Mary L. Adams

STAMFORD — Mary L. Adams, 93, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Nov. 28, 1911, in Walton, the daughter of Thomas and Rosario (Palazzo) Latronica.

She married J. Robert Adams in Hobart on June 14, 1936.

Mary graduated from Walton Central School in the Class of 1929. She was a legal secretary for more than 30 years, including at Peake’s Law Office, Walton; Hon. A. Lyndsay O’Connor, Hobart; and Govern, McDowell and Becker, Stamford.

A resident of the Hobart-Stamford area for more than 60 years, she also resided for 10 years at Nader Towers, Oneonta.

She was a member for many years of the Township United Methodist Church, as well as Township United Methodist Women. Mary was also a member of the Golden Age Club while in Oneonta.

Her children, John and Betty Adams of South Kortright, Rose Linda and Darrel Randall of Albuquerque, N.M., and James and Rose Adams of Stamford; as well as grandchildren, Beth Adams, Scott Adams, Evangaline Randall, and Julia and Lyndsey Adams; and great-grandchildren, Laura Adams-Durgin, Rachel Adams and Krista Northrop, survive. She is also survived by a sister, Josephine Marlette of Walton; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Robert; also her sisters, Racheal Fiumera of Walton and Jennie Brewary of Rome; and her brothers, Anthony Latronica of Walton and Patrick Latronica of Johnson City, predeceased her.

There will be no calling hours. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of contributions may be to your charity of choice or the Township United Methodist Church, Hobart, NY.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Maurice S. Nichols

ONEONTA — Maurice S. "Nick" Nichols Sr., 94, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 8, 1910, in Oneonta, the son of Martin S. and Mae (Johnson) Nichols.

He married Loretta Kelly on Dec. 16, 1931, and she passed away July 21, 1994.

For a period of 47 years, retiring in 1974, Nick worked as a clerk for the D&HRR.

He served in the Army National Guard during World War II.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and a former member of the Holy Name Society, where he participated in the old-time minstrel shows. He also was a member of the Oneonta Eagles, the Brotherhood of Railroad Clerks and BPOE 1312.

Nick was an avid bowler, golfer, horseshoe player, woodworker and vegetable gardener, and enjoyed making beaded ornaments. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

He will be very deeply missed by all who loved and knew him. He was always there to help and support his family.

He is survived by a daughter, Pat Van Hoesen (Richard) of Jefferson; his grandchildren, Peggy Hait (Russell) of Jefferson, Lorraine Van Hoesen (Steve Ogborn) of Buena Vista, Va., James Van Hoesen of Jefferson, David Van Hoesen of Harpersfield, Millie Van Hoesen of Stamford, Marie Epperson (Brandon) of Phoenix, Ariz., Michael and Matthew Nichols of Atlanta, Ga., and Lisa Tormay (Fred) of Phoenix, Ariz.; his great-grandchildren, Melissa Thompson (Dan) of Jefferson, Sara Hait of Jefferson, Brian Hait of Syracuse, Jesse, Nichole and Katy Van Hoesen of Stamford, Amanda, Chrystalina and Brandi Epperson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jake Nichols and Nicholas Tormay of Phoenix; and his two great-great-grandsons, Peter and Paul Thompson of Jefferson.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Ann Nichols, in 1999, a son, Maurice Nichols Jr., in 2000, a sister, Ethel, and a brother, Leland, as well as two nieces.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, in St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Eva E. Oakes

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mrs. Eva E. Oakes, 89, passed away Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at the Masonic Care Community, Utica.

She was born Dec. 19, 1915, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Michael and Cora (Carrow) Lincourt.

She was married to Carl Oakes. He predeceased her.

She attended St. Francis DeSales Catholic School in Herkimer. She was a dedicated housewife and mother to nine children.

Survivors include her children, Clifford S. Oakes and his wife, Theresa, of Richfield Springs, Elaine Yerdon and her husband, Seth, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Carlton M. Oakes of Richfield Springs, Charlotte Millard and her husband, Bill, of South Carolina, Jean Domion of Richfield Springs, her twin, Joan Victor of South Carolina, Jerome Oakes and his wife, Regina, of Springfield Center, and Rosalie Snyder of Richfield Springs; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Harold of Arizona.

She was predeceased by a son, Larry; two sisters and three brothers.

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble and walking.

Thank you for the heartfelt care given at the Masonic Care Community in Utica by all.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Mrs. Oakes memory may be made to the Springfield First Responders.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Jerry Jaqueway

SCHOHARIE — Jerry Jaqueway Sr., 92, of Schoharie passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 2, 2005, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill.

He was born April 4, 1912, in Schoharie, the son of Jeremiah and Lydia Bunt Parslow Jaqueway.

He married the former Dorothy Crewell on Sept. 17, 1932. She passed away in 1996.

Jerry was a lifelong resident of Schoharie. He had worked for the former Penn Dixie Cement Company in Howes Cave until he retired in 1975. He was a member of the Schoharie Reformed Church for the past 60 years.

Jerry is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Edith Jaqueway and Jerry and Roberta Jaqueway, all of Schoharie; four grandchildren and their spouses, Cynthia and James Magee of Otego, Michael and Marion Jaqueway of Schoharie, Mark and Kathy Jaqueway of Schoharie, and Deborah Jaqueway Beggs and Greg Beggs of Guilderland; and four great-grandchildren, Kevin Magee, Thomas and Katelyn Jaqueway, Jessica Jaqueway and Gwendolyn Beggs. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at the Schoharie Reformed Church, Main Street, Schoharie, with the Rev. Mike and the Rev. Sherri Meyer-Veen, pastors of the Schoharie Reformed Church, and the Rev. Jared Van Wagenen IV, retired pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Schoharie Reformed Church, Main Street, Schoharie, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, when the family will be present.

