy Salton of Windsor; a grandson, Garrick Salton and his special friend, Jenna; and sisters Clara Seely of Oneonta and Helen Finch of Sebring, Fla.

She was predeceased by her parents, a sister, Bertha Harris, and a brother, William Finch.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, with Pastor Delbert Ripley of the Northfield Community Church officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

There are no prior calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to William B. Ogden Free Library or Northfield Community Church in the name of Mildred Telford would be appreciated.

James R. Heath

PHOENIX, Ariz. — James R. Heath, 68, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at his residence after a brief illness.

Jim was born June 4, 1936, in the town of Butternuts, the son of William Olin Heath and Edith Mae (Wilbur) Heath.

Jim was a 1955 graduate of Unadilla Central School and a graduate of Albany Business College.

After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1960, he started his business career as an auditor for New York state and then moved into the health-care field. He served as administrator at hospitals in Endicott, Massena and Catskill. After semi-retiring from hospital administration, Jim moved to Pennsylvania, where he sold real estate, and then to Winslow, Ariz., where he was a business coordinator.

After being predeceased by his wife, Jean, in 1997, and officially retiring Dec. 31, 1999, Jim had enjoyed two of his favorite pastimes, traveling and golf.

Jim is survived by brothers and sisters, Chris Camp of Ocean City, S.C., Florence Coon of Oxford, Bea Allen of Rome, Fred Heath of Sidney, and Dan Heath of Oneonta. He is also survived by his children, James Heath Jr. and his wife, Amy, of Binghamton, William Heath and his wife, Terri, of Unadilla, Linda Heath of Peoria, Ariz., Martin Mears and his wife, Deborah, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Greg Mears and his wife, Rhonda, of Marietta, Ohio. His grandchildren, Josh and Sarah Heath; his stepgrandchildren, Ty, Alisha, Chris and Stephany; many nieces and nephews and many close and dear friends also survive him.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla (directly off Exit 10 of I-88), from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, when the family will be in attendance. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Sidney, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014 or a charity of one’s choice.

Elfriede Menke

DELHI — Elfriede Menke, 86, of Delhi went to be with her Lord on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on Sept. 6, 1918, in Volkwardengen, Germany, the daughter of George and Emma (Dittmer) Muller.

She married Herman Menke on March 4, 1940, in Brazil. After a long and devoted union of 63 years, he predeceased her Feb. 15, 2004.

Elfriede especially enjoyed and took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens. In years past, she felt very accomplished in many fund-raising dinners that she organized for the Delhi Grange and Immanuel Lutheran Church. She could always be counted on to help family, friends and neighbors in need, either by cooking meals and/or encouraging conversation.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will be missed dearly.

She is survived by her children, Hilda and Robin Turner of Hobart, Gertrude and Stewart Rosa of Apalachin, Herman and Barbara Menke of Treadwell and Paul and Candice Menke of Delhi; grandchildren, Damon and Tina Stewart, Jay and Edith Stewart, Christopher and Melissa Rosa, Todd and Sarah Rosa, Scott and Jennifer Rosa, Sarah and John Macaluso, Robert and Holly Menke, Selena, Mindy, and Morgan Menke; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Helmuth and Gerta Muller of Brazil; sisters-in-law, Else Muller of Brazil, Greta Muller of Brazil, Mathilde Rabeler of Delhi and Frieda Menke of Bovina; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her brothers Otto and Fritz Muller, both of Brazil.

Funeral services in celebration of Elfriede’s life will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 6, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Richard Neibanck officiating.

Family and friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5, where the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the West Delhi Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make memorial contributions in Elfriede’s memory are asked to consider the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, or Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 116 Main St., Delhi, NY 13753.

Donald K. Adair Jr.

ONEONTA — Donald K. Adair Jr., 69, of Oneonta died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at his home in the Little Red School Community where he had lived for three years.

He was born in Queens on May 18, 1935, the only son of Donald K. Adair Sr. and Jean (Amis) Adair. His family moved to Gilbertsville, where he grew up and gradated from Gilbertsville Central School. After attending Cornell University he served his country in the United States Navy, stationed at the Patuxant River Naval Air Base, Maryland.

Donald was married to Cynthia H. Moore at the Gilbertsville First Presbyterian Church on June 2, 1957.

He retired in 1997 from Proctor and Gamble Pharmaceuticals, Norwich, where he had worked in research for nearly 40 years.

He was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, where he formerly served as trustee, elder and Sunday School teacher.

