Joyce Thorsland

OTEGO — Joyce Elizabeth Thorsland, 86, of Otego died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005.

She was born in Blenheim on March 20, 1918, the daughter of Martin and Esther (Shafer) Parslow. She attended Hartwick College.

She married Casper Thorsland in 1936. Mr. Thorsland died in 1984.

Joyce was a presser at the Oneonta Dress Factory for 25 years. She loved to cook and bake for her family. She adored cats, especially Siamese, and was always kind to the strays that showed up on her doorstep.

Joyce was cherished and loved by her family and friends. Her warmth and generosity, her wonderful sense of humor and her courage and strength inspired everyone who knew her.

Joyce is survived by a daughter, Sonja Davie, and her husband, Raymon, of Cooperstown; three sons, Eric Thorsland and his wife, Jessie, of Maryland, Jon Thorsland and his wife, Joyce, of Otego, and Michael Thorsland and his wife, Barbara, of West Oneonta; a daughter-in-law, Judith Thorsland, of Saratoga Springs; three sisters, Marjorie Pattee, of Clifton Park, Arleen Haig, of Ballston Lake, and Kay Foley, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren, Lori (John), Stephen (Sharon), Brett (Mendy), Derek, Stephanie, Colin, Christine (Joe), Martin, Mica (Debbie), Rodney, Gerri (Brian), and Chad; as well as 17 great-grandchildren.

SHe was predeceased by a son, Martin Thorsland in 1998, and a bother, Kent Parslow..

Funeral and committal services for Joyce E. Thorsland will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Spring burial will take place in the Westville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 507 Kent St., Utica, NY 13501 in memory of Joyce E. Thorsland.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Stanley D. Decker

AFTON — Stanley D. Decker, 59, of Afton passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, surrounded by his family.

He was born Jan. 5, 1945, son of Clifford and Margaret Hulse Decker in Deposit.

Stan served his country in the United States Army from 1962-1965. Stan was a talented welder and had worked for 88 BC Lumber Company, as well as RMJ Enterprises in Afton.

He is survived by three sons, Robert Decker, Texas, Matthew Decker, Afton, and Mitchell Decker, Afton; one daughter, Tina Decker, and her daughter, Brianna Rodriguez, of Texas; mother and stepfather, Margaret and Wilbur Mallory, Hamden; four sisters, Theresa Shedd, Delhi, Brenda Pardee, Bloomville, June Carey, Stamford, and Jacqueline Pardee, Delhi; three brothers, Allan Decker, Deposit, Golden Decker, DeLancey, and Lowell Decker, Nevada; stepchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Clifford; and brother, Lyle Decker.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ollie Kubik officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Education Fund for his two sons, Matt D. and Mitchell S. Decker, at the NBT branch in Afton or Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.

Laura Mae Poulson

COBLESKILL — Mrs. Laura Mae Poulson, 85, of the Eden Park Nursing Home, Cobleskill, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare Schoharie County after a brief illness.

She was born May 18, 1919, in the town of Burlington, the daughter of Harold and Alice (Jenkins) Pierce.

On Dec. 19, 1956, she married Judson Poulson in Erie, Pa. He predeceased her in 1977.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Charles Roberts of Schuyler Lake, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Alice; brothers, Eugene Pierce, Harold Pierce and Charles Pierce; and sisters, Mildred Bowen, Betty Roberts, Virginia Fassett and twin sister, Lillian Cornell.

Cremation will take place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley, and a private memorial service will be held in the spring.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Fletcher L. Murray

BAINBRIDGE — Fletcher L. Murray of Bainbridge died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, after a long illness.

He was retired from Norwich Ero after numerous years.

He married Deanna Bulgarian in Hillicotte, Ohio, on May 25, 1996.

He enjoyed woodworking and made numerous furniture pieces for family and friends. He was also a United States Navy veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna, of Bainbridge; his children, Eric and Mary Lee Murray of Richford, Ohio, Steven and Melissa Murray of Columbus, Ohio, Linda and Angel Cruz of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Ann and Arlin Bradford of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; stepchildren, David and Ernie Knoll of Guilford, George Rogers of Otego, and Patricia Rogers of Tuscon, Ariz.; and numerous grandchildren.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who cared for Fletcher during his illness. Especially Dr. Paceco, Dr. Kloss, Dr. Fallon, Dr. Alvi, Dr. Salmi and all the nurses and nurses’ aides at Lourdes Hospital, Lourdes Cancer Center: Pat, Dawn, B.J., Kathleen, Tammy, Keith, Jahan, Joe and Susan, and Mary from the Palliative Care Nurse.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 58 West Main St., Bainbridge. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. at the Dorothy Memorial Home, with the Rev. Richard Gould officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge in the spring.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Chenango Hospice or to the Chenango County Cancer Society.

Margaret Church

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Margaret Mary Campbell Church of Hyde Park, a longtime waitress at the Doubleday Restaurant in Cooperstown, died Wednesday night, Jan. 5, 2005, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. She was 85.

Margaret was born in Cooperstown on Aug. 15, 1919, a daughter of Grant and Margaret (Hardy) Campbell.

She married Harold A. Church on Nov. 1, 1965, in Elkton, Md. Hal died April 26, 1996.

Raised and educated in Cooperstown, she felt her largest accomplishment in life was giving birth to and raising three children, of whom she was very proud.

A waitress for many years, Margaret once wrote, "If I am to be remembered for anything, perhaps it was pouring coffee in the good old Doubleday Restaurant!"

Of the Episcopal faith, she was a member of Christ Church in Cooperstown.

Margaret will be remembered and missed by her family. In Margaret’s own words: "Thank you all for sticking by me since Hal left, and you know who you are without a doubt!"

