Edgar Holtslander

UNADILLA — Edgar Henry Holtslander Sr., 67, of Unadilla passed away unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Aug. 22, 1937, son of the late Arthur and Irene (Roser) Holtslander Sr., in Livingston Manor. Edgar is also predeceased by his brother, Arthur Holtslander Jr.; niece, Judy Woodford; and brother-in-law, Everette Card.

He worked many different jobs in the area, stone quarry, truck driver and machinist, and was an avid hunter and mechanic. Ed loved and collected vehicles and Avon cars.

He is survived by his loving companion, Gloria Brown, and her family, Afton; sisters and brother-in-law, Marie Card, Walton, and Irene and Russell Sprague, Trout Creek; sisters-in-law, Doris Holtslander, Starrucca, Pa., and Myrna and Al Drumm, Sidney Center; daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Charles Pike, Bainbridge, Bambi Holtslander, Whitesboro, Tina Richardson and Frank Raymond, Norwich, Tammi Holtslander and Jim Goulette, Unadilla, and Tonia and Jim Moore, Oneonta; sons and daughters-in-law, Edgar Holtslander Jr. and Christine Burns, Wells Bridge, and William Holtslander and Hazel Hall, Sidney; grandchildren, Noel, Rayne, Autumne and Dakota Pike; Jamie, Brandy and Anthony Brodie; Jesse Jones; Walter and Cheyenne Raymond; Robert, William and Andrew Moore; Dustin Duncan’ Alysha Holtslander and Ethan Hall; Katrina Goulette, Samantha Burns and Jessica Jean Brown; nieces and nephews, Helen and Andrew Plant, Sue Saucier, Gary Card and Tracy Peck, Russell and Peggy Sprague Jr., Joanne and Brian Drumm and Jane and George Bumpass; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral and committal services will follow at noon. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in Walton.

Edward ’Jay’ Day

SUMMIT — Edward J. "Jay" Day, 63, of Summit died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Ellis Memorial Hospital, Schenectady.

He was born in Brooklyn, the son of Edward and Phyllis (Smith) Day.

On June 10, 1978, he married Phyllis A. Ober, who he met while employed at Suburban Bus Company. They enjoyed 26 years of marriage.

He retired from Inter-County Coach in 2001. Jay got his captain’s license in 1975 and went into business as a deep sea commercial charter boat captain.

He enjoyed scuba diving, target shooting, raising and showing his Perchrons and motorcycling.

Jay was a member of the Brimstone Methodist Church, Cobleskill Rotary and Jefferson Masons.

Jay is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Summit; a sister, Karen Radke, of Eastport and Hartwick; a brother, Dennis, of Winter Haven, Fla.; a son, Jay of Ridge; two daughters, Joanne Jansen of Port Orange, Fla., and Jennifer Skolnick of Richmondville; four grandsons, Christopher Jansen, Daniel and Matthew Skolnick and Brian Day; and one great-grandson, Jordan Jansen.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 20, 2004.

Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at the Brimstone Methodist Church on Blenheim Hill Road, (North Blenheim). Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Frank Adams officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at Summit Cemetery in Summit.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brimstone Methodist Church, 600 Blenheim Hill Road, Jefferson, NY 12093.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

David T. Fuller Jr.

ONEONTA — David T. Fuller Jr., 31, most recently of Colorado Springs and of Oneonta, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, unexpectedly in Colorado.

He was born Feb. 25, 1973, in Ft. Lauderdale, the son of David T. Fuller Sr. and Dawn Kelly.

Dave was a self-employed contractor in the Colorado Springs area. While living in Oneonta, he was employed at Iannelli’s Ristorante and Maplecrest Landscaping.

He graduated in 1991 from Oneonta High School and attended St. John Fisher College in Rochester and Hartwick College locally.

Dave enjoyed sports, especially football and fishing.

He is survived by a son, Carson Fuller, and Carson’s mother, Sandra Fitch of Delhi; his father, David T. Fuller Sr. of Ft. Lauderdale; his mother and stepfather, Dawn and David J. Vergari of Oneonta; his brothers and sisters, David Vergari and Alyssa Vergari of Grand Island, Justin Ploutz and Megan Ploutz of Oneonta, and Michael Vergari of Oneonta; his grandparents, Richard and Janice Kelly of Palm Beach Shores, Fla., and Siro and Joan Vergari of Oneonta; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Glenn and Daisy Fuller.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 20, 2004, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Justina M. Ivansik

WORCESTER — Justina (Stena/Christine) Mae Ivansik, 84, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at the Otsego Manor, Cooperstown.

