Leon E. Lord

DELHI — Leon E. Lord, 82, of Hamden Hill Road died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Jan. 1, 1922, in Brooklyn, Pa., the son of Alvin E. and Ruth (Grannis) Lord.

He married Helen Every on Dec. 31, 1945, in St. John’s Episcopal Church, Delhi.

A lifelong area resident, Leon served in Panama with the Coast Artillery Army from 1942 to 1945.

An avid beekeeper, Leon loved to garden and woodwork. Many of the things he made were given to his daughters. He also enjoyed fishing and trapping.

Leon was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was the best dad in the world!

He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Delhi, and the American Legion, Donald W. Gleason Post No. 190, Delhi.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Lord of Delhi; four daughters, Linda and David Reeve of Penn Yan, Sue and John Ellis of Delhi, Nancy and Michael Kerns of Apalachin and Marie and Ron Walsh of Cortland; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beulah Howell of Tuckhannock, Pa., and Edna Welch of Montrose, Pa.; a brother-in-law, John Every of Bloomville; a sister-in-law, Nellie Gabriel of Delhi; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at the St. John’s Episcopal Church, Delhi, with the Very Rev. Paul Hartt and the Rev. Nancy Truscott officiating.

Calling hours will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will take place in the spring in Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Leon’s memory be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Delhi, or Bassett Healthcare Dialysis Unit, 1 Associate Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Harold E. Young

WARREN — Mr. Harold Eldred Young, 83, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at his home with his loving family gathered around.

He was born March 22, 1921, in Springfield, the son of Fred and Maud (Willsey) Young.

On April 14, 1942, he married Lois Proper in Ames. She survives.

Harold served in the United States Navy as a Seaman Second Class during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Hunt. By joining the U.S. Navy and serving his country, Harold put his education on hold. He was very proud to become an honorary member of the 2000 graduating class of Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School as they honored the veterans of World War II.

His employment included Glensfoot Farm, Borden’s Dairy and the New York State Department of Transportation.

His memberships included the American Legion, Whiteman-Hull-Snyder Post 1360, Cherry Valley, CSEA Retiree Program, and Springfield Presbyterian Church. He was a retired member of the Cherry Valley Fire Department.

Survivors besides Lois, his wife of 62 years, include a son, Harold (Sonny) E. Young Jr. of Cherry Valley; daughters, Kathryn Y. and her husband, David, Dauchy of Burlington Flats, and Karen Y. and her husband, Ernie, Whiteman of Springfield Center; grandchildren, Melissa Hacker, Britney Young, Sonya Young, Todd Dauchy, Ken Whiteman and Rich Whiteman; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters Helen, Virginia, Marion and Hilda; a brother, Cola; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Eugene, in 1962.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Pastor Susan Burdsall officiating.

Calling hours will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at the funeral home, with an American Legion Service at 8 p.m.

Spring burial, with military honors, will be in the Roseboom Cemetery, Roseboom.

Contributions in Harold’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Springfield First Responders.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Junior F. Wilcox

BROOKFIELD — Junior Floyd Wilcox, 75, of the town of Brookfield passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at home.

He was born June 8, 1929, in the town of Columbus, the son of Floyd and Emma (Winton) Wilcox.

Junior married Bernice Yankowski Wilcox on Sept. 5, 1949. She predeceased him May 18, 1999.

He spent his childhood in the town of Columbus and attended 5 Corners School.

Junior was employed by Kraft Foods of South Edmeston for 25 years and became a livestock farmer after his retirement. He was a member of the Columbus Quarter Church, town of Columbus.

Junior is survived by his children, James and Lynette Wilcox, Brookfield, Dean and Susan Wilcox, Brookfield, Donna and Jack Vunk, Edmeston, and William and Marge Wilcox, Brookfield; grandchildren, Matt, Brad and Chad Wilcox, Kevin and Amanda Neidhart, Scott, Rob and Erick Wilcox, Jeremy and April Vunk, Kari, Joe and Kris Vunk, and Justin, Ryan, Cory and Derick Wilcox; stepgrandchildren, Katie, Megan and Will Ziers; one great-grandson, Jack Vunk; and a brother, Fay Wilcox, Morris.