Burial will be in the Old Stone Fort, Schoharie, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be given to the Scho-Wright Ambulance, Main Street, Schoharie, NY 12157 or the Schoharie Reformed Church, Main Street, Schoharie, NY 12157, in memory of Jerry Jaqueway Sr.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc. of Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Anne J. Terwilliger

SIDNEY — Anne J. Terwilliger of Sidney, formerly of Montgomery, a homemaker, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in Sidney. She was 88.

The daughter of the late Frank and Florence Norris Gregory, she was born March 23, 1916, in Ferndale.

She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, Montgomery, and a current member of the United Methodist Church of Sidney. Anne was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 560 in Walden.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence L. Terwilliger.

Mrs. Terwilliger is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Ray Sechrist, Ft. Mill, S.C., Pamela and Richard Schuler, Westport, and Karen Burlingame, Seneca Falls; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Marilyn Terwilliger, Brier, Wash.; two sisters, Joan Hardie, Cinnaminson, N.J., and Dorothy O’Brien, LeRoy; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, when the family will be in attendance at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sidney, officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, in Wallkill Valley Cemetery, Route 52, Walden, with the Rev. Paul Milz officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Evelyn Winsmore

DAVENPORT — Evelyn E. Winsmore, 86, of Davenport passed away Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born June 30, 1918, in Livingston Manor, the daughter of Andrew and Anna (Engel) Wagner.

She married John Everett Winsmore on Sept. 16, 1961, and he passed away April 10, 1985.

For a period of 17 years, retiring in 1980, she worked in the cafeteria at the Delaware Academy in Delhi. Before that, she worked for 11 years at the Oneonta Dress Factory.

Evelyn was a member of the Aldrich Baptist Church in North Franklin.

She is survived by a sister, Pearl Wagner of Oneonta, and a nephew, Larry Barnes of Davenport.

She was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Barnes.

A service to celebrate the life of Evelyn will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with Mr. Richard Sliter, pastor of the Aldrich Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Aldrich Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Norris L. Hobbie

UNADILLA — Norris L. Hobbie, 89, of Sand Hill Road, Unadilla, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

He was born Nov. 23, 1915, in Bovina, the son of the late Frank and Bertha Shaver Hobbie.

On March 15, 1944, he married Betty A. Almy in St. Charles, Mo.

Norris worked for many years for the Amphenol Corporation. After retirement, Betty and Norris purchased the Hamden Inn, Hamden. They sold the inn in 1980.

Norris was an active member and a past governor of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277, Sidney. He received his Pilgrim Degree from the Moose several years ago.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Bernice and Lewis Talbot of Mesquite, Texas, and Barbara and Gary Lord of Unadilla; son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Jackie Hobbie of Unadilla; and nine grandchildren, Tammy and Mike Butts, Jeff Harrington and his fiancee, Dee, Terry Becker, Nicole and Brian Redmond, Michelle Yager, Shayne and Toni Becker, Jenniffer Hobbie, Holly Hobbie and Bud Lord. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Beverly Carpenter, and a brother, Ralph Hobbie, predeceased Norris.

The Loyal Order of the Moose will conduct services at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will follow the Moose service. Friends are invited to call at their convenience Friday at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the New York State Veterans Home Patient Care Fund, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830-4305.

Helen K. Rous

OTEGO — Helen K. Rous, 87, of Otego died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at the home of her daughter, Betty Mead, in Sanford, Fla.

She was born Feb. 9, 1917, in Hawaii, the daughter of the late Katsunoshin and Sen (Ishizaki) Yano.

She married Merl J. Rous on Oct. 28, 1945, in Hilo, Hawaii. Mrs. Rous was a homemaker and a member of the Otego Eastern Star.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jean and Harry Mead Sr. of Sanford, Fla.; five grandchildren, Raymond, Daniel, David, Lisa Clark and Harry Jr.; two sisters, Misao Y. Fujiwara and Yasuko Y. Fujioka; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, Merl, and her brother, Edward K. Yano.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Burial will be in the spring at the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ruth H. Glazer

ONEONTA — Ruth Hathaway Glazer, 84, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

The memorial service information will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

William Morton

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — William "Bill" Rogers Morton, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away unexpectedly at his home Dec. 24, 2004. He was 72.

Originally from West Pittston, Pa., Bill and his wife, Naomi, lived in Jacksonville and Naples, Fla., for the past 20 years after having moved from their home in Sidney. They had been married 49 years. Their 50th wedding anniversary would have been in March.

After graduating from W. Pittston High School and the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Bill worked for 34 years at Bendix/Allied Signal/Unison in Sidney and Jacksonville and then for Haynes Corporation in Naples for nine years until his retirement.

Still a kid at heart, Bill loved old toys, collecting postcards, doing crossword puzzles and singing in various church choirs. He played saxophone in the Old Time Band of Bainbridge, and was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Sidney United Methodist Church and the Jewish Community Alliance in Jacksonville, where he exercised regularly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Byron Morton and Helen Fear Morton; and his brother, Donald Byron Morton.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Ruth Players Morton; his sons and their wives and children, Bill, Betsy, Somer and Marissa Morton of Sidney, Roger and Kelly Morton of Jacksonville, and Philip, Debra, Hailey and Emily Morton of Ellington, Conn.; his sister, Dorothy Morton Bossert of Philadelphia, Pa.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bill will be remembered for the love of his family, his light-hearted, good nature and his willingness to help others. He will be sorely missed.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Sidney United Methodist Church.
