Pearl M. Hodges

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. — Pearl Melissa "Betty" Hodges, 79, Crystal River, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, in Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness, Fla., after a short illness.

A native of the Oneonta area, she was born Aug. 7, 1925, to Tracy and Loretta Shelly.

She recently moved to Crystal River after residing on the Ostawa, Otego, for several years. While in Dade County, Miami, Fla., she drove a bus for the Dade County Board of Education for several years.

Mrs. Hodges was a charter member and past president of American Legion Post 1688 Ladies Auxiliary, Laurens.

She enjoyed gardening, playing shuffleboard, dancing, traveling, cooking, entertaining and spending time with her family. She was a gifted home decorator.

She was married to Jean "Buster" Jorgensen for 38 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard B. Hodges, in 1983.

Survivors include three sons, Gene A. Jorgensen and wife Maggi of Kimbolton, Ohio, Troy J. Jorgensen and wife Leanne of Cathlamet, Wash., and Richard A. Hodges and wife Andrea of Crystal River, Fla.; two daughters, Ginger J. Ruether and husband David of Crystal River, Fla., and Julie R. Turklay and husband Gary of Dunnellon, Fla.; a brother, Arthur Shelly and wife Leona of Crystal River, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were made in Florida by the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, Fla.

A memorial service and committal in the Laurens Cemetery will be announced later next spring.

Eugene A. Kludas

GREENACRES, Fla. — The youngest World War II combat veteran from the state of New York died on Pearl Harbor Day. Eugene A. "Gene" Kludas, 76, of Greenacres, Fla., and formerly of Oneonta, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 7, 2004, at JFK Hospital, Atlantis, Fla.

He was born May 30, 1928, in Davenport, the son of Arthur and Edna (Georgia) Kludas.

He graduated from Davenport Central School. Gene lived in the East Meredith area until 1944, at which time he moved to Oneonta.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and Guam.

He married Delores Meyer on June 20, 1965. Mrs. Kludas predeceased him April 2, 1996. He then married Rose Giglio Ferrara on Dec. 20, 1996, in Lake Worth, Fla.

Gene was a store manager at the Grand Union grocery store in Oneonta and also managed a store on campus at the State University College at Oneonta.

He was an avid outdoorsman. Gene hunted throughout the United States and Canada. He enjoyed talking to groups such as the Boy Scouts, Rotary, etc., about his hunting and fishing adventures.

He was a lifetime member of the Oneonta V.F.W. and the National Rifle Association, as well as the North American Hunting Gun Club and the Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Gene is survived by his wife, Rose Ferrara Kludas, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; his stepson, Gary J. Ferrara and his wife, Belinda, of Lake Worth, Fla.; as well as several brothers and sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende officiating.

Burial will be held in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego County S.P.C.A., 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326 in loving memory of Eugene A. "Gene" Kludas.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Michelle L. Stanton

WHITMORE LAKE, Mich. — Michelle L. Stanton, 31, of Whitmore Lake and formerly of Edmeston, died suddenly Dec. 6, 2004.

She was born Dec. 16, 1972, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Richard F. Stanton and Vicky Itzen.

Michelle graduated from the University of Florida. She was currently employed as a research chemist at Caymen Chemical in Whitmore Lake.

Her daughter, Brianna, of Michigan; her special friend, Dana Sanford, of Michigan; her father, Richard, of Edmeston; her mother, Vicky, of Lewisville, Texas; and her sister, Christi, of Florida, survive Michelle.

Michelle’s funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Noll officiating. Interment will follow at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Lanor Schworm

EDMESTON — Lanor Schworm, 87, of Edmeston died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, with her family by her side.

She was born Aug. 30, 1917, in Sherburne, the daughter of Albert and Ethel (Thompson) Collins.

She married Robert H. Schworm on Oct. 19, 1941.

Lanor’s first employment was at the Otsego School under the direction of Florence Chesebrough. Later, Lanor opened her home to foster children and also started a day-care center. In many ways, she raised a good number of Edmeston’s children. Lanor along with her husband, Robert, operated the family farm, which is still in operation today.

Lanor is survived by her husband, Robert; her children and their significant others, Norman R. Schworm and Cathy Jacubowski, Joyce M. and Don Van Wagner, Stella J. Schworm and Paul Jensen, Robert A. Schworm and Ann McCoy; six grandchildren, Michelle and Joe Von Dauber, Valeri and Charles Mowers, Eric Jensen, Lisa Jensen, Kaylee Schworm and Brianna Schworm; two stepgrandchildren, Heather and Alyssa McCoy; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Ellie Von Dauber; her half sister, Sue Wightman; her half brother, Bernard Lamphere; and her brothers-in-law, Leon Schworm, Earl and Lavohn Schworm.