He was predeceased by Ann Park, Ike Wilcox, Melvin Wilcox, Richard Wilcox and Bonnie Yankowski.

Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Ernest Clemmens officiating.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Brookfield Fire Department, Brookfield, NY 13314.

Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

John R. Stiefel Jr.

NEW LISBON — John R. Stiefel Jr., 44, of North Welcome Road, Mount Vision/New Lisbon, died in a motor vehicle accident in North Carolina on Dec. 28, 2004.

John was born Aug. 26, 1960, in Oneonta.

John was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. His love of Lynyrd Skynyrd was known by all of those that knew him. His laugh, spirit and generous heart was contagious to all that crossed John’s path through his lifetime.

John attended Oneonta City schools and completed his education in Montana.

He is survived by his parents, Geraldine Yoder and John Stiefel Sr.; two daughters that were cherished, Amber and Jackie; his sisters, Jolene Stiefel, Joi Alfano and her husband, Joseph, Julie Baker, Jeanene Thayer, Cristy Knowles and Jennifer Gardner; one brother, Jimmy Stiefel; a very special friend and companion, Fran Sala; numerous nieces and nephews; a stepfather, Bill Yoder; too many friends to mention; and John’s faithful companion Rottweiler, Samson.

Mr. Stiefel was cremated, and a memorial service for friends and family will be announced at a later date.

Barbara W. Henderson

ONEONTA — Barbara W. Henderson of Southside Drive, Oneonta, died at her home Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, with her family by her side.

Barbara was born July 12, 1933, in Teaneck, N.J., the daughter of John S. and Helen E. (Adair) Weeks.

She graduated from Dumont High School, Dumont, N.J., in 1952, and was employed at Home Life Insurance Company in New York for a few years.

Barbara married Robert L. Henderson Jr. on March 24, 1956, in Harrington Park, N.J.

She also worked at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital as a switchboard operator for several years. Barbara was a 49-year member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was an ordained elder.

She was a member of the Martha Chapter Number 116 Order of the Eastern Star, having joined in 1962. She served as matron in 1977 and DDGM of Otsego-Schoharie District in 1983. Barbara was a member of the DAR Oneonta Chapter and Oneonta Garden Club. She also sang with the Sweet Adelines for several years.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Robert L. Henderson of Oneonta; three children, James S. and his wife, Pamela E., Henderson of Vernon, Deborah E. and her husband, Timothy, Raymond of Sacramento, Calif., and Robin H. and her husband, the Rev. Raymond S., Thomas of Tucson, Ariz.; two beloved grandchildren, Britney S. and Andrew R. Thomas of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Helen and her husband, Stan, DeVoe of Florida, and Virginia and her husband, Dallas, Wassink of Oregon; a brother-in-law, Hugh, and his wife, Betty, Henderson of Oneonta; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Steven Weeks.

Calling hours were held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta. There was an Order of the Eastern Star Service at 5:45 p.m.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Patricia Raube-Wilson officiating.

Burial at the Glenwood Cemetery will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Hanne Jacobsen

STAMFORD — Hanne Jacobsen, 95, passed away peacefully at Robinson Terrace in Stamford on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004.

Born in Madall, Norway, on Oct. 14, 1909, she was one of seven children of Bernhard and Edvarda (Kristensen) Gundersen.

She moved to Chicago, Ill., and married Max Birnbaum in 1930. He predeceased her Aug. 23, 1935. She married Christoffer Jacobsen on Jan. 20, 1940, and they settled in Lynbrook. Christoffer died June 4, 1981.

She was predeceased by her son, Donald Birnbaum, on Sept. 20, 1986; her daughter-in-law, Grace Birnbaum, on Jan. 23, 2002; her sisters, Gudren, Edith, Ragnild and Agga; and her brothers, Edvard and Gunner.