He enjoyed working on his extensive model train collection and layout. He took much pleasure in helping family and friends complete many building projects.

Donald is survived by his wife of 47 years, Cynthia; two daughters, Robbin H. Adair of West Hartford, Conn., Laurie B. Cordato and husband Gerard of Claverack; and his much-loved grandchildren, Heather, Caleb and Brianna. Also surviving are his sister Phyllis Harper and husband John of Carmel; and two nieces and a nephew.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, at the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Gary W. Bonebrake officiating.

Private burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care or the Main Street Baptist Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Peg Harrington
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Agnes ("Peg") Underwood Harrington, 104, died Friday evening, Dec. 3, 2004, at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.Peg was born May 17, 1900, in Edmeston, the daughter of Ambler Pittman and Flora (Campbell) Underwood.She married Dr. Lysle N. Harrington on Aug. 11, 1926, at her parent’s home on South Street in Edmeston. Dr. Harrington died June 16, 1988.A 1918 graduate of Edmeston High School, she graduated in 1922 from the Albany State Teachers’ College and taught high school English in Peekskill, Fayetteville and Oneida.For many years, Dr. and Mrs. Harrington lived in Utica and Barneveld, where they were well-known for their interest in antiques and historic houses. They restored several homes, including Mappa Hall, a stone Georgian-style house constructed between 1802 and 1804 in Barneveld. Following Dr. Harrington’s retirement in 1970, they moved to Cooperstown.Peg was an accomplished gardener and a gifted musician who was still playing the piano at the age of 104.Of the Episcopal faith, she was a member of Christ Church in Cooperstown and was a resident of the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown for the past seven years.She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Richard Booth of Brooklyn, Conn., Janet and Marshall Hall of Farmville, Va., and Ellen and John Sanford of Cooperstown; six grandchildren, Margaret Homewood of Chillington, England, Janet Booth of Dresden, Maine, Jeffrey Hall of Flagstaff, Ariz., Jared Hall of Fredericksburg, Va., Peter Smith of Burlington Flats, and Elisabeth Smith-Price of Otego; five great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Benjamin and Nicholas Hall, Sydney Smith, and Elizabeth Homewood.A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Christ Church, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Samuel B. Abbott, rector, officiating.The Service of Committal and burial will be private in the Edmeston Union Cemetery. ONEONTA — Nancy Angellotti, 67, passed away Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at her home in Oneonta after a lengthy illness.She was born May 16, 1937, in Oneonta, the daughter of Leonard and Lillian (Hughes) Wheeler.Upon her graduation from Oneonta High School, Nancy was employed by the Oneonta Board of Education. Nancy resided for several years in Vorheesville, where she worked for the Guilderland school district, SUNY Albany and New York State United Teachers. Donald H. Sweet
AFTON — Donald H. Sweet, 86, of Afton passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at his home.He was born July 18, 1918, son of the late Clayton and Larena (Payne) Sweet in Guilford.Upon graduating from RIT with a degree in engineering, Don was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix as an engineer until he retired in 1981.He married Virginia Tingue on Aug. 8, 1943, in Downsville. Together they owned and operated the Flower Basket Shop in Bainbridge for 17 years. Virginia predeceased him on Feb. 13, 1998.Mr. Sweet was an active and founding member of the Bainbridge Historical Society and Bainbridge Museum. He was also a member of the F&AM of Bainbridge and Afton Lodge No. 0167 and the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge.He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Nancy Sweet, Concord, N.C., and Larry and Christine Sweet, Port Crane; five grandchildren, Brian, Jeff, Marc, Kayla and Melissa; four great-grandchildren, Melisa, Mason, Presley and Delaney; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Bud Siegel, King of Prussia, Pa.; and nieces and nephews.He was also predeceased by a son, Martin Sweet, and a sister, Dorothy Babcock.Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 6, 2004, when the family will be in attendance at the C.H. Frances O. Muller
MOUNT UPTON — Frances O. Muller, 87, of Mount Upton passed away Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.She was born Jan. 4, 1917, daughter of the late William Leslie and Carrie Irene (Constable) Smith in Trout Creek.Frannie married Frederick R. Muller on Jan. 16, 1938, in Deposit. He predeceased her on Aug. 26, 1977.She worked as a prep cook at The Old Mill Restaurant in Mount Upton for 43 years.She is survived by her son, David Muller, Oxford; two stepdaughters, Frieda Race, Walton, and Helena Offnick, Walton; dear friend, Tofela Zaczek, Mount Upton; daughter-in-law, Marjory Muller, Deposit; 29 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.She was also predeceased by her brother, Wesley, and four sisters, Claire, Dorothy, Anne and Gladys.Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, when the family will be in attendance at the C.H. OCEANSIDE — Henry Nicholas Sanna, 26, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at home.He was born July 31, 1978, in Port Jefferson, the son of Henry T. and Deborah (Gartung) Sanna.Henry was the office and warehouse manager for the Interstate Battery Company, Oceanside.Henry is survived by his parents, Henry T. and Deborah Sanna of Worcester; and eight brothers and sisters, James and Patricia Sanna of Medford, Cristal and Peter Doyle of Worcester, Rebecca, Mary, Jacob, Deborah, Timothy and David Sanna, all of Worcester; maternal grandparents, William and Elizabeth Gartung of Medford; paternal grandmother, Laleita Sanna of Norwich; maternal great-grandmother, Mary Gartung of Westford; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 6, 2004, with a Rosary service at 3 p.m. and a vigil service at 8:30 p.m. at E.J. Martin on Nov. 10, 1945. He predeceased her on Dec. 15, 1995.Mamie was a dressmaker at the Oneonta Dress Factory from 1955 until her retirement in 1966.She was a loving and caring wife and mother. She devoted her time after retirement taking special care of both her home and family.She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Paul Borger of Selkirk; her granddaughter and husband, Tracy and Joe O’Connor of Colonie; her great-grandson, Matthew O’Connor of Colonie; her sister, Rose Barkman of East Meredith; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, in the Lester R. Linda R. Mabie
SOUTH VALLEY — Linda R. Mabie, 56, passed away suddenly Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.She was born Sept. 27, 1948, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Herbert J. and Mildred A. Mabie.A lifelong area resident, she worked as a nurse’s aide at Bassett Healthcare. She was a member of the First Christian Church of South Valley.Survivors include her father, Herbert J. Mabie; a sister, Margaret Mabie; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Marsha Mabie and Art and Carol Mabie; lots of nieces, nephews and cousins.She was predeceased by her mother, Mildred Mabie.Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Terence Brant officiating. Burial will follow in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley. John A. Nolan
UNADILLA — John A. "Jack" Nolan, 95, of Unadilla died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at the BIDA Adult Home in Oxford. He was born February 28, 1909. His wife, the former Rose Jordan, died Jan. 11, 1997. Born in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of the late William and Edna Nolan.He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, a graduate of the University of Detroit, and was an Army veteran of World War II. Before his retirement he was a supervisor for the Bendix Corporation in Sidney.Surviving are one son, John A. Nolan and his wife, Vivian, Unadilla; one daughter, Maryrose Schumm and her husband, Dennis, Anacortes, Wash.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and James.The funeral was held Saturday from the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Ave., Carbondale, Pa., with the Mass in Saint Rose of Lima Church. Interment is in Saint Rose Cemetery, Carbondale.Memorial contributions may be made to Chenango County Hospice or donor’s favorite charity.