Margaret is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Joan and Bill Shevalier of Palm Bay, Fla., and Jean and Roger Butler of Gunnison, Colo.; one daughter-in-law, Joanne Tarbox of Virginia Beach, Va.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five nieces and three nephews; six great-nieces and four great-nephews; five great-great-nephews; and two stepsons and their wives, John and Debbie Church of Owosso, Mich., and Mike and Nancy Church of Gilbert, Ariz.

In addition to her beloved husband and friend, Hal, she was predeceased by one son, Aviation Storekeeper Chief Senior (AKCS) John C. "Jack" Tarbox, USN, who died Aug. 7, 1989; six brothers, Ambrose W. Campbell, Harry Grant Campbell Sr., George Campbell, Charles A. "Buster" Campbell, Richmond Campbell and Robert Campbell; and two sisters, Mabel Baldwin and Lillian Davidson.

Per Margaret’s wishes, a graveside service will be conducted later this spring "in Lilac time" in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Margaret’s family wishes to thank everyone in the special care unit at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown for the compassionate care they provided for Margaret in her final days.

For those who desire, expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial gifts to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Jean Schlafer Penn

DELHI — Jean Schlafer Penn was born Oct. 19, 1927, in Delhi, and died Jan. 6, 2005, in Memphis, Tenn.

She graduated from Delaware Academy as valedictorian of her class and from Cornell University School of Home Economics.

She married and moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., where she worked briefly as assistant dietitian at Kaufmann’s Department Store. She raised a family of five children, divorced, and became chief clerk of Surrogate’s Court of Delaware County, from which she retired in 1987.

Jean was a member of the United Ministry of Delhi and a member of Delta Gamma sorority for more than 50 years.

She had a flair for decorating, flower arranging, sewing and crafts. She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, cats and birds.

She leaves five children, Susan Penn of Memphis, Tenn., Barbara Penn of Tucson, Ariz., Nancy Pedersen of Jacksonville, N.C., Kathy Harding of Wilmington, Del., and John N. Penn IV of Orlando, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, Jonah, Andrea, Jesse, Jennifer, Matthew, Liana and J.T.

Calling hours will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Funeral services will be at the United Ministry of Delhi Church at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Carmen V. Renz

ONEONTA — Carmen V. "Connie" Renz, 79, of Oneonta passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the Valleyview Manor in Norwich.

She was born in the Bronx on Oct. 6, 1925, the daughter of Ottorino and Bernice (Mills) Villa.

She married Stanley Renz on June 12, 1948, and he passed away Jan. 13, 1984.

While living in Oneonta, Connie and her husband were one of the partners in RLR Seafood.

An area resident since 1972, moving here from the Bronx, she was a member of St. James’ Church.

She is survived by her children, Barbara (Bruce) Goodas of Oneonta, Patricia (Arthur) Kessler of Brooklyn, and Janice (Steven) Zaytoun of Flemington, N.J.; her grandchildren, Bruce and Bryan Goodas, Kimberly Kessler and Aurora Zaytoun; and a sister, Doris Renz, formerly of Oneonta.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

MaryAnn Schneider

ONEONTA — MaryAnn Schneider, 54, of Oneonta passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 10, 1950, in Oneonta, the daughter of Carl and Sadie (Accurso) Hunt.

She married Gary L. Schneider on Oct. 11, 1975. For the past 12 years, MaryAnn had been employed by FoxCare and before that worked as a library assistant at the Oneonta Junior High School and Wilber Bank as a teller.

A lifelong area resident, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta and a former member of the Oneonta American Legion Auxiliary Unit 259.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, arts and crafts, sewing, traveling and shopping with her two daughters. MaryAnn was an affectionate person and loved children.

She is survived by her husband, Gary L. Schneider of Oneonta; her two daughters, Heather M. Schneider (Casey Knapp) of Oneonta, and Stacey M. Schneider (Brad Vanderlip) of Unadilla; her brother, David Hunt of Dearborn, Mich.; and two nephews and a niece, Timothy Olmstead, Tina Spisak and Corey Hunt.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Karen Olmstead.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle officiating.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at the funeral home. The family will be in attendance.

Spring burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Contributions may be directed to the American Red Cross, for the Tsunami Relief Fund, in memory of MaryAnn Schneider, 439 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Glenn A. Couse

MILFORD — Glenn A. Couse 76, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2005, at his home on Route 28 in Milford Center.

He was born Nov. 1, 1928, in Milford, the son of Harry and Lillian (Mower) Couse.

Glenn attended Milford Central School and was a lifelong resident of the Milford area. For a number of years he worked on area farms. Later, he was self-employed as a stone mason. He also worked in the construction industry.

He married Nadine (Richards) on July 24, 1954. Together they were the devoted parents of their five children. While Glenn loved to frequent garage sales and fish and hunt, his favorite activities were simply visiting and talking with others. He loved to meet and talk with everyone, whether they were a longtime friend or new acquaintance. He was a devoted and loving family man and cherished having his family around him.

He is survived by his daughter, Gwen White, and her husband, Dennis, of Laurens; four sons, Donald Couse of Milford Center, David Couse and his wife, Mary, of Unadilla, Dennis Couse of Oneonta, Dale Couse and Ruth of Milford; three grandchildren, David and Phil Couse of Richmond, Va., Shawn Callahan of Oneonta; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nadine, in 2001; his three brothers, Earl, Clark and Ralph Couse, all of the Milford area; and his two sisters, Ruth Haynes of Oneonta and Edna Seeley of the Milford area.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home on Pioneer Street in Cooperstown.

Funeral services for Glenn will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Rob Kazinski, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church, officiating.

Spring burial will be in the Milford Center Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those who so desire, make memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in Glenn’s memory.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