She was a past member of the Lynbrook Chapter of Eastern Star and a member of Prattsville Dutch Reformed Church.

She loved gardening, knitting, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Joanne Renz and her husband, Michael, of Gilboa; and grandsons, Stephen Birnbaum and his wife, Lisa, of New Orleans, La., and Michael Birnbaum and his wife, Thu, of Wildomar, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Lindsay Renz of Rotterdam, Meghan Renz and Jordan Renz of Gilboa, Darby and Donald Birnbaum of New Orleans, La., and Joshua and Heather Birnbaum of Wildomar, Calif.; one great-great-grandson, Malachy G. Renz of Gilboa; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, in the Prattsville Dutch Reformed Church, Main Street, Prattsville, with the Rev. Diana Smith officiating.

Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Norman A. Mollen

SOUTH VALLEY — Mr. Norman A. Mollen, 63, passed away at his residence Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, with his loving family near by after a courageous yearlong battle with lung cancer.

He was born July 20, 1941, in New York, the son of Kristian N. and Debby Jane (Griffey) Mollen.

On Sept. 26, 1959, he married Marilyn J. Elliott at the First Christian Church, South Valley; she survives.

He lived in the Cherry Valley area for 45 years and commuted to New York City from 1979-1999. He was employed as a medical research scientist at NYC Blood Center in New York until retiring in 1999. Starting in January 2003, he worked part-time in the research labs at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

Besides his wife of 45 years, Marilyn J. Mollen, survivors include four children, Pamela J. Hamlin and her husband, Douglas M. Hamlin, of Delmar, Diane L. Mollen and Brian A. Gibbs of South Valley, Kristine R. Williamson and her husband, Stephen C. Williamson II, of Moneta, Va., and James P. Mollen of New York City; a sister, Helen Lofgren, and brother-in-law, Peter Lofgren, of Schuylerville; he was beloved "Poppy" to four grandchildren, Nicole and her husband, Jeffrey Owens, of Roanoke, Va., Jessica Mollen of South Valley, Lindsay Williamson of Roanoke, Va., and Stephen C. Williamson III of Moneta, Va.; one great-granddaughter, Makayla N. Owens of Roanoke, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and colleagues.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Cherry Valley.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church, Alden Street, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Terry Brant and the Rev. Ron Fralick, officiating.

Spring burial will be in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Mollen’s memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, care of Kelly Love, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or Research Institute at Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Clark George Lay

BOVINA CENTER — Clark George Lay, 85, of Bovina Center died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, while listening to his daughter Marlene sing "In the Garden."

He was born Jan. 15, 1919, in Vermont, the son of Charles and Maude (Miller) Lay.

He married Gladys Reinertsen on Nov. 29, 1946, in Bovina. A veteran who served during World War II, Clark spent most of his life in the Bovina area.

He was employed by the town of Bovina as its Highway Superintendent for many years until his retirement. He later went on to work for the Delhi Telephone Company, where he stayed for 10 years.

Clark was a member of the Bovina United Presbyterian Church, the Antique Motorcycle Club of America, the American Legion, Donald W. Gleason Post No. 190 in Delhi, and was a past member of the Delhi Grange.

He will be remembered for, and took great pride in, his woodworking hobby. He loved to make wooden toys.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Lay of Bovina Center; four daughters, Tanya and Larry Jones of Framingham, Mass., Marcia and Bill Bagley of Meridale, Marlene and Rick Cammer of Harpersfield, and Denise and John VanDusen of DeLancey; grandchildren, Brian Jones, Gretchen Cole, John Bagley and friend, Kim Wells, Bill Bagley and fiancee, Paula Christman, Josh and Ben VanDusen, Jason Cammer and friend, Shahna Cohen; and great-grandson, Nicholas Clark Cammer; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance. Friends are invited to pay their respects beginning at noon.

Burial will take place in the spring at Bovina Cemetery, Bovina Center.

Contributions in Clark’s memory are asked to be made to the Bovina Emergency Squad, Bovina Center, NY 13740, or Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Main Street, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.