Her brother, Albert Collins, predeceased Lanor.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Noll officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2004.

Contributions may be made in Lanor’s memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Helen E. Mayne

BURLINGTON FLATS — Helen E. Mayne, 95, of Burlington Flats went home to the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born March 1, 1909, in Edmeston, the daughter of Fred H. and Nettie (Burton) Nichols. She married Lowell Fitch Mayne on Aug. 20, 1928, in West Exeter. He predeceased her on May 26, 1984.

Helen attended the Burlington Flats United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Church Women, Home Bureau, Farm Bureau and Grange. Helen was always active. She raised Dachshund puppies, hooked rugs and was well-known for her wedding and birthday cakes. For the past several years she resided at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin where she was always dressed and ready to go. She was especially fond of their activities center.

Her children and their spouses, Herbert and Esther Mayne, Dawn Hull, Anne and Richard Weiss; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; her in-law, Irene Welch survive Helen.

Helen was predeceased by her great-grandson, Paul Prill, her brother, Henry Nichols, two sisters, Eva Crandell and Susie Harrington and her in-laws, Kenneth H. Mayne, Lilah Tice and Norma Dougherty; a son-in-law Gerald Hall.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 13, at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating. Calling hours are before the service on Monday from noon to 2 p.m.

Contributions may be made in Helen’s name to Chase Nursing Home Activities fund.

James H. Coon

RIFLE, Colo. — James Harold Coon passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs after a long illness. He was 76.

James was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Maryland, the son of Harold and Adelaide (Van Slyke) Coon.

He married Betty Jane Mabie on Aug. 23, 1947, in Worcester.

He was a truck driver for 35 years for numerous companies, retiring in 1989 and moving to Rifle in 1995.

He is survived by five sons and seven daughters, Edward and Pat Coon of Sorrento, Fla., Stephen Coon of Palm Bay, Fla., Ann and Alan Wetsell of Peyton, Colo., Susan and Duane Krutz of Fountain, Colo., David Coon and Arlene and Danny Dent, all of Rifle, Jon and Tracey Coon of Worcester, Karen and Scott Spencer of Wake Forest, N.C., Sandra Coon of Auburn, Linda Larson of San Antonio, Diane and Steve Rogers of Denver and Deforest J. and Lynn Coon of Shallotte, N.C. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Coon, and grandsons Aaron Dennis Layman and Kyle Lee Adair.

E. J. Skinner Funeral Chapel in Worcester and Rifle Funeral Home are handing arrangements.

Cremation and a memorial service will take place later at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Cooperstown Junction Cemetery.

Harry J. Nevil

COOPERSTOWN — Harry J. Nevil Jr., ("Juney") of Cooperstown died peacefully early Sunday morning, Dec. 12, 2004, at Chestnut Hill Farm, Fly Creek, with his family at his side. He was 87.

Born Sept. 14, 1917, in Montoursville, Pa., a son of Harry (Had) and Gladys Nevil. The family moved to Cooperstown in 1925, where his parents were longtime proprietors of Sherry’s Tea Room.

In 1939, Juney graduated from Mercersburg Academy, where he excelled in swimming and football. He later attended Dickinson Junior College in Williamsport, Pa., on an athletic scholarship.

From 1942 through 1945, he served his country in the 29th Division of the United States Army and landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy, in the sixth wave on D-Day. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in the Battle of St. Lo.

Mr. Nevil was the faithful husband of Margaret Nichols, whom he married on Dec. 29, 1945, in Yonkers. She predeceased him in 1993.

In 1972, the Nevil family moved to Chestnut Hill Farm, and Juney retired from the Postal Service in May of 1976. He loved sports and outdoor activities and, in his earlier years, excelled in swimming and diving.

Mr. Nevil was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128, the Mohican Club, and was a life member of the Cooperstown Fire Department. He was also a former longtime member of the Cooperstown Country Club and the Oneonta Country Club.

Juney is survived by a devoted daughter, Deborah Nevil, of Scotia; two sons, Laurence of Saugerties, and Robert of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.; four granddaughters, Stacy, Roberta, Renee and Krista; two great-granddaughters, Leah and Maya; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one brother, Jack Nevil, and two sisters, Catherine Lippitt and Jane Tennant.

