Helen L. Delaney

COOPERSTOWN — Our mom, Helen Louise Delaney, 91, went to sleep Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at The Manor in Cooperstown. In the near future, her God, Jehovah, will resurrect her to a paradise earth, and she will experience the fulfillment of His promise at Revelation 21:4: "And He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

Helen was born in Hobart, the daughter of Charles and Sarah Fullington, on Aug. 19, 1913.

She was predeceased by her husband, Francis J. Delaney, on Feb. 18, 1981. Francis married this beautiful woman May 11, 1929, and together they brought five children into the world: Letha, Francis Jr. (Bud), Bonnie, James and Patrick.

In time, her children married caring, supportive persons who demonstrated love for mom throughout her many years of life. These include Letha’s husband, Harry Post; Bonnie’s husband, Richard Morenus; and, especially, Patrick’s wife, Barbara.

From the beginning, Barbara has been a deeply compassionate, loyal, loving daughter-in-law and friend to mom. At the very end, she was a tremendous source of comfort to both mom and the rest of us. Dear Barbara, thank you. There were others, too, that touched her life at different times and were very dear to her.

Helen cared deeply for her family. Over the years she demonstrated that tender affection in ways too numerous to count.

Helen experienced the pleasure of having had 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Each of them treasure memories of an exuberant, doting grandmother who did what she could to spoil them.

During her youth, she was an outstanding defensive player on the Hogan’s girls basketball team that her husband coached. Mom lived her entire life in the Oneonta area and thoroughly enjoyed, as she put it, "strawberrying" and "blueberrying" in its hills. She would spend hours picking buckets full of berries and then give them all away.

Mom loved animals of all kinds; especially dogs and cats — there was always a pet in the house. She was clever with her hands in making quilts, crocheting, knitting and many other artful crafts. She was a great cook, and really loved music with a beat — to watch mom and dad dance was a real treat.

Helen became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses later in life and was an active, faithful servant for many years. When, in time, she was unable to be as active as she once was, she found comfort in His words at Hebrews 6:10: "God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love you showed for His name ..."

Family and dear friends will attest to her very generous, caring, warm and fun-loving nature. We will miss her wonderful laugh till we hear it once again.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at The Manor in Cooperstown. Your many acts of kindness and thoughtfulness were appreciated by Helen and family alike and will not be forgotten.

A memorial service offering comfort and hope for those she left behind will be conducted by Donald Gunther at the Oneonta Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3985 Route 23, West Oneonta, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donations made in Helen’s memory to: the Alzheimer’s Association, 243 Chestnut St.. Oneonta, NY 13820 or Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.