She was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Klein, Mont., the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Strnod) Ivansik.

She graduated from the East Worcester Union School.

She was an employee of Newbury’s Department Store and the Glove Factory, both of Oneonta.

She resided in Binghamton for several years and moved to The Meadows, now the Otsego Manor, 15 years ago.

She was predeceased by a brother, Victor, who died in infancy, and a sister, Angela Payne of Phelps.

She is survived by her sister, Rose Boughton of Meridale; her nephews, Robert Payne of Albany, Fred Boughton of Dupont, Colo., and Roland Boughton of Indianapolis, Ind.; and her nieces, Jean Williams of Kennewick, Wash., Virginia White and Roxanne Hitchcock, both of Meridale.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service and burial will be held at the Lower East Worcester Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Hubert S. Hume

EDMESTON — Hubert Simmons Hume (Herbie), 85, of Edmeston died peacefully at his home Dec. 19, 2004, after a short illness.

He was born in Pittsfield on Aug. 15, 1919, the son of Hugh and Blanche (Keith) Hume.

He married Ann Marie Benson on Nov. 11, 1944, at St. Andrews Church in New Berlin. They had lived in the same home for 60 years.

Herbie was a people person, enjoying his family and being with his many special friends. He attended Edmeston Central School and in his teens he worked on the schools’ addition, which was done in the late 1930s. After high school, he hauled milk to the Edmeston and Fly Creek Creameries and was also a logger.

He had several great loves: country music, driving the school bus for ECS, John Deere tractors and Christmas. Herbie played guitar and was a singer and square dance caller with "Ernie Russ and his Orchestra" and later "The Old Favorites." He continued this at house parties with his many friends until his illness. Herbie was also a lifetime member of the Musician Union in Oneonta.

Mowing lawns in and around Edmeston was a special time for him with his John Deere, and his home at Christmas was an array of lights of which he was proud.

Herbie is survived by his wife, Ann; his children and their spouses, Dennis and E. Mary Hume of Mount Vision, Carol and Skip Scanlon of West Exeter, and Bruce Hume of Edmeston; his grandchildren, Kimberly Baker and Dave, Shawn Berberick and Erica, Robert and Cisco Piersma, Brian Piersma and Teresa, Roger and Ginger Hume, and Michael Hume; great-grandchildren, Keith, Codi, Kevin, Taylor, Amber, Daniel, Zachary, David, Geoff, Kody, Ashley, Bradley, Pashents and Jay; his sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Aage Holk of Frankfort; his sisters-in-law, Gladys Austin, Grace Gustafson, both of Norwich, and Betty Hume of Lyons; his brother-in-law and Ann’s twin, Bruno Benson of New Berlin; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

An infant son, Edward; and three brothers, his twin, Harold, Donald and Roger Hume, predeceased Herbie.

The family would like to thank all of Dad’s friends and family for their calls, best wishes, visits and prayers. Also Catskill Area Hospice, especially Amy C., Amanda, Amy B. and Danielle for their professionalism and caring responses to Herbie’s needs and ours. All of you have touched our lives as well as his.

And Dad, our precious and beautiful memories of you will soothe our hearts. There could never be a more wonderful husband, Dad, Grampa and friend to us all. We are grateful to God giving you to us.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Noll officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Contributions may be made in Herbie’s memory to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Theron Boyd

GARDENDALE, Ala. — Theron Boyd, 69, of Gardendale, Ala., passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, in Alabama.

He was born Jan. 15, 1935, in the town of Unadilla, the son of Lawrence and Luella Crumb Boyd.

Theron lived in Alabama for the past five years and was formerly of Mount Upton and Naugatuck, Conn.

Mr. Boyd was predeceased by his wives, Vera Brundage and Lucy Cooper.

He was a former member of the Mount Upton Fire Department and Emergency Squad. Theron was a past captain of the squad and was an area E.M.T. instructor. He was a member of the Mensa Society.

Surviving include his wife, Joan Grimes of Gardendale, Ala.; nine children, Lyn Piatt, Jerry Boyd, Donna Quiter, Curt Cooper, Pam Sheridan, Suzy Monroe, Mike Boyd, James Boyd and Nicole Boyd; six sisters, Louise, Edith, Phyllis, Laura, Ernestine and Alice; two brothers, Donald and William; former wife, Wilma Thompson; three grandsons, Michael, Thomas and Ale; nine stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder, pastor of the Mount Upton United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Upton at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mount Upton Emergency Squad or the Maplewood Cemetery Association.