Mary E. Townsend
BLOOMVILLE — Mary E. Townsend, 84, of Bloomville passed away Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, in Stamford.She was born Dec. 27, 1919, the daughter of John and Jessie (Cleveland) Haynes.Mrs. Townsend is survived by a son, William Haynes, Bloomville; two daughters, Bonnie (Robert) Knapp, Florida, and Patty (Daniel) Polanowicz, Utica; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilber Haynes, Bloomville; a sister, Pearl Barber, Hobart; and many nieces and nephews.She enjoyed her family and they will miss her.Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, in the Bloomville United Methodist Church, Bloomville, with the Rev. Richard Lenz officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.Contributions in her memory may be made to the Bloomville United Methodist Church.Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Edith S. Barnard
SIDNEY — Edith S. Barnard, 97, of Sidney, passed away Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.
She was born Dec. 26, 1906, daughter of the late Judson and Nellie (Barnard) Hess, in Phoenix.
Edith married Ralph James Barnard on Oct. 29, 1929, in Phoenix. He predeceased her on May 12, 1973.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Nancy Barnard, Sidney; four grandsons, Michael Barnard, Sidney, Thomas E. Barnard, Las Vegas, Nev., Douglas J. Barnard, Panama City, Fla., and Scott D. Barnard, Henderson, Nev.; three great-grandchildren, Nick, Ryan and Autumn Barnard, Panama City, Fla.; and three nieces.
She was also predeceased by her son, Ralph Barnard.
Funeral and committal services will be in the spring in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad or the First Congregational Church in Sidney.