A memorial service will be offered at noon Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown with the Rev. Betsy DelGiacco Jay officiating. After the service, the family will receive friends in the chapel.

Burial, with military funeral honors, will be private in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326, or the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326, or to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth, funeral directors, Cooperstown.

Mary M. Jordan

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mary Margaret Jordan of Richfield Springs died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown after a brief illness.

She was born in Battle Creek, Mich., on March 10, 1911, the daughter of James and Ellen Keogh Jones. She was a graduate of Salamanca High School, D’Youville College, Buffalo, and held a master’s degree in biology from Saint Bonaventure University.

She was a math and science teacher in Eldred, Pa.; Ellicottville; Griffith Institute, Springville, and Marian College, Fond du Lac, Wis.

At the time of her marriage to Myron A. Jordan on Oct. 23, 1947, she was executive secretary of the Otsego County Tuberculosis and Public Health Association in Oneonta.

Mrs. Jordan was active in civic organizations in Richfield Springs, including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA and served two terms as president of the local Garden Club, of which she was a member of more than 40 years. She was a former member and vice president of the Richfield Springs Public Library Board, and a member of the Richfield Springs Historic District Association. She was a member of the Founder’s Society of Syracuse University and its Society of Fellows; and a past member of the Glimmerglass Opera Guild.

She was a communicant of Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, a past president of its Parish Council and a member of the Altar Society.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, James of Richfield Springs, and Peter and Susan of Syracuse.

Her husband, Myron A. Jordan, predeceased her in 1987; as well as a brother and sister.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today in Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terence Healey and the Rev. Robert S. Jones as co-celebrants.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church or the Richfield Springs Rescue Squad are preferred.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Bonnie Frank

COBLESKILL — Bonnie Frank, 60, of Settles Mountain Road, Cobleskill, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

Mrs. Frank was born Feb. 18, 1944, in Cobleskill, the daughter of the late Frederick and Virginia Gill Pickett.

After attending a one-room school house in Howes Cave, she graduated in 1962 from Cobleskill High School and also graduated in 1964 from the SUNY Cobleskill School of Nursery Education.

Mainly a homemaker and mother, Mrs. Frank had been employed by Niagara Mohawk, and retired in 1999 as a receptionist in the Cobleskill office of Bassett Healthcare.

She was a member of Rising Star Chapter, No. 295, O.E.S., Cobleskill, Cobleskill Historical Society, United Methodist Church of Cobleskill, and the Cancer Support Group of Bassett Hospital of Schoharie county. She had been a longtime member of the Wednesday Bowling League, and after retirement was a member of the Tuesday Afternoon league.

Bonnie was married July 27, 1968, to Richard Frank at the United Methodist Church of Cobleskill.

Bonnie is survived by her husband, Richard, of Cobleskill; daughters, Mrs. Michael (Melissa) Roy of Oneonta, and Mrs. Joe (Diana) Hamm, Troy; three grandchildren, Casey K., Hunter P., and Bailey M. Roy, all of Oneonta; a sister, Carolyn (Cookie) Pickett, Cobleskill; and three brothers, Fred Pickett Jr., Cobleskill, George (Joann) Pickett, Chittenango, and Robert Pickett, Loudonville; a niece, Barbara Palmer, Los Angeles, Calif.; nephews, John and Jeff Pickett; and cousins.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church of Cobleskill, with the Rev. Laurel Phillips officiating.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel St., Cobleskill. Interment will be in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Memorials to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 327 W. Main St., Cobleskill, NY 12043 will be appreciated.

Georgia M. Jaquay

UTICA — Mrs. Georgia Mae (Hubbard) Jaquay, 95, passed away Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Utica.

She was born Sept. 11, 1909, in Red House, the daughter of George and Sadie (Constantine) Hubbard.

On Dec. 26, 1932, she married A. Cortez Jaquay in Steamburg. He predeceased her in 1994.

She worked as a teacher at Salamanca Central School in Salamanca. Recently she was residing at the Masonic Care Community in Utica.

Mrs. Jaquay was a member of the Eastern Star chapter in Little Valley, and the Central Bridge United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Sadie Nuttall of Red House; a son, Robert C. Jaquay and his wife, Phyllis, of Orange City, Fla.; a loving grandson, Jordan Jaquay and his wife, Melissa; three great-grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan and Jaelyn Jaquay, all of Cherry Valley.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Jaquay.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. Spring burial will be in the Bramanville Cemetery, Howe Caves.

Contributions in Mrs. Jaquay’s memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Fire Department, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