John J. Boese

ONEONTA — John J. Boese, 85, of Oneonta passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 7, 1919, in the Bronx, the son of the late Charles and Sophie (Witteborn) Boese.

He married Dorothy Hickey on April 11, 1942, in the Bronx. Mrs. Boese predeceased him Nov. 11, 1987.

John was an engineer for 46 years with Bell Laboratories in New York City and later transferring to Holmdel, N.J., until his retirement in 1981. He enjoyed gadgets and electronics.

John had a special love of animals and was always donating to animal charities.

He was a member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers of America and also a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church of Oneonta and Colts Neck, N.J.

John is survived by his daughter, Nancy Jankura of Oneonta; his two grandchildren, Sofia Jankura of Oneonta and John Cole of Germany; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Captain John J. Boese Jr., in 1972, four sisters and three brothers.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Colts Neck, N.J. Burial will follow in Holmdel Cemetery, Holmdel, N.J.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Colts Neck, N.J.

Memorial contributions may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Otsego County S.P.C.A., 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326, in loving memory of John J. Boese.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Bertha I. Cullipher

ONEONTA — Bertha Ida Cullipher, 80, of Oneonta passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 20, 1924, in Bird City, Kan., the daughter of George and Mamie Theye.

She married Angus Cullipher in 1953, and he died in 1996.

She resided in Oneonta for the past 19 years, moving here from Colby, Kan. While living in Kansas, she was employed by the Ramada Inn.

She is survived by her children, David Bullock of Friendship, Ind., Steven Bullock of Oneonta, Catherine Cullipher of Oneonta, Margie Cullipher of Oneonta, and Janie Cooper of Scott City, Kan.; her grandchildren, Adam Cooper, Joseph Guilfoyle, Crissy Frahm, Jacob Cooper, Steven Cooper, Isaac Cooper, Landon and Makenzie Cullipher, Heather, Daniel, Joshua and Brea Bullock; her brothers and sisters, George Theye of Hutchinson, Kan., Louis Theye of Colby, Kan., Louise Johnson of Arlenes, Neb., Gertrude Zamay of Binghamton, Florence Johnson of Dodge City, Kan., and Viola Pyle of Denver, Colo.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with Lt. Col. Eugene Pigford of The Salvation Army officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until service time Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, 25 River St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Thelma A. Hatch

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Thelma A. Hatch, 87, of Cooperstown died Sunday morning, Dec. 19, 2004, at Otsego Manor.

She was born Dec. 31, 1916, in Fork Shop, a daughter of G. Linn and Grace (Allison) Kane.

She married Frank McKelvey on May 20, 1978, in Fly Creek. Mr. McKelvey died May 5, 1982. She then married Leon F. Hatch on June 18, 1983, in Cooperstown. Mr. Hatch died Sept. 24, 2000.

Raised and educated in the Cooperstown area, Thelma was employed for many years as a housekeeper in several area homes.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Thelma is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Jane Hribar of Fly Creek, Mrs. Ruth Curran of Toddsville and Mrs. Emily Thorn of Hartwick.

She was predeceased by one brother, Vernon Kane, who died Dec. 18, 1981.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 10 to 10:30 Wednesday morning.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Harry B. Judkins

BROCTON — Harry B. Judkins, 93, of Burr Road, Brocton, formerly of Rew, Pa., died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Westfield Memorial Hospital in Westfield after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 12, 1911, in Westford, the son of the late William and Netta (Southworth) Judkins.

A Brocton area resident since 1985, he and his wife moved here from Rew to be with their daughter.

He had been a welder for Dresser Rand Corp. in Bradford, Pa., for many years, retiring in 1973.

He was a charter member of the Rew Volunteer Fire Department in Rew.

He was an avid hunter and was a well-known trapper in the trapping world. He was known for his trapping business where he made and sold traps and trap parts as well a trap lure and trapping supplies. He had been published in several trapping magazines. He had been a member of the Bradford Rifle Club and enjoyed target shooting. He had been very active in the Brocton/Portland Senior Citizens organization.

He served in the Army during World War II, attaining the rank of private.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Adele (Burgess) Judkins; his daughter, Ruth Anne Delcamp of Brocton; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Judkins, and his mother, Netta (Southworth) Judkins, his son, Jim Judkins, his two brothers, Lee Judkins and Ralph Judkins, and by his two sisters, Lula Silvernail and Emma Rifenberg.

Visitation will not be observed. Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorials may be made to Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue, Inc., 7540 N. Gale St., Westfield NY 14787.
