Charles P. Gallo

ROXBURY — Charles Philip Gallo, 70, of Roxbury died at his home Monday, Dec. 6, 2004.

Charles was born in New York City on June 3, 1934.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Marianne Treanor Gallo of Roxbury; and his sons, Philip of Florida and Peter of North Carolina; his sister, Jean Alessio; and eight grandchildren.

He was a graduate of LaSalle Military Academy, 1952; Manhattan College, 1956; and Georgetown University Law Center, 1959. He was admitted to the bar March 1960; to the Appellate Division of New York State Supreme Court; the Federal District Courts (Southern and Eastern Districts); the U.S. Court of Claims; the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.

He was a partner in the law firms, first of Schaefer and Gallo; Cabell, Martin, Hammer and Gallo; and McQuigan, Gallo and Martin.

Charles was an accomplished high school athlete in football and track and field, and throughout the years he remained an avid sportsman, hunter and fisherman.

Reflections of Charles Gallo by Brother Louis DeThomasis, FSC, Ph.D., president, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota:

Friendly, engaging, energetic, committed — these are words that describe Charles’ personality.

Compassionate, intelligent, integrity, faith-filled — these are the words that capture the man, Charles Gallo.

For more than 30 years I have been blessed to know and call Charles friend; however, perhaps that’s not enough. Better yet, he was my "great friend." "Great" because Charles never was an ordinary person who did ordinary things in an ordinary way.

He cared — greatly. Whether it was his sons or his beloved wife, Marianne, Charles always cared and loved them unconditionally.

He also was strikingly committed to his high school alma mater, LaSalle Military Academy. For 50 years he enthusiastically served on its Board of Governors, and for nine of those years as a trustee.

Charles distinguished himself as an attorney who embraced his clients’ needs with professionalism and integrity. Each client was important to him as someone requiring legal assistance, and as a person with concerns and sensitivities that he always included in his professional relationships.

He exuded knowledge for the law and respect for the highest ethical conduct in the practice of the law. In essence, Charles’ dedication to the law made him a constant "learner" who was never satisfied with half-way measures when it came to his law practice and his clients.

Charles, furthermore, encountered life and embraced its challenges with a steadfast and unwavering commitment to do good for others. I can remember so many times that I would have conversations with him about personal and business situations. Always, he sought out directions and solutions in which the greatest good could he accomplished; even when those actions would cost him personally.

He loved to discuss and argue with friends. I can remember so many "bouts" of conversations with Charles in which he would become excited and animated. Always though, I could see through his interaction that Charles was not trying to win the argument; but rather he was trying to understand and to learn from the argument.

Charles was a man dedicated to truth. Truth about himself, his loved ones and the world.

Charles was a faith-filled man of action — not a pious sentimentalist. I believe he walked side-by-side with his God each day of his life. And, finally in his last days of physical suffering, I am convinced that his Lord, lying by his side, said to Charles, "Hey, Charles, I don’t want you to suffer anymore. Come home with me to my Father’s house in heaven — He needs someone like you with whom He could have a good argument. And, Charles said, "OK, let’s go!"
